      Also, isn't gravity an all-or-nothing thing? I recall some weird quirks of how gravity in D&D canonically works, probably from Spelljammer.
      No matter how high you go, gravity will always be the same, up until you leave the gravity field, at which point gravity will go from 1 to 0 instantly.
      Although that brings into question Wildemounte and graviturgy. I'm not familiar with Wildemounte and haven't read the book much, but since it's a setting by Matt Mercer, does that make it non-canonical?

    Sorry to wreck this so shortly after you posted but here goes.
    The boots of levitation means you can cast levitate at will. Levitate has a weight limit of 500 pounds. So theoretically you would weigh heavier than 500 pounds depending on gravity and the various items that you carry
    You would have to weigh in your own 0.00000000005 pounds without any other items.
    Even if you were weightless, the items you are wearing would probably crush you,I don't know if levitate affects those as well

    • @Ditidos
      @Ditidos 3 роки тому +8

      Mmmmmh, I also had a similar problem with the levitation effect since it seems questionable. Although if it is a reverse gravity effect one could go nuts and build an FTL drive and just time travel into the past that way. Or just by accelerating to relativistic speeds, is there a way to do that?

  • @Ditidos
    @Ditidos 3 роки тому +20

    Well, you could use a black hole. After all, gravity works from a distance so as long as you don't go into the event horizon you should be fine (and it will allow you to travel way faster to the future so even earlier times are possible). That said, I'm not sure if levitation does shield you against the crushing effects of gravity, specially in boot form. If I was a GM and you tried to use that argument I would only protect the feet from the effect. There's is also spaghettification (yes, that's an actual term) which could be a potential problem but I would give it away from this. Accelerating to relativistic speeds may be an easier way to do this, since acceleration and gravity seem to be identicall.
    An alternate method is to use a reverse gravity spell (if there is one) to build a warp drive and just go around in a FTL spaceship since travelling faster than light and traveling to the past are mathematical synonims. This way you would just need to accelerate to FTL speeds, run in circles and go back to either relativistic or regular speeds.

    • @martinsmouter9321
      @martinsmouter9321 3 роки тому +2

      I mostly agree, but have ways around your problem.
      Spagethification is obviously a force effect and can thus be stopped with "force ward". This spell has the disadvantage of being only 1mins/level. Long and sixth level thus recquiring "presistent spell" feat or a lot of spell slots.
      You're standing on a star and thus receiving radiant and fire damage.
      This can be counteracted with an armor of invulnerability and eevirly chain
      There is a spell literally named "reverse gravity" that reverse gravity so your solution kinda works, but why wouldn't it not only send only it's internals back in time meaning that everybody inside it gets sent back up in time, while everything else continuous effectively bringing you to a younger state in a future setting.
      It would be consistent with the measurements of the irs where speeding up only made the clocks there slower.

    Interestingly enough, WoTC actually did provide a way to travel back to a certain period of time. (WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD FOR A CERTAIN MODULE IN D&D! IF YOU ARE PLAYING THROUGH ANY MODULES RIGHT NOW PLEASE DO NOT CONTINUE PAST THIS POINT)
    In the new module Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frost Maidien, you can explore an ancient Netherese City(the Netherese were a magical empire with floating cities that crashed) you can find a strange obelisk. A Brain in a Jar controlling a Helm Horror tells you to use a staff of power to activate which when done, removes 10 years off of everyone in the blast radius and brings the entire party back to when the city was floating and the empire was flourishing.

    • @SebasTian58323

      @@missingtexturezhonestly, I'd say that you're sent to a limbo of time where things that shouldn't exist anymore or yet due to things like that exist and are either stuck there until enough time passes that you exist again, or you escape using a spell like planeshift, using two bags of holdings to open a portal to the astral plane-at which point you are immediately sucked into it and then put right back where you were before the de-aging occurred. I don't know if I explained it correctly, but I think it sounds like a cool concept. You could see stuff there like a supercomputer from Earth, an extinct animal from your setting that was found alive millions of years later in a place it had no business being... And you could gain forbidden knowledge literally lost to time because someone de-aged the spell tome out of existence.
      Or even sent completely out of reality where you can observe time and space from the outside and learn things from all points in time at once....

    I loved this concept! I had no clue where you were going with this right up until the end. A small note though... I don't think the levitation boots would keep you from pancaking. You'd still be experiencing the gravitational pull from the star to the same extreme the boots just put your landing zone in the air rather than on the surface. Also if you cancel out the gravitational force of the object it basically negates your time travel effect (I've been studying for 5 years in this field trust me here). I think you'd need to find a route where you can withstand the force of the gravity for it to work.
    But anyway that's all nitpicky shit that doesn't really matter because it's D&D! I love the creativity here dude, keep up the good work!

      A neutron star is so dense it's pretty much one giant atom comprised of a bunch of neutrons squished together. (where did the electrons and protons go? basically they turn into neutrons when squished too tightly). You could probably stand on it if it weren't for the crushing effects of gravity. Gravity being my main concern for this whole plan. The forces of gravity don't just shut off a few metres above the surface of the neutron star. The forces these magical boots would need to exert on your feet to keep you from smashing into the neutron star at mach infinite would be so high it would smush you just as hard as the surface of the star itself would.

As a DM I would rule that the Boots only give you the necessary force to remain a few feet off the ground but would do nothing to protect the rest of your body from the effects of the gravity. Which would lead to... 2) It's an implosion not an explosion due to the immense forces of gravity. The difference being that an explosion is an outward force, and implosion being an inward force.

    Nice Idea. Minor Correction:
    Gravitiy is a continous force. It works even when not standing on the surface of the planet, weakening by distance from the object. So floating above the planet would still result in routhly the same g-force. That means if the levitating boots actually account for the greater force on the neutron star, you would be squashed between the gravitation and the counter froce of the boots, become a floating pancake.

  • @robertshort9487
    @robertshort9487 3 роки тому

    You would experience the exact same force of gravity floating above the star as on it.
    Astronauts feel the exact same pull of gravity as we do. (Technically a few % less given distance.)
    And it's why you would "weigh" slightly less at noon than if you measure at 6.

  • @ipoint01
    @ipoint01 3 роки тому

    Boots of levitation wouldn't stop from being crushed. Since every force has an equal and opposite force, the gravitational field would push down on you while at the same time the boots will push up on you with an equal force. Thus you wouldn't be touching the ground/star, but the boots would effectively act as the new ground and you would be crushed into them.

    Like the spirit of the video, bu- *objection!*
    1. What's your understanding that levitation allows you to counter gravity? It was a bit handwavy for my taste especially since I don't think gravity would work that way. My Logic: the spell simply supplies the force to float, but it doesn't nullify gravity. Otherwise people would die on earth when they used it unless there was another clause.
    2. What forces the DM to interpret "make me traveling to the neutron star never happen" in that way? As a DM I'd simply set the timeline back to when you're about to use teleport or ask you how you used your days on earth between your teleports.
