Hi Paul, excellent review. I’ve just come from an M into 520 and it’s definitely not an M. Living in the country commuting twice weekly to the city it soaks up the k’s. 1070km range on a tank and easily does the normal highway and city speeds. With ACC on, lane keep, traffic jam assist and semi auto lane change I hardly have to intervene on a 100km trip. I’ve had the sub 4 sec AWD rocket and maybe a handful of times in 4 years it went into launch control….
Nice one boss, enjoy in good health. If you have solar, I would have really considered the i5. Its the poor mans M5. And no fuel bill. I get it, electric still has to sell itself to the average punter, myself included, though the better half is wearing me down. Another couple years and we will consider where the market lands, and if there is mass take up, and providing the infrastructure is there, we may make a move. I test drove an e-tron when they first arrived here, after belting the hell out of it, launches from lights etc, the sales bird in the passenger seat sheepishly lets out the sticker ... $185k ... we promptly return to the dealership .. It was ok, but not $185k good, noting this is just a Q5 with batteries.
Why does it matter? It's more than capable of reaching 63km/h in a 60 zone in a few seconds, which then results in a $200+ speed camera fine being issued.
Thank you for the great video with honest and precise details. I’ve had my speced up eDrive40 for about 3 months and got 6k on the clock. I did test drive many similar cars before I bought the i5 including Tesla, Taycan, BYD, Polestar etc but hands down this is much better car in terms of comforts, tech, specs etc. just love the dynamic dampers and 4 wheel steering. I have owned 2 consecutive previous 5 series models and this one has a pretty amazing and reliable driver assistance system including automatic lane change when you put the blinkers on and turn your head. The most remarkable thing is the level of accuracy and trust you can put on them. The driver fatigue monitoring system is just next level unlike previous generations. Just tried to trick it in a few different scenarios and it did just pick up when I was showing signs of actual tiredness. Also i5 is a bit bigger than the predecessor in terms of external and also interior dimensions. The rear seat leg and head room do feel bigger than the previous version as well. Compared to my 2021 M550i (literally the lite version of M5), i5 does feel quite underpowered but compared to many other similarly priced electric and ICE cars, i5 has more than enough power and agility that you will mostly be the first to get off green lights. And the RWD with very responsive electric motor does make it so lively and fun to drive and you can put your back out secretly, without anyone hearing a raging engine if you really want. Overall, the i5 eDrive40 is a very practical, comfortable and fun to drive car that you can spend hours in without getting bored. Plus you get 5 year free charging, servicing and 8 year free roadside. Cheers.

When I heard about the increased weight and looks I ran out and bought a G30 530 X drive in the States. Surprisingly, I found the car not very comfortable with the US requirement for Leather on the comfort seats and purchased Massage and Ventilation (This was used so I had no choice). I recently rented a G 60 petrol last week and found the Verganza seats much more comfortable than my G30 and the car felt much more comfortable on long drives. I am warming up to the looks of this car also. Overall I really liked the G60. after driving it vs the G30. How did they get better MPG ratings with the extra weight? I don't like the screen based systems vs the knobs of my G30.l My biggest nuance in quality was cheap feeling turn signal knobs, and the horn *(Cheap plastic). Aside from that, the car drove better (Comfort vs sport) and felt like a luxury car. Surprised how well it rode with 19 inch wheels. Looks like the only way they can force ev's on people is by offering less and less decent ice options. A540d would be better in almost every way. That engine with a smallish plug-in hybrid system would be pretty much perfect. Heck even the 2.0d with a plug-in system would be fine. Or just throw in the X5 50e's system. 500hp, 4wd and even in the X5 it manages over 50miles on ev easily.
While I am a BMW aficionado , I have some reservations about this new 5. Yay for saloons and this bigger 5 is a step up but having the 135kw motor as the entry model is not good. It should at least have the 190 kw motor from the 330i M Sport. Spending a whole lot more on the electric model does not make sense for me. Also imagine the crippling depreciation but if people have the money, then go for it! It appears that ride, handling still have the BMW touch but personally I would rather have a 2023 550i M Sport with that beautiful V8. A very good review though- well done.
