Watching this series after playing Dragon Quest XI, and I love how that game retains so many elements from the original games, from the sound effects to the sleeping jingle to the title theme!
Still have my original cartridge with my battery save file. Bought it used for $10 back in the day. And I've watched this entire LP numerous times. Never gets old!
I still go back and play the NES Dragon Warrior games every now and then, and each time I end up watching HC play them afterward. I still wish he would someday jump back into the series and play 7 and beyond.
FINALLY! One of "those" games from my childhood that I remember so well. Very difficult game that kept me coming back for more. Took forever, but we finally beat it.
This was my FIRST RPG..After the first one. I LIVE THIS! And I love it too. What I really liked about DW2 IMO was that it was the most difficult of the franchise
I'm amazed at how great the Dragon Warrior/Quest games are. I've completed the first, am about to complete the second, and I have played some of the others. It's one of the few games that makes me feel like I have a sword in my hand and I'm being hit by the enemy. The old sound effects from the old games actually make me afraid for my life. The insistence on Old English text transforms the experience in a way I really wouldn't have thought possible or necessary. The graphics and even the menus launch the game into the stratosphere. Most important is the fact that I feel like I am in the world. Nothing compares with that though the rest is great. These games are amazing in that way; they're one of the few franchises that can do that kind of magic.
Is it just me, or did that demons attack in the intro sequence sound like Mewtwo's cry? Also, stupid sub box almost let me go to sleep without letting me watch the birth of a new LP! What a concept!
"Do you yearn for a challenging game, that can just stick it to you and say 'Screw you! You get to reset now. You don't deserve to live.'?" Allow me to introduce you to Ultima Exodus. "Do you want more level grinding than ever before? In RPG history?" you say? Allow me to introduce you to Dragon Warrior III, now with "Class Changes", as well as her little sister, Dragon Warrior IV, complete with multiple chapters featuring characters that all start at level 1.
Yes, I have been looking forward to this one for a long time..this is yet another nostalgic trip for me. I didn't beat this game until I was in college, but it was a constant topic of conservation on the bus in elementary..well, we didn't have cell phones so we talked about Nintendo games..that's how you found out about secrets and strategies (along with Nintendo Power)..one area in particular was talked about with hushed whispers. We'll see it when we get there..and why it was so respected.
"Take out the garbage." "NO!" "But thou must!" "That's it, I'm founding another kingdom without you!" Yet, the descendant could never find a relationship without a "But thou must" wife, so after his third kingdom, he became a hermit.
Holy cow! I can't believe this! This game looks like Mother/EarthBound Beginnings/ EarthBound Zero! I'm guessing this game must be the direct inspiration of the first Mother/EarthBound game!
Heh, I remember when I first heard the overworld theme. I heard it in a Pokemon ROM hack .3. It was a really nice theme that the ROM hacker used for the forest, and I was wondering what it was from that time. I at first thought it was from a Zelda game, but it turns out it was from Dragon Quest 2 |D
Actually, and admittedly I could be misremembering, it said in the manual that Gwealin had three children. From what I recall, the hero then divided the kingdom into three smaller ones and set one of the children as monarch of each of them.
www.woodus.com/den/gallery/graphics/dw2nes/manual/dw2nes_manual.pdf According to this, you are correct. I just thought my own interpretation of events was more amusing. :P
As much as I love the original DQ, man it sucks having a stairs and door command instead of just walking onto the stairs or pressing A in front of the door. So happy DQII improved on this
Try the gameboy color version. It has both 1 and 2 in the cart. The gameboy color version of each also has certain improvements that help with the game. Here's a spoiler. In the NES cart for this game. You can beat the Clown in the castle dungeon, and sell the bolt staff for lots of cash. In the GBC version you can't do that.
I don't remember what year it was, but I had just played through Final Fantasy 1. For Christmas, I asked for Dragon Warrior 1, not being aware of any sequel, and then I received Dragon Warrior 2. Then, a couple years later, being unaware of the release of DW4, I asked for DW3. But my parents again surpassed all of my hopes and got me DW4. I love my parents!
the battles look just like that one battle in super paper mario where you fight three chain chomps in first person. Nice episode. feels much longer when its 14 mins. better
Poor HCBailly got incredibly flustered after that heart-wrenching intro. I shouldn't say anything, though, since I react the same way when playing Phantasy Star IV...
Yeah, the scene's a little altered. First monster gets there while the king's still beside her, he slays it! Advances to the bridge, and takes out two monsters before being back stabbed by Hargon himself.
In area it is four times larger. The map in DW 1 was 128 x 128. This map is 256 x 256. However they had to shrink Alfguard to about 1/2 it's normal size.
