I love the (completely unreasonable) idea that the person who provided the multiplayer footage is like an indie game dev and after being pressed by trey they frantically developed the multiplayer mode from the ground up in order to get the footage they provided
I love the fact that no one cared enough for like 20 years to record any footage of the mode. If you didn't went through all this, this would have genuinely been lost media at some point considering how fragile cdi-s are. Anyways, great video!
Well, not necessarily. The game's been dumped online, so even if every single CDi breaks there's always the possibility of CDi emulation just getting good enough for the mode to work.
I love the fact that reddit is sort of the chekhov’s gun of the video lol. Introduced in the first like 30 seconds, ends up becoming super important later
this video actually ended up being really meta. having to debunk your own assumptions from a video you've already finished editing, and then including that in the video itself, is apparently very fun to watch!
as someone who goes down these kinds of insanely obscure rabbit holes all the time, i really appreciate your dedication to editing it into an entertaining video.
It looks like the CD-I was created similarly to the 3DO in that there was a minimum required spec, but different CD-i players could add various extra features, like additional controller ports. I’m assuming the firmware that you used for the emulator was dumped from a player with only one controller port, like the one responder’s. It wouldn’t surprise me if the game could tell it was running in a player with one controller port, and so it wouldn’t even entertain the idea of letting you play the mode. I’m curious as to whether the manual might specify as such.
I have the same nostalgia for Pac Attack from the gameboy advance port that Trey does and I’m honestly psyched to see all of these Pac Attack videos. One of those games that was always weirdly compelling and a little mysterious to me, so it’s great to see it getting some love
I honestly never thought I would care about Pac Attack, until you started uploading again. Amazing watches about a subject I don't even have an interest in 😂
The difficulty select sprites make me wonder if at some point they were working on porting Pac-Man 2 The New Adventures to the CDi... I would pay to see that world.
I'm pretty sure this happens with a physical N64 with Fzero as well, so my first thought when you couldn't select it was that the option was disabled until physical second control was hooked up, so the console might be doing some kind of hardware check that the emulator isn't considering.
i wonder if there was a different bios for cdis with 2 controller ports and cdis with just 1? the zip you showed *was* named cdi**mono** after all i feel like that would be why it's not working
Another banger from the world's #1 Pac-Attack UA-camr. Loving this stuff. Thank you for going the extra mile to avoid misinformation; it's way too easy to fall into rabbit holes like this when information about the game is so scarce due to it being on a rare piece of HW. Same thing's been happening to me while trying to find the speed at which 2v2 vs Memorial runs on the X68000 which has been a real mess. Congrats on your new patreon sub :)
0:20 Did you actually just give us a free tutorial to get CD-i Pac Panic working?? Seriously though, I hope there'll be a more accessible resource now after your pain and suffering for game preservation and all that 😏
as soon as it was mentioned the cd-i that tested this only had 1 port, my suspicion was that it only works when 2 controllers are plugged and your emu wasn't doing that properly
@@logansmith2703 I wouldn't say "obvious", moreso it was specifically the fact that some models only have 1 physical port (which most people including myself wouldn't know) that tipped me off
Perhaps the cdi's with only one controller port are internally very different then the two controller cdis. The emulator may only be emulating the one player cdi version or something like that.
My first console was the Philips CD-I. I remember I had a Busy Town game for it, which was fun as a young kid. After it broke I got an N64 with Super Mario 64 for Christmas, and it totally blew my mind. Great video man, it brings back some fun memories! I'm still in awe of your SMS skills! 👍
It's so bittersweet to watch videos like this because it's so ludicrously obscure that nobody will ever want to watch it, but I am nobody, and I absolutely live for weird video game lore.
Is the 114 level cap thing just emulation as well? I can't think of any simple programming reason why 114 would be a cap of any sort. No binary reasons anyways, like 256 (0 is 1, 255 is 256) being the maximum value for an 8 bit 1111 1111. I'm not sure how the CD-i handles things, but if it's 32 bit and they built this version using any of the 16 bit versions as a base.. I'm not sure how 114 would become a level cap especially since the game clearly keeps track outside of that specific display when recording your high score. I'm interested to know, games kept track of scores well above 255 for a long time before they were able to count higher than 8 bits, which lead to some math errors, just look at Super Mario World, the point calculation at the end of a level seldom calculates correctly.
There's multiple ways to connect a second controller to CD-i. Some models have a physical second port (on the back) and the other way is by using a splitter / multi tap. I bet that whatever method was implemented for the emulator was not supported by the game.
The most fun about this video is how moder youtubers do research. I would have contacted the people in the staff roll and ask about it, or just go to the video game museum nearby I know has a massive CDi collection and just test it. Never do videos on the CDi if you don't have a true B&O Avant TV with built in CDi player I guess.... Oh and about the sound, it looks like it is just a Game Gear OST port, the GG has that crappy 4 channel stereo separation. Let's bash it! We never did that when the Amiga sounded ass like this....
Does anyone have any idea why the level count glitches at 114? I wouldn't be surprised if that happened at 128 or 256, but 114 is a kinda odd number for that to happen
I love the (completely unreasonable) idea that the person who provided the multiplayer footage is like an indie game dev and after being pressed by trey they frantically developed the multiplayer mode from the ground up in order to get the footage they provided

