As a locksmith in a large school district (9 schools ) 22 buildings overall , I'm constantly getting called to emergency's almost daily and when I arrive the administrator wants to know why I don't have a tool bag . I ask them to show me the problem and 95% of the time I can fix it with my routine EDC . Having a well rounded selection of tools and 40+ years of experience eliminates the need for extra props .

IMHO, this is your best video ever, instead of being about snobbing, and who has what it is about learning, and finding ways to have tools to solve problems in all aspects of our lives. I personally would love to hear about what the wild west or mountain man edc was like, (fan of old western stories). Thank you.

You should look into Backwoods magazine, and bushcraft channels if that’s the type of content you’re looking for. This channel has always been more of a “look at this cool guy gear” EDC type channel, most people IMO in the EDC world today have the gear because EDC is cool these days. To be honest a TON of all this cool guy EDC is pointless for the very people carrying them, and they only carry them for cool guy points. A wallet, knife, and house keys are enough EDC for the vast majority of the population, even in “the EDC world”.

Thanks Taylor, this is one of the best videos you've made in a while! I'm kinda surprised you weren't more familiar with bushcraft. I don't really think the topic is very far removed (although I'm never much of a fan of pocket jewelry). It'd be cool to see you apply this concept to some other similarly related topics, ultralight backpacking and disaster prepping come to mind right off the bat as good places to start.

Something me and the wife have noticed over the years that we have been watching your channel; Almost no one carries any cordage. We both carry about 10 feet of kite string and a couple of feet of something else like 1/4 inch or smaller nylon cord. It"s sort of like when folks are given a pocket knife for the first time as an adult. Their first response is almost always "Thank you but I will probably never use it. I never need one now." And a week or so later they come back with "Wow! Thank you so much! I never realized how much I needed a pocket knife." The didn't realize it because they didn't have the option. Cordage doesn't come up nearly that often but when it does it"s super helpful and weighs almost nothing while taking up minimal space. The other one for me, is large paper clips which I rarely use as paper clips. Just that little bit of wire goes a very long way for all kinds of stuff. Hope this has been helpful and keep on doin' the damn thing.

I carry a LOT of cordage. But I have a farm, so my edc cordage has a high turn over rate.
I could survive off just my knowledge, but I'll always carry a good knife, lighter, and paracord, because I would hate to have to rely on a stone knife, friction fire, and natural fiber rope.

I love the outdoors, and I love EDC. One thing that I think transcends "tribes" is that the goal is to be prepared. EDC is used, IMHO, in a more "urban" or "emergency" type idea, but in the bushcraft sense what you carry really can be the difference between spending the night hypothermic, or spending the night comfortable.
For me, carry items have to meet three criteria:
    - Is it genuinely useful?
    - Is it situationally appropriate?
    - Do I love it?
As a result I find I have an absolute minimum EDC that works for everyday and a more serious pack plus gear for adventures. The end result is the same though - am I prepared for what I think I might get into - whether that's in a coffee shop or half way up a mountain.
Some videos worth a watch are the Esee ones - Patrick has some great insights - and the Hill People Gear "longhouse" series.

This. I LOVED this video. I'm a practicing wilderness instructor, and this was my entire entry into EDC. This was my express reasoning for pushing the LighterBro Bic sleeve, it has a few useful urban tools, a blade, and the most reliable way of starting a fire - a lighter. I've found a lighter is a useful tool in urban settings too lol.
However, a wilderness-focused lighter sleeve would be incredible, and I'd buy it immediately.

I have completed my EDC setup so now my focus is on learning some of the skills to make the tools I carry useful. Example: first aid kit. I have one in each of my bags but I've very little knowledge (rule 5) on how to use them. That is where my EDC journey is going from here.

    • @Greg-zr4wm
      @Greg-zr4wm 2 роки тому

For first aid applications just from my experience.
I suggest if you can find locally something like an outdoors first aid / survival course, or a course that utilizes a trauma kit.
I've taken regular first aid courses and they teach basics but nothing special.
When you take a survival course or a course that utilizes a trauma kit, they teach you more skills and which products are nicer to use. Ie will not stick to the wound.
In a lot of situations you'll find you don't have exactly the right supplies. You need to be able to improvise.
As an example Something I carry in my edc mini trauma kit is a small tie down strap.
Yes ideally never move an injured person. But if in an active situation could be a fire or even a live shooting. You may need to move someone that has been injured,to a safer location. You can loop the strap around their upper body close to their arm pits then back to yourself. Now you can drag them if you are unable to carry them or just have to keep low.
As well in a worse case situation where I have already used my tourniquet. I can improvise another with my strap, or just use it to keep pressure on a wound to free up my hands.
For a little background I commute by bicycle most of the time around the city and was a first responder up until I went off on disability. As well I use to spend every minute I could in the mountains.

