- Welcome to Let's Play Dragon Warrior 3!
In this episode, we begin our quest gathering information of the impending evil and recruit our party members for the vast journey ahead.
I used a new video compressor and upgraded the video editor for this episode. Let me know if the quality is at least as good as before.
For future reference, I plan for most episodes in this LP to be 10-12 minutes. I just felt like making this episode longer to get through the first town.
Special thanks to Fionorde Quester on my forums for his help in joining me testing out different classes and parties. He really went above and beyond for helping me prepare this LP. Also special thanks to 1whoistornapart on the GameFAQs forums for hacking and compiling several documents with extremely detailed information on the game mechanics. A list of my resources can be found here:

Thanks for watching!
That intro cutscene is really amazing for its time.
i agree it was really amazing for its time.
This game is great! I love how they incorporated the cutscene in the beginning. Dragon Warrior (Quest) series is so light hearted and cheerey... except when a warrior is pulled into a caldera... or when a princess "must" marry you... or a city falls to ruin and the princess it turned into a dog. "For all of the gold in Alfgood... I refuse to name my dog Ruffles."
MOTHER: "Be on your best behavior in front of the king..."
::goes to the king::
HCBAILLY: "Hey... how's it goin'? XD
You're classic.
Currently binge watching hcbaily dragon warrior playthroughs.
I'm playing the GBC version and that was my first RPG ever. Great game Sir Bailly.
I love this one so much. I played the SNES fan translation, and it was really fun. Definitely a high point in the series.
@levelmaster2 Yes, absolutely. They do a great job of making the plot of this game stand on its own, yet still be rewarding to those who have played the other two, and catch all the references.
I like how you named all your party members after DW IV people nice touch
The creator of Dragon Ball made the game's art! Respect!
My favorite RPG on the NES, including FF1/FF2. Love the feel of this game, you can tell the developers enjoyed making it. Pretty deep game considering the NES limitations, and the battle mechanics were much more fair in DW3 than DW2.
Ok I’ve watched thru this let’s play like 300 times. It’s my go to listen at work
Just curious, how many test runs do you do before lping a game?
I didn't get DW III until way late, it was my 2nd true love for the NES (got Battletoads in '91 for Xmas). Until I FINALLY got DW IV sometime in the mid/late 90s, this game was IT. I didn't even get a Super NES until Xmas '95 :( I just turned 17 that day!!
This is one of my favorite games of all time.
I have been waiting soooooo long for this, its gonna be great! Thinking of playing through the SNES one with only three ppl in my party.
I loved that you name your party after characters from DWIV (Which just so happens to be my favorite game of all time :D).
Cannot wait to see more episodes of this LP!!
This is the first RPG I've ever beaten and it's still one of my all-time favorites.
Holy crap, 1987 and an animation of that quality? Daaaaayum.
Also I like how he chops the dragons' wing off and didn't just do one of the samurai run-past things.
I'm so happy your doing an LP of this game, I love seeing Toriyama's art work :)
Yay, DWIII! I like the Super Famicom version, though..and the Thief class that's in it. This is my favorite of the first three games as there's a lot to do, a lot of different ways you can put a party together, being able to have a stable of heroes that you can call upon for certain situations (though for that to be practical you have to grind a lot)..this is just pure old-school goodness.
I found the Gameboy version at a yard sale for $5 back in '01. My favorite RPG, period.
Wow, this seriously is some impressive animation for the NES. I had no idea they had anything like this, I've only played the GBC version of this game.
Hey, HC. I'm still new to the world of Dragon Warrior. I've seen family play it but I've never really had time. So thanks for this walkthrough on it. I like watching people play more then playing it myself.
I first met you with your Walkthrough of Chrono Trigger and I gotta say, you do a great job on your Let's Plays
i already love that beginning cutscene.
Could you do an LP of the Mother/EarthBound trilogy?
This is gonna be AWESOME.
Quality? QUALITY?? It's through the roof!! It's quite excellent! I would definitely keep it!
While the fighter based parties are probably the strongest, I want to see another LP of this where you give the Wizard his day. It's pretty tricky to play him optimally; if nothing else, there's a lot to remember. LP this again with the Wizard-based party!
I've heard some people use Merchant to reach Level 20 as quickly as possible, to convert into a Sage.
Also, why didn't you do the Gameboy Color version of this game, HCBaily?
