That tone from Derek is just astonishing. Guy can channel both Eric and Duane at the same time, and all the while it's pure Derek Trucks. Transcendent.
Agreed. The guy is a class all his own.
💯×3
the best band of our time!!! im 69
Easy to see why Gregg Allman had Derek touring until the last show…
His guitar sounds like it’s talking. Duanes wife gave him the guitar he’s playing. Wow
This is probably the most talented band out there currently
.... check out... billy strings....!
Man, they are for sure.
Fricking amazing…. 3 lead guitars all performed perfect
With Trey- hands down. Sans Trey, top 5.
Absolutely 💯
Duane Allman would have been proud to hear this rendition of Layla.
I suspect Eric Clapton would be pretty happy with the result as well.
I think Clapton would be very impressed with all the talent and creativity Derek Trucks puts into this song and with the whole arrangement/production the TTB Performs!
@@notbraindead7298 Indeed he has played with them many times. legend 👏
Totally agree!!
I am sure, in his short 24yrs on the planet..Where would Duane have ended up? imho the greatest slide player ever..
Can we all just take some time and admit that Derek Trucks right about now, might be the best guitarist in the world or at the very least top 3?! He is seriously on top of his craft - technical astuteness, brilliantly rich tone, unmatched musicality and feel - tempered when he needs to be, absolutely off the rails and raw when he wants to be. I am just gobsmacked every time I hear him, just keeps on getting better and better.
I'd love to hear Buckethead learn to play slide. He's my favorite living guitar player behind Duane Allman. Derek and Warren are right behind Buckethead.
Lol. Bucket head VS trucks.... Lol I think you must be completely crazy.. Ah ah ahhhh
Best guitarist I have heard live in the past 10 years. Hell dude made me deaf twice
@@J.C...That's a joke, right ?
Might?
I will never understand how they nail the opening tone so well. Amazing....probably the most talented band out there right now.
Yeah they did their research on that opening!
75 yrs old and this is the best live band i have ever seen or heard, astonishing playing
They are as good as ABB! WHICH has been my favorite Band for over 50 years.
agree
agree!!! im 69 they are the best ever !!!
61yrs old and I saw them last year in Hamburg, Germany. It was the best Concert of my life. Never saw a better band
That speaks volumes brother!! Im sure you've been to your share of live performances... ive seen well over 240 concerts and will agree with you sir.
Is there a better guitarist that Derek Trucks? He don't miss a lick, everything in place, every damn note and innuendo dead on.
50 years since this song was born, and I had NEVER heard it done right live. Not by Clapton, not by anybody else. I was convinced it simply could not be done, the coda especially is just too fragile and always falls apart live. And then tedeschi trucks does it and it is simply sublime. Derek walks the tightrope on the coda and just soars. Thank you, what an absolute joy this is! ❤️
@Certinho Correct - Even clapton misses the energy and phrasing
Yes, Duane and Eric are awesome legends of course but could never have achieved this level with all due respect.
@@brianvoith4235 no live edition had Duane.
Man I have to agree , the rhythm section kills it , total justice to the album version of this song . I can stop watching this video today
As close as any human could have gotten to Sky Dog. Didn't make it, but an admirable effort.
Best guitar player in the world right now.
The missing Allman brother. He would've fit right in. The band sounds like a continuation of the 70's. Keep on truckin' Tedeschi.
By his teen years, he'd already sat in with the band and, at 19, joined the group full-time in 1999. Along with fellow guitarist Warren Haynes, HE was a mainstay of the Allmans until their final show in 2014
@@joecoles3978 He learned well grasshopper.
Derek is just amazing
I freakin believable!!!!!
Yes he is but don't forget the band laying down the foundation.
@@grantsmythe8625 yes I thought about that as soon as I commented that
@@evancline5978 ..well, no worries, as it's all part of the TTB working the Layla Revisited album they made. (Not revised). In other words, even they are saying Always Remember.
Truly, the very best guitarist walking this earth. Most grateful for their music and his talent
My! My!! MY!!! Derek's tone is otherworldly. As close to human singing as one could imagine. And his "backup" band! A butt-ton of extraordinary talent on that stage!!!
