Two words: oil flask. When poured on the ground and ignited, it does a flat 5 damage to any creature in the area, no rolls required. You now have a way to deal damage and, potentially, clear the adventure with an entire party not using their math rocks

3.5 had a version of the Mailman sorcerer designed to avoid rolling under all possible circumstances. After all, the Mailman was so named for its commitment to consistency and reliability (and also for its ability to *deliver* impressive amounts of damage), and trading a bit of that damage for perfect consistency is all to the good. This also meant avoiding effects that allowed the possibility of a save; no save just die spells existed in that edition and were highly prized. There were other things like having a Dire Tortoise to guarantee a surprise round every encounter and abilities to always allow taking 10 on skill checks as well.
Yes. Just buy a heck ton of fortune cookies and open one every time you would normally roll and have the DM interpret the outcome based on the fortune. For instance: DM: “Roll for Initiative” PC: “The fortune says ‘A beautiful, smart, and loving person will come into your life.’” DM: “You see a beautiful woman across the tavern anticipating the bar fight. You are distracted. You go last.”
Play a bard. Spend your action with Dodge or Help, bonus action bardic inspiration. Occasionally cast a buff spell or two. Use Point Buy instead of rolling stats. Chose to take last place in initiative. Get a feat or item that grants immunity to stuff like poison or grappled conditions. Boom, no dice character.
Before i knew about dnd my friend came up with a game that is pretty much just the role play aspect of dnd. You wanted to attack something? If it sounded cool or it seems like it would work you did it.
Or: For initiative, you can go around the table (DM + Another Player rolls, whoever is higher goes first.) In the case you want to deal damage, via saving throw fail, you can actually take average damage. Such as for fireball you can do 28 fire damage. In addition, there are auto hit spells such as magic missile, which you just take an average of 3 force damage per bolt (1d4+1)a You can also take the Yuan-Ti pureblood race since it does have immunity to poison and disease. Just some of my current thoughts that could also work! Never really thought about a no dice and game, thanks Blaine!!
If you need offensive actions, use your actions to spread and light oil. So long as you don't throw it, no roll is involved and the fire does a flat 5 damage to creatures standing in it.
There are rp ways to do combat were the dm decides outcomes based on rp, the fact your letting your team do combat for you means dice are rolled at the table wich defeats the purpose.
So this wasn't official DND but durring basic training some of my Wingmen and I played a version the DM created that didn't use dice at all he used lots of math and random numbers from the rest of the flight it was surprisingly functional and definitely helped with the stress of everything!
i remember when me and my friends were getting into dnd but all the info we had was make an oc, have a person to make a story and dice will tell the outcome of your actions but since we didnt have dice all we did was cut up pieces of paper with numbers 1 to 20 and we would pick a paper at random
If you need to do damage, heal, and get across terrain it’s very simple be a tabaxi paladin warlock. The paladin can heal with no rocks using lay on hands the tabaxi can do all sorts of moving and grooving crap and the warlock just needs to attack when the enemy is unconscious or has an auto hit situation (depending on your dm these come in many forms) the warlocks spells will always hit at full power so no need to roll damage and initiative is taken out if it’s a sneak attack round
My first D&D was the Basic boxed set. It came with a laminated sheet of numbers you had to cut up and put in cups or margarine tubs to "draw" your random number. No math rocks included. I didn't even HAVE math rocks for my first half year (except for d6's raided from board games and Yahtzee) - On initiative, you can choose to go last.
If you did have to roll a d20 for initiative, then technically you would be playing D&D without rolling DICE. You would just be rolling a singular DIE, therefore “beating” the game without rolling multiple dice…
At level 3, Sorcerers will have Web, Shield and Silvery Barbs, and can also help in RP with Minor Illusion, Prestidigitation, Mage Hand, etc. Can also combine Web with Heightened Spell once per long rest to give everyone disadvantage
I don't believe that works, as the life cleric's ability says "when you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature" and good berry does not heal, it creates fruits that heal when eaten, so you are not using a spell to heal, so the bonus does not apply.
@@phelps6205 this has been specifically pointed out and mentioned officially to be the Intended reason why Goodberry appears on the Life Cleric Domain Spell list. It is indeed a thing, but while they did this they did say Goodberries cant be eaten if you are unconscious.
An interesting bit of trivia. Of the standard dice used in D&D, all are(or at least can be, depending on who made the molds) Pythagorean solids except the d10.
By level 3 go artificer, alchemist. You're a plague curing inventor, use a bag of holding and any bits of metal you find as an archaic flak cannon, use your 2nd infusion on something to help either trap check or cross pits, probably trapcheck, because going Tabaxi is a fun one. You could also give an ally a simple +1 to an item. Now you can attack without a roll (bag of holding debris shotgun is a dex save) and unplague your party, as well as be all the utility they'll ever need with mage hand, 3 infusions to swap out (assuming bag of holding is permanent), ritual casting, mending, and tool proficiencies
I did this challenge in Baldur's Gate 3 using loads of glitches, avoiding all combat and dropping stuff on enemies. You can use Destructive Wrath and drop a haste potion to give lethargic, then cast lightning bolt (which you can buy as a scroll) to kill enemies and get XP. Unfortunately, on the Nautiloid you have to roll 2 dice since the Mind Flayer auto rolls initiative with you when interacting with the transponder.
Some of the most creative problem solving I've ever seen in dnd has resolved conflicts without touching a set of dice. On one occasion, my friend and I bought a band of bugbear mercenaries right out from under their Drow employers on the assurance of better pay and more equitable working conditions; all they had to do was help us oust their abusive bosses. Bad day for the Drow, and problem solved with sense so common that it didn't even require any charisma checks.
Play a caster, and only cast spells with a save DC. That way the enemies are the ones rolling dice. You can also voluntarily fail saves to avoid rolling.
I think this is a equally a neat character concept, less the not rolling but more the types of actions. I’d make them a pacifist redemption paladin to lean into the protection and support rather than outright attacking
Clerics of the life domain heal more, so you would get bonuses to your healing spells such as lay on hands or goodberry. Although those aren't on the cleric spell list, you can take the magic initiate feat to get them. You could also just make someone else roll for you if that counts.
We used to use playing cards instead of dice because it kept the flow of the action. Three things: *1.* The player got a new set of cards each day based on their level and got to keep certain cards that they had won as rewards for excellent roleplaying. *2.* When dice were normally involved the DM would draw a card and determine the result (A = crit , etc. ) If damage needed to be random (2d4+1) and a 7 of clubs were draw, then that would equal a 2 whereas a court card would equal a 4 and so on. A table of card draws and die results could be used or the DM could wing it. *3.* The player's cards came in when they wanted to overrule the DM's draw, maybe to make a monster miss or to make a spell hit or affect the damage total or give success to a save or whatever. Since they have a limited number of cards each day, they had to choose carefully. The players still decided all their actions, but the randomized element was modified to speed up the game a bit. It worked well for those sessions and really improved combat, like *_a lot!_* However, not every table likes it and some people really just want to roll some f-ing dice, as one player said, " No dice, _no dice._ "
i was half expecting a high level gnome wizard taking utility spells (mold earth, shape water, & freedom of movement); or even abusing spells that make others roll dice instead (armor of agathys, wall of stone, & dominate monster). Still a fun thought experiment!
Mastermind Rogue, just be very helpful from 30 ft as a bonus action and dodge as your action, alternatively do double help, granted your normal help action needs to be done within 5ft, so sticking to dodge is probably better for at least the 2nd and third encounter. Paladin was a good pick though.
