State should be embarrassed and fire everyone associated with the lottery, with a college degree, who missed this. But nobody gets fired for incompetence in government. What a feel-good story!?
The “underdog” was the hundreds of thousands of people who lost the money that they won as well as the (tax) money the state took out of the prize pools.
'State makes millions' *off of the **_millions_** of dummies* that willingly...eagerly fork over their hard-earned(in most cases) money on an inherently and ultimately losing proposition.

What an awesome story! My brain just can't comprehend any math that's more complicated than balancing my checkbook, so this story really impressed me. I wish I knew someone who could figure out a lottery loophole like that, cuz I'd definitely buy tickets!
State of California never had a "Roll down" Lotto. After this man explained what he did one can see why lotteries don't do this anymore. I have a mathematics degree and the ONLY lottery system I ever had was solving the algorithm placement of winning scratcher tickets when the lottery first came out in 1985. I would buy up 500 to 1000 scratchers then scratch off the areas where the winners were located then return the unscratched tickets to the store where I purchased them for a refund. Back then one could return unscratched tickets; can't now. Then I would redeem the winners at another store. It worked until the tickets were sold with the legal condition that once sold, gone for good from the store, whether one scratches them or not.
Let's be real here, they don't care at that time even if they knew it because they're getting millions of sales. That tabloid story is the one that put the nail in coffin
They did Nothing Wrong !! As a matter of fact the older couple was driving almost 1000 miles and then in a cheep motel room they sat for 10 per day going through the tickets. Good for them ✌🏼👍🏼😎
I used to buy lottery tickets for my Aunt, I've seen people literally play hundreds of dollars in lottery numbers. And not just once in a while this happened almost every time I went.
It’s not that amazing to do the math, it’s the fact that these people had the patience and diligence to read the lottery rules. I was actually at MIT when my dorm mates hired people at the dorm to sort the tickets at minimum wage 😂 good memories. I had no idea they were winning so much.
Lack of sales? Michigan most likely discontinued Winfall because it finally caught on that someone was beating the odds. These people found a way to always hit the jackpot on a slot machine.
na, because if they wanted to stop it all they would have had to do is cancel the rolldown on prizes once the jackpot hit $5m. i would say it was more they wanted to rebrand and go after those bigger headline wins rather then when a prize hits 5m because they were playing so many tickets they were likely not winning the jackpot, but draining the the pool of funds with tons of 5,4 and 3 winning numbers. that's not exactly good for the lottery because to sell the lottery to the average person the way you do it is with the idea of winning the big jackpot. if everytime the prize goes over 5m they do this they are likely messing with the ability to promote said big wins
Absolutely wonderful. What a great story! God bless... It isn't often we open the computer, newspaper, whatever and have a smile come out of it. Thank you! ( And I love chicken pot pie!)!!!
You save the losing tix because you can use that loss against the gain. What a great story that he let others in on the opportunity that he had figured out.
Based on everything it appears that everybody won: Jerry and Marge, their friends, their kids and grandkids, the states that they played the game in, and the colleges. Well done. 👍
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 to this couple! I’ve always said that the rollover lottery amounts and the huge multi-million dollar payouts are outrageous. Hearing about this, if say my state, California, instituted roll down of all funds above 1-5 million, and the odds exponentially increased, AND the CA lottery advertised that, I’m sure MANY more people would play. As indicated in this video, it would definitely be a win win.
If States circulated money like this with just- one - of their lotteries , the financial overflow would circulate right back making each state able to help communities , and organizations that need this
Back in 2009 there was a similar game out here and I picked up on it real quick. My wife and I basically did the same thing and we made close to $8 million in 9 weeks. Then we invested our winnings and retired in our 20s. We are now in our 40s and loving life. Thanks Lottery!

