- In this Woodturning project, we're going to be trying something new - partial segmented turning. Segmented turning is a type of turning where the workpiece is divided into small, individual pieces that are turned by hand.
This is a pretty challenging Woodturning project, so be sure to watch the video tutorial carefully and take along the supplies listed to make sure you have a successful experience!
If you're looking for a fun and challenging project to do in your spare time, try out this Woodturning experiment - it'll be worth it!
Thanks for watching and feel free to leave comments in the chat below.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing. To clear the finishing pastes out of the grooves you might try a soft toothbrush. Put the polish rag downhill from the brush and it will catch the clean out. If you use your wife's toothbrush, be sure to put it back before she catches you!
Take care, Dave
Thanks for the tip, I will keep one of the kids toothbrushes in there, the wife will find out, not sure how but she always does 😂
The Holm Oak pattern is evocative of tigers...beautiful.
I know,. I have a few more of these, can't wait to turn them .
The figuring on the holm oak is amazing. Both beautiful and bold. That's another one for my List of Lovelies.
It really is, I have been trying to get hold of some more but it is really hard to find in the UK 😀
Love the stripes
Love the idea.
Love the result.
Love the toothbrush comment!
I’m off to go and reclaim those scraps and glue them together.
Thanks, Mike
Haha have fun Nicholas 😊
I believe your bowl has a split personality! Beautiful combination. Another successful project. 👍
Thanks so much! 😊
Lovely the way the grain lines complement the alternating stripes of the other side of the bowl. This is very interesting.
Thank you very much, this was a test for a larger bowl 😃
I love the grain pattern on the Holm oak. It's very captivating. Beautiful bowl as always
Thank you so much Jeffery, that holm oak is pretty special!
Ich bereue die Zeit nicht, die ich mit "Ihnen" verbringe. Die Schale ist wieder wunderschön 👍🏼👍🏼
Vielen Dank, das ist so schön zu sagen, alles Gute, Mike
Very slick end result! I love the tiger-stripey look of the grain of the Holm Oak (?) on the very outside edge of the bowl. Great job as usual!
Thanks Tom, that holm oak is just beautiful, just wish I had some larger pieces. All the best, Mike
I love how the grain looks! Almost like there is a rose pattern on the bottom of the bowl in the oak.
Holm Oak is just so beautiful, just wish I could get hold of some more
Good planning layout and great execution. Love the grain on the Oak - definitely got to get me some.
I love how that hybrid bowl turned out! Happy Birthday!🥳
Thank you Heather😊, it's been a crazy first year!
The whole process is fascinating. 16:45 I love looking at the grain patterns of oak. They are never boring. I also like repeating patterns such as the light and dark stripes. 16:45
Thanks so much, the Holm oak is just beautiful!
Great bowl! I like how you ended up with a tiny bit of white on the striped end. Beautiful work
Thanks! This was a lot of fun to make 😃
I love these woods together. This is a beautiful pattern!
Thank you! 😊
That's a cracking little bowl, gorgeous. You have my sympathies on the current temperature , all the brass monkeys in my workshop left for the winter. Can barely feel my fingers after a couple of hours.
😀 yep, sounds pretty much like my experience. 😂
That “test” came out great. 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Another beautiful work of art.
Could I suggest a video on what the parts of the laithe are. Ie,you used a worm screw today, the gripping jaws, etc. Why different speeds.and as you already said you'll be doing polishers This would help me, and I'm sure some others are just starting out in the world of turning. Thanks for sharing the information you passed on to us all. 🏴👌👍🏴
That is a good idea Charles, thanks. Rather than a dedicated video, I'll feed the info into future videos.
Love the graphic nature of the parallel lines in contrast with the curvaceous form of the bowl a work of art.
Thanks, I really appreciate your comments and support ☺️
@@MikeHolton Am a total newbie at woodturning but a art college graduate love the contrast in line and form - makes it for me visually - plus the grain look cool. Have FB msg you
@@proskipper1 Hi Tim, got your message, thanks.
Recently found your channel, Mike, and it is quickly becoming a favorite! I am by no means a skilled craftsman at turning, but I love it and am constantly trying something "different" at it. Keep 'em coming and I'll keep watching. Maybe even steal some of your ideas. I've enjoyed every video I've watched so far, so thank you for that.
Wow, thanks so much for your kind words and feel free to use any of my ideas, after all that is what this channel is all about. All the best and I hope I can keep living up to expectations. Mike
Nice bowl. Good glue job, and great contrasting wood selection.
