@@lucasbell4831 Yes, he did some shenanigans with his knife. So I guess this is bad, but not enough to call him the worst villain in gaming. This title should be given to EA obviously.

I felt that , partly because there is that scene in the main game where you lose your fingers and you just aren't convinced that the devs will let you leave unscathed in the dlc...
What I hate the most is how many people are turning Eddie into this 'cute soft boy that never did anything wrong' Like, yeah, he didn't deserve getting abused and turned into a lab rat, but he isn't a soft boy...

As a blind person, this is the first outlast video to actually scare me, your description of the events happening on screen really makes me imagine them as if I saw them in front of me, thank you so much for this terrifying yet great video
There's actually unused dialogue where Eddie alludes to the child abuse and swears to Waylan that nothing like that would happen to 'our babies.' Also just before he's trapped in the machine, he screams that the guards are going to rape him.
You know, after one of the guards LICKING Waylon after strapping him inside the morphogenic engine, I believe Eddie when he said that about the guards 😢

Some years back, I read somewhere on some tumblr(?) post that the reason why male players had such a visceral reaction to Gluskin was because they were experiencing what it felt like to be in the shoes of a woman who was stalked, harassed, and attacked by a misogynistic man. Gluskin is always calling the player darling and trying to love bomb you one moment then demeaning you the next until flipping out violently because you're "rejecting" his advances.
Not to mention subject to more systemic forms of misogyny like getting put through surgery that you have no say in, constantly told that there's something off about your look that you need to fix, you are forced to endure the violence women experience on a daily level.
No, I have such a visceral Reaction to this Character because he wants to Cut off my Dick. This part is quite sensitive. Extremely to be precise. I would rather be gutted by the Cannibal or ripped apart be the big man than stabbed down there.
The Groom is easily one of the sickest and most disturbing characters I've ever seen in a video game. Flamboyant psychopaths like him are the reason Outlast is so memorable.
This man's voice actor KNOCKED it out of the park. It was incredibly creepy when I first entered that area and heard him singing. The whole bit was disgusting, frightening, horrifying, terror inducing, and ultimately sad, especially when I found his file.
You did Eddie Gluskin justice with this video. Not many horror game enthusiasts talk about him (it’s for the best lol). Him and WAU are one of the best and underrated fictional horror game antagonist/villain imo
outlast whistleblower is what any dlc should look to be adding to the story without interfering with the main story (miles and waylen were still seperate even tho they were fighting for their lives at the same time) and isn't a cash grab and for me personally sexual crimes are way more horrid and horrible than violent crimes which is why sexual criminals and people who do vile sexual acts I consider to be the most sick of people which is what eddie perfectly captures and he taps into a sexual fear not many horror genres do these days (mostly because of how much of a taboo and inappropriate topic it is relative to violent acts)
True, but ranking crimes as “worst” than others, which can be equally as bad, creates a hierarchy. Especially when it comes to its victims and/or family (esp when involving children of any type of crime). All crimes, except maybe things like petty theft, are horrible and can be traumatic to its victims. It shouldn’t be a competition. I think that’s one of the things I most disliked as being a csa/cocsa survivor. What happened to me? Other victims of different serious crimes should be given the same amount of respect and awareness. Nothing more, nothing less. No “there’s special evil” mindset. Their and my perp(s) should equally all seen as the pos they are.
@@bimates2690 I agree with that point of view regarding crimes, each crime is horrible and shouldn't be ranked by awfulness, the only things that should differentiate the treatment of the criminals are the victims they create, those that create more victims should be treated worse though none are innocent or 'better' than another of the criminals.
I praised Eddie to my brother when we both played Outlast, saying: "He is the kind of villain that makes a man feel what a woman feelss". On this same topic, I don't know if he'd be less or more terrifying if there were female inmates in Mount Massive.
@@jacej355 Human rights and justice are still a thing. There is why Norway is more progressive in terms of justice and their treatment of criminals. Norway has a belief of rehabilitation. They still give human rights, but loss of some freedoms, to inmates. Regardless, of what they done. Because the focus is on rehabilitation. So, if they return to society, they can be productive members of society. Instead, of repeating the cycle.
What makes Eddie so frightening is the fate that awaits you if he catches you. Forced into a butchered sex change operation that will only fail so he can sate his twisted delusions is downright chiling.
It doesn't help that he's only doing that to inmates and patients because he's EXTREMELY misogynistic, and wants to kill women, which explains why he's so quick to start calling you a whore or a slut if you run from him.