I agree, I think the EDC online world has become more about Instagramable cool photos and UA-cam content vs usefulness. Everyone with matching color everything or themes or the newest EDC Widget which is great and fun as a hobby don't get me wrong. But a friend keeps telling me you need the Knipex pliers for your kit and you need this and that and I'm like no I don't!! As much as I want them, I haven't touched the pliers I have in my kit to date so why would I add more things just that are cool so I have also been rethinking my EDC and VEDC kits as well.

Great video !!! Ranger bands....been using them for years. Here's a couple of tips..... Don't buy the "ready made" versions. If you cut them from bicycle tubes, you can have them any width (strength) that you want. Go to your local professional bicycle shop, be polite, and explain what you are looking for (and why)....bad bicycle tubes. Bike shops don't patch tubes....they replace them. And they probably have the punctured tubes (all different size, i.e. diameters) in a box, or in the trash can; that they will probably give you, for free. Final tip.....these ranger bands make great fire starters. They burn hot, and for a longer time, than you might think.

I wear a suit & tie to work so don't carry a bag with me much. I was gifted a medical quality penlight at a trade show, at the same show I won a sharpie sized battery bank with a 1200 mAh power bank & tiniest screwdriver kit I have seen like a pen. Together a suit pocket pen & a pen in my shirt pocket I added a Swiss Army Hiker for ease. I have my wallet of course + mobile phone. I can attend meetings & top up my phone battery when I am away from my desk & today topped up the battery of a potential client's phone as we enjoyed lunch out in the sunshine - naturally he signed LOL.

Bushcraft community does tend push high carbon steel blades. Easy to sharpen in the field and can use with a hard rock to generate sparks, And many like scandi grind for easy of sharpening. Still use bicycle inner tubes for ranger bands. Suggest using inner tubes for mountain bike tires. Seem to be the right size.

The longer your in the less things they carry outside of the minimums, as they have found alternate uses for the equipment already on them. Instead of carrying 50 extra pounds of things there most likely never going to use.

Excellent video! I use a Ranger Band in my everyday carry and have for years. Two items I carry on my EDC pocket key ring are a Swiss Tech Micro Multi Tool and a P-38 can opener. When I began carrying them I had two problems. The Micro Multi Tool would unfold in my pocket and create a sort of mechanical porcupine in my pocket that was uncomfortable with stabs to my leg and to my hand when I reached into the pocket. The sharp, pointy hook hinged to the body of the P-38 would unfold in my pocket and stab my leg as I walked. Solution was to place the P-38 next to the Micro Multi Tool and secure them together with a Ranger Band. Problem solved. Neither one of them can unfold and stab me.

  • @bangalorebobbel
    @bangalorebobbel 2 роки тому

    Interesting points.
When you spoke about ranger bands and then about your dad improvising anything with what was available at home I remembered suddenly the old saying 'if your tool is a hammer everything looks like a nail'. This is usually meant ironically-negative in a sense that people tend to stay in their box of thinking depending on their tools and try something stupid like trying to hitting a screw in like they would do with a nail or so, or that people unneccessarily use tools simply because they own them or have them at hand. But I took that saying always positive in a sense that exploring the possibilities of a tool increase always your skills and your options of getting things done - with whatever tools you have at your hands. So exploring new tools and methods is always a good thing. And yes it is sometimes stupid but often it works, even putting a screw in with a hammer ;-)
That is maybe also kind of the core of bushcrafting - you have a very basic set of tools and can do basically everything you want by using natural resources, and mainly your skills. That is very satisfying and helps you to survive in the outdoors. And if you want to learn more about that mind set and the smartest ever use of pocket knives I can highly recommend to watch also the channel of Felix Immler - he can do and fabricate everything based on using a Victorinox.
And yes, absolutely true - for sure everybody has or has had any kind of EDC, since mankind started. Depending on actual and local needs and traditions, this might be a simple stick (used for digging, hunting, walking etc.) and some fire making device or said MacGyver/Felix Immler Swiss Army knife. Or a lipstick, wet wipes and bandaids. Or a billhook. Whatever it is - we usually carry any stuff with us, nobody goes naked and without anything what he or she thinks might be useful during the day.
And to come to an end now: during my childhood it was not only usual but even kind of obligatory for boys to always carry four things: a handkerchief, a piece of cordage, matches and a pocket knife. We never carried these things in a bulky set or pouch but just open in our pockets. What was for sure a much better solution than having a pouch or metal container which you cannot simply put in a kid's pockets. And we didn't have youtube or went to any courses but were teached by our granddads how to use a knife or how to tie knots. Good old times ;-)

