Well, at least that H4831SC shoots well. Thank goodness for Chronographs, as we can keep adjusting our ballistic calculators, to the observed velocity for a particular lot of powder, and / or adjust our load back to similar velocities from the previous lot, as long as case fill allows for it.
I'm about ready to start loading 7mm PRC with H4831SC. I have both Federal Standard 215 Magnum Primers as well as Federal Gold Metal Match 210 Primers and Federal Standard 210 Primers. I will say this, the compound on the inside of the Standard Federal 215 Magnum Primers appears to vary greatly and almost looks slopped on by an apprentice primer maker.

When changing lots you have to do some work up. Increase charge a little bit and I am sure it will work out. I have had many powder lots do this. Brass was also fireformed so you might have decreased pressure as well

I completely agree. For Bench competition shooting, making all these changes could lead to too many variables.

I run a custom 7SAUM on a long action, I’m using N560 and Hornady 175ELD-X ADG brass. Currently at 2820fps in a 22in proof barrel Thunderbeast ultra 7 suppressor. I’m approaching finishing my 8th firing on this brass very impressed with ADG.

That is a drastic difference IMO from lot to lot. The Federal primer appears to have won this test on consistency. Thank you for demonstration.

100/2700 = .037 or 3.7% difference. Propellant manufacturers struggle to keep a 5% variation. So ADI did good. I find from a very clean barrel it takes 20 shots for the barrel to season into stability. Therefore, I would not pay any attention to SD/ES numbers before those first 20 shots, or to any strings of less then 20 shots. You need to shoot your strings at the same cadence as you would do in competition as well.

That’s actually a good way to think about it. Sounds a bit more impressive when you put it that way

Thank you for the primer test. It was informative. It might be nice if you re-do it with a slightly higher powder charge to get you closer to complete fill and previous velocities, assuming you can do so safely.

Very interesting results. Too many things changing to be able to determine a cause though; fire formed brass, new dies, new mandrels (how were you expanding before?), new powder lot and different primers.
The velocity you should be able to get back working up a new load, but that spike in ES/SD seems to indicate either a new inconsistency or that it doesn't like something in your process. How big of a size difference is there between the new and fire formed brass? Only time I've had ES/SD change significantly was when it affected case fill percentage and that was always on small cartridges like 6.5 Grendel or in instances when my case fill was already on the lower side (under 90 percent)

How are you liking your Seekins now that you've used it quite a bit? Thinking about giving one to myself for my 50th birthday.

Depends on what your plans are. If the budget allows I would go with a full custom or potential the new MPA rifle. There are some things I don’t like about the Seekins that led me to building a custom rifle.

@@RobsReloading the quick change barrels are intriguing. And ir seems without having ever used one that it's a lot of gun for the $. I doubt I'd ever use it in competition, just recreational target shooting. Possibly some hunting in situations where I don't have to walk very far. In a perfect world I'd build something on a Zeus if I really want quick change capabilities, or just buy an AI. But there's the whole cost issue. I may just say screw the whole quick change idea and get a Tac A1 or build something on an affordable action.

@@timothythompson6549 mine really never fed like it should. In my opinion I think there is something inherently with the action or the tenon that has caused issues. I’m not the only one who has had feeding issues.

Take your time putting together a custom build, exactly the way you want. Changing a barrel is not a big deal.

@@RobsReloading as the owner of a Ruger American Hunter that is exceptionally accurate but is exceptionally picky about what ammo and magazines it wants to fees from, I want no part of that. Especially from a rifle at the Hit's price point.

What front rest are you using?

Pretty sure it's a Protektor. I've got 1. Decent rest for four hundred bucks.

CCI 34 I hear is equivalent to magnum primers. Maybe that's the reason for the velocity drop?

    • @ewathoughts8476
      @ewathoughts8476 3 місяці тому

His first 5 shot string was with CCI #34s and the V0 average was only 14 - 19 fps faster than the Win and Fed primers all using the new lot of propellant. The drastic difference in V0 was with the old lot of propellant (cold bore) and CCI #34 primer. Too few shots of the old lot of propellant to make a judgement.