The opening with some guy fighting the dragon was something they made specifically for the North America port of this game. They made the original game to teach people how to play RPG games. It was *HUGE* in Japan, so they doubled down for the NA release and nobody wantes it. And Nintendo Power gave it away FREE to all the subscribers. The 2nd game was rushed and poorly balanced and is a great example of "Grind: The Game"
So now we're at the 3rd entry, and this is the game I feel like they implemented everything they wanted and got the balance right and to this day, it is probably the best RPG ever made. Chrono Trigger and Shining Force come close, but this game is an absolute diamond!
I'm curious to know if there is someone who is familiar with a gb/gbc game that you can register party members similarly to how you can in dragon warrior 3. From what I can remember, you start the game as some kind of monster and you can go around and actually attack the people in a small village. This sequence affects the game somehow.
keep up your legendary work HCBailly!
The inns have rooms this time! WHAT A CONCEPT!! :DDD
Why are you dissing on the Wizard class! They have some really powerful spells which compliment the mele fighters very well. And If you keep them in the back they will hardly ever get hit.
Replace them with another Warrior or a Fighter and you have pretty much the same offensive output tho. Especially in this game where enemy groups aren't that big. Only real reason to have a Wizard is if you want to learn Bikill without having a sage learn it.
Chris Champagne The Wizard does have a lot of very useful spells - however, I personally always felt that he died very often, and I always change him into a Priest or a Sage after learning the useful spells.
So let me think about this: The King was waiting for Ortega's Son about 10 or more years to grow up to the age of 16 and THEN maybe try and find about Ortega, and rescue him if possible... What were they thinking?!?!?! O_O
Still my favorite game in the series!
+jackstalke Yeah. I'd definitely put this one or the second one. Both really improved upon the original, but in somewhat unique ways that make them both different and amazing in their own special ways. I don't feel like II beats III nor the other way around.
Wow that cutscene is VERY impressive for the time!!!
Wow, the hero must be pretty paranoid to sleep fully armored. He probably suspects something suspicious about that person in the room right across from him.
I wish they'd make these games playable on PC! Even after over twenty years since i last played the earlier Dragon Warrior games, I still miss playing them.
Gee, thanks for the details-free (and therefore totally unhelpful) assertion. A bit more info might have been nice.
I *tried* downloading these games (III in particular), but doing so only loused up my computer (forcing me to save to an earlier time to be rid of unwanted pop ups) and gave me a game that was indeed playable but which did not save games once shut off - and I sure wasn't going to keep the thign running until I was all the way through the game!.
And as they say, once bitten twice shy.
I have since discovered the first five games available on Super Nintendo and simply bought them along with a new NES/SNES player (which I'd thought unavailable until now). and an edition of the original Final Fantasy (the only one i've ever played so far). Already have FF; first time I've played it in 22 years!
@@jasontoddman7265 I just discovered a couple of NES sites that include the Dragon Warrior games. One sites states that you can save your progress (emulator.online) but I haven't tried saving it yet . Yeah, I would t leave my computer on either.
Thanks, but I since simply bought an NES/SNES player along with the first six Dragon Warrior games (and the first Final Fantasy) online. Yeah, that's how obsessed I suddenly got about playiong those old games. Nostalgic value mainly, i guess.
What do you do to stop your mp from not leveling up right? When I hit level 23 in my characters, at level ups, suddenly 2 levels in a row my wizards are NOT getting mp each level up. And I hoped to ask how to avoid this, or if there's some trick to make it so your mp doesn't stop going up? Sometimes my priest also has mp not go up on some of these levels. And don't want to gimp my stats.
OMG, I can't tell you how much I was looking forward for this. Here I am, sitting in my armchair with a really nasty flu, not allowed to visit my girlfriend or go with my friends to the pub, really pissed off about life, the world and everything and all of a sudden I see that there's a new Dragon Warrior LP by HCBailly!
You really made my day with this!
What really sucks is the IOS version doesn't have this cutscenes and just has the hero standing on a cliff answering questions
Ummm did you let the title screen sit there for a while?
Being a fan of DQI and remembering how much of a blast I had with DQVIi, and now having a similar blast with the new DQXI, I feel I must play this now--this version for it's in english. Well then~!
I really like the indoor system, feels more natural than other games.
Beginning at 7:20...I agree about the battle mechanics here. A huge improvement over the first two games. And they're also quite a bit better than any of the three 8-bit Final Fantasies. I think the reason is that as Enix, and eventually Square, saw their business fortunes improve, they could set larger design budgets and hire more qualified battle mechanics engineers (likely people with a math degree!).