What a waste of time BMW, offering the 520i. To put it into context on how slow it is, a 2WD Mazda CX-3 has the same power to weight ratio. They should have offered the 530e or 550e that you’re able to get in the UK. I hope they bring the 5 series wagon here. That looks the part
520i is too slow and too expensive. The electric one is too bloody expensive and not all wheel or fast enough or have enough range. European manufacturers are f'ed. The Chinese EV makers and Tesla will eat their breakfast, lunch and their dinner
That's a funny comment, and obviously a result of you never sitting in a European car at 200+ km/h on a German autobahn for hours on end, and then doing the same in a Chinese or Japanese or Korean car, and realizing how superior European cars are. Not even premium brands, a regular brand like Skoda, Peugoet, Renault, etc. makes a Lexus feel like a cheap plasticy tin can on high speeds. It's easy to judge cars when they're sitting still or driving slowly, anyone can make a car perform well at that speed. European cars have deep quality to them, not surface level like others do. It's easy to make a car look flashy, but hard to make it fundamentally excellent at what it does. Europe is still the big daddy and can pocket the rest of the world single-handedly. The whole Chinese, Japanese and Korean industry DEPENDS on Europe. All the brands like Kia, Hyundai, all Chinese brands..why do you think they're developing so fast? Because they bought designers and engineers from European brands who turned those brands around overnight. Hyundai is ran by a guy who led the M team in BMW, Tesla has a bunch of Audi employees, a bunch of Chinese brands have Porsche employees, Williams employees, etc. If Europeans with their superior talent, skill and knowledge left those brands, we'd quickly go back to the times of Kia and Hyundai's being cheap plastic toys people made fun of. Tesla's are already that. Any car anywhere in the world that comes out that's good has European fingerprints on it. The chassis was developed by some engineering company in Europe, the drive train, the design, etc. You want great suspension parts, you buy European. You want great tires, you buy European. You want a great gearbox in your car, you go to Europe. Etc., etc., etc. It's easy to hate on Europe because you're jealous of the fact it secretly runs the planet and dominates the automotive industry while the rest are unsuccessfully playing catch-up, but ease off on the copium, it's gonna do you good.
Im a BMW fan by heart - but i can't say i like the new g60 models. Much of it have been switched to this chinese kind of look, and the grill looks all fake compared to the G30's - the interior is much like if you bought a tesla, it looks scrapped, but they left big monitors and screens in the car, and less "real" buttons, which is a big downgrade in my eyes. I think im gonna keep my G30 for a long time.
I have the previous gen 5 series. Extremely happy with my car and I did not experience the new model as having a lot of cheap plastic. In fact, it feels really luxurious. I just miss genuine leather. I don't like the "verganza". But, that's just me LOL
@@derser541A six cylinder is better than a four cylinder in almost all cases. BMW should offer them instead of only 4 cylinders and Plug-ins. And your argument about not needing the extra power is ironic considering the plug-ins have more than a 530 would have.

@@danielbredenkamp3957 I'd prefer if someone with actual knowledge and experience to answer the question. If I want an uninformed opinion, I will let you know. Ugly, first time I saw it I just sighed out of disappointment. G30 is a million times better. The future is going to be a pretty boring place the way the industry is going, with everything being battery electric and having god awful design.
Take the bmw steering wheel off and it’s like any other modern luxury car with those big, curvy dash displays. Prefer the more traditional bmw interiors
BMW will eventually kill the 5 series here in Australia I imagine just like Tesla with the Model S, I rarely see any G30 5 series’s on the road and with this new 5 series starting at a healthy house deposit BMW will be left with no choice but to axe it from our market because nobody is going to buy it. They’ll probably axe the 7 as well, I can count on one hand how many current model 7’s I’ve seen. Doubt we’ll see another A8/S8 from Audi and Mercedes is the only one doing ok with the S class, still not great though.
I am very glad that this car isn't made intentionally ugly, but it so generic 🙄 BMW did say they know not to mess with the 3 Series and 5 Series that are staples of their line-up, but I am not going to praise them because just because you made a bunch of ugly cars it doesn't make your new generic car beautiful. But, overall I really like this :) I don't love it like previous 5 Series but I really like it :),

The 5 on the c pillar ruins it for me. Seats seem cheap also
I wonder how would the side by side road trip on these models stack up compared to the 7 series 🤔
People comparing plastic chinese cars with bmw, get serious pls. Starting from aluminum frame that is on bmw 100% thicker, wider, etc..
you're not buying 520 because performance and braking.
Hah, I didn't know the tesla s isn't sold here anymore. Shame, best looking Tesla imo.
I don't drive my e39 525i m sport much anymore, but I still love checking it out when I'm downstairs with it's staggered 17 inch wheels and classic good looks.
My brother is down in commy dan's hometown and his 23 Ranger Sport is sitting under the house. I'd much rather spend the almost 70k on that thing over these.
Those slope numbers on the dragy are ludicrous. They are both inaccurate (probably) and inconsistent. For example, that -2.10% at 19:12 is nuts. Makes you question it's overall reliability. Does it have a corrected time feature?
Can you test the Lexus IS 350 F Sport.
Surely Australia will bring in the 3L model? Can't believe that a 5 Series will only come with a 2L engine...
Hi Paul, try to ignore the brands and price difference, but how would you compare the i5 to the BYD Seal?
Oh please!!! A BMW vs cheap and Chinese? Prestige, status, quality and BMW solidness? REALLY BRO!
@@danielbredenkamp3957 I'd prefer if someone with actual knowledge and experience to answer the question. If I want an uninformed opinion, I will let you know. In Germany, where the snob factor surrounding German cars is not as big as in other countries, they are already comparing the Seal to an EQE in terms of driveability and finish.
No police spec 3.0 Diesel. What will the police drive. No Stinger Gt, no 5 series BMW....
Probably the X5.
Another White Chrysler un-marked, sticks out like the proverbial!😁
Hwy patrol wankers?
NSW has just rolled out the first few X5's with the turbo petrol.
I'm South African so maybe there's a sensible reason that I'm not aware of but why do police to drive BMWs? And why?
