Had one of the best rides of my life because of this instruction. Thank you, thank you! Portrait and I attracted a little audience of lesson kids, one which shouted out, "Well ridden!" 😂 as we leg yielded in the corner at the canter, straightened, got amazing connection, and rode two beautiful 15m circles. ❤️ Felt amazing!
Amazing video. Thank you so much Alicia. You had painstakingly explained the steps and the science behind good horsemanship. Where I live (in Malaysia) horse ownership is a luxury. I'm a beginner rider and not having your own horse poses certain challenges as riding on different horses for training does not help to expedite the learning curve. Love your videos and hope to come to Australia soon to get some training from you ❤
Alecia you really are amazing!! Incredibly informative, so thankyou! You have such a natural ability to translate complex concepts into practical, workable & understandable steps, relevant to all levels. You speak so intuitively, it all just rolls out of mouth, & every video is jam-packed with useful information that you freely share with such infective enthusiasm. Never experienced another teacher/trainer so valuable as you! 🧡 YRS!! Thankyou 🐴🙏
Loved the leg yield explanation. I am training a green broke horse so most of the time she falls in or out. My understanding from this video is that when she falls out doing LY to the left, I could help her to balance with a LY to the right (change direction) kind of a zigzag using LY, so that she has all four feet on the ground equally (balanced).
Hi Juanita - yes that is right but remember (especially with a young horse) than an easier exercise to begin with would be to ride straight ahead when she loses balance and then try another step, then when she loses balance ride straight again. Good luck!
So pleased I came across you guy's I have a better understanding of why my horse has been stuck! Thanks and really appreciate the time you put into explaining everything 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Another brilliantly delivered educational video. You are truly amazing at explaining the logistics of the movement and how it can help in each scenario. Loved it. 😊
This is awsome. Ive always used leg yeild and new the importance in training but you have made this another lvl, and also made me understand more why its so important and what its actuality doing to improving things. I did this excercise today with my boy and its the most happily supple I've felt him and engaged then our canter work was so much better afterwards as well. 😊
So helpful and well explained. I've been using the wiggly serpentine in my last couple of schooling sessions. It's a revelation! I've only ever done serpentines the 'test' way but the wiggly way is so great for suppleness - it's helped me already. Can't wait for the next video!
I only just started watching your videos but I’m loving them! One question, what does “no message” mean? I’m sure it’s in some other video but haven’t gotten to it yet. Thanks!
I think I finally get it. I went and tried a bit of leg yield at the walk today, on and off the fence and I could see my mares footprints in the snow. She got it, I had been demanding too steep a diagonal for our combined ability. But when I asked for a more shallow leg yield she was more than happy to comply, only when I asked for a steep yield did everything fall apart. I am starting to think that might be my overall issue; I’m expecting big flashy movements instead of feeling those slight changes and accepting the try.

