Probably one of the greatest songwriters of all-time. I mean, let's be real. The heart, the soul, the hooks. Matthew Sweet has always knocked it out of the park, since day one.
Most people think this is a sunny breezy song about togetherness, but it's actually got a dark heart underneath all the cheery melody and chorus. That's why I love Matthew Sweet, you can sing along and rock to his music but there's always something deeper going on as well.
This album stayed in my CD player for probably 6 years. I was touring as a second guitarist with the band Love Jones shortly after 100% was recorded. LJ’s drummer played on several tunes. I listened to the rough’s and just fell in love with it. It’s a gem!
The moment you meet someone that is absolutely perfect for you and you realize all the years you listened to this song.Through failing relationships. You find this song again. It takes on a life of it's own.
This guy....yeah this guy. Mathew Sweet is such an awesome songwriter. I just fricking love his ear for a hook. I'm so happy I saw him live a couple years ago. He and I both looked a little worse for wear (It's not the 90s anymore), but he still put on an amazing show with all the good stuff, including this one. His songs make me pine for a woman I don't know and have never met.
My godddd I have always lovedddddd this song. I remember buying the cd single and this video is still rad as fuck!!!! Does anyone else push repeat on this like 5times??????
@@peterbolt9694 Check out John & Brandon's new band, The Lees of Memory. Especially their first album, Sisyphus Says. It's dripping with that early Superdrag sound.
@@mattygardiner6840 He played in a little bar here in Delaware called The Bottle and Cork. It's in a beach town called Dewey Beach and they always have national acts. I planted myself right in front of the stage. There was no barrier. I had my beer right next to his foot. Keep an eye on his website. He still tours, though probably not this year, y'know, 'cause of the whole Covid thing.
Really that's awesome I'm from new castle Delaware. I make my way down to the beaches ever few years. I gotta say I'm jealous theres no good music up here in new castle as of late.
@@mattygardiner6840 Small internet, huh? My sister lives upstate. So, I guess you know how small the Bottle and Cork is, then? Every summer, they pull in national acts. Inside, they have T-shirts on the walls with each year's calendar on it. When I was there, I was checking them out and saw the one with my band on it from the '90s. We played there a few times. Opened for Quiet Riot. Lol
Quit riot really that's freaking awesome and yeah small world huh when you said Delaware I was like damn first person I have met on the internet that is from Delaware too. I guess Newark has some options for places to go but it's been a little dry cause of this covid shit. I actually grew up in st Georges we lived right under the rt13 bridge the goes over the c&d and then we moved to Delaware city then to new castle by the farmers market. Sometimes I go camp on the beach at south Bowers. Have you ever been to bennits pier or south bowers?
Oh! Really miss the '90s greatest hits. It's a chill song for me and one of my favourites including Sick of Myself. With ♥️ from the 🇵🇭, Philippines.👍✌️🤘😉
Yesssss. He's like the Z man without the craziness. This may be my favorite video ever! I remember where I bought this CD (Discount Den in Kalamzoo, MI) when I was in grad school, on the day it came out. This song was on repeat for a while.
Wow I'm surprised there is finally an official upload of this. I first heard this song on a compilation album called "Modern Rock" over 10 years ago. Great stuff.
Lyrics: I don't have to speak and you know what I'm thinking You don't need to hear what I say I don't have to ask and you'll guess what I'm seeking You don't need to hide what you know Baby, we're the same When we fail in each other's eyes Baby, we're the same So you should not be surprised when I swear to you I never told you what to do Maybe it's me Maybe it's you I don't have to act so you'll know what I'm feeling You don't need to see to believe Baby, we're the same When we shine in each other's sky Baby, we're the same Sometimes it's me Sometimes it's you
Radio programmers in Australia should be shot up against the wall for not putting Matthew Sweet on high rotation. A lack of radio airplay means the general public are unaware of one of the best male artists in history. It's a shame Matthew has a morbid fear of flying, otherwise he would've toured Australia more than the 1993 Tour. The Gig at The Rose Shamrock and Thistle at Rozelle in Sydney was a beautiful and intimate experience.
OMG, so jealous I didn't hear about that show! All my Matthew Sweet CDs I had to find in the old 2nd hand strip of Pitt St. Girlfriend anniversary reissue is my only one brought brand new. I think a lot of music we missed out on was because we didn't have a "College" scene. Double J, staying up watching Rage , stores like Waterfront ,& reading free street press were the only way to uncover the best music.
He's always been known to write dark lyrics with an upbeat tempo. I love how this song is very uplifting right until the very end, when he repeats "maybe it's you" and it turns the entire song around from a love song to a very disturbing complaint :)
Matthew should have been bigger than Nirvana. As it is, he accomplished quite a bit; to have any kind of success playing brilliant power pop while the world was rocking out to grunge is quite a feat in itself.
Probably one of the greatest songwriters of all-time. I mean, let's be real. The heart, the soul, the hooks. Matthew Sweet has always knocked it out of the park, since day one.
Plus production and sweet harmonies!
I've been living in a cave..first time I've ever heard this song. Bad-Ass !! ✌
The 90's was beautiful
It was a great album..there's like 2 clunkers on it...but some real.good deep cuts
This song is so criminally underrated
🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
So true.
So right, the harmonies in the chorus just floor me. Love the version by Winterpills.
Absolute gem of a song. Nearly every girl I went out with during this era fell in love with this song. It’s hard not to. Totally brilliant
Just magic, so good
I am a girl during this era and love it!!
This song still has a fresh sound 25+ years after release. What a gem! 💎
Resplendent music. I don't care how you choose to classify it...this is the standard of great music.
Most people think this is a sunny breezy song about togetherness, but it's actually got a dark heart underneath all the cheery melody and chorus. That's why I love Matthew Sweet, you can sing along and rock to his music but there's always something deeper going on as well.
Yeah like everclear
Very possibly the greatest power pop song of all time.