I actually love the feeling when you level up and eventually become strong enough to continue. ^_^ I feel a lot like that in the beginning of this game, for example, when you start out as a weakling barely able to leave the castle, then 10-15 minutes later you can easily go to the next castle while also having a few Medical Herbs in stock. =D
The hardest RPG I ever played was Mother/EarthBound Zero. It takes upwards to 2 hours of level grinding when you get a new party member. It has 2 of the hardest dungeons in any game (Duncan's Factory and Mt. Itoi). And has one of the hardest final bosses EVER! I still love the game to death though. :D
@kokirielf It was originally released in Japan in 1987. Back then, video games with scenes and dialogue to advance the plot didn't exist. By the time we got DW2, they already had DQ4, which had such scenes. I would guess that when they were translating this for us, they felt that adding a prologue would give better background to the story.
Having played Earthbound Zero but not DW2 it amazes me how much those guys really did crimp off of this game. I mean aside from the enemy sprites and attack names the battle system looks IDENTICAL. Also, I really wanna see that opening scene in movie quality CG animation. Some might say that could ruin it but I just have this really vivid image in my mind on how it would look.
I don't know if you still answer on this video, but I really wanted help with an old game I played some time ago. It was just like dragon warrior but I don't remember which one was it. The beginning is in a village where the "descendent" or the "chosen one" is. The evil Lord attacks the village and the village people hid him in a basement and tell him his destiny and when everything on the surface is done we take control and when we get out everyone is dead. Then we do what we do in all games collect info and kill evil Lord.
Oh man this game was tough, really tough, and I haven't even reached that one infamous cave yet as I'm still somewhat under leveled. I can't count how many times this game have pissed me off. Oh well I will beat this game.....eventually. In the mean time, I do look forward towards your Lets Play of this tough as balls, but amazing game of Dragon Warrior/Quest 2.
"How did he pull that off?" (Founding multiple kingoms) I believe the game is set 100 years after Dragon Warrior 1. (Though I could be wrong.) So he probably had kids and the kids founded the new kingdoms.
@@HCBailly For me, calling a game "hard" encompasses a lot of things. Including just having the mental willpower to finish it. DW2 is super hard in that respect. :D
@Chronicgamer36 That's intentional. Sugiyama was already a professional composer for movies and television shows by the time he started working at Enix and purposefully included motifs from and references to earlier games in the series in the later games.
I gotta wonder what possessed Hargon to siege this particular castle? Considering he chills out in Rhone for the rest of the game, and had he not tempted the fates, he wouldn't have three descendants of Loto with a vendetta knocking down his door. All I'm saying is a little research into the king's family history would of saved the guy a lot of trouble.
I agree Dragon Warrior II was quite a challenge back when I was a kid, ah good times... Of course, now I gone down the saga games route and seen truly "different" hard RPG style, and I can't decide if dragon warrior or Saga series posed more challenges. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this awesome gem on the Nes and I will be enjoying this LP! Keep up the work!
this looks a lot like the Ultima games I grew up on. .. this one is especially like Ultima III. Looking forward to see HC getting beaten, he always makes it look so easy :)
1:55 Simple. He raised 3 kids, and each one got their castle in one empire. Then, when he died, the 3 kids each had their own kingdoms, which they built shortly before the events of this game.
Yeah but why did they get their own kingdom. I guess Erdrick was such a hero they considered him royalty. Then the children were all wedded to other royalty and ended up inheriting the kingdoms. Then it works out I guess.
"Do you yearn for a challenging game that can stick it to you and say screw you, you get to reset again?" - This sounds a lot like job interviews with most tech firms where you make it past round N then round N+1 then you get eliminated after countless rounds and fail to get an offer.
Thou has defeated thine brother of six years. Of experience thou has gained 1 anecdote and earned confinement of 1 half of 1 hour to thine room. Boyhood and conscience have served thee well, for HCBailly has been rendered the next Dragon Warrior.
So um, funny thing happened, I really like listening to and watching your lp's while I play games sometimes.... This time the game happened to be pokemon... and just as Loto leveled up near the end of the video... the pokemon in the game did as well, kinda made me smile. -3-
I always loved this game the most of all the dragon warrior games but towards the end of the game I got stuck & didn't know where to go at alli did make it too the fake castle but that was as far as I got never found the final boss
Playing through this right now... wish me luck. In all seriousness, I actually think I have made enough progress to finally watch the first episodes of this LP, this should be fun. 3:05 Heh, in the remakes they actually call him the High "Priest". The hardest RPG I've ever played is the original FF1 for the NES, probably cause I haven't played draqgon warrior, but GOD! That game was hard! I died SO many times in that game! DX
Watched all your dragon warrior lets plays as a kid, back now at 24 years old for the nostalgia and gonna watch the whole series, cheers