Great reflection on the overlaps between interests. Never heard the phrase "spec whore" before but will definitely hold on to that! On blade steels especially, I try to remember that even the most cheese-grade stainless is leagues ahead of the found metal shards, pointy rocks and teeth our ancestors used for most of our history (and they did just fine).

I got into EDC when I was pre-teens. Rode my bicycle everywhere, and I also worked on my grandmother's farm. I learned to carry everything that you might need, because walking half an hour from the feilds to the house to grab an item, then turn around and walk back truly sucked. My car kits, my motorcycle kits, and even rural and urban kits are geared towards anything that I have used or I have wished I had. Not even that many items, but the items that I actually use.

The saying that resonated with me the most when I started to be into knives and tools (wow, about 12 years at this point) is "knife is humanity's most basic tool". the fact that we can still refine and reinvent any and all aspects of it is just amazingly fascinating.

As I was watching this I looked over on my side table and saw my Vietnam war issued Camillus army pocket knife. I have had this knife for many many years and it has been used more than any other. It stays sharp and has never rusted. Crazy what we pay for knifes now. I also carry my dad's old timer trapper from the 60's. Great video and insights.

It DOES require thought, as to what is essential in EDC. What's your operating area? Urban? Suburban? Rural? Are you likely to go from one to another? What weather are you dealing with? (Clothing is EDC, outside of a nudist colony!) Whats your skillset? Can you improvise, or need a special tool? Fire kit, to cook, heat water or keep warm? It could apply even in an urban SHTF problem. The subject never ends....

Some 35 yrs ago good friend told the story of another friend’s experience. US-Night time commercial aircraft slid off runway into swamp/river. Lights in plane go out, maybe ? the little floor lights worked. Darker than sh*t inside and out and people panic working to get out. Can’t see a thing. Is the plane going to sink? Get me out of here. -My friend took me to a store and bought me a small keychain AAA flashlight and said “carry this everywhere, all the time” I have ever since. 9/11 brought other things home, again the flashlight to help get down those many flights of black stairwells. For women and men, shoes to walk long distances home. Some form of simple rain gear (9/11 was not rainy thankfully). A mask, COVID, dust. Change, small bills, ATM or CC may not work. Any kind of SAK Or multi tool with a ferro rod or FireFly stuck somewhere. All this can fit in a Fanny pack but I’d have the flashlight and knife on my person always (the power could go out while you’re in the bathroom). A backpack maybe too large if you need to get down those crowded stairs. 9/11 taught us grab and go.

I actually know several young people that carry NOTHING except their phone (male and female). I have asked them "what about money or a credit card?" and they said, "I have google wallet", I said what about a driver's license or medical ins. card or Costco card, and they said, "I have a picture of that stuff on my phone".
Then I asked what about a knife? And they said, "I don't know how to use a knife and it scares me to carry one" (or some variation of that) ... if they had to survive out of sight of a Starbucks or Trader Joes, they would die.
    It boggles my f-in' mind.

Interesting video! I view one’s EDC as constant learning. My EDC is pretty settled as to minimums, yet slowly & constantly evolves as I try other things and compare. The knives and fire source(s) I carry today are not the matches or lighter & pocketknife I carried 50 years ago, much less the match safe and knife my grandfather carried 100 years ago. But some needs are constant. One is ALWAYS learning.👍

Have your small fixed blade at the ready all the time. Only pull the sheath out of your pocket to access your other EDC gear. Great vid. Very enlightening .

I've been hearing about cougar sightings in the PNW where I live so I started carrying pepper spray. Also might help me if someone's dog attacks me while landscaping for work...and I live in Portland so yeah. I'm an artsy person so I just bought a little kiridashi style knife for whittling, sculpting stuff, and doing precise cuts like you might do with an exacto. I'd like to have something while i'm hanging out in forests to sculp some clay or wood or even a mushroom or something. I'm putting together a really cool lanyard to make it extra special and personalized. I also customized my hori hori I use for weeding gardens, cutting branches, etc. I wasn't trying to have Japanese stuff but they're just practical and versatile. I also find myself attracted to the higonokami pocket knives. Japanese design is practical and has a minimal elegance a lot of the time. I don't like what I tend to call "sporty design" that looks like sports gear or something with all the ugly curves going everywhere and the bright and tacky color combinations.

