I have the 2023 BMW 530e AWD PHEV. I really like the car, but the all-electric miles are only about 18. For my type of commute that still works (I’m retired), but if I’m driving any distance, I have to use the hybrid mode. As such, I really glad to hear that the new 5 Series will have a greatly increased all-electric range. When my lease is up I will definitely be trying out both the all electric i5 as well as the PHEV version. Thanks for the review.
It is beyond belief that a car that costs FROM £74,000 does not have auto cruise control, and then alt.reed through the screen. Madness. I think BMW are really out pricing themselves with the current t range of cars. Does it have heated steering wheel? That drip sounded like water landing on a plastic tray. Would drive me mad 😊
I usually enjoy the Carwow reviews a lot, but I was truely dissapointed on this point as well actually. The lack of focus on standard included technological features in 2024. Personally, I don’t understand why this car gets more than an 8. No lane assist, no auto cruise control, no seat memory, a poorly designed glass roof that can’t open… For all these reasons, I just can’t get my head around the fact Matt also only gave the Mercedes EQE a 7. At least they managed to include all of that standard, except for the glass roof. But at least theirs can open. I really struggle to understand
I wonder what happened to all of these new BMW cars and especially their new controversial grills, I don't really think this is hideous as much as I expected and thank goodness that the grill isn't so huge like BMW's usual design where they miss completely. But from my opinion I'm not a big fan of the overall design character from this new BMW 5 Series, I really think the old generation of the BMW 5 Series or any other old BMW car generation in general stands out so much compared to the new generation, nonetheless I do like the interior and the technology of it and regardless excellent review as usual Mat.

They don't know which direction to take with EV grills so their winging it and it shows. Here's an idea, if cooling isn't the first priority, then use aerodynamics as a template instead.
I feel like these new electric bmw, even if they’re the M model, they feel, aesthetically speaking, slower. Idk they look more like a boat than an actual powerful machine and I believe it comes down to the increased ride height…
welcome to bmw options........... no even in second hand you can get a car with the basic options checked..... because some options cost 20k..... a car in the old days....

Yeah but BMW knows how to design a car that is actually desirable and elegant and way better than just acceptable (the one you don't mind). This is clearly meant to please the Chinese first and doesn't have any elegance or timeless elements to it..

14:05 It's only worth upgrading from 11kw to 22kw if you have 3 phase at your property or wherever you intend on doing most of your charging, otherwise not worth it. Because for the majority of people, even with the standard 11kw charging ability, they will only be able to charge at 7kw because most properties only have single phase electricity.
Besides having 3 phase, you also need to have a ton of current capacity. 11kW is 3x16A. 22kW is 3x32A. And then you need to have some left over for your house too. 3x40A is not normal to have at a single family home. More viable in apartment building garages with load balancing.
22 kW AC charging obviously isn't for at-home charging where the standard - in Europe - 11 kW is plenty. It's for the many, many 22kW public charging points almost everywhere that can lower your use of DCFC considerably
I've watched hundreds of Mat's videos. I hope every car sales person watches how he presents a vehicle. I'd buy a car from him in a second. Unless he worked for Vauxhall (GM) of course.
I think this looks pretty good. BMW is going a clever route with offering the same cars as ICE and Electric so they can "easily" switch upon demand. All electric is all nice, but there will be many countries or even continents that will not have any electric charging infrastructure for decades to come. Well done BMW.
I think the car is stunning, except for that slab of black plastic where the grille would usually go. The front is gorgeous if you ignore the black plastic slab of a grille...will undoubtedly be removed with a mid-life revamp
I still think the previous gen looks better but this updated design doesn't look wildly different(unlike the M2) so I might warm up to it, still wishing they kept the previous taillight design though
What would be even cooler, if the game you'd be playing on the display of the i5 would also portray the i5 as a car. Other than that, the car looks incredible, but honestly if I'd go for this, I'd go for the petrol engine one.
Great video Mat, I have to agree about those indicator stalks, speaking as a former 5 Series owner they were always a thing of subtle beauty, never had that cheap sounding twang of poor spring dampening, that’s a bit of a driver focused miss on the part of bmw, which we normally hold with higher standards. I also think it’s a bit too expensive as it’s not riding aloft a bespoke EV platform which ever passenger will see clearly the moment the enter the back seats and encounter that massive transmission tunnel, surely that could have been a removable part in the chassis building process for the EV variants. I agree the outgoing one looks nicer but this one is not that bad, def one of their better looking newer gen cars
Very good-looking car isn't it!
The prestige and the unique design of BMW has gone in this recent cars
The normal non M rear looks like a camry and the M version looks like a camry with the sporty defuser option
Agree.
Except the Camry looks so much better. 😂
I was thinking of an Avalon
If that black placky diffuser was on a Dacia he would of took the piss. I’ve seen better materials on a 1980’s caravan!
As a current user of the G30 5 series, the real improvement I can see that this car has is only the new(er) infotainment system. My worst complaint on my car has always been the bad materials used for the soft touch and glossy plastic interior panels, leading to the panels getting heavily scratched. From the video, I can’t see any improvement in this regard.
I’ll be keeping my G30 then 😅
Asuna Yuuki cant afford to buy BMW 5 Series either due to being overpriced.
Do they crackle and pop in warm weather like my f10 5 series did?
@@asianskywalker Nah, it turns black and got thin over time and finally scratch mark appear. Especially noticable on the interior door handles.
Same. Interiors an upgrade but the exterior is massive downgrade and BMW stopped offering all of the high end options on the 5 that even my 2018 has. Can’t even get soft close doors, true angel eye headlights, etc
We need the real 5 series review Mat not the electric version. Please make it happen thanks