FINALLY! One of "those" games from my childhood that I remember so well. Very difficult game that kept me coming back for more. Took forever, but we finally beat it.
great
Those first 36 seconds are the truest thing you've ever said about any game you've LP'd.
I love how the title screen lights up when they come on screen with torches! Probably the coolest title screen on NES.
This was my FIRST RPG..After the first one. I LIVE THIS! And I love it too. What I really liked about DW2 IMO was that it was the most difficult of the franchise
I really like the narrative style of the old dragon warrior game; they had class.
Agreed, it made the game in my opinion.
I am playing Dragon Quest Builders 2, my first DQ, which is set in this game's universe, so I am finally watching this. Thank you HCB.

Hey HCBailly you forgot to say "And they will kiiiiiiill youuuu."
Looking foward to this LP, looks awesome.
Having just watched spaceballs because I couldn't find a copy of it until yesterday I now appreciate HCBailly's videos much more
I like all your LP's, but the old school GB, NES and SNES ones are by far my favorites. Can't wait to watch this series HC.
Moonbrooke is the Hauksness of Dragon Warrior 2,it's meant to show that Hargon is to be taken seriously.
Holy cow! I can't believe this! This game looks like Mother/EarthBound Beginnings/ EarthBound Zero! I'm guessing this game must be the direct inspiration of the first Mother/EarthBound game!

In that one intro, there's a kill count of 9, gosh. A bit surprising for an NES game, especially since 6 of the bodies were humans.

So, Hero from the first game conquered a vast empire, then broke it up to give heirs their own kingdoms and fiefdoms.
King Lear style.

Oh man I'm so excited about this Let's Play. I LOVE the Dragon Warrior/Quest games and I'm so glad HCBailly is doing the second game.
Nothing like snow and some classic HCBailly goodness.
lol I love when the guard says "The castle is under attack by Hargon" and all you say is "...crap." Classic!
Definitely still in my top 3 hardest RPGs of all time
Among my LPs, this is only second to Gungnir, which I consider to have "true" difficulty, compared to just more grinding required here.
@@HCBailly For me, calling a game "hard" encompasses a lot of things. Including just having the mental willpower to finish it. DW2 is super hard in that respect. :D
If that intro was American Enix, than they nailed 'cause the snes remake also has that scene
OMG! @ 4:36 when HCBailly said "you don't stand a chance", i wasn't watching a Let's Play anymore, epic beginning...
@Chronicgamer36 That's intentional. Sugiyama was already a professional composer for movies and television shows by the time he started working at Enix and purposefully included motifs from and references to earlier games in the series in the later games.