These people are amazing. I love how they shared the wealth. Also, this guy was so methodical, it's amazing. Smarter than the kids at MIT!
What a feel good story for this old couple.
Congrats to them. They made me smile.
This guy got his friends and family involved sharing the wealth. Great guy
Dozens and dozens of children all educated what an amazing story. No lambos, Tahiti trips, just Marge’s pot pie.
Hopefully , the "dozens and dozens of children" concentrated on/majored in something of practical use as opposed to allowing themselves to be brainwashed by the monstrous cretins running and occupying most of this nation's 'Institutions of Higher Learning'.
I LOVE hearing stories like this!!! Good for them!!!
I love this kind of stories also. From your comment i can tell you're a woman with a beautiful soul and kind heart Jane.
Yeah love the story. How're you doing?
Yeah, it’s a very great story and I love it. How’re you? Hope family and friends are doing great?
The math went over my head but I am glad for this couple.
its kinda crazy because that math is not even that much higher than basic math skills.
great story! what makes it even better is that they shared their strategy and winnings with family and trusted friends.
like a crooked casino, the states just couldn't stand it when someone other than them was raking in all the cash - even when it was a relatively minor percentage of the total.
My heart melts when he chuckles 😃💯💞
What a special couple, special American town and wonderful families. God bless them all !!
Growing up in Evart and going to the corner store. They absolutely deserve every penny they won fairly.
My dudes got a giant brain. He obviously should be rewarded for putting all those braincells to use. 1000000% respect.
To him it was just simple arithmetic
@@theomz007 to anybody with a basic high school education it was simple math. He just noticed it and more importantly was in a financial position to and did indeed act.
Came here from the movie 👏👏👏 absolutely standing story im so inspired and happy to learn about them two.God bless them ,beautiful life
I love this story. These people are down to earth and grounded! Worked hard and honestly their whole lives and love family over material goods. Very intelligent to put education first. This story made my day and warmed my heart.
God. Bless them all. ❤❤❤
Now, please cover the college nerds and give us the scoop. Please don't leave anything out! Many thanks. 👏👏👏
Love the story, it’s great. How’re you hope friend and family are fine?
I love this story about the fact that they were able to drive long distances, sort these tickets out for 10 hrs. at a time, etc. Jerry formed a business & brought his friends in on it. They shared the winnings with family, friends & remodeled their house. The state never saw a man with a master's degree in math & his wife coming! I love how they improved the lvies of everyone around them. They didn't harm anyone & certainly weren't greedy!
Yeah, it’s a very great story and I love it. How’re you? Hope family and friends are doing great?
Crazy how the lottery company thought no one would catch up to their “secret”😂
WOW! I saw an ad for this. I didn't pay much attention, writing it off as a goofy story line for some improbable "feel good" movie. I'm SHOCKED to learn that it was actually TRUE! Kudos to them for figuring out the odds & to 60 Minutes for doing the story! So much more satisfying than a fictional "feel good" fictional movie.
The best thing is that they shared with others, brilliant.
Yeah , The story was great love it. How're you ? Friends and family are staying safe?
Gotta love this man and his answers to the interviewer. Sparkling of whom, he was awesome as well.
Very nice story. It’s good hear that there are still wholesome people out there .
WOW!!! What a heartwarming story & they’re fellow Michiganders! All my respect to Jerry. He’s a mathematical genius. However, he’s so humble and just matter of fact.
And, Marge!
State makes millions yet are the sorest of losers! I am always rooting for the underdog. What a wholesome story. Go Jerry and Marge!!! 👏
@@sarahdeshay1394 No one forced them to play the lottery. No one forced them to vote to allow the state to sponsor a lottery. No one forced the state to be so incompetent that they devised a game that could be 'beaten'.
@@mitchyoung93
Not so much beaten, just cracked to loosen the pools wall to leak a little. The state still "won" 120 million in profit, then taxed the winnings of 26 million enough that this couple only "won" after taxes 8 million...
So it's not really incompetence, a couple someones figured out the numerical loophole and got just rewards
Dear Jerry and Marge:
I'm up for adoption real soon.
Yeah. Love the story it is a great story. How’re you? Hope friends and family are doing fine? Have a safe day
How humble are Jerry and March. May God bless their souls
When I lived in Michigan and was young and new to the job market, I quickly learned, it's not what you know that matters, it's who you know that matters most. It's also a bit sad that more people didn't figure this out. I'm happy for this couple. Great story. Thanks.
Meaning that is is good to have friends....
In this case though... It literally was what you knew. (the statistical odds)
Yep. I am where I am at in my career pretty much all based on who I know.
What a wonderful couple.
Truly an American small town story of Math genius running the corner store.
I hope the money brings them joy.
Yeah hope so. The story was great love it. How're you Kim? Friends and family are staying safe?
Congratulations. They deserve joy and respect. Great American story.
Yes - agree!
God bless the old folks! 🇺🇲
May peace of mind and warmth of human heart fill their lives forevermore.
Thanks to 60Minutes for a piece of enriching journalism.
With this coming out the system will change for sure. Thank you for sharing. You guys deserved every penny.
Eventually they noticed after years of this. But they will probably make a new mistake, apparently they're all very dumb in the government, and they pay no penalty for it. I didn't hear of anyone getting fired.
Very genuine couple, to bring in all friends and family in.
"Dumbfoundedly amazed" is a phrase I hope to be able to use in the future.
But then you'd technically be dumb
🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
🤣a retired couple figured out the lottery, told their friends, and a bunch of grandchildren got their school paid for? MURCA!
Great story, nice to see someone doing something good for others by finding a loophole. The movie is quite enjoyable and really pushes that idea as well. Do good for others, less for yourself.
These people are wonderful ❤ Love them . God has Blessed them both with a very fun bright future . Thank you God . Big beautiful family you need all you won . I pray each one knows just how treasured their parent and grandparent are . I hope they write a book or even a movie about their life . 🙏😊❤
What an awesome story! My brain just can't comprehend any math that's more complicated than balancing my checkbook, so this story really impressed me. I wish I knew someone who could figure out a lottery loophole like that, cuz I'd definitely buy tickets!
You & Me both Darlene
this is just about the easiest math I've ever heard. don't let the interviewers amazement mislead you.