The greatest version of Layla. Period.
Including Eric Clapton's?! Yes, including Eric Clapton's.
Easy.......... number 1 on the way....
ua-cam.com/video/fX5USg8_1gA/v-deo.html
Greatest? Seems rushed to me
Its up there. But I think the recording with Skydog has just a little more umph to it.
Derek might be the only dude that naturally matches the intensity, spontaneity, and technical badassery of a coked to the gills Eric and Duane.
The best comment I’ve read in ages 😂😂😂
so true!
Duane and Eric had just flushed an ounce down the toilet...
@@jblcva 11/10 reference
Duane would have been proud of this young man.He is the next one that is gonna go far.
The precision, tone, and complexity of Derek’s playing is unworldly. As a guitarist I can’t help but laugh in disbelief when I hear his solos.
Every time I listen to this, I'm impressed even more. I'm a huge fan of both Eric Clapton and Duane Allman. Never have I heard a better version of this song.
How does he do that?
Derek has been nailing that song live since he was 12
The inclusion of Trey Anastasia and Doyle Bramhall lll was exceptional!
I love Doyle but he's only a 2. I saw his Dad in an outside concert, playing drums and singing. He sounds a lot like SRV.
Anastasia lul
Derek and Susan make a great team. Both have great tone (his guitar and her voice) and compliment each other incredibly. Susan doesn't often get the credit she deserves for her guitar work, she's a fine guitarist but has no problem letting her husband shine. And he does do that. Great performance!!!
Awesome
Susan is good enough to be the lead guitarist in many bands. She just happens to play in a band with someone who is even better!
Great guys... there is an interview somewhere where it mentions Susan and Derek meeting Bob Dylan backstage for first time, and guess what Bob gave first praise / respect for?
@@russellholt5879what ?
@@lloydrobeau5126 Susan's guitar playing (not Derek's) :-)
This is a smoking performance of Layla IMHO. I doubt Clapton himself has equaled it for a very long time. This is what the great classical orchestras do: play kickass covers of kickass classical compositions. The Tedeschi Trucks Band is doing the same thing with the rock and soul cannon to the highest standards of musicianship and faithfulness to the spirit of the original material.
Yes, you're so correct. TTB are the classical musicians of the rock and soul cannon. I don't think anything they do musically will ever fail or fall flat.
It feels like Clapton has been phoning it in for about 40 years now.
Clapton never had Duane on tour with him. But these guys have Derek. That will do
@@Ironworthstriking I mostly agree with you but, in my opinion, Clapton continues to have moments of inspiration that speak to my soul. Two examples that come to mind: 1) When he played with Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, Steve Gadd, and Joe Sample (Legends) - they pushed him and he responded. 2) The tour with Doyle and Derek - they too pushed/inspired him to raise his level. Even the greats need inspiration. By his own admission, Trey was pretty much burned out and (shocking), listening to TTB and Derek re-ignited his passion. At the end of the day, I only know two things for certain: My opinions (which I'm pretty sure no one gives a damn about) and that the music I love makes my soul sing: TTB makes my soul SING! Regardless of whether we agree or not - CHEERS!
Depends on the night. 40 years is a high estimate in my opinion but I get your drift. Clapton's voice and his ability to manage a group of musicians on stage is part of what makes him so special.
That slide guitar was giving me chills
If this doesn't prove that Derek Trucks is the greatest guitar player going I don't know what else to show you! My god brother that was the best rendition since the original
he did fumble a bit on the main solo and Trey was abit not feeling it still awesome musicians.
I am almost afraid to say it, but Layla Revisited may be better than the original!
I like to think this was inspired by the Clapton and Duane Allman studio version.
@@dawngoldstein298 me too
Clapton himself told Derek that he plays that solo better than him
Derek is the jaw-dropper here, but wow does Trey’s tone just cut through everything. Insane.
I'm in tears......I can only imagine the connection Derek feels with Duane while playing this masterpiece...
