He's looking so much better! And I agree, turnout is an often overlooked, but very important factor for bringing on any horse. Is that a magnetic band he's wearing on his hind fetlock towards the start of the video?

Percy looks great :) good quality hay is everything but here, it’s rare since our soils are so poor so no choice to supplement! Wish I had good grass all year long hehe
How do you address a SUPER reactive OTTB that just can't get out of their head?
taylorist make sure they’re getting enough turnout and then do a lot of ground work using positive reinforcement to introduce stuff they’re afraid of and help with building trust
Karen Reed Yep! But most people typically do that right off the track so depending on when they got the horse it likely would’ve already let down
Taylorist - my OTTB mare was like that - super reactive to the bit and my seat. So much so that she would completely tune out me and my seat, while she focused all her attention on the bit. I noted that when lunging with side reins, she would naturally bend and give herself slack on the inside contact. That translated to me keeping a steady rein length/contact with the bit, and again only using seat (and voice) to control her. That definitely made all the difference - once I stopped “chasing her head” and focused on tempo and forward she naturally reached for the bit and started working the correct muscles. Trail riding helped a lot as well to build muscle and strength our partnership. We usually used an English hackamore on trail, but quickly realized it’s potential under saddle. Now we ride mainly with the hackamore, and she’s now relaxed at all gaits and getting better the more she builds those muscles and stamina. Wish you all the best with your OTTB!
Shelby has done a fabulous job showing how OTTBs need time to fill out, gain weight & muscle, socialize, and time to figure out how to move their bodies in their new discipline! Slow and steady is great with the young OTTBs...

I loved this video! It's so wonderful to see the transformation that you (and your co-owner) are able to bring to these horses. Patience, practice, relaxation (I love how well you emphasize the importance of turn-out and horses just being together being horses is to each animals' happiness, development and overall outlook changes over time). You have clearly fine-tuned your approach and tools with the OTTB and you do it with such kindness and consistency; always having the best interest of each horse at the center of all that you do. It is wonderful to see how quickly you make progress with these guys. I hope it is as gratifying to you as it is to see unfold in your videos. He is a very compact horse. His improvements are highly noticeable even to someone who doesn't have that much hands on experience with horses.
As someone from New England, that Western Alfalfa looks like GOLD. We would sell our souls to be able to afford that type of hay out here, ha. Percy is looking great, Shelby.

Bodybuilder is great stuff. I used to work for a thoroughbred breeder and we would use it to add weight to the sale horses before we took them to the sales. You’re right that it doesn’t make them hot; I’ve never seen it do that to any horse, which was especially important when feeding some of our spicy yearlings, namely the colts. Plus, it makes their coats beautifully smooth and shiny. Any rice bran oil/rice bran emulsion is great stuff.

Percy had an impressive body change when you put him on the Body Support along with your corresponding good hay. What a difference for an OTTB! He canters beautifully now, left and right. He knows you love him and he tries to please you. Wonderful training vid! :-D

I just used the plank analogy the other day. I have never heard anyone say it that way before, that’s exactly what came to mind when I was explaining it...I also added that it takes time to build up holding it with a person on your back!

I love your work with your horses, and it's so inspirational and informative watching your videos. What is Percy's Jockey club name? And do you have any tips for working with a super hot and easily distracted Arab? She gets really in her head and lets her anxiety take over. She is turned out 24/7 and gets daily turn out with other horses too and gets minimal amounts of grain.
Marianne Szo It’s Gabi’s Bay Bae. And I’d recommend doing some ground work and start using positive reinforcement to pique her interest and get her focused on you.
I found that linen oil, beet pulp, and alfafa helped a ton with fat and weight gain in the ottbs I looked after. I didn't know the supplement you mentioned, what are the main ingredients?
(Of course the food I mentioned was fed along nice hay and grain.)
Purina pure athlete is an amazing high fat supplement that’s proven to help top line. I take Standardbreds off the track and is a staple in all their diets. Soooo worth the money!

Where did you get your bridle from? Great job by the way been watching your videos, rescued a young filly with a knee injury she was no good for racing I took the time vetting etc to heal her up just starting her back into work after a long let down and her leg healing, not lame or sore at all

Anna_Equestrian work with him on the ground and introduce vocal cues for getting him to move out and forward. If you praise him for this on the ground and make it more fun and pleasant using scratches and treats he will probably be more receptive under saddle

If my horses are on a grass field do I need to give hay? I usually just feed hay cubes and complete grain soaked in the evening and the rest of the day they are on grass field that is fairly long and they are always grazing they all seem to have a good coat and not under weight other then my 2 year old but that's only a little ribs at serten angles that I am working on ( I do feed hay all winter, fall, and usually spring when there is little or no grass I live in Canada so there isnt always grass early in the year)

Hello shelby, I am thinking of buying a thouroughbred. She was raced a couple of times a few years ago but wasnt up to speed so was used as a hacker and bit of xc since. She is 6, nice natured and kids can ride her they said. But I wondered, would you think they could be more likely to bolt than other horses? Given their racing past?thanks

My horse likes to stick her nose in the dirt while bridleless, and pulling on the rope doesn’t help, suggestions?
Blocktopia8 My horse used to do the same thing, this is what I did. Put the bridle and neck rope on. You can can tie your reins in a knot so that they don’t fall, however, keep them in reach of your hands. Try to mainly use the neck rope, but whenever your horse tries to stick her nose in the dirt, use your reins. When she stops sticking her face in the dirt with your reins, take them away but keep the actual bridle part on so that they thing you’re reins are still there. If she is still good with no reins. you can be completely bridle less! Hope this helps!!
Note: Lounging might help. Also groundwork with the neck rope might help as well:)
My horse has 24 hour turnout with shelter available when he wants, but he’s still a super spicy boy when I get on 😭 🌶

How did you teach him to pick up correct leads?
Equine Design Most of the racehorses have a general concept of leads and only really swap them due to lack of balance so by gaining the necessary balance and flexibility they have a much easier time catching the correct lead in the arena

I think your stirrups are too short. As they get lower it helps your center of gravity and you don’t post so high. You end up with more leg and better contact

My horse was a dressage horse, before I got him, but he was skinny and had no muscle and back problems....
He has now more weight and muscles and his back is fine,as is his paddle, but every time I ride him, he'll either stopp after 15 minutes or run without me able to control him. Any tips for me?🙈😞

I'm no expert, but I'd say to try and find out why he either stops or runs uncontrolably. Are you sure all of the tack is fit? Is there anything that puts pressure that maybe he's okay with at first but then it gets too much... I dunno, something like that. If you can find out why you can go from there, trying to fix the problem. You could also see if someone or yourself can do some training with him, to make him stop doing that everytime. You could try different tack, like bits and saddle pads, and work on making the horse listen, and of course reward him when he's doing right. :)