Nailed that late 60's aesthetic.
Just another brilliant Matthew Sweet tune.
I'd say Sweet made perfect 3-minute songs, but their imperfection is that they're not longer. Can't get enough of gems like this.
Everything about this song and video is perfection.

Matthew Sweet.....One of the best artists of all time. A musical Genius!
How does the 90's sound like? This.
82,000 views?! I'm not the kind to disparage other music people listen to, but really, 82,000 views for this piece of pop mastercraft? What a shame!
Same. I'll never understand why this guy wasn't massive. His albums are power-pop perfection.
Well not anymore. It reaches now to 115k. - From 🇵🇭, Philippines.🤘😉
Definitely one of my favorite artists of the 90's and honestly definitely in my top 25 period.

This video is from a brain I haven't shared with. It gives me chills when I watch it.
love this song so much, since the 90's ♫♪

Superdrag, The Posies, and Teenage Fanclub come to mind.

Just heard this for the first time and I love it! Don’t know how in the hell I missed hearing this back in the day.
The best of what Matthew Sweet always brought to us! His lyrics and melodies are awesome! Love this song. Dp
Great drumming by Ric Menck, really pounds it out and keeps it at a high energy level, putting the power in this power pop gem

Thank you always and forever Matthew! Gorgeous! 💙✌️
This is incredible!
Beautiful. Matthew's music always strikes me with its power and beauty.
I first loved The Byrds. I guess that's why I fell right into Matthew Sweet, who I loved even more.
Miss the 90s, but always in the 70s!
This was my gateway song into Matthew Sweet.
Saw him play this last night. I forgot what a great song this is.
Where was that at I would die if I could see Matt I person

Lyrics:
I don't have to speak and you know what I'm thinking
You don't need to hear what I say
I don't have to ask and you'll guess what I'm seeking
You don't need to hide what you know
Baby, we're the same
When we fail in each other's eyes
Baby, we're the same
So you should not be surprised when I swear to you
I never told you what to do
Maybe it's me
Maybe it's you
I don't have to act so you'll know what I'm feeling
You don't need to see to believe
Baby, we're the same
When we shine in each other's sky
Baby, we're the same
Sometimes it's me
Sometimes it's you