Super cute, fun and that banana dressage is out of this world🤣👌🍌I have been trained in a classical way with super snob 🤭 teacher that was an absolute idiot I realized after 6 months that I knew more about riding horses than him🤣🤣🤣. Thanks to reading the classical dressage masters I could make a huge turn over on my riding and that idiot teacher took the credits of my quick evolution to him😅😆 even my sister's that does not know anything about dressage noticed that the guy was an idiot full of himself. Your channel is super fun and cute. Dressage should be fun and enjoyable. Keep up the good work. And a huge thank you for sharing this with us. It makes all sense 🤗🤗🤗
Hi from France Alicia, Thank you so much for these clear explanations. You help me a lot in my daily work with my horse especially to find the exercise that will get you to the result that you want without fighting with the horse.. I just have one question : I am able to supple my horse on the basics exercices. But the judges keep writing “activity/impulsion/expression” on my test papers. So my coach (that I see once a month) tells me to ask more with my legs without altering the rythm (so basically receive in the hands to prevent the horse from going faster) . And when I do that, my horse (Iberian) start to show some tensions in her mouth (chattering her teeths etc). So I really struggle between impulsion and suppleness. Do you have some tips about that please ? Thank you very much and keep doing what you’re doing, you’re helping the dressage community a lot 😇🤗
Hi there!! Super question! When the judges write words like this they are trying to encourage you to ask the horse to be in an improved balance due to increased engagement from the hind quarters. So what does that mean!!! Have a look at this video on the Training Scale Part 2 (Impulsion, Straightness and Collection) ua-cam.com/video/mUbUgwdJbUM/v-deo.html This video should give you some more ideas on how to keep progressing up the training scale but please if you have ANY questions after watching, keep asking questions until you understand it xxx
Hi Cheryl! So glad you have enjoyed the series! This is a super question! Going more into the bridle is another way of talking about the horse taking the contact or being connected (on the bit) x
Is it normal for a horse to be able to do leg yields better on one rein & they find it harder on the other rein? Found her right rein so much easier than the left rein when trying these supplement exercises after ur advice on the live yesterday ❤️
This video is so helpful! Thank you! My mare is leaning badly/falling to the left and not giving me a left bend equal to what she gives on the right. I think she struggles with stretching her right side and shifting her weight onto the right. Other than leg yields what exercises could you recommend to get her more “even” in her body?
Hi Laura, great question! The biggest thing to consider is that your goal is have a horse that is equally even on both sides so all the time you ride work on the opposite of what the horse wants to do until you even up the body. So in your instance, when going left ride leg yield on the circle, shoulder fore and in, travers and then when riding to the right use counter flexion, loops off the wall and back with left flexion and renvers. Over time the horse will become even it just takes time - like us going to yoga or the gym! Let me know how you go!
Love your videos, always super helpful. As a novice rider how do you sit in the inside of the banana, I struggle as my horse is unbalance and tends to lean in when doing circle I feel like I have to lean on the other side to help him balance.
Hi there, as said below, try going back a step and ensure you can keep the horse on the "train tracks" on a more simple line and only increase the difficulty of the circle as much as what you can control the horses shoulders and keep them from falling in or out on the line. This will help you to stay more in control of your balance. Also try working on some pilates out of the saddle to ensure you have the stability and control of your own body to be able to sit where needed in the saddle ua-cam.com/video/BR0qkZy0sbQ/v-deo.html ✨
Oh love love love these 3 videos!! They're helping me so much with my horse! And love it shows everything! I don't know how Alicia moves Gee's qtrs in and out? Is her banana changing? Is it with leg? Thank you
Hi Jenni, when Alicia is on the circle and changing between leg yield and working pirouette, her banana is changing and the biggest thing she changes is her weight. So in the leg yield her right hip would be back if she was on a right circle and in working pirouette her right hip would be forward - in both her weight is to the inside. Her legs in leg yield are inside leg at the girth, working pirouette is inside leg at girth and outside leg behind girth. Try pausing the video when she is doing it and really see where her body is. Hope this helps! 💕
When I’m teaching my OTTB to leg yeild, is the best way to do just one step of a leg yeild at a time and gradually introduce more steps? He understands it on the ground, but in the saddle when moving forward I think trying to go from the centre line to the wall is just too much for him.
Great question Sarah! When you are first introducing the leg yield under saddle you want to set your horse up for success so if you can only do a step of leg yield to start with that is ok! You can build up to introducing more steps x
More gait transitions.. make sure you always ask with a light aid first.. then reinforce that light aid.. don't nag with your aids... make sure you release your hand a tiny fraction as you ask for gait change. The first reinforcement is a stronger calf.. if it takes a second try ask with the light aid and the reinforcement will be very strong leg with heel (or spur if you are able to apply it correctly)... the third reinforcement may need to be the whip.. or an assistant on the ground.. just be sure that ANY reaction for more forward is to be rewarded by leaving him alone for a few strides.. then come back to lower gait and repeat..
Hi Rach, as said below the biggest thing is to not nag the horse, ask always lightly and then use a quicker aid that the horse can not ignore. Try to think of "quick" rather than big and slow x
Great explanation, thank you!! I have a question…! When you sit on the inside of the banana, do you find you actually step harder on the inner stirrup?
Hi there, think a little about the dressage tests, the leg yield, shoulder in, renver and traver all come before Half Pass. All these exercises give you the suppleness and control of the shoulders that you will need for Half Pass. Check you have these movements in a good way before trying then start with an easy line (not too sharp in angle) and head back towards the wall, most important is the shoulders stay on the diagonal line xx
I don’t know what a working pirouette is? Also, you show with the banana “half pass” - and you show it goes diagonally across and then you say “leg yield” and you motion horizontally across, I’m confused because the leg yield when you do it on the horse is also going diagonally across the arena, not horizontally? Can you please explain that ?
Michelle! They are all really great questions. Im going to answer that is a video, because it is worth it! Ive lost my voice today.... but i will do in the next few days. Also, we can discuss more indepth in our DMA session! Ps its Alicia here! xx

How early in the horse training can you start introducing leg yield on a circle?

Most importantly before starting this you want to make sure your horse is able to maintain relaxation and rhythm on bending lines (circles) with an even contact.