Once it’s released, will you play the HD-2D remakes of the first three Dragon Quest games?
it might just be me but i think this is the best dragon warrior game this one got me into the series
@frostare If you want to get technical, excluding the early mainframe-based games, Akalabeth (the precursor to the Ultima series) was the very first computer RPG. There were a few other computer RPGs made between when Garriot wrote Akalabeth and Ultima, including an adaptation of the Traveller tabletop RPG, the Tower of Apshai, and the infamous Rogue (which itself sparked a genre). Ultima III was a trendsetter, but hardly the first.
I love this franchise.
Good times, good times... :-(
Milan Striker Why the sad smiley, then?
Use the happy smiley instead. =D
Smilely-smile.
lol
I loved the last two Dragon warrior LPs, roll on!
cool walkthrough. Thank you. This is one of the best games ever.
Goof-off sounds like an amazing addition to a party. I wonder why that hasn't become a staple.
Been waiting for you to do this, IV, and V for a long time...thanks!
This was my favorite NES game as a kid. For some reason I did tons and tons of grinding near the end (like a ridiculous amount) and got my party to level 70, only to have the game's battery fail and wipe out my file.
Sounds like HCBailly had a somewhat similar problem if he came back 7 years later to finish it.
I never completed the game and it's been 15 years since I've played it. Looking forward to seeing the master in action. =)
@Bsuperflu I haven't played the GBC version, so I don't know all the differences. I know there's some Small Medal sidequest thing you can do, there's the Thief job class, and some additional items.
Love the DQ4 names. I did the same thing
LMAO...so gotten to know you over these Let's Plays...when the cut scene ended, I said aloud, "And...they...died." ;)
Oh...my...giddy...aunt!!!
When I was younger and had actual time for these, I used to rank the time table like this...
- Dragon Warrior 1. - 1 week, tops.
- Dragon Warrior 2. - 1 month, if slow.
- Dragon Warrior 4. - A month, period.
- Dragon Warrior 3. - Good bye, year!
Of course, since half the game is just grinding against the same monsters...editing will shave it to pure plot. Yay!
This is definitely my favorite of the series (actually, its the only game in the series I *like*). I think its because I played the GBC version, and I was amazed at how much content they managed to put in a gameboy color game
I also first played this on the GBC. The final boss was tough as hell, but the game was kickass! So many awesome additions they put in from this version. I still have the guide book from it, though it had to be taped together after falling apart from how much I read it :P
Quick question.
Have you played the rest of the Dragon Quest games?
If so, what is your favorite?
HC Bailly, how bad was that blizzard by you? I live in the suburbs of Chicago and it was pretty bad here (4 to 8 foot drifts of snow...and a couple that I saw which were bigger).
DW2 was by far the MOST Challenging...this one wasn't NEARLY as painfully difficult BUT Just as fun!
Great first vid, HC! My older brother considers this to be his least favorite in the series. I guess he didn't really like the little "Build your own party" aspect. He said they actually handled it better in IX, but I'm not as hardcore about the series as he is, so I wouldn't know. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next! Keep up the brilliant work! XD
Oh, by the way, what do you think of the Symphonic Suites for the Dragon Quest series? I personally think they're awesome... XD
Wait... it said Ortega fell into the volcano at the END of a battle... does that mean it went like this?
Ortega: Alright the dragon has been slayed! *Slips and falls into the volcano* NOOOOOOO!
What an embarrassing way to die.
Awesome. Glad to see you start your Dragon Warrior 3 LP. :)
The reason Dragon Quest and Dragon Warrior are so similiar are because they are the exact same thing. In Japan they were always Dragon Quest, but in America they were called Dragon Warrior up until 2005. They called it Dragon Warrior to avoid a lawsuit, up until the company they wanted to avoid went bankrupt so they were able to take the name Dragon Quest.
An HCBailly draws near!
Command?
Viewer finds popcorn for never-ending HCBailly video-watching.
Thou hast done well in finding the popcorn.
I remember begging my Mom to get this game for Christmas when I was a kid, and her dishing out 50 or so dollars to do so. It was probably my favorite game in my entire NES library(I didn't own DW4).
just to correct you HC, for us in Japan this game came out in 1988 and we didnt get the opening cutscene in the original also we didnt get the DQ4 file music. and finally this the first DQ to use battery back up
So Glad you did This one too!!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy the video! In the future, you may want to combine your comments in a single video, as they can get caught in a spam filter, sometimes.
Love to see you do the ios or switch/GBC version of the game.
I'd like to know what personalities you'd go for. Right now the Amazon personality has made my thief OP.
woot, my favorite of the original three DQs
I'm glad DQIX took so much inspiration from this one
Hero, Soldier, Wizard, Pilgrim. GOTTA HAVE a WIZARD in your party because for Starters the Wizard become the MOST KICKASS Sage when you get to That point. You simply do not need another Fighter when you've got the hero and soldier
Coming back to this LP waiting for the arrival of Erdrick in Smash.