Yes. It is these games that I love to see HC Bailly play to win. And that makes me very happy. C:
@Demonfox250 Yes. It was called Dragon Warrior for 1-4 as someone had the name "Dragon Quest" already copyrighted.
Apparently the princess is called Princessa, or at least according to Fortune Street.
I agree Dragon Warrior II was quite a challenge back when I was a kid, ah good times...
Of course, now I gone down the saga games route and seen truly "different" hard RPG style, and I can't decide if dragon warrior or Saga series posed more challenges.

I know it has been awhile, but still, the king is friggin badass!
loved the story, I got a copy of Jet Force Gemini when my brother threw me into a wall, totally worth the bloody nose in hindsight.
this looks a lot like the Ultima games I grew up on. .. this one is especially like Ultima III. Looking forward to see HC getting beaten, he always makes it look so easy :)
Time for the yearly rewatch of this series!
Oh yeah, in the GB version Midenhall is called Lorasia, so I think Erdrick/Loto stayed with the "But Thou Must" princess
Brutally murdered, by which you mean, making him flash a bunch, and then making his sprite flip 90 degrees. xD
Wow, I never knew that "many years" are enough for whole generations to live in it. :o
And Hooray for a new LP! \o/

I love this game. HCBailly commentating it makes my day!
I am going to have to go play this now!
Finally the hardest rpg ever.
I sense death...
Intro... it was pretty good for a NES game (1990)
Spaceballs reference... WIN!
"Do you yearn for a challenging game that can stick it to you and say screw you, you get to reset again?" - This sounds a lot like job interviews with most tech firms where you make it past round N then round N+1 then you get eliminated after countless rounds and fail to get an offer.
I love that tongue tie towards the beginning xD
In the snes version i dont think the monster attacks the princess at all, I could be wrong though...
This intro was kinda cooler than the GB version. That's so not fair!
god I love the hub world theme
I don't doubt you that this game has a lot of grinding required, but nothing can compare the grinding required in the Disgaea games.
First time I played this I didn't know how to use the Equip command. Three slimes were able to kill me unless I got really lucky!
Is this or Final Fantasy 1 the first one to have more than just one on one battles

@canceresbunny No, stat gains are fixed per level, but your name does affect something else. I'll mention it in the next episode.
I always loved this game the most of all the dragon warrior games but towards the end of the game I got stuck & didn't know where to go at alli did make it too the fake castle but that was as far as I got never found the final boss

12:00 Thanks for sharing! Yeah me and my bro also had a lot of misunderstandings with my parents at the time too.
Jeez, what an excellent intro for an old nes game.
Loved the Spaceballs reference!
Does this game have more level grinding than Mother 1??
Being the prince of a kingdom, you'd think he'd have more money available to him other than 50 gold and a copper sword.
YARG!!! You say it how it is Bailly. I've never beaten DW2 XD
It is also one of the hardest, if not THE hardest RPG I've ever played too.
04:20 "Well, that's what happens when you build a castle in a desert..."
Yeah, tell King Figaro about it :P
6:20 "I art getting to old for this shite."
Aw yeah! Dragon Warrior II! My personal favorite LP from you, or well anybody, was the LP of Dragon Warrior, so I have high hopes for this LP. Don't let me down man!
@RaxusCarnelli spot on
at lvl 1, why it takes me 4 hits to kill a slime and 1 for you?
The hardest RPG I've ever played is the original FF1 for the NES, probably cause I haven't played draqgon warrior, but GOD! That game was hard! I died SO many times in that game! DX
HCbailly whats the easiest RPG in your opinion?
Must be great to have 15 minutes as the limit, especially for LP players.
hardest rpg
pools of radiance for commodore 64
excellent 14:42 of HCBailly goodness =]
@StressTheSky You can save, but you might as well reset to keep your gold. I was exaggerating the difficulty of the game, but not by much.
The new evil wants to, you guessed it, take over the world.
OF COURSE!!!
In the opening, the middle guy reminds me of the main character of Deadly Towers
I love these types of intros you do :D
it said that the DESENDANTS of the warrior founded he kingdoms, not the single warrior alone.
