I agree on most points. The recent title tracks are trying to pull in younger audiences and it worked. Teddy Bear is still in melon charts for several months now and Bubble has touched Top10. I believe this is just a phase and stayc will eventually show a mature side. Just look at their recent covers of Dududu and Love shot, im sure the girls wanted those too. Bep knows how to do multiple genres, its just a matter of time.
I think the whole concept of STAYC was never very clear to kpop listeners, but they were always so objective and clear about what they intended to do with their music, even the group's name refers so clearly to their musical purpose.

Some very good points you made. I also think there’s difference between commercial success vs quality of the song. Beautiful Monster was way ahead of its time and so didn’t do that well on charts. I agree that they are in good hands with BEP as their producer, and they will release even more diverse songs in the future. Their b-sides are truly high quality as well.

Since So Bad, the concept of STAYC was already teenfresh, they said this in their debut showcase, the main concept of teenfresh is a positive message for young people and bringing music that heals. The only song that deviated from this concept was BM, which the producers said they wanted to do something less kpop.
tbh I think the reason why they're not as popular anymore is because they are trying to differentiate themselves from other new 4th Gens. Not to bring other groups down, but some of the new releases from other groups look and sound similar IMHO. Most of em are kinda dark-ish and mature. Them trying to be cute and bubbly (pun intended) is a way for them to be different, which is important when going against big company groups. They did mention on Tanaka-san's channel that they wanna erase the "highschooler" feel that they have, so they might transition back to So Bad/ Run2U vibes in the near future. I'm liking the path that they're taking rn tho. I think they're doing really well considering they aren't from a big company. Tho I think BEP will definitely take good care of em. He makes sure all tracks, even b-sides are bops. They might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they're putting out the best stuff that they can, I think.

Also yeah I definitely agree, Teddy Bear and Bubble seem to take the cute concept to a whole new level compared to what I’ve seen before, and you’re right, it definitely helps them stand out a lot from other 4th gen groups. I didn’t know that they mentioned they want to move away from the high schooler concept, so I’ll definitely be interested to see where they end up going next!

its funny how much ifans love stereotype since korea didnt like it and it affected their momentum at the time. i think the bubblegum sound helps stayc stand out in korea which is more important in the long run and the cute image just isn’t popular internationally anymore. if asap or stereotype came out today i dont think they would be as well received
What's the problem with beautiful monster as a song is a mystery to meeee. Its a good song. Unfortunately, they just raise the sound higher by one octave and it became sounding like screeeam. They shouldnt done it like that. Especially with yoon's chorus. She was not the best person to do the chorus.

If you listen to STAYC's discography in release order, from Beautiful Monster onward I agree that it definitely feels like, "we took a big risk that didn't pay off, and we're going to go back to what works". I always recommend fans dive into their B-sides for that early STAYC sound (TEENFRESH's B-sides are fantastic). I think it's important to also understand that performing well domestically is crucial to building a solid financial foundation to be able to experiment more and continue with a more "internationally appealing" sound. I feel like people forget that High Up is a new company, and STAYC is their first ever group. Appealing to Korean audiences makes the most sense at this point in time for their business. Twice is a great example of this. They are THE top-selling gg domestically, yet I literally did not listen to them until their sound shifted towards a more mature concept with Fancy. Unfortunately Fancy started the downtrend of their music doing well domestically, but not only were they a Big 4 company, Twice also had enough revenue and established success in Korea to start taking that risk with their sound. Finding a balance between the two is incredibly difficult, and many groups struggle to maintain both markets. I believe as High Up becomes more successful with STAYC, and the girls age, their sound will mature and they will likely get the international audience back.
I agree! I don’t mind the “detour” they’ve taken since Beautiful Monster. - still to this day, there hasn’t been a STAYC song I haven’t enjoyed. I’m excited to see what they do next!

STAYC def did not solely suffer from bandwagon stans leaving them. I'm a swith and this video is super accurate. Their golden musical era was up to ASAP and Stereotype. After that they had some okay b-sides here and there, but the title tracks and hype was just not it what the original swiths were signing up for. RUN2U was even horrible to me. Beautiful Monster was okay, but not wow and should've been a b-side. They completely lost me with Poppy and Teddy Bear and whatever even the new song is. I forgot what it's called. That'll show you how badly this decline is. I agree so much with "child fresh" because this is not teen fresh at all. It's horrible for them. I don't get how they get so much success with it at all. Grown women doing child concepts gives me the ick. Which hurts me, because I love the original STAYC.
I think maturing their concept will be something they look into eventually, since it’s kind of obvious that ASAP and Stereotype managed to capture both the domestic and international markets very well. I think it’s just a matter of when they decide to reach back out to the global market. It’s kind of hard to describe why the “kid fresh” concept performs so well in Korea; I imagine it’s a lot of things (some which may be a little concerning, when we look at the type of people who are showing up to their fan events). I completely understand them wanting to make sure they have a solid-enough fan base in Korea first, before reaching out globally. BEP was a huge factor to TWICE’s success in their early career, so I imagine they’re aiming for a similar trajectory when it comes to STAYC; it’ll be a sound that refines itself over time that’s in line with what the members themselves are wanting to do
I do get that it's kinda "icky" for grown adults to go cutesy, but I don't think this is too bad. They aren't even 25 yet so I still think of em as younger sisters. I think if they just try to blend in with the mature trend rn, they'd just vanish. I'm a SWITH since Young Luv, and I love em to death, but I don't think they'd be able to compete with Le Sserafim and IVE if they do the same concept they do.
I think they wanna be different. Just like how TWICE started off as cutesy, and Blackpink was girl crush. Having em both producing "same" flavors of music is just gonna be bad overall I think.

Ultimately I think it’s such a good idea that they started off with the darker “so bad” concept before really getting into teenfresh, so now they’re kind of known for pulling off a couple of different styles and it frees them up a little bit to do whatever they want
@@choujimi true. I think it also eliminates the risk for their fanbase to just shift and decline when they change genres. Look at Itzy, they deviated from their original sound, so a lot of their fandom left em (not me tho, kind of a sucker for JYP groups). It's because they've been doing the same concepts for so long, that their new sound threw the fans off. Twice's switch was risky too, good thing it was received positively.
Groups who pull out the same concepts over and over wouldn't have this problem, but if they wanna have longevity and wanna do more music in the long run, being versatile is the way. STAYC and BEP being the talented bastards that they are (lol) are probably planning stuff in the long run. Probably why they wanna be versatile.