Glad I'm not the only one who made the connection to Aliens just now! From how I see it, both Eddie and the xenomorph target men and assault them, turning the victims into husks of their former selves (literally).
That was honestly the only thing I could think of while watching this along with his backstory. In general a lot of people have Grooms back story. I know five people irl including myself with his similar backstory and someone was a guy. Yet when we see the statistics that pent up aggression and hate isn't directed upon the men that hurt them but other women and children. So Groom's reaction sadly is a pretty common accurate reaction too. The only thing that puzzles me though, he doesn't have a fear or is wary of other men but I guess everyone to him is a to soon be wife/woman.
@@LamaeVeres-vb4jtthat's misogyny for you, society highlights male heroes and not female heroes all the time even historical figures they make almost everything about men so while they portray women as the reason for anything evil basically so even tho most s3rial k1llers with bad childhoods in real life were ab4sed by their fathers they always target women maybe because women are more vulnerable but mostly because they blame them for not saving them while the women themselves are in position of power
Playing the dlc and seeing him for the first time made me absolutely terrified, like I have never been scared of a character that much, hearing his voice singing through the halls behind you as he chased you is one of the most bone chilling experiences I’ve ever experienced in gaming. During the part where he dragged you in the locker I was panicking because I wanted to be no where near this man and when I saw the table saw, my heart dropped instantly, I almost puked multiple times watching that grotesque scene. What also scares me the most about him is the fact that he has such a warped sense of reality that compels him to do these absolutely horrific acts for “love” is just utterly bone chilling. One of the most haunting characters in gaming in my opinion, thank you for shedding more light on him.
Avarge "eunuch maker" experience of the UK (Comes out sending your kids to an alleyway for "gender affirmation" ends up with 1 dude mutilating more than a thousand kids)
Love Outlast so much. Gluskin being in the DLC only is pretty ironic and comical because he’s the most disturbed and vile objectively, gosh this game series is amazing. Great video as well❤
Avarge UK transitioning experience (The "eunuch maker" case. Who knew sending your kids to an alleyway to "affirm their gender" ended with over a thousand kids getting mutilated)
Father Martin’s my favorite character because during my horrifying playthrough he’s the only person who genuinely looks out for you 😭. We came to see the horrors of the asylum and he gave us exactly what we asked for 💀
I get how insane and grotesque Eddie is once he is free from the engine, but I personally think he isn't the most "vile" villain in the game. That title belongs to Richard Trager. Before and after the engine, that guy was just a full blown, A grade scum bag. Obviously not excusing Eddies horrific crimes, they are absolute nightmare fuel. But if we are digging into the history of each character and what they were like before and after the morphogenic engine, Trager definitely takes the cake.
I think it's worth considering that the Groom is one of the few villains in gaming that targets men this way, a masculine figure who threatens to violate the protagonist and subject both him and the (presumably male) player to an experience they typically never have to worry about or can feel disconnected from. Which is not to downplay the horror invoked, of course, quite the contrary.
Mount Massive Asylum = Arkham Asylum Chris Walker = Killer Croc Father Martin = Deacon Blackfire The Twins = Tweedledee and Tweedledum Richard Trager = The Joker The Walrider = The Batman Rudolf Wernicke = Hugo Strange Jeremy Blaire = Jeremiah Arkham Frank Manera = Cornelius Stirk Dissociative Dennis = Two-Face Eddie Gluskin = Professor Pyg
@bigboyskater-koi True. But Chris being disfigured and being in the sewers gives me more Killer Croc Vibes. Bane is more of an intelligent mastermind and less of a simple minded monster villain. Croc and Chris are also smarter than they seem but not like Bane. The Twins could alternativly be Mr. Hammer and Sickle as well.
he truly is the best because he past any point of redemption but he still has a sympathetic backstory. like a couple other outlast villains- like, the scariest thing about any of these villains is that they were all normal children once, and life events and events inside that asylum are what turned them into these full on pyschos. prompting the idea that anyone could become this, it isnt some rarity- anyone can be pushed to these points of breaking
@@JosefinaQB no more so he was a corrupt murkoff businessman (I forget what his job was in company but it was high ranking ) who was “close associates” with Jeremey Blair’s mount massive asylum director. We don’t really know much about him before that incident but we can assume since he a murkoff employee, he was already morally bankrupt.
It fits perfectly bc first, it is stated that the arkham asylum is much darker than what Batman see. I personally think you playing as an inmate in arkham is much better than as a regular civilians.
At 18:00 I have a name for that variant throughout my playthroughs he's the "Chad Varient" because it either takes one insane or one exceptionally brave motherfucker to do what he did, may he be remembered.
I remember starting Outlast for Eddie specifically, finding him in an edit on tiktok and liking his design. After finishing the DLC? I was horrified of the character. It took me playing the game 3 more times before I was able to get used to just how horrific his segments are. He’s still my favorite character, but I always feel my stomach drop a little when I see him in game
I feel like, since the opportunity has presented itself, I have to mention my middle school sweetheart turn Ex had a very deep "thing" for Eddie and would often sexualize and fantasize them with me. I realized much later the horrors that relationship had put me through but feel in watching this just how horrific that infatuation was
It's interesting because Eddie's character is absolutely disturbing, but I think it's because he puts men in the same position as I see women put into in horror and in real life. It's the fear of "this person wants to hurt me, they are bigger than me, and they're going to do far worse than just killing me". And yes gore in horror is definitely awful but the fear of violation and sadistic pleasure from your pain and/or mutilation is another level of disturbing we don't see in Horror directed at men often.
@Jwizard16McDonald Hey, you're entitled to your own opinion. That's the nice thing about art. Different interruptions due to different perspectives. World wouldn't be interesting if we all lived the same life. Keep on keeping on.
@Jwizard16McDonald In the scope of horror fiction, you'll have to blame the writer and director for that one. Sexual brutality and violation in media, especially horror/thriller, have women more sensationalized and sexualized than their male counterparts by a wide margin. Being killed is one thing but being raped and killed is another. Horror writers know that, real life knows that. Hence why it's heinous and often used for shock value. (Or for the perverts out there, keeps them watching their movies).
@@abbaddon715 Your opinion is a byproduct of feminist propaganda that has been shoved down your throat since a very early age. Sexual abuse is nowhere near as horrifying as you make it out to be.
every time i play through outlast, i find myself both terrified of Eddie but also i feel so much pain for him. the horrors he was subjected to completely melted his mind - he never had a chance and i think thats what made him my favourite(?) villain - because like... he really stood no chance to even try and live a good life, there was nobody there to guide him and nobody there to show him how to be a good person - his parental figures ruined him before he could even form a thought on his own and that breaks my heart. and i mean there is still the obvious with the experiments and everything actually inside the game that you witness/learn about but i think his backstory hits really hard. Eddie is an amazing villain, and the writers seriously did such a great job shaping him, its such a shame he wasnt in the main game and only dlc 😭😭😭 like, the dialogue he says is probably some of the best imo - like the promising what happened to him would never happen to "our" kids all while subjecting us (the player) to unfathomable horrors - simply AMAZING in portraying his character ugh i just love this game man 😭😭
I think the other part of it that makes Eddie gluskin so scary is that he gives you a feeling of being violated. Dr. Trager kind of has the vibe too because he cuts off two of your fingers but not as much as Gluskin. I wasn't nearly as scared of Chris Walker or the Wallrider as I was of them.
Dude! How are you so freaking good and intuitive about tone, subtexts in delivery, atmosphere??! Goddamn Given your general style and vibe I think you should do more "a kind man's rage" sort of story, like the ones you've done about Peter letting go. You capture the rage and pain of the characters so well, and plus you do great jokes!
Even Jimmy isn't as vile as Gluskin. You think committing SA against one person is bad? How about DOZENS of women before he got caught, and that's all before he got started in Mount Massive.
As a woman, I want to say thank you for uploading this. Because men especially tend to forget how often other men are dangerous. "NOT ALL MEN!" They exclaim. But we don't know if we're dealing with an Eddie or a Waylon. And it's not that women can't be as deplorable as men, oh we're all human and capable of deplorable actions. But because the world is mostly men focused, they get the most chances to go and do far worse things.
Like, all too often I feel like guys in general don't understand how depraved other men can be. I'll never play Outlast. I have a low tolerance for gore and heinous crimes. But I feel like the developers really nailed it here. They put men in a similar role to what women have a higher chance of experiencing. There's noting salacious or cheap or forced feeling here; it's real and true horror. It's not raw, it's not a nightmare or real life where you really are trapped. But it's a simulation that absolutely shows the pure disparity and sickness that men do.
@@MysticMorigan1998 Yes. People may say it's not a women-only fear, and yes, some men are victims as well. Necrophilic hospital director with a hero complex who unleashes plagues so he can cure them for good press. The MC starts investigating and just finds more and more horrible things about the guy. Like he picks and chooses who he "saves," killing those who would cause maximum suffering (like the only child of a barren woman, spouses of already depressed or alcoholic patients, the most beloved of a group of siblings) which allows him to console them in such a way as to drain their wealth, and he has hidden cameras throughout to capture every moment of grief. Trager though isnt insane hes just evil even before he got admitted to murkoffs asylum (which murkoff probably did on purpose so that he wont go to prison to reveal any projects murkoff was working on) he was raping women and was a genuinely bad person and after the morphogenic treatment he just had more of a reason to be brutal to his victims
One of the best out here. You & Comic Lads are my top new comic related finds of the year. You both make interesting videos with extremely well placed wit.
For the game to have a character like Eddie Gluskin is incredible and terrifying. His character ties in to how monsters are made; either nature or nurture. In his case, it's nurture as his father and uncle did horrible things to him and his mother did nothing. Then even more so when he's put into that experimentation that corrupted his body and mind, creating the monster we see now. I was very amazed how they built up his story from the beginning to how he met his end. While I do feel bad for what he went through in the past, it doesn't excuse what he did in Mount Massive. Great video! Very informative!
My love for outlast cannot be expressed. This game is my all time favorite, I have the story memorized front to back and have played it many many times. I’m so so happy people still talk about it.
I love horror games, but Eddie is one of the few characters to actually make my jaw drop. A few times during his section I couldn't stop myself from covering my mouth in horror. I applaud him for that since not a lot of things can make me feel that uncomfortable. There were only a few parts in Outlast 2 that got a similar reaction, the babies you had to walk on was one of them along with the room where a girl was curled up on the bed weeping after Knoth was "done" with her. Outlast was easily one of my favorite horror games and this video captured why