Or to just watch some good ol' fashioned hcbailly.
When the Wizard becomes a sage (black AND white magic) she becomes the most vitally Important member of the party.
@Darlos9D Just saying that Dragon Quest isn't considered only 'fantasy.' It touches more than one genre with the dungeon series, monsters series, swords, heroes series, and now wars game. You can't loop all the games into one category if you only know a single one from the series. DQ is like a giant, slime-filled monopoly.
It feels like an age since I watched a video from you.
HC Bailey, is there any major differences between this version and the gamboy color version
One of the best games ever right here!
The only thing that can rival the DW3 manuals are the ones that came with FF1. Also full dungeon maps, item list, who can equip what, the hp of every normal monster, and all that jazz
steampunk started late 70's, cyberpunk in early 80's, but pre-steampunk basically included just novels like Clark's "Queen Victoria's Bomb", 1969, with no central ideology or conception, and before that there were dime novels in the 19th century that told edisonade stories, basically stories of someone creating a new form of transportation to travel to the American frontier, to explore the unknown, i guess Chrono Trigger is kinda like an edisonade if u consider lucca the "Edison" like-inventor
Great! Teenager rescuing the world, that´s the best plot a game could possibly have!
Okay...a Archfiend which no one knows...but it´s so sinister that it´s going to destroy the world...that´s really impressive XD
Different classes for your party members...but story important party members don´t exist or do they?
I think this opening scene was added to the American version as well, just like the one in DW2.
I have the Japanese version on my computer and it just instantly goes to the adventure log screen.
I've never played any of the dragon warrior games, I tried 7 but couldn't get into it. I'm looking forward to seeing what it's all about. And, HOLY CRAP IS THAT TROGDOR?!?
@HCBailly - What is your opinion on the GB remake? I for one rather enjoyed it. The addition of the Thief class (always love Thieves) made a good improvement, Merchant's got a cadre of odd, but interesting abilities. (YellHelp is probably one of my favorites) and it seems as if DW3GB actually allowed a greater variation of of characters with the ability to give characters Seeds from their registration and the Personalities, I loved the Personality set up.
yay, new lp!! should I watch DW1 and 2 first or is it ok if I start with this one? thx!
@slymily yes, yes it is. I was thinking that this is a pretty graphic opening for an NES game.
I started playing this on the emulator. I played it wayyy back when. Which DW game is it where the spells are reflected back on the mobs? Was it the mirror of ra? It's kind of nostalgic to play it again hah!!
I'll be playing through this game soon and I need some advice.
Firstly, should I play GBC or SNES?
Secondly, how does this party set up sound? I'll start with a soldier, pilgrim, and mage, then once i get the book of satori, i'll change the soldier to a fighter, change the pilgrim to a soldier, and change the mage to a sage.
If you have access to the fan translation of DQ3, that would probably be higher quality than the GBC version. For your party, I would start with a Fighter to change into a Soldier, to counter their low agility growth.
Gotcha, thanks man
I know I'm late to the party, but the iOS version is pretty stunning also, and cheap.
Question: was this on Emulator or NES? When I play on Emu it gets super hard graphics glitches at top and bottom of screen.. I'd buy the NES game but i only have a Retron which may be just an emulator too...
it looks like you had a bit of the top / bottom graphics glitch but not as bad as me
This was on the NNNesterJ emulator, though I generally use Nestopia, depending on the game, nowadays.
!! I was thinking of starting this game and you start a let's play... awesome :P
YAY HAPPY MUSIC :) i know, i know, its the wrong game, and the music isnt very happy, but i just love that catch phrase
@HCBaailly what did you think about the ds remakes of 4 through six ? Can you do those next ?
Cyber punk, steam punk and rock. Rock was the word you were looking for.
4:44 Isn't it a lot better to stop the bad guy *before* he has done something bad? =P
They must have a reason to fear Baramos, so it's smarter to stop him as soon as possible instead of being like "let's wait until he causes tragedy and disaster somewhere - until then, there's nothing to worry about".
Didn't you ever get that sage's stone toward near the end of the game? The item that heals everyone?
New Let's Play! Kick-ass!
Does Dragon Warrior III have aimless wandering and a lack of direction that was ever so present in Dragon Warrior II?
If it's the iron age maybe ironpunk, I'd be surprised if there isn't a proper term floating around out there somewhere but I've never encountered it.
