WOW, when you started talking black on the bottom my brain went blank. But when you put the black on and the grain POPPED I was so surprised. That looked great. You have a good eye.
I continue to be amazed by your ability and dedication to your craft. Perhaps the best part for me is how you handle the challenges of your craft. Thanks again for your mentoring of life skills.
I love the shape of the bowl. It takes an artesian to look at the piece you started with and see the finished product. Love the purple and red outside that highlights the grain. Thanks for sharing this project.
That really did turn out great. I like the color contrast from the bottom to the top with the Live edge. This one reminded me of Phil Anderson's channel "Shady Acres woodshop. You both do great work.
I love the bowl. Good call to keep the grain and make a winged bowl. Glad the bark stayed on. The still picture at the end shows the wonderful grain and colours on that corner. Very well done as usual. Dave.
Thanks Dave, I wold love to get a piece with that grain all over, it was just mesmerising! The colouring is ok but it is one area I need to practice more. Mike😊
I know you put a lot of work in this piece and it shows. Also I’m so glad you made it food safe it will wonderful in the middle of a dinner table or full of fruit.😊❤
My mom and I love watching your videos, you always manage to make such interesting pieces out of wood most people would consider plain or unworkable. I never really thought about using a beeswax/mineral oil combo paste, it makes such a lovely finish!
Ash is one of my favorites to turn. I doubt I’ve had any with the grain such as yours yet. I think the color choice was perfect. I like using the black with the copper embellishing wax. Your skills never cease to amaze me Mike. I truly consider you a turner above most turners. Magnificent bowl my friend. Glad you chose to keep the top.
Mike, only recently started watching your channel but you are now one of my regular watches. Lovely bowl and you've given me some inspiration for a couple of pieces of Ash I have in my pile. Thank you.
I love what you have done with that Mike, very clever to be able to leave all the beautiful grain in. I love turning Ash, it is such a nice wood to work with,
I just recently found your channel Mike, while im laid up from surgery and i have to tell you I'm impressed! I was a wee bit iffy about the wood dye on the bottom but i have to say,you made a believer out of me! After watching three or four of your videos now im working my way down thru them so when im finally able to get back in my shop ill have plenty of ideas. Again, great work and great content! Ron
Thanks Ron! and thanks for getting in touch. I'm not great at dying wood but I keep having a go every now and then, not everyone likes it but that is fine, it would be a dull world if we all liked the same. I wish you a fast recovery so you can get back in the shop. All the best, Mike
What an excellent piece of art you created!, such skill!.... I would love your skill, being a retired toolmaker, machining was a passion of mine, if only I had found videos like this sooner, I would like to make a pair of 'Love Cups' as a gift for a friends daughter who is getting married soon, how nice it would be to create something unique and singular rather than the usual commercial gift.... one can dream.....
Thanks Steve, a lot of my family now get bowls for presents, my wife gave her cousin one yesterday for her birthday and it brought tears to he eyes, shame, I thought it was a nice piece, still you can't please everyone 😃
Very nice piece of Ash. Good that you left the crotch piece on, it really made the top pop! The dying of the bottom is interesting. I've charred ash and had good results but will give that a try, it really looked nice. Thanks for sharing Mike, it turned out beautiful! Take care, Dave
Cheers Dave, I would have love d to have charred this one but with the winds it stood a good chance of splitting. I'm not great at colouring but I am getting a little better 😊
Glad you managed to save some bark Mike it really sets it off nicely. Ash is such a lovely wood to work with, I started scroll saw work with ash, really must try and get hold of a chunk for the lathe again. Thanks for all the tips and tricks you share, they're invaluable to a relative newcomer. Keep 'em coming.
I think leaving such a large edge is a very interesting decision. I think I would have tried to make the edge kind of like a teardrop/raindrop so the interesting grain pattern would still be present while the rest of the bowl would have a rounded edge. Ultimately the bowl still looks really good and cool.
Lovely bowl Mike - I really like the outside colours/grain contrast! Incidentally, the original blank would have been totally fine turning outboard, even before you trimmed it - she can take it!
@@MikeHolton seriously Mike - I only just tried mine out last month with a big (52cm) piece of Mallee burl, it was really out of balance too. I found it helped stability of the lathe to move the headstock to about centre of the lathe bed. It coped no problem even with a bit of wobble I was impressed!
@@PBUCKY1969 Haha, and I thought I was brave 😃. On a side note I see your user name ends in 1969, was that your year of birth? If so, it was mine as well 😃
Fantastic piece, I have said it before but I can’t see what you see, it’s truly amazing how you have these brilliant design techniques, I watch a lot of you tube woodturning but you do so many different things from pewter to milliput to colours to soapstone it just such a vast range of different things where as a lot of turners stay in their comfort zone, well done mate.
Lovely
Thanks Sandra 😀

for sharing this project.
Thank you very much!so glad you like it ☺️
Regarding the catch : It really is a feature, not a bug. I love how the bowl turned out, glad that you listen to the wood!
Haha thanks Judith, the wood knows better than me so I know always to listen, in that respect it's a lot like my wife 😃
That really did turn out great. I like the color contrast from the bottom to the top with the Live edge. This one reminded me of Phil Anderson's channel "Shady Acres woodshop. You both do great work.
Thanks so much David, I love Phil's work thanks! All the best, MIke

@@katm6 thanks 👍 😁
I’m glad you saved that crotch section. It turned out beautifully! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Brenda, I would love to know where the other half of that piece is 😊
Amazing winged bowl lovely grain as always with ash. Shows up even more with the black. Very brave turning this shape. Lovely. JC.
Thanks John 😀
Great looking finished product. Good to see ash being preserved when so much of it is dying.
Hi Rob, thanks very much. Luckily in the UK Ash is doing well, it is just about everywhere. All the best, Mike
An excellent result from a beautiful piece of ash. Applying the colour to the outside works very well. Well turned, Mike!

I just become mesmerized watching your woodturning and enjoy all the techniques used to produce the final product. Thank you!
Thanks so much Gary and thanks for your support, Mike 😃
Nice work. I have always loved the crotch grain in wood. It’s like a present, you never know what’s in there until you expose it.
You are so right Barry 😃
The top of this bowl has really nice graining and other features. Glad you kept the pretty corner!
Thanks Mary, I just had to keep that corner intact 😀
Your ash bowl turned out better than I thought it would
Thanks Bob 😀
Now I have a use for the couple of kilograms of beeswax that has been wrapped up in blocks for my failed adventures in candlemaking.
Haha, you can make some great finishes with wax 😃
Never seen a bowl like this before , it's a real beauty. Seems unique!
Thanks Nana, this one was a whole lot of fun to make
I really like how you saved the crotch area in the final turning. The coloring was also interesting.

The black and red worked well on the bottom and the contrast with the top looks great. thanks for sharing
Thanks Alan, it worked better than I had hoped
Lovely piece of wood expertly turned. The use of the stain on the base has really brought out the grain of the wood.
Thanks David, I don't profess to be an expert in colouring but I do enjoy it 😃
Love a nice chunk of ash

It’s so lovely peeling back layers and revealing beauty!

Love the way the color highlights the grain
