Works great did this to a project 06 250 I got kid broke the rod trying to change the piston and didn't kno there are cir clips in the wrist pin of piston and broke the rod. Well he also had a es bottom end that was good but he said it wouldn't work watched this video I collided the 2 motors together and it runs great shifts great absolutely great description on how to love it!
Great help. I have followed your help. However, when I put my 06 350 es back together the display shows me as being in 1st gear. No neutral light on dash yet. Is there a way to reset it to neutral. I've been through the gears on my "new" footshifter and everything feels fine except the neutral light won't light up. Any tips? Thanks.
Hey glad you found it useful, near the end of the video I mention that the bike I was working on was modified previously to start in gear. You’ll need to do this to yours as well. I don’t have a how to on it or anything but there is some online, I believe someone on the HondaATVForums website recently posted a how to. They way this one was done it showed neutral all the time, which is an unfortunate trade off. You could probably wire it into the brake light switch or something so it just works when you pull the brake lever. I never pursued it any further as the owner of the ATV was more than happy with it as it was. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.
Thanks. I'll check out HondaATVForums. Your video was enough to get my inspiration going. I got it apart and back together shifting manually.I've got a mechanic buddy who has worked on Honda quads in the seismic industry for about thirty years. If I can't get it ; he should be able to help. (He's in Mexico on holidays or I would have called him already). All the best.
That would be pretty complicated, the automatic transmissions are a lot different than the ES and footshift models. I suppose if you had a way to electronically control the throttle and reduce rpm between shifts, then you could build a very basic auto shifter to work off the ES system. It would basically just be able to shift up/down at set rpm. Anything more advanced than that would get real complex real fast for us DIY types.
I'm buying my first 4 wheeler tomorrow. It's an 05 350es. Only 1600 miles on it. The more I read about this quad, the happier I am with my decision. I feel like a kid on Christmas eve right now. Lol
Could you have just welded a gear shift lever to the hex shift shaft instead of removing the engine? If it ended up breaking later, then you could go deeper and do what you are currently doing.
how did you mod it to start in gear ? i ask because mine wont start with the button , and has shift issues , and NEUTRAL INDICATOR LIGHT STAYS LIT . these two occured at the same time.thanks .
Joe Hodgen if neutral light is on it should start. Does light go out with you push the start button? What exactly happens when you push then button, any clicking or anything?
Joe Hodgen if solenoid is clicking it should start, typically if they click it should be sending power to the starter. If it’s clicking and it’s not sending power to the starter that would make me think the solenoid itself might be faulty. My own 350’s the N light is on constant and it just starts in any gear.
Hey Buddy. Have u ever put one of these atv's in gear and it feels like the brakes are still on somewhere? My buddy blew an oil pump, replaced it, put it all back together and now he says it feels like the brakes are on all the time. Any ideas b4 I tear it down?
Hmmm I’m not sure what would cause that internally unless some of the bearings got tight when the pump went out. Let me know what you find out I’m definitely interested to hear what’s going on with it.
Great write up. Got a 99' 450 es over the weekend for cheap. The main computer for the ES is shot from what my trouble shooting indicates. The conversion is 1/4 of the price of the computer. Id rather do it right like you did versus the octagon cheap shifter mod.
+Ajaxaxxess I'd be a little more leery converting the 450's as the transmission gears in the ES models were made lighter than in the footshift models. Converting to footshift may cause issues long term. Just something to consider.
Ive been researching this on some other forums along with different videos. I think its worth a shot as long as i dont do any neutral drops etc it should be fine. If she pops a gear i'll let you know. Appreciate the heads up.
The inside of the shifter shaft looks identical, so prior to the conversion, that shaft must have just rotated whenever you changed gears with the ES buttons???. Couldn't you have left the ES gears in tact and just put the new foot shift shaft in? Just curious why it wouldn't work using both? I've always wondered why Honda wouldn't have designed it that way to start with. I prefer shifting with my foot, but when I got into deep water without rubber boots on, I always wished I had an ES or A/T - lol. That's one of the reasons I switched from my Foreman to the Rubi.
You could but it's a bit hard on those tiny change gears shifting manually. The idea being the shaft is there for "emergencies" only. Eventually they would break and get bound up, probably in the middle of nowhere where you'd have to drive 20 miles back to your truck in reverse or something like that hahaha.
Question Killer, my bolt that holds the shifter shaft in loosened up and the shaft came half way out. Can i push it back in and tighten the bolt or do i need to take the pullstart and cover off. Is there any washers that would have fallen off? it goes most of the way but i can't get it the last little bit for the bolt to hold it. Thanks for any info!
So inside the engine the bolt that holds the shaft from coming out fell out, and now you can pull the shaft right out of the side of the engine? There is no way to tighten the internal bolt without pulling the rear cover off, and you’d probably want to find the bolt anyway, no washer on it.
@@KillerATV I wish i could post a pic, but i think the bolt is on the outside on the 14' trx 250 es i have. It was backed out most of the way and the shift shaft was coming out. shift shaft goes in far enough to shift but not far enough for the bolt to hold it in. I guess i will shake it really good and see if will go the rest of the way. Much easier that taking off the rear cover. I guess i will need cover gaskets if i have to take it down.
Oh ok, I’m not real familiar with the 250 motors, I worked on one some but that was years ago and don’t remember much about it unfortunately. Most of these newer Honda’s will use a gasket sealant like Hondabond for the crankcase covers. There may be a gasket for the pull start housing like on the 350 in the video.
i did this to my 03 350 rancher,,but the nutrel light is not on and it wont turn over ,,,is there anything i can do to get it to turn over,,,,,,,,,how did you modify it to start,,,,,,,,,,,thanks
+robert allen ground the wire that goes to the neutral switch on the back of the crankcase. This will make the neutral light come on, the downside is it will be on all the time no matter what gear. I do not recall if it would still show what number gear it's in or not like N-1-2-3 etc. Hope this helps.
thanks,,,,,,,,,,,ok i got it , have to run a jumper from the green with a red striped wire where the wires plug together on the passenger side rear to the negative side of the battery,,,hope this helps someone,,,,thank you again killer atv
That would work too at least for a while. Forcing it to shift no matter what will probably end up with broken E shift gears eventually or maybe a bent shift fork.
Mike Flynn I wanted to do it right, sure you could do that if you wanted to. Someone also posted a link to the shift levers with hex ends on them that will work also.
That would of course be ideal but it’s not a “waste of time” if you already own the machine and don’t want to sell it to buy another used machine without ES, or maybe you found a good deal on an older ES machine with shifting trouble. Pretty common to see used ES machines for sale with shift problems for far far less than a good working footshift bike. Of course your not going to go into Honda and buy a new machine and take it home and do this mod, that would be foolish.
You’re lucky, some never have issues, some are nothing but trouble. This ATV in the video is owned by my grandfather and was never abused or ridden in water or anything. Last I looked there was still only about 2500km on the machine, he doesn’t use it very much, so I’m not sure if sitting was hurting it or what the issue was.
When I fixed It for him I gave him the option to troubleshoot the ES or bypass it. He chose to bypass the ES and convert it to footshift. It cost about half as much to do this as relaxing a shift motor. I didn’t replace the shift motor or try troubleshooting it at all. He had replaced angle sensors on it several times and was just done with it.
Can do that too but have to grind weld off to remove cover down the road, also have to watch you don’t melt the seal, still a good idea to remove the gears from the front case. If you look on eBay someone sells foot shifters to bolt into the hex shaft now, so that’s another option. I just like to do things “right” even if it is a bit overkill, I just posted it for the idea, how someone else wants to go about doing it is entirely up to them 👍
There is a difference between doing something, and doing something right lol. Or maybe I'm just picky and like for it to look OEM? Besides, I'd still have to pull the shift reduction gears.
will you share the parts list ? I have a 2005 rancher 400 with a ESC problem, its stuck in 3rd gear, shutters in reverse.. No one can seem to find the problem. Replaced shift motors, angle sensors and other things..