Thanks Noel 😁
Beautiful work Mike! The quality of your finish is inspiring, looking forward to more.
Thanks, glad you like it 😀
That is sweet!! The different woods complement the design.
Thanks so much Lisa 😀
Another just spectacular creation from the mind of Mike!! 😂 awesomesauce!!!
Haha, you have no idea what does on in my head, a lot of the things I would be daft to try but . . . . 😀
I love the bowl and the grain in the holm oak. Well done as usual.
The "spirits" aka "Murphy" in my shop would not allow me to do a single step glue-up without some issues. You did well to have no glue gaps.
Machinists like to use a "V" piece to clamp round items. The "V" provides two points of contact on the round work. I now do the same if I need to clamp round wood items. It is easy to cut a shallow "V" e.g., 5 - 10 deg angle in a piece of scrap.
I would have been tempted to put burn lines in the bottom of the bead to accentuate the bead.
Dave.
Thanks Dave, I love the idea of a burn line, it's not something I ever do. I will look into a V clamp as the give away bowl will need a lot of clamping"
All the best, Mike
Eine sehr schöne Schale! Ich mag diese Kombination aus gewachsenem und zusammengesetztem Holz!!!
Vielen Dank und danke fürs Zuschauen
Very attractive piece, Mike! My son-in-law brought me some cedar last night...I discovered it was very wet! Need to give it time to dry.. Have a great day! Jim
Thanks Jim, what a nice son in law you have! I love turning cedar, especially for the smell!
Nice job! Definitely a successful experiment. Just getting back into turning after about 30 years...looking for info on finishes especially. Lots of great information, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Mark, I'll be doing more on finished when it gets warmer 😀
That is lovely. I had heard of Holm Oak but never seen any... it's very attractive.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Many thanks Brendan, this is the first holm oak I've turned although I do have a few more on the shelf. Amazing looking grain.
What a gorgeous, tacile bowl you have produced. I don't do any wood turrning, I was looking for something my 34 year old son could possibly do (as therapy.) He wanted to do woodworking at school but got put into electronics instead which he hated. Anyway, I've become addicted to watching your fascinating videos. All the very best. Janet.
Thanks Janet, woodturning is great therapy, it's very relaxing and requires full conversation, so easy to get into the flow and block out the world. All the best, Mike
Hi Mike
Well done there. That's a very interesting combination of woods and a lovely finish too, however, the holm oak is so beautiful that I couldn't cut it in half and would love to see a whole piece used in a future job.
Hi Rob, of course you are quite right. I've had a stack of 5 6" blanks on my shelf for ages and not turned one of them. Having never turned it before I did not realise how nice it was until it was already in half. I'm trying to get my hands on more now before I turn the rest of what I have. Such a shame it's not a UK species of wood.
Sorry just realised it is grown in the UK, if you see anyone selling some please let me know.
This is uniquely different. Very nice!
Ah yes but how would it look in a log cabin?
Another lovely bowl and inspiration for future project ideas for myself.
Hi Matt, so glad I have been able to inspire. All the best, Mike
Beautiful work! not the traditional segmented bowl. Love watching your videos!
Thank you so much William, and I always look forward to you comments😀
Very nice bowl! I did a segmented bowl made from quilted maple, with black walnut and white oak stripes offset on the middle. I think I like yours better.
Not sure Dan, yours sounds like an amazing combination!
I really appreciate the experiments and the explanation of the products.
Really glad you like them. I have lots more to come 😀
Very lovely ... I think it passed the test!
I think so too, thanks 😀
What a beautiful contrast. Great work!!
Thanks very much 😀
Love how it turned out. Lovely.
Thanks Shirley
Beautiful! Great work!
Thank you very much! 😀
That turned out great!
Thanks! This one was fun 😃
What a great bowl and idea. LOVE It
Thanks Steve, must admit, this one came out better than I had hoped. 😀
Excellent videos. Thanks!
You are welcome! 😃
Love it when a plan comes together..... Great job and love the pattern.....
Glad you like it Dale, thanks for watching 😌
Another lovely piece👏
Thank you so much Vini 😀
Beautiful piece, well done.
Thank you very much David 😀
That holm oak is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to see if any of your videos I've yet to watch, have you turning another piece of it.
Love the contrast of the woods you chose and between the straight lines and curve of the bowl.