As a transdude playing Outlast, Eddie scared the fuck outta me. First game since a SH boss I had to put the controller down for a "Oh fuck no" moment. Shame he was a short boss cause as a villain he's a brilliant character and deserved to have as much screentime as Chris or Frank. Just look at that gymnasium ceiling and his domain, dude was handling business in just 24-48 hours.
@veronis Well, think about it. As several commentors have said, what disturbed them about Eddie was they were guys playing the game, and along comes this big bastard chasing them down to turn them into women. That entire section disturbed a lot of guys playing and understandably so. Visceral reactions to him. Coming from a transguy...someone who already grew up with people pushing me and hounding me to be more girl like and trying to force it...shit hits waayy different. Resulting in, like I said, first game since SH2 released a game gave me the "what the fuck" moment I had to walk away. Talk to women that played the game, the ones that weren't drooling over him were pretty disturbed by him for reasons stemming from a woman's experience. He's that rare character wherein the player's gender and life experience can make his section really stand out and hit different compared to another player.
@@veronisThat trans people tend to have different outlooks on life and certain experiences with SA that would cause them to see the games events differently...?
fun fact: the point about how he can't tell that what he's doing is even wrong or evil is actually something that would probably be used in his defense in court. Part of the requirement for an insanity plea is that the person quite literally has to have no remote notion that what evil thing they did was even evil to begin with. The hangup would be whether he planned things out or not. Like he definitely has a whole set up for doing the things he does, but then he also just kinda does them at random. (Instead of attacking the player immediately when he has them in a locker he takes time to attack someone else for example) and he definitely isn't trying to plan ahead in a way that means he's trying to hide what he's doing. So it seems like they did a decent job writing him as an inmate at an asylum when it comes to his personality/actions