The rear seats "have no under thigh support and have a panel that dig's into your lower back. But other than that are quite comfortable" great review Mat, I heard that are rubbish but I don't want to upset BMW 😂😂😂
I have always loved the 5 series, and this one will no doubt still be excellent. But it's a shame they've made it look like a Skoda Superb at the front...
I like the Superb!
Or even a higher end Skoda lol
Hey, don't disgrace the Superb like this.
Dunno but after seeing the 7 series, this feels better compared to it. The gray or matte color schemes help it alot. The base trims look bad but the M versions are all good. Just need time to grow upon you
I have the 2023 BMW 530e AWD PHEV.
Just curious how much does it cost to lease a 5 series in your country?
It is beyond belief that a car that costs FROM £74,000 does not have auto cruise control, and then alt.reed through the screen. Madness. I think BMW are really out pricing themselves with the current t range of cars. Does it have heated steering wheel? That drip sounded like water landing on a plastic tray. Would drive me mad 😊
When was it ever the case that moving up to a more luxurious car brand gave you more features?
The BMW 5 Series apparently as bad as even Aston Martin V8 Vantage...😅
What I find rather funny, if you look up those "old" BMW reviews on UA-cam 2012-2017. People always kept complaining how old-fashioned unadventurous BMWs look in the comment section. Now it's the other way around, yet the selling numbers go up.
They don't know which direction to take with EV grills so their winging it and it shows. Here's an idea, if cooling isn't the first priority, then use aerodynamics as a template instead.
He’s in Portugal, what a honor (I’m Portuguese)
I feel like these new electric bmw, even if they’re the M model, they feel, aesthetically speaking, slower. Idk they look more like a boat than an actual powerful machine and I believe it comes down to the increased ride height…
Yeah I also have to get used to BMW designs nowadays, but in the 90s that didn't use to be the case for me...
I was looking at the new 5 series, but the heated steering wheel is 5000 pounds. That is insane.
welcome to bmw options........... no even in second hand you can get a car with the basic options checked..... because some options cost 20k..... a car in the old days....
Free on Nissan Leaf!
5 Series always the best looking bmws.
I'm curious to see the wagon of this 5 series, the back design might looks better with that rearlight on wagon than on sedan
The BMW 5 Wagon Series could be far better.
I loved the previous 5 but this new 5 looks definitely better than the EQE : some days I like EQE but sometimes only 😅
That front grill seems like an afterthought with that square sitting out for the sensors, you'd think they could hide it better like every other car company has
Drinking the best beer and driving the best car!
Saw one a few days ago at a showcase in Rome airport, looked much better than I expected. Pulled a lot of attention from by passers.
Thats a strange feature I've observed, BMWs look better in life than pics. Even 7-series looks good.

