I buy ALL my frames the last decade from ebay and I pay anything from 1$ to 3$ maximum for the frame only. Then I take my frame to a local store and I put the glass crystal with the filters and all, and I pay like 15~20 euros per glass, thus 30~40 euros for the pair (about 35~45$ for the crystals I choose).
And this way I have a beautiful frame that is almost free of charge and I have high quality of glass with filters for a reasonable price.
My guess is that you're getting a Chinese knockoff. Nothing wrong with that, but the frames won't last as long as the real thing.

The frames last me as long as I need them to last. But for 1$ I literally have like 50 glasses in my possession and I still paid a fraction of what an idiot pays luxotica to get the same glasses for 200~300$
Just did the same, ordered some cool frame from 'Ali-Express' for like 6$.
If all will go well and it'll be also comfortable enough on my face, i'll follow your advise with replacing the lenses :)

Luxotica now owns Essillor, the company that makes most of the lenses, as well as owning much of the retail trade, e.g. LensCrafters, Pearle.
I don't blame the company. They simply found an opportunity and they took it. What else would you expect them to do? Problem is with the government. There is no check on growing monopolies.

Randolph Engineering and American Optical sunglasses are both designed and manufactured in the U.S and they're amazing quality! Much better than new Ray Bans!

unfortunately they are actually more expensive than ray bans these days. i looked at the prices for ray ban aviators and they were around 150 dollars, while american optical is around 180 (240 for glass lenses) and randolph starts at 280.
If Luxottica was american it would be surely claimed as an "american dream success". Everybody would be saing Luxottica's CEO is the eyewear's Steve Jobs. The fact is that it is an italian industry and it makes americans realize they are not the only country that can have a dominant position on their own market!

Not so. Apple has Samsung and Google and other makers for phones. Google sells A LOT of Chromebooks and Dell still sells billions in computers. Then you have the software/OS. Comparing this asshole to Jobs is way off. If this were an American company, it would be broken up. They did it to AT&T and they only got to “get back together” after other long distance carriers and, later on, VOIP providers came along. It made things cheaper without quality suffering. This is all an illusion. Why do they make/decision Chanel glasses? It’s all plastic. Prices are up and people pay because they HAVE to, especially with prescriptions. “It is American. It’s an American Brand owned by Italians.” It’s not an American company and they aren’t made in America. This is a monopoly and it should be illegal.

The moral of the story is go to Walmart or Costco there you can get a quailty frame at a much lower cost. It is such a shame to see Oakly held up the way they were and then to have no alternative than to sell out.

Interesting... but only looked at from the perspective of the frame manufacturer - which I suppose is right given that the frame brands are most visible to people. But it really is only one part of glasses manufacturing. Be interesting to see a report from 60 minutes on the lens side of things (Essilor International S.A.). But I suppose the good is that it does seem like more work and technologies are at play in lens making...

As a "regular human" I always think of Italians smiling, singing and being nice! Now, as a Business-Strategy Consultant it helps my clients to understand "Marketing" ... though that squirming CEO is not much of an example in the "Ethics" department. :-)

I'll stick with Zenni. Really nice looking glasses and sunglasses for well under a hundred bucks a pair. $55 for my prescription glasses with photo chromic lenses. Sure the service can be pretty hit and miss but that quality to price point is hard to beat

on the 70's-80's you could get a pair of RayBan and you was sure that the 2 pieces of glass in front of you where FKing top of the line made by Bausch & Lomb, the same company who was making optics for the military, microscopes, cameras! Now you pay over $200 for a set of glasses that maybe will last a couple of years, the glass will start showing signs of degradation and when you call to ask for warranty they will say "we don't have parts/we don't longer manufacture parts, but we can sell you a new pair"... Be smart and hunt a good set of RayBan made on the late 70's with the B&L logo engraved, get some broken frames for spare parts and as long as you take good care they will last you a lifetime! (I'm looking for some good ambermatic for range practice!)

I still have my 1983 Bausch & Lomb Aviators. The 2002 Luxottica Ray-bans in my photo broke years ago.
I retorted to scan Ebay, about 7 years ago, and try to find plenty of B&L models, which had decent prices, and was lucky enough to get many of them at absurd prices, some of them at decent ones, and a few with high prices, such as a 1965 5022 which had a documented history. Made a group of them for a very good price, and even added a few equally cheap Luxottica models. And let me tell you, I still use the B&L ones every day, and the Luxo ones have gone to shite in different moments.

I advise all readers make sure your optician will give you a proper prescription ( i.e. not missing the pupil to pupil measurement ) BEFORE you have your vision tested. Then buy your glasses online to circumvent their monopolistic practices.

It's really not that different from the high end fashion industry e.g. LVMH owns many of the luxury labels in clothing, accessories and perfumes. At least with glasses you get many years' wear out of them. Years ago an optometrist told me that most glasses frames come out of the same factory in Italy and yes there has always been a huge mark-up. So take note of some competitors and support them. Some great boutique brands now coming out of Japan e.g. Owndays who have a range of frames and lenses that fit and if you have a standard script, make up your glasses in-store in 20 minutes. Ausralia has some nice boutique hand-made frames too. But they are expensive and lenses in Australia have a big mark-up. Looking back on what I paid a few years ago, it looks like competition from online shopping overseas is starting to force local stores to lower their prices, and it's about time. Either that or it's simply that new technology with tough plastics etc. has made manufacturing cheaper.