Really cool and extensive video on who I think is Red Barrels’ best villain. For someone so vile, it’s strangely nice to see an old face. 😂 Gluskin was (still is) my favorite villain. Having *been* a fan of The American Quartet, you can imagine my horror walking into his domain. He is consistently and realistically horrifying for both men and women. I always hated the little tumblr fanfics he accumulated because I felt like it wrote over everything that made Gluskin GLUSKIN. “He’s making women to kill them.” It’s just a level of hatred I haven’t seen. His intro, set up, second intro and death is so perfect and an iconic Outlast moment. I can go on. This was everything a DLC should be. Nice to revisit Mount Massive a decade later. (Trager was always a close second.) Would love to work on the Red Barrels team one day. Love them.
So, some speculation about Miles Wallrider seeing Waylin at the end of Whistleblower, notice how the jeep didn't have enough momentum to actually break through the gate. Miles pushed him through. He wanted Waylin to escape.
I remember how I got so obsessed with Outlast lore(I still am a bit obsess LOL), you can see how each patients are different from one another. They're people, too. They have illnesses that the Murkoff people used against them. Many of the asylum patients needed proper help, in which they weren't given to and actually made worse. In Mount Massive Asylum, you are just a guinea pig. Miles going from judging the patients, to somehow sympathising them made me see that there's much more in the patients. Waylon didn't see this, he just knows that the Murkoff people are messed up because they use the patients as nothing more than experiments, he encountered those who are aggressive(before and after HE was taken as one of the patients) while Miles sees other patients who simply needed help. Great video, only a few really talks about Outlast! I enjoyed it. 😊

Eddie making people his wife is
all kinds of weird.