@@YTOnlineReviews Yes so 🤷🏻♂️
I actually don’t mind the design. That said Im Very impressed by the interiors! If it’s actually comfortable, it’ll be a brilliant city potter.
Yeah but BMW knows how to design a car that is actually desirable and elegant and way better than just acceptable (the one you don't mind). This is clearly meant to please the Chinese first and doesn't have any elegance or timeless elements to it..
@@MyRealNamewell sadly is.

It's for the many, many 22kW public charging points almost everywhere that can lower your use of DCFC considerably
legendary design... bold, muscled and stylish... 10
I've watched hundreds of Mat's videos. I hope every car sales person watches how he presents a vehicle. I'd buy a car from him in a second. Unless he worked for Vauxhall (GM) of course.
What's wrong with Vauxhalls 😂
At 10:58 the car is leaking liquid from below. 10 seconds after Mat talks us about the weird noise!
Water from the A/C system. Happens on all cars.
Looks awesome and very premium inside - I like !
Mat still the all time BMW lover!!
My 2015 A6 has a separate temp.controll for the footwell.
Not to mention, a dedicated button for adjusting the acc, which is the right way to do it.
🤔🤔🤔
10:38 - 10:59
Water dripping sound. Leaking water underneath the car just look. You got a swimming pool there!! 😂
Shout out injured Yianni
That dripping sound was the deal breaker for me 😂
Major dealbreaker in fact.
Nah, BMW is rather quick in updating and fixing their cars' faults. Let's see if they fix it by the time new 5-series reaches customers.
Combustion engine: Hey, mate gonna take you 1000 miles with like 5 min stops for gas.
Electric engine: "Ok, mate, planned the whole route for us, we ginna drive 1000 miles with 5 hours wait for charging"
The base price in for an i5 M60 in Sweden is more or less the same as a Model S Plaid. Even though the Plaid is built like a plastic cup in comparison I would get that. The pricing on the M60 is ridiculous here(straight currencty converion to GBP gives a price of 94k GBP) and I guess it mainly has to do with totally messed up swedish currency.
I like the previous model more looks wise but this on is ok. I give it a strong 7
Price of this in my country is 400 k GBP 😢
@@JohnAndJaneDoe65 that is crazy! Where is that?

2,3 Tonns? :O I always used to drive 5ers, the old ones. My e28 was about 1.2 Tonns, the e34's about 1.5. My e39 Touring with about 1.8 a heavy brother. They all are perfectly fine daily drivers.
I don't get it.
You're comparing cars that are upwards of 20/30 years old to a brand new car, which also has added weight from all the batteries and stuff.
Safety standards and they are larger. F10 520i weight is 1600kg and length is 4899mm, while e28 5 series is 1200kg as you said but only 4620mm long. That's 4mm shorter than the F30 3-series
safety and electrical computees add weight. what dont you get
It was a rethorical "I don't get it" - I do know why the new plastic bombers are heavier, thanks. I'm an industrial designer, i.o. designing cars.
I just wanted to make clear that the weight increase is ridiculous and focus on; that all these older cars are perfectly fine daily drivers.

(The RS6 Avant is better though because it’s the only wagon I can get in the states)

the Germans will design electric motors to break down
Hey Mat, after seeing the NYC floods can you do an EV test to see what happens when an EV gets flooded, either by driving through deep water or just gets flooded while standing still?
I doubt they're going to purposely destroy cars 💀
@@ALI.x Fair enough, but until a few days ago I honestly haven't thought of that and you never see any reviewer talk about it. And it's a huge deal. Accidents too. Another thing I haven't considered, but apparently on even the smallest accident you have to pay to get the battery pack integrity checked otherwise there could be mechanical consequences or even legal as your insurance might be void. This can be a deal breaker for a lot of people, but all reviewers seem to talk about is 0-60 and the infotainment system.
