I cant believe ive watched many videos about canning and not one showed the seal part which is what i was looking for thank you very much for showing us
Here I am, four years after you posted this video, making sure I did not mess up!! 🤣 Thanks!! 🥰
Thank you! I have been totally stressing. Just started canning and so afraid I will screw it up!
Thank you! I was looking everywhere for this very demonstration, and finally, after quite some time, I found it. This is perfect to send to people who are new to canning and who have been given food in canning jars.
Beth P. Thanks for the kind comments!
Great quick video! Watched several... this is the best! Thank u!
Thank you forever and ever!
thank you so much, i just started canning and needed to know if my mason jars sealed
I also watched a video where a lady said to take the Rings off so that if you get a false seal then you know cuz she had an issue with that by the way not to stack them on top of each other
Thx, I attempted canning for the 1st time today. Great info!
Vera Braswell. Sounds great! Best of luck canning!
Wow this was the best video ever I mean ever 😍
Thank you!
Nice!!! To the point, and very helpful. So many others would have taking the opportunity to explain how their figs preserve were made and a bunch of other crap i didn't click to know about.
Thanks for not being click bait.
The Truth II. Thanks!!
Easy to understand! Thanks!
Thanks!!
Thanks for the tip. Love your videos, learned a lot for a beginner
Thanks!!
Awesome
How do you process vegetables? Love your videos. I now make strawberry jam just like your video. Also the Bar b que sauce. Thank you so much.
Sheryl Anne Jacobs. Thanks so much! I pressure can my green beens and for my peas, I blanch them for three minutes and freeze them in pint containers.
How do you seal it if it isn’t sealed?
Some of my lids have that little dent in the center but some are flat. There’s no give and I usually have to open them with a can opener, Are the ones with the flat tops sealed properly. Also, sometimes when I take them out of the canner some are already sealed, is that ok? Thank you.
I have a question- I’ve been making jams. Today I made pepper relish. The last batch I did four of the lids did not pop. They are flat. I noticed the box of canning jars I just bought- some if the lids don’t have the make a big pop when you press on them. Some it’s just a small pop. Anyway- my question is do I have to redo the four jars with new lids?
Also- jam I made a few days ago had the indentation and now they are flat. I’m kind of freaking out because I’m sharing this with the family and I’ve got two grandkids.
Anyway to seal these without boiling them??
I am pickling kimchi but I don't want to cook it by boiling it to pop
If I push a lid in and it doesn’t come back up, is it ok. I waited several hours to push test, jar was completely cooled. I pushed the button on and it snapped down but did not push back up.
How do you make them seal?
Just canned some plums two days ago. The seals are not moveable, but not concave at all - just flat. No movement on them and they are not raised. Even if I take the rings off, and lift the jar by the lid/seal, it doesn't budge. Are they safely sealed?
Cat Shepard. Hi. It does sound like they are sealed. If there is no movement after you take off the ring and you can lift the jar by the lid. they are sealed. Good job!!
What if the kid isn’t indented in but is flat and there is no give. It’s have for me to sometimes see an indent.
Quick question, so I canned some jam yesterday (first time ever) and after boiling them for 10 minutes, took them out an waited for them to cool down and went to check the seal by pressing on the lids, some of them were slightly raise and when I pressed down on them they did not spring back up at all. Why is that? And is it a good seal if they stayed pushed down?
kat arerodz. Hi. The lid should be slightly indented in the middle. If it’s raised up, it sounds like it’s not sealed. Check them today and see if the lid is indented.
Useful Knowledge thanks for the reply! I just re canned everything and tried a few new tips from other canners, hopefully get better results! Thx
Question for you. When a jar first comes out of the pressure canner, if the button in the middle of the lid is up instead of concave, is that a problem? The next morning, the lids were concave, but I am concerned because they didn’t come out of the pressure canner than way. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi. Sounds like you took them out of the pressure canner while they were still hot. It takes a while for them to cool off enough to seal.
Those canned figs looked so good. Do you have a recipe?
Hi. Yes we do. Fig preserves are my favorite. The grandmother canned so many each year that she would line the baseboard of her kitchen in jars of fig preserves. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/2-IVtuUjzkg/v-deo.html
Looking at the comments I see I'm a year late but I have a question, do I do the push lid test after I take them out of the boiling pot or do I wait some time before I push lid test?
Hi. The lid will seal as the jar cools down so you’ll need to wait until it cools.
@@useful.knowledge thank you so very much.
@@useful.knowledge question: I did your test and it passed no giving in when pressing. Then I said well let make sure again and found out a video about tapping w a spoon. I found out I had 2 that sounded different but did noticed they were not as full. So I guess the sound tapping test on top may not be as accurate? Dies that sound correct to you? Thank u!
Hi. I haven’t heard of the spoon tapping method. Interesting! I do know that I use exactly what I show in the video and that works. Thanks for sharing!
So if I go in and find that one jar popped when I pressed did I just seal it? What should I do with eat?
If the jar is at room temp and the lid will press in, it’s not sealed. If it’s a day old, I would put it in the fridge. If it’s several days/weeks/months old, I would throw it out.
@@useful.knowledge thank you! I scoured the internet trying to find the answer to this question. Thank you for this!
Thank you for asking this! I was wondering the same thing!
Thanks!
I heard that you're not supposed to keep the ring on the jar to prevent mold. Do you agree?
Hi. I keep my rings on my jars and never had mold issues. Leaving the rings on will definitely help if you have a lid that didn’t seal. I had a jar about 10 years ago to look like it was about to pop but the ring kept it from doing so. I also give away jars of stuff at Christmas time and I think they look cool with the rings on.
What do you do if it didn't seal? Is there a way to reprocess the jar?
Charles K. Sarles. Hi. Yes you can reprocess. Just remove the jam, wash out the jar, and use a new lid. Reheat the jam (add a tap of water per pint) while reheating. Then repeat the canning process. Jelly is just about impossible to get to reset so I would put those in the fridge and eat them first. Best of luck!
Useful Knowledge thanks so much for the quick reply!!
If a jar isn’t sealed after the first day, can you go back and reseal it?
Hi. Yes, you can heat the contents back up and reseal in a clean jar with new lid.
Jamie do you leave the rings on the jars when you store them? Thank you
Carol Mckinney. I leave them on because many times I give some away for gifts. I understand that in the past if someone wanted to save some money that they may have stored without the bands. I also think they look better with the band on.
@@useful.knowledge my friend told me she had a mouse open 2 of her jars that didn’t have a band. She said no more! Now she uses bands because of that! 🤣
Hi. Thanks!! That’s the best reason I have heard for leaving the bands on.
I am boycotting ball for to many failures going to Kerr.
Why do they call it "canning" when you're sealing jars.....why not "jarring"? ha ha
I’m thinking glassing or Balling. Maybe masoning…..👀
How do I get the airtight seal on it though? I don’t know how to get mine sealed.
Hi. To get the seal you have to got through the canning process. For non-acidic items such as green beans or meat, you have to pressure can. For acidic items such as jams, jellies, marmalade, and tomatoes, I use open kettle canning or you can waterbath.