Trey is slowly but surely becoming a full-time Pac-Attack UA-camr
Pac-Attuber
I hope that someday, Pac-Attack and Pac-Panic combine to create "Panic Attack"
I laughed, _so hard_
Pac-Pac Panic Attack?
I love the fact that reddit is sort of the chekhov’s gun of the video lol. Introduced in the first like 30 seconds, ends up becoming super important later
this video perfectly encapsulates the highs and lows of the reddit community
Happy soup day!
this video actually ended up being really meta. having to debunk your own assumptions from a video you've already finished editing, and then including that in the video itself, is apparently very fun to watch!
Your reward for getting Godhand in this version is lotsa spaghetti
The Sherlock Holmes part was super fun tbh. The happy cake day bit had me dying.
I don't think words can explain how much I laughed at the Happy Cake Day message
as someone who goes down these kinds of insanely obscure rabbit holes all the time, i really appreciate your dedication to editing it into an entertaining video.
2:39 This is apparent on the SNES version of Pac-Attack too. Hence why Pac-Man Museum + separates high score leaderboards by difficulty for that game.
4:13 lmao mike matei brown bricks reference made me start laughing

I had it for the gbc I didn't realize it got a gba release
Thrilling pac mysteries

Funny af, amazing how interesting looking into obscure vidya info can be
as soon as it was mentioned the cd-i that tested this only had 1 port, my suspicion was that it only works when 2 controllers are plugged and your emu wasn't doing that properly
Yeah that felt kinda obvious
@@logansmith2703 I wouldn't say "obvious", moreso it was specifically the fact that some models only have 1 physical port (which most people including myself wouldn't know) that tipped me off
I assume you made sure to keep that in the back of your mind until the big reveal? :^)
so wait it didn't work on an emulator and he's claiming it "doesn't exist" because of that? what a fucking clown.
The home console versions of Pac-Attack and Sega Game Gear Pac-Attack are the best versions of Pac-Attack.
actually deleting your reddit account for a video is next level dedication, awesome video :D
what a wild ride. pac attack defends its title as... uh... one of the top 10 cd-i games... lol
I'm glad you didn't spread misinformation on the internet. Thanks to your efforts the internet remains misinformation -free.

Your videos are always a joy to watch. Keep em coming!
Im glad we get to watch trey's descent into pacman madness in real time
I saw "happy cake day" coming from a mile away, but I still laughed
2023 has been a big year for Pac Attack.
Thanks for your continued appreciation for the game man. One of these days I gotta hop on a stream of this.
I sincerely hope to one day, finally become, an Official Friend of Pacman (™)
I was very intrigued by this Pac mystery. Thank you for solving it, Sherlock Trey.
sherlock is BACK BABY
You're super funny and engaging, you earned a new subscriber!

I am fully devoted to this pacattack arc
That redditor was awesome for doing that.
You earnt a sub for deleting your reddit account
My guy Trevor can't stop winning

Yo wtf never knew about this

more pac attack content, its all i could have ever asked for and more! yippee! super interesting video, i love to see weird ports like this
how can this not exist when I've literally played it, seen others play it, and seen it in the wild?
this video was so good I might just have a pac-panic pac-attack
Dude. Can we just appreciate the bald + beard combo?? Majestic af
1:50 Clicking activated a Wix commercial.
and this is why real hardware is important!
A story for the ages
I felt that "happy cake day" to my core

Fun to watch video :)
Nice of Pac-Man to invite us over for a picnic, eh Luigi?

Reddit isn't helpful, retroarch doesn't work well... yeah, I mean the sky is blue.
i thoguht my headphones broke again from this video
The cake was not a lie after all
BOMBS?!?!?
Pac panic really won't let you fool them with the multiplayer. Happy cake day
I like “workening”! Good word! 😂
The Pac Man sprites at 1:43 come from Pac Man 2
Pac-Attack is consuming his soul
Omg happy cake day, Trey!!
holy shit is that THE AshumBesher?? 13:15
Gotta love Pac-Attack
tsk tsk tsk, Trey didn't you know you're supposed to put Exposed in all caps?
Happy cake day!

what a legend
the beard scared me 0:25

maybe it's because the game was running when you connected the second controller
BAD CAKE DAY!!!
This port has beautiful visuals, I think I like them better than the genesis version
I'm so sorry that you're also from Kansas
1:14 this isn't exclusive to pac panic, I played hotel mario and it had the same problem
PAC-ATTACK HOUR LFG
I love pac attack
This may just be an issue on my end but the waltvs link in the description links to the wrong Waltvs
maybe the bios you got for the emulator was that of a CD-i with one controller port?
I like your content Trey
On the subject of firmware. I know fuck all about CD-i but maybe it's specifically because you need firmware from a model of CD-i that has two ports?
please don't stop talking about pac attack
pac-manulation
maybe you needed two controllers for it to work? oh wait, more video to go.
Woo, I was right!
Feel free to never stop talking about pac attack
dude for a second there i thought you said asgard-ish instead of ass-garbage what
I'm glad I checked this one out LOL Great work Trey.
you just have to enter the password and it works!! it was there all the time!
pw:
HAPPY CAKE DAY
Spagetti
My guess is that you were using the bios of a one controller port console.
It's a good game!!
The CD-i with one controller port is just a bad emulator for a CD-i with two controller ports and that's why it wasn't working
Trey full up schizo posting, at least adding a 1950s TV addition at the end.