Derek and Trey look so connected when they play together i wish we could get more of this
He looks like Warren Zevon...❤
Guitarists who respect each other. Complement rather than compete. Excellent.
derek is the baddest dude on the planet. And the band....best ive heard...
Derek does his "Magic" as only he can to bring Layla back to life!!
I never thought anybody could play slide as good as Duane Allman. Derek Trucks does!
Derek Trucks is the only guitarist to ever bring me to tears. Take from that what you will
I studied bass and did that for a living when I was young. Worked with plenty of excellent guitarists, went to see a bunch of world-class acts, but Derek's the only guitarist who does this for me. To me. For us.
Trey and Derek and Susan are phenomenal. Wow
agree!!!
How has only like 1 other person noticed Trey Anastasio playing on here?? That's a sick amount of talent in one place! Amazing cover!
Cuz he's just being a version of old slow hand circa '70-71. Melting into scene, giving the song what it requires. Do they play any other D&D or Clapton covers with Trey?
@@kingsworthlionsblood they did this whole album. This is from that show.
And Doyle Bramhall II. This band is STACKED!!
@@85tclower yeah LOVE that Doyle is just some random dude playing rhythm for this song. You're right - stacked.
Don't forget ole lefty Doyle!!! This cast of musicians is amazing!!!
That moved me nearly to tears. Derek Trucks has a beautiful soul. And Susan is one helluva singer.
Susan can shred a guitar also. I remember falling in love with her and her music back in 1996 in Pensacola Florida. She's still as beautiful and talented as ever. I was mesmerized by her when she took the stage. Too bad Derek came along and married her in 2001. I was waiting for her to call me.
@@nomadjeff1922 smh...lol
It moved me all the way to tears.
And they love each other. He taught her to play guitar. She's getting really good.
@@davebender5038 She was a guitar hero loooong before they met.
Wow….Hat’s off to you Derek….a humble man with so much God given talents…
Talent is God-given. The thousands of hours of hard work to make it what it should be....well, that's what we call musicianship. Ain't it grand!
That they did the FULL ALBUM LIVE makes this a MASTERPIECE. Clapton's eyes are wet. Duane is smiling. Thank you TTB!
By far the best band in the world today !
I have never heard a woman sing theirs somf. She killed it! Love her voice. What a band. I just discovered this band. Love them.
Who is she?
@@nealbarton9289 Susan Tedeschi.
What I love about Derek is that he just gets up there and makes that guitar wail and sing. Love TTB...one of my favorite live bands.
This is a masterpiece. This band is fantastic!
That is the best version of that song I’ve ever heard. Amazing tone and feel.
Trey is a talented musician who enthralls thousands of loyal fans with his licks. And that is why I think him looking at Derek at the end of this song is so great. He has jammed with everyone under the sun but he is seeing something (like we all are) that almost seems to defy greatness. It is so good that it makes you kneel to the ground and acknowledge that Derek has reached the top
Derrick Trucks is just sent from heaven.
So talented, beautiful and humble.
Long live TTB.....❤🧡💛
Trucks is just on another level compared to any other guitarist today
agree
Derek Trucks is so clean and tight when he plays. So precise. Every single note sounds intentional. So unique. Love watching him play.
I love watching Trucks play the Axe.......he is truly one of the best ever.
Derek Trucks is just magnificent. He never misses the micro tone after the accent note. What an ear! I wonder what Jeff Beck thinks of this guy.
I think Jeff Beck admires Derek Trucks.
You know, when Bb king was asked shortly before his death who the best guitar player he ever heard was and ,without hesitation he said Derek Trucks... that says something, I think
@@brianvoith4235 I agree with you.
For real there are some under appreciated parts he is amazing
Sometimes I forget just how incredibly talented Derek Trucks is and then I see a video like this and I’m blown away once again!
Think of the load on Trey & Doyle's shoulders and then your on stage, live in the middle of the song and no stress just pure joy
Derek Trucks is a guitar god... the best guitar player of his generation. The man brings me to tears with how he plays this. Beer is on me sir if your in Calgary again.
