I’m sure you all know I meant no harm by the video and I fully did not mean to discredit Lilly’s accomplishments, like I said in the video; representation is so important. I was merely commenting on how unfunny and repetitive her jokes are, which happened to be about race. If it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t have discussed race but you’re right, as a white person I will never understand the struggles POC go through and I’m trying to educate myself everyday so I can avoid saying anything ignorant and insensitive. Luke Alexander I am a (in the closet) bisexual woman of color and your commentary resonated very much with my opinion of her jokes. If you compare her approach to that of Trevor Noah, you can see very clearly how it can be done right and she is doing it wrong. Don’t bow down to the virtue signaling white people getting offended on behalf of POCs. I’m also very disappointed with what Lilly has decided to do with her show because I also used to be a fan of hers... She’s just stuck in an era when it was ok to produce that type of content and she doesn’t know how to get with the times. It’s so cringy watching her show...

Totally agree! You can see it too with what she says about Friends. TBH it's not a show I love but saying you can't relate to media that centers around people of a race different than you is BS. It promotes the idea also that if a show isn't pure white people, it won't be watched because it will be "unrelatable".
Also, a lot of shows (as Luke pointed out) are doing a lot better with diversity. There's also Jane the Virgin, Black-ish, Mixed-ish, Fresh off the Boat, etc. (for older shows, when there really wasn't a lot of diversity, we have the legendary Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) I also understand not every show is FOR white people, they don't need to be either. The problem is saying that people who a show or movie isn't made for can't or won't also enjoy it. As you said, it perpetuates the "us vs. them"
I'm not saying there isn't still a problem, there is a huge problem still and we need to continue pushing for diversity, but like Luke was saying, it is a lot better than it used to be. I'm white, but I still love those shows and can relate to those characters. Granted, I cannot relate to ALL of their experiences, particularly when the characters are racially discriminated against. I fully accept that I don't know what that's like. We should be promoting the idea that you don't have to be 100% like someone to relate to them or have sympathy when you can't have empathy. Overall, we should still be able to relate to these characters as a human to a human.

100% agree. I look up to Ali Wong, Constance Wu, and Awkwafina because they are iconic female Asian celebrities and I identify with them a lot. But in their comedy, their race and gender are a frame of reference- rather than the entire joke itself.

I don’t think I’ve laughed at a single joke of hers. I love that she is a bisexual woman of color and is confident in her identity but.. she’s not funny?? When I was growing up, my race was the butt of jokes. "Can't have you around my pets" "GET IT?" "Cause you're Asian". I could not have related to you harder, despite being different races, when you you said, "If you make a joke about my race, at least make it funny". These types of jokes are lazy. They don't properly try and understand someone's culture/race and what's worse is these types of jokes made often have a racist undertone. Plus, it's creating more collateral damage than it is striking back at the people who have benefited from past racism. Ghazal i agree to some extent... she might have received mild racism in her time but like you said.. she’s worth millions of dollars and lives in America, id say she’s not as oppressed as she says she is. But On the flip side racism is a very real thing that many people living in America encounter and even though her show is absolute crap you have to give her credit seen as how she is a brown woman in a white male dominated field.

Sad thing is when her show gets canceled she's going to fall and her sword and act like a martyr for the cause of women of color and the LGBT community and that everyone was scared of her because she was fighting the good fight, when it's really because she isn't funny and people finally got tired of her just repeating the same thing without bringing any real insight or intelligence to the topics.