Cracking job Mike
As always, thank you for sharing your amazing talent with us 😊
Morning! Not turned any more holm oak since this one, I am always keeping my eye out for a larger piece, the grain is just mind blowing. 😀
@MikeHolton good morning. Aaah, ok, well, I certainly hope you manage to source some, and we get to see its beauty revealed, as well as whatever masterpiece you create for us next 😉
@@fionacrouch1732 Thanks, the video is me messing around with texture and doing pretty badly 🤣
@MikeHolton lol I'm sure it's not, but looking forward to Tuesday
@@fionacrouch1732 🤣
Beautiful job Mike!
Thanks so much Scott😀
love the wood species selection,
Thanks, I've been buying a lot of off cuts recently so expect to see more 😀
Another interesting bowl. I also use oak and sepele - I managed to get some cheap off cuts. Keep up the good work 🌞
Thanks Ray 😃
Great experiment. The bowl is lovely.
Thanks Doug, I feel a bit more confident now about the idea I have for the celebration bowl 😀
loveley piece , as a novice your videos are very imformative .. I am learning a lot , thank you
Thanks Jon, I am so pleased they help 😀
Looks good!
Thanks 👍
That looks great Mike. Loving the stripes together with the Holm Oak.
Glad you liked it, it was a test so that was not my primary goal so the end result was far better than I had hoped.
Great Work!
Thanks! 😃
Beautiful bowl and craftsmanship
Thanks Earl ☺️
Very lovely bowl! I would say your experiment turned out fantastic 😊
Thanks Mary 😃
I am always amazed at what comes out of whatever you put together and stick in the Lathe. Never knew that there is so much involved in producing such items which are both useful and decorative at the same time. Impressed.
Thank you very much Peter 😊
My comment is “Brilliant”. I love watching and enjoying and would love to win anything you make.
Haha thanks Roy, the next win opportunity will be when I reach 20,000 subscribers, all the best, MIke
I love the design, and will try something similar.
Please do and let me know how you get on. All the best, Mike
Experiments are some of the best pieces in my experience. I do like the contrast between the 3 woods. Great work
Thank you very much! Experimenting is fun 🙂
Trés belle pièce bravo
Merci beaucoup 😀
Absolutely gorgeous I'll also be giving true grit a try
Thanks. True Grit works nicely, I'm very happy with what I have seen so far.
Nice job mike !
Glad you liked it Jean :)
Nice! Good idea to add different types together.
Thanks, glad you like it 😀
A nice piece love you grain on the Holm oak, i have some here seasoning cant wait to turn it.
I have a few more pieces and will be sad when it's gone, must look out for more.
Now this is creative! Very nice 👌
Thanks a lot 😊
Interesting contrasts.. makes a gorgeous bowl.
Keep up the good work, even though I don't turn wood, I'm learning a lot through your adventures ;-)
Thank you very much Jaxx, we must get you turning, with your creativity I bet you would be great!
I'd love to turn.. just whether I have enough strength on my hands to be able to complete something LOL
Really Nice result, well done Mike
Thank you! Cheers!
That turned out very nice. Not all segmented turnings have to be made of rings. 🙂
I just found your channel. I’ll definitely be watching your previous videos.
Thanks Dan and thanks for the vote of confidence, I try to be as honest as I can with my videos, if I fail then I'll talk about what I did wrong etc. All the best, Mike
Another great project Mike I like the concept 👌 👍 👏
Thanks 👍 glad you liked it.
so pretty! nice to see that science prevails :)
Thanks Dee, science always wins 😀
Another lovely piece Mike, and a successful experiment for whatever comes next.
The holm oak seems like a lovely wood, I hadn’t heard of it before.
Hi Mike, I've not done much with it before either, I've had 5 blanks of it sitting on my shelf for about 6 months gathering dust. Going to have to think of something interesting to do with the rest 😀
iinteresting looking bowl. very nice.
Thank you very much!
Just stumbled across your channel. My wife and I are both new to turning and have found your style inspirational. Love both this and the elm burl bowl.
Thanks! A warm welcome to you both, if you have any questions feel free to post in the chat, I always answer. All the best, Mike
Très joli boulot finition parfaite, bravo.
si gentil, merci beaucoup
Like your work Mike. Looking forward to the vids on how to make your own polish
Thanks Nigel, they will be made as soon as it's a little warmer :D
I enjoy your channel....keep up the good work and I will keep watching !
Thanks so much and I promise, I will always do my best 😀
Cracking job, Grommit! 😀
Thanks Wallace 😂
Nice bowl, it’s my 55th birthday on the 16th . Happy 1st birthday to your channel as well.