I always find it interesting how a lot of men's biggest fears are of being treated like a woman and wrapping it up in a horror story like Aliens.

Yeah... Jeremy Blaire also takes the cake for awfulness and I think the only person he tries to kill is Waylon.
When outlast came out, it taught me the golden rule of not just gaming, but any situation really: Always.Look.Up.😬
I think it's worth considering that the Groom is one of the few villains in gaming that targets men this way, a masculine figure who threatens to violate the protagonist and subject both him and the (presumably male) player to an experience they typically never have to worry about or can feel disconnected from. Which is not to downplay the horror invoked, of course, quite the contrary.

@@abbaddon715 it's not a opinion. In horror men experience way more. Women are just more vocal abt their worries and are irritatingly irrational
Hence why it's heinous and often used for shock value. every time i play through outlast, i find myself both terrified of Eddie but also i feel so much pain for him. the horrors he was subjected to completely melted his mind - he never had a chance and i think thats what made him my favourite(?) villain - because like... he really stood no chance to even try and live a good life, there was nobody there to guide him and nobody there to show him how to be a good person - his parental figures ruined him before he could even form a thought on his own and that breaks my heart. and i mean there is still the obvious with the experiments and everything actually inside the game that you witness/learn about but i think his backstory hits really hard.

Outlast trials goes so hard. Definitely not as scary with friends but still some wild stuff
Bought outlast on a steam sale yesterday for 2,31 € , gonna buy the dlc some day as well lol. I've been a fan of the games for a long time and the groom is my favorite villain, the only one following shortly after being dr trager. Outlast for how simple it is has some great story and villains frfr.
Great video
I think you should play Mouthwashing! Would love to see your analysis on... all of that. Anyways, I never played any of the Outlasts but I watched playthroughs and the only villain I can ever remember is the Groom. He's so utterly terrifying and such a good representation of the very real fears and experiences woman go through. I always found men's reaction to the Groom to be so fascinating.
4:27 this guy and the one who caught the kitchen on fire always stood out to me, that not everyone was so far gone that they didn't have a sense of humanity or a semblance of right and wrong
+12 hours to be exact
Bro is busy
@@veronisThat trans people tend to have different outlooks on life and certain experiences with SA that would cause them to see the games events differently...?
I still remember my intro to all of this was the waylon and eddie ship
I want a girl by American Quartet is one of my favorite songs ever to be put into a horror game.
Omg I knew you were familiar with Outlast ever since the last Riddler video but I'm so excited to see you made a video on Eddie Gluskin!
As a Coloradan I can confirm that there is indeed a big facility buried under Mount Massive.
This man will make you his wife and you’re gonna like it mister.🐱
fun fact: the point about how he can't tell that what he's doing is even wrong or evil is actually something that would probably be used in his defense in court.
The groom creeped me out why I was running away from him lol 😂
Horror games with guns are my jam.
I loved the F.E.A.R. series for the feeling you get when all your training and armaments mean very little to the enemy
I don’t even like video essays but this was fire
I have no clue what game we’re talking about right now, and yet I’m completely invested.
Diddo.
Outlast
That is a really good video on him. I only watched someone play it because I'm bad at horror games, so I missed some parts for sure. Like I never really got why he was like he was and I sure didn't connect the dots that it was him at the start of this dlc.
Thanks for putting everything together and dive into his story. It was very interesting and chill to watch :)
I do love this character. He may be evil but he's not more evil than the corporation in the same game 😂
Saw the thumbnail and recognised Edward Gluskin immediately. That shit is haunting.
Ooh I've never been this early before. Love your stuff man!
Love them.
Shame we didn’t get the same feeling with 2 and trials. Honestly never wanted a sequel, but I do think they should make a brand new horror title
Was just rewatching your video on Professor Pyg earlier today, how fitting! And how welcome.
11:36 I did NOT ask for tongue asmr
What a breakdown bro, please do more vids like these 🙏🏾
So, some speculation about Miles Wallrider seeing Waylin at the end of Whistleblower, notice how the jeep didn't have enough momentum to actually break through the gate.