What was a "roll down?" And why is/was that advantageous? 🤔
@@Chandrika-Eleven Dude it's spelled out in the video. You want a timestamp?
@@Chandrika-Eleven 2:40
Great story, keep these stories coming, we all need them! 👏💕🕊💋
I love this story. Nice one Jerry and Marge. Brilliant how you have helped your family, friends and community 💜😁
Mr. Jerry was a blessing to so many. Thank God for him.
I love that they are such low key , humble people. Kind of reminds me of my Dad.
Yeah , The story was great love it and so happy for them. How're you ? Hope Friends and family are staying safe?
‘…. $26 million…’
Jerry: ‘that was satisfactory’ 😂🤣
😂🤣😅🤣🤣🤣😂
@@kellyberry4173 hi Yeah , The story was great love it. How're you ? Friends and family are staying safe?
Good for them! This actually made me happy that they won so much and shared it too!... 👍🏼👍🏼
Fantastic reporting on a fellow who paid attention during his math classes…
Education pays off for those who use it!
Something about people who live in the Midwest. Down to earth, hardworking, and giving.
The dumb part is the lottery commission "didn't know" how easy it was to win. They accused the winners of being the problem.
And when they started paying out more than expected (and only through one game) they didn't check for loopholes or do an analysis.
They got mad they had a game to offer and it was beatable
Noone ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American public...
Let's be real here, they don't care at that time even if they knew it because they're getting millions of sales. That tabloid story is the one that put the nail in coffin
@@xrizbira …the snitchers.
So cool. So happy for them and their friends because these people are not greedy. 🙏
Utterly fantastic story. Kudos for them

They did Nothing Wrong !! As a matter of fact the older couple was driving almost 1000 miles and then in a cheep motel room they sat for 10 per day going through the tickets. Good for them ✌🏼👍🏼😎
Wow, what store clerk was ringing up those tickets. It would have taken all day!
I would have thought the MIT crew would have made a machine to sort the tickets. Haha
MIT and Harvard snobs. Typical
@@prst99 yeah but it sounds like it was early 2000s. i dont think technology was that decent yet to make a machine that can scan numbers

The person that gave the tip was mad that nobody wanted to let them play 😂😂😂😂
Give the IRS auditor a metal folding chair in the corner of a cold pole barn with 18 million lottery tickets. Nice.
Can’t wait to see the film starring Bryan Cranston and Annette Bening. _Jerry and Marge Go Large_

The rolldown doesn't occur unless they receive a threshold of money. The state was NOT losing money on this exchange.
Great story! So happy for regular people to come out ahead.
Amazing story. Just watched the movie and I gotta say these are amazing people and couldn’t be happier for them.
Absolutely wonderful. What a great story! God bless...
It isn't often we open the computer, newspaper, whatever and have a smile come out of it. Thank you!

You save the losing tix because you can use that loss against the gain. What a great story that he let others in on the opportunity that he had figured out.
The really smart part was how well they kept it all documented.
Congratulations. 6 Children and hard work and you are finally rewarded. Blessing and Safety.
Based on everything it appears that everybody won: Jerry and Marge, their friends, their kids and grandkids, the states that they played the game in, and the colleges. Well done. 👍
Actually, no. Most lost. A few people won......... again, again, and again.
Yeah, it’s a very great story and I love it. How’re you? Hope family and friends are doing great?
You assume money magically appeared?
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 to this couple!
I’ve always said that the rollover lottery amounts and the huge multi-million dollar payouts are outrageous. Hearing about this, if say my state, California, instituted roll down of all funds above 1-5 million, and the odds exponentially increased, AND the CA lottery advertised that, I’m sure MANY more people would play. As indicated in this video, it would definitely be a win win.
*win/win
If States circulated money like this with just- one - of their lotteries , the financial overflow would circulate right back making each state able to help communities , and organizations that need this
I love how my dude is like, I don’t understand how no one else saw it.
Back in 2009 there was a similar game out here and I picked up on it real quick. My wife and I basically did the same thing and we made close to $8 million in 9 weeks. Then we invested our winnings and retired in our 20s. We are now in our 40s and loving life. Thanks Lottery!
No way😂😂😂