Blade Steel; even with A2, D2, 1095, I've had no reason to sharpen my blade on 3-4 day trips. Just as some are in love with the idea of a super-steel, there are many who are in love with needlessly sharpening their blades in field. Most of the time, it's unnecessary. I'll stick with 3V, save the weight of a sharpening stone, and simply sharpen at home.

Great video. A lot of times a small knife is better than a huge knife if you need to do small, precise stuff. When i hunt, ive got a small knife ill use for most things and a HUGE knife i'll use for specifically one thing. the right tool for the job.
I think over a certain level, steel is steel. It needs to be a usable steel, but it doesnt need to be the best steel money can buy. Those expensive knives are cool and that steel could perform if put to the test, but few of us are batoning our pocket knife to split wood. The first edc knife i ever bought when i was 16 has worked great. I rarely need to sharpen it, and when i do, it takes a great edge quickly without getting a $500 sharpening kit out. Just standard 18CrMoV.
I was thinking of getting a "ranger band" type of setup to keep a flashlight around my multitool. I rarely need one without the other but hate having them separately bounce/roll around in my pocket. I know you do those little pocket organizer sheaths, but i need something that will fit multiple types of pant pocket or a coat pocket etc.

Okay genuine question cause I’m on the fence about the griffin adventure tool. I’ve been looking at it for a while but when I stumbled upon you some time ago and you turned me onto the tpt slide…..it’s changed my life. I carry it everywhere, even on the plane and traveling. Boom in a new place and I didn’t wanna travel with check luggage and I’ve got a basic knife with me after a quick trip the the hardware store. All this is to say I love my slide so much and I’ll never not have it on me. I cannot seem to justify adding the griffin adventure too my keys if I have the tpt slide and bit on my person 24/7
    Thoughts please
And Taylor if you see this. You the man and I’d love your thoughts too.

Once I learned that "Ranger Bands" were inner tubes, I ran downstairs and grabbed one off a flat bicycle tire, and immediately tried to imagine how to use it. Out of several ideas, the most effective one is to keep closed a small set of snips that have a default spring open, with No close lock, that allowed the tips to repeatedly stab me as I stuck my hand in the tool bag. It didn't matter how I put them in the bag, they always found a way to stab or cut the tip of a finger. Now that the band keeps them closed, I never noticed them again

Exotic blade steel preferences seem to have the shelf life of a banana. ;P
I am definitely come from the bushcraft side of the house here. I make knives and leather working tools from 1080 and other simple carbon steels - cheap, readily available, easy to work, easy to heat treat, and they get the job done. It makes it really easy and cheap (in materials) to experiment with handle ergonomics, blade geometry, etc. If I see a knife shape I want to try, I can knock up a prototype in a weekend and experiment. Simple carbon steels are easy to strop back to a good working edge with a leather belt - and it works better if you have a small dedicated strop & some compound.

The knife size is mostly a matter of technique and context. Most of our ancestors have used a knife (rock, cold worked copper, bronze, iron, steel) about the size of a finger and they did everything with it, including dressing large animals.
A small knife is better than no knife, a large knife is better than no knife. But a small knife isn't better than a large knife and vice versa. Just carry a damn knife like a normal human being (most humans through history have carried some kind of knife), small or large according to preference and goals. Most of the time I carry a small pocket knife or a multitool, sometimes only the Leatherman Squirt and that's usually enough.

Lesson I have learned about Ranger bands. For me, I never cut a band more narrow than the width of my thumb. ( _I know . . . rule-of-thumb_ ). When I cut bands smaller than that, they break inside of a year. I have 1 inch wide bands I've used for five years now that have not broken yet.

Rangerbands are great and cheap. I use them on gear all the time. My watchband is a leatherman tread and smaller ones fit on it perfectly and hold bits in while covering the hex holes, keeping dirt out. They are decent firestarters too (yup, they burn...its not Trioxane, but it is better than nothing)...if you add a little handsanitizer to get them going they can burn for several mins in pretty iffy conditions.
Great video. It is always a cool feeling to break through to another level in your passion.