If it's for speed, surely there are cheaper cars that are as fast or faster?
Anyway how many 70s style car chases are there in a relatively low crime country like Australia?
Seems crazy to me especially when citizens are struggling economically.
A better comparision would had been 520i vs 520d.
520d only in certain markets. Not in Australia
Can you plz do the review of Mg Gloster savvy 7 seater 4×4 ??
It just seems like a disappointment.
Thanks for this detailed review. This uglier larger, heavier, and not better performing 5 series is such a disappointment for me. I'm coming of age where the whites have sprout and my wallet is bigger and I am looking for a car that does everything better than my 508 GT. It's such a difficult find nowadays. Maybe the Model S is really the only way up :-/
Best 5 series design ever, the haters will deny this nevertheless it looks absolutely stunning and the rear does not look anything like a Camry
Cope
The fact you're sitting there trying to convince everyone that the rear doesn't look like a Camry, says that it does look like a Camry.
It's bmw camry with slimmer lights
Taxi please!
@@derser541 how does it look like a camery? you saying it looks like a camry just screams bmw hater
what happened to the inline 6, disappointed
The rear looks like a Camry
Be bit of a gambler going for a good run out of town with no spare ....
99.9% of these will never leave the metro area.
Doesn't hum like O'l school supercharged
Are people like Paul everything wrong with the aussie car market today?
Ugly, first time I saw it I just sighed out of disappointment. G30 is a million times better. The future is going to be a pretty boring place the way the industry is going, with everything being battery electric and having god awful design.
Take the bmw steering wheel off and it’s like any other modern luxury car with those big, curvy dash displays. Prefer the more traditional bmw interiors
G30 m550i for me
If there’s not gonna be a 530d version then I’d go for Audi a6 instead
BMW will eventually kill the 5 series here in Australia I imagine just like Tesla with the Model S, I rarely see any G30 5 series’s on the road and with this new 5 series starting at a healthy house deposit BMW will be left with no choice but to axe it from our market because nobody is going to buy it.
They’ll probably axe the 7 as well, I can count on one hand how many current model 7’s I’ve seen.
Doubt we’ll see another A8/S8 from Audi and Mercedes is the only one doing ok with the S class, still not great though.
What a rip off. $40k Corolla and $65k Model 3 is better Accerlation than that two shit boxes. 😅😅😅😅
Far out, the tail looks like a camry, 120k for a 520i? What a joke
Toyotas are an NVH nightmare, like Mazdas. There are aspects of cars that are not easily defined on paper.
I am very glad that this car isn't made intentionally ugly, but it so generic 🙄
BMW did say they know not to mess with the 3 Series and 5 Series that are staples of their line-up, but I am not going to praise them because just because you made a bunch of ugly cars it doesn't make your new generic car beautiful.
But, overall I really like this :) I don't love it like previous 5 Series but I really like it :),
All manufacturers have the writing on the wall. The electrical zealous/climate pontificate's are learning a hard lesson on Democracy- doesn't always swing your way. 😂
The days of elegantly styled BMWs are long gone, that snout and the fussy styling is rather a turn off.
Exterior looks fine. Interior looks SO tacky.
Nsw police licking their lips since the chiron got rejected. They should be in a maybach s class at least.
Oh man but those synthetic engine noises are SO BAD! Least desirable 5 series possibly in history. That’s quite a feat!
Pretty sure these sounds can be disabled. Don't know why anybody would want fake noises for an otherwise quiet drivetrain.
more I see it, Uglier it gets
So now BMW is hiding exhaust pipes like Mercedes 😂!?
The ugliest version of five series BMW I have ever seen
BMW: If you go full elecric I won't shed a tear if you go bankrupt....
FK N20
Electric only good on eastern seaboard
Love your reviews but I still hate the interiors they aren't very luxurious. I don't like the minimalist look, they cheap and nasty. Still look like and EH dash with a stupid screen, love dials ..
BMW are off their head.....seriously!!! Building their cars in USA needs to cease. What rubbish for over hundred thousand!!! The inside of the i5 sounds like a tram. We can tell you're not that impressed Paul.
Must be one of those old wooden trams you're talking about !
Well, it's cheaper to produce them in Spartanburg US than in Germany but they keep the price still insanely high !
Yeah that front door close sounds tinny and thin. Hmmmm
The g60 5 series shows the ignorance of legacy companies. They think they can sell shxts to customers.
Any BMW is a very expensive shit box.
Many elements of these cars do look cheap
BMW, give us the 540i you bozos
If it doesnt have an inline 6 cylinder it shouldnt be able to be a 5 series, BMW are truly taking the piss out of their customers. Absolutely out of hand, and probably because of all this climate target BS. For shame BMW, possibly the least desireable 5 series.... ever. Like a cruise liner powered by a straining outboard motor 🤣
This is amde for the chinese market (like all other new BMWs and Mercs), not for other people, so stop looking at it. So ugly gosh.
This is the least impressive Mercedes... I mean... BMW design I've ever seen.
It's just too plain and bloated
who put those ugly headlines
Both suck.
good review, sad & ugly car.
plastic toy
Has to be one of the most ugliest 5 series ever!