I’m concerned about the quality of LENSES from market stalls vs those in departmental stores vs those in optical shops. Esp when it comes to polarized lenses or anti-UV ones, how do we know they are really good? Sunglasses can range from $20 plus to $200 plus. Are the $20 plus quality the same?
Luxottica makes glasses for 0.5billion ppl so there are surely other companies making dubious lenses. How are consumers to know?

I have Eyemed vision insurance and went to Lenscrafters which is one of their providers. After everything, exam and choosing my eyewear, the bill they tried to shove down my throat was $459.00 after applying insurance. In all my years of wearing glasses, from age 12 to now 57, I have never seen such a rip off in my life. I was flabbergasted at the cost. I had to argue with them to get the price down. I have never seen anything so ridiculous in my life. I'm not rich and made of money. I need a bargain. These companies are not for the average American or little guy struggling everyday financially to make it. This is not right, especially those who desperately need glasses and are not in the category of the "rich and elite " group. This sickens me !!
How did “you argue to get the price down”? The only thing that could have happened would be if you dropped special coatings like scratch resistant and anti-reflective.
@@lisamarielund6292 Thanks for your response Lisa 😊. I told them I only wanted standard progressive lenses instead of the premium type that they were trying to push on me . I didn't need that . The standard are just fine for me . She spewed at me that "I guess you want pop bottle lenses then ", which was uncalled for . She was treating me horrible and talking down to me like I was dirt . I asked the eye doctor and she said standard were fine. I told the lady at LensCrafters that and she was angry 😠 because I was right. They couldn't make a ton of money on me . I told her I wanted standard or forget it . She was mean to me the whole time and argued with me. I got my way though and she hesitantly made out a new and lower bill for me. Some people can't afford the elite high prices for things , especially something as important as eye glasses which are very necessary for many people and should be affordable for all .

I have had over 15 years out of my Oakleys. They've been stood on three times and completely separated. Simply popped em back together.. $250-300nzd from memory (170-220usd)
Now how many 20 dollar petrol station sunglasses, would I have broken and bought in the same time? Not to mention they barely fit properly and can you trust the UV coating?

$150 for a pair of rayban sunglasses you have to be rich for that? if you makes 8.38 per hour whic is minuim wage and work 40 hours per week you can afford a pair in esse ten one week of work. you can actually aford a pair in 18 hours of working which is not even 3 full shifts, lets include playing taxes so lets say 20 hours so that 8 hours per day not even three full shifts since 8 times three is 24 hours and you can have a pair thats three days of working were is your logic good sir? and this is minuim wage the lowest you can make many people make more then that sir.

No, if you make $8 an hour and in one day you work 8 hours, that means you make $64 a day. Obviously you need food and other necessities which will only let you save maybe $10 if you're lucky. You'll then proceed to save up for 15 days, only for sunglasses.

I've known this for 10 years, probably since I was 24 or 25. Luxottica is awesome about replacing damaged lenses and frames. They'll usually just send you a new pair and this is the reason why, I guess.

I have a vintage pair made in France and they don’t feel that great in my hands compared to my luxottica made ray bans. They feel cheap in comparison.

I'll tell you how they get away with saying "Made in Italy" on the inside of the crap Oakleys you are wearing as well as all the other brands they own. They have all the injected crap plastic made in China along with the rest of the material and then ship it to Italy to have it assembled, hence "Made" in Italy. Don't be fooled. Ask yourself this, is there ANYTHING about an Oakley that looks Italian?! Think about a Ferrari, Lamborghini and even the damn Vespa.
And the only way to get Oakleys made in the US is if you own a Delorean or you are buying vintage frames from the early 90's and earlier.

Oakley’s “Made in USA” sunglasses (produced in California) retail for just as much as most of Luxottica’s “Made in Italy” brands. The US hardly manufactures any eyewear these days, and when it does it’s premium-priced. China has its own monopoly on affordable eyewear…

***** the problem with this which i think was not addressed directly at the end is that, we are willing to pay such a high price because it is the only way we can get glasses of that quality. If not we would have to go with glasses of lower quality. If there was more competition this would not be the case. I can see how all this can benefit consumers by concentrating resources in such a way so long that the head of the company has his heart in the right place. But how as, consumers, can we know that this guy is not making abnormal profits?
So you are selling a luxury product, but still is it OK to make abnormal profits off people who are capable of buying a luxury product? The problem here is you have made luxury products more expensive because you have taken out all the competition, which in turn is not good for the consumer as you can set what ever price you like. This cannot be right, as if all corporations are like this, we as consumers will be enslaved, and have no choice!

To be fair at least they rescued Raybans. We have 3 pairs of them in our house - 1 vintage, 1 current sunglasses and 1 prescription glasses.
Luxottica upgraded Ban Ray. Since 1999 is more elegant, much more comfortable as an eyewear than it used to. We are talking about a total refurbishment!
To all those complaining about this Monopoly, there are more modern competitors such as Warby Parker, Zenni, and GlassesUSA.
It might be hard to buy online if you have a very complicated Rx.

Love Oliver People's, I love How beautiful they look how they feel , the little details on the glasses. I know personally what great quality they are. I f they are being marked up a bit ... well that's not cool. It's not right.... but I needed Eyeglasses. And I also needed or wanted high quality eyeglasses , it's such a different experience for everyone when purchasing Eyeglasses.
Just buy other brands. Maui Jim is very popular high quality sunglasses. On the expensive side but at least not under that CEO

There are many, many brands of high quality sunglasses online in the 50- 100$ range. Just do a little shopping around online instead of rushing into something you see at dicks sporting goods, or jc penney, sunglass hut. Seriously.