This won't work on the 400's, the 400's use Hondamatic's in them. Post a thread on HondaATV forums someone might be able to help, I can do basic troubleshooting but am no means experienced with the 400's.
Video could be a lot better if you actually showed the assembly of the replacement part. Also there is no testing of the bike after not even started, let alone if it shifts.
Could you post the list of the OEM part #'s? This is the best conversion I've seen so far. I need to do it right .....

Has it ever been done to convert es/foot shift just straight to automatic?

Be very careful welding on that shaft, you’ll burn the seal. There is supposed to be a shifter sold now to bolt onto the hex shaft, check eBay.
Exactly what I was thinking.. I’ll just tack weld it instead of alll that work.
When I manually shift mine it is hard to get in first gear then even harder to get into 2nd most of the time it don't go

This might be a dumb question but how is the clutch engaged when you do this with an automatic?
This doesn’t work with the automatic machines only the ES machines.

Should work fine as long as it’s an ES model and not the DCT/Automatic
Why not just buy a basic model instead of wasting time doing this?

$27 from PartZilla
do you know the part number for it I just can't find it

Buy a service manual and stop crying, cheap bastard!
Theres an easier solution. Just go to hondaesshifter.com. slides on the hex head and bolts on. They have youtube videos. Putting one on my rancher
This wasn’t about “easier” this is about doing it right, and you still need to pull the reduction gears out of the front shift motor assembly.