Happy Birthday for the 16th Neal, I hit that landmark next year 🙂
Klein außer fein👏 wie immer sehr schön 👌
Vielen Dank, mein Freund, alles Gute, Mike
I love this piece it is beautiful! I just wood pieces
Thanks Gloria, I was so pleased with how it came out.
Very Nice!
Thanks John
Awesome going to have five that a try keep up with the videos 👍
Haha, who else do you follow? I try and keep up with loads. 😀
I like the idea I might have to give that a shot myself
Please do, it's a lot of fun 😃
Nice bowl! Interested to see what happens to the other half of the holm oak...
You and me both :D
Another stunning piece Mike
Love the grain in the Holm Oak..I've never turned Holm Oak but not think I need to 😊
The True Grit looks good I'll give that a try as nearly out of YG
Thanks my friend, the True Grit worked just fine and I need to buy a lot more holm oak 😀
Nice bowl.
Thank you Jason 😀
Really great content that you have put together. I am very interested in the make your own polishes and wax. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
Thank you very much! As soon as I can feel my fingers after an hour in the workshop they will be done :D
Nice contrast
Thanks William, that holm oak is stunning
Thank you Mike; you are brave enough to try the experiments, and we all get to learn; I love the generosity of your approach. The bowl is great, the contrasts in the woods enhance the look for sure. - And sensible to use two colours for the strips not three; can't miss one out! 😀 Keep up the good work!
Hahaha, I can still make a mistake with two colours 😂 that made me laugh. Thanks David.
@@MikeHolton I believed we share a similar sense of humour (thankfully, no offence intended!)
@UCWiIYUSEPgJ%F0%9F%98%822YD6xquxUYFg I think you are right, I'm very hard to offend and I make fun of my own mistakes way more than anyone else :D
beautiful bowl, but i thought that solid piece of oak had so much character in it i would have liked to seen a bowl from the entire piece! Still great work, as its just my opinion!
Hi Greg, 100% agree with you, I have had 4 of these holm oak blanks on my shelf for forever and because they were not huge(6") I've not bothered with them, plus I had not turned holm oak before so I had no idea how amazing the grain was. When I started turning I got a bit of a shock at how nice the grain was and I am now trying to buy larger pieces of it.
Super...Super...Super...big like !!!
Friend you are very talented
Thank you very much but I think I'm still a way behind you. 😀
Hi Mike, great contrast between the ho lm oak and the s epelI and beech, real-l
Nice shape to the bowl as well
Thanks Steve, I was thinking of burning it 😋😂
@@MikeHolton Mike it was only a piece of Walnut, you really need to get over it and move on just let it go😃😃 lol
@@thehampshirewoodturner hahahahahaha, ok that was the last time......
That turned out awesome Mike that Holm Oak has a stunning grain pattern I found true grit better than Y.G it has some carnuba wax in it so you get a nice shine even before the finish Well done
Thanks Colin, I did not know that about TG but good to know :)
What can I say science is fun and don't worry about your mind going faster than your mouth can keep up with it happens to me all the time 😅
Haha thanks Troy 😀
Didn't think that this will come out so cool. Btw I love the Sound of your lathe and yes, I'm envious for I've " only" got a Herald.
Thanks Kerstin, the lathe sounds amazing especially at speed. The Herald is a great lathe, my old lathe could not hold a candle to it.
@@MikeHolton hold the candle ... that's interesting. In Germany we say couldn't pass the water to it. I think it goes back to ancient table culture.
@@kerstin4516 That is interesting! I love things like this, we need to compare a few idioms
@@MikeHolton well, there's another one: beating around the bush is talking around th hot broth
@@kerstin4516 Nice, do you have one for "Jump on the bandwagon"?
Hi Mike, love your work, I have just come across your channel, and so appreciate your steady approach without all the hype, so relaxing to watch. I wonder if you have considered a Chinese diesel heater, I've got one in my workshop which is 14x7 and it works very well in the colder months, makes wood working much more enjoyable. Regards Trevor
Hi Trevor, many thanks and welcome , I appreciate your support. Not really thought about a diesel heater but I may just look into getting one this winter. All the best and thanks again, Mike
Really nice Mike good contrast that oak looked really nice, not a criticism but isn't it funny how a little black dot in the oak can draw your eye 🙂
Haha, yep and my wife would agree with you, that is the first thing she mentioned 😂
Very attractive
Thanks Susan 😀