Derek's playing, Susan's voice, Wow. !! one of the best versions I've heard.
Derek trucks really is the best guitar player alive.
Derek mades me ponder reincarnation, the phrasing, the emotional gravitation, the every note serving a meaningful purpose. Such bliss
Love that female trombone player,She is having fun dancing, playing up a storm. Every song she’s just high energy and low drag.
The great Duane Allman was taken away from us way too soon but nothing soothes my heart better than to know that Derek Trucks made this world a much better place to live since he started playing slide. He makes his guitar cry like *nobody* I've seen! This performance is historically magnificent. Also, the chirping bird sound that Derek made in the end was magistic. Thank you!
The only person who can make me cry like Duane would be Buckethead. His ambient, slow stuff is incredible.
You would hear Duane chirp on the radio, BUT the DJs always TALK over it, 😞 , I know,,, squeeeeeezzz every second in for commercials 😞
Born again
After 60 years on this big blue marble with literally hundreds of live shows under my belt, I have been blessed to get maybe a handful or two of truly magic musical moments beyond compare. Experiencing Layla at Lockn with Derek, Susan and Trey was one of those moments.
The best version of this classic song I have ever heard. Absolutely outstanding.
Das muss ich auch sagen grandios. Say hi from Germany.
I think this album is the best I've heard Trey and Derek play, which is saying a lot. When they're playing off each other, it's absolutely another level.
I don’t really hear Trey doing much of anything

His guitar tone, you'll see
Just amazing….the best guitar player of the current era…WOW!
And even after playing this song, likely thousands of times, he still plays with such passion and respect for what I have called the greatest love song I've ever heard. Thank you Derek, Thank you Eric, and God bless you, Skydog.
This would make Clapton proud ,Derek is unbelievable . Makes me want to Burn my guitar as firewood . Every one on the stage is phenomenal.
Hard to believe this song was released 52 years ago. It was my favorite then and it's my favorite in 2022!! Long live Layla....The greatest rock love song ever ....well, to me anyway 😁😊😊
I'm with ya there, man. I still have my 45rpm vinyl copy of Layla from when the song was originally released. I was 24 back then - I'll be 79 this coming September. Where has time gone? The man grows older - the song remains the same.
@@jaycorby thank you brother 👍
Derek Trucks is the greatest living guitarist!
I studied double bass a long time ago, and Derek Trucks is pretty much the only guitarist who gets this bass-auntie to cry happy tears with his playing, and I've worked with plenty of guitarists and listened to hundreds if not thousands.
I can’t stop listening to this. It’s is one of the most extraordinary pieces of music I’ve ever heard. Derek Trucks is beyond amazing.
When Derek took the slide I thought "no way he is going Duane now!" and he did it! So much respect in each note. What a beautiful tribute to Eric and Duane! Thanks, Tedeschi & Trucks! You are awesome!
Have to agree- the best live version ever put out there. The band is huge, the sound is huge, and nobody steps on anybody. Just perfect in my opinion. Thanks for sharing!
Agree best band
Yep. Beautiful.
Best version of this song I’ve ever heard. Perfect in my opinion too. Derek is over the top in talent, skills, interpretation, and presentation. Even Tedeschi nails the vocal with power and feeling. The band delivers an all-star performance. There is no other blues band in existence that can match this version of Tedeschi Trucks.
Dammit...Yeah, that's about as fine a live version of Layla as I've ever heard. I always like to hear DT play it, and the rest of the band here is just on point. It's a tough song to get right live, and one of my all-time favorites. And not to belabor the obvious, but Trucks is just the most complete ,spontaneously creative and soulful guitar player in the business today, certainly within the genre..
Just saw the band at the Beacon. Pure joy and perfection. Her voice and playing is better than I ever recall and well - there is only one Derek, clearly one of the greatest musicians to ever grace this earth. You will be transported.
I could listen to Derek play guitar all day long...His playing is so clean. Such an amazing talent!
Derek is the only guitar player on this planet that can do this song the justice it deserves. Duane would be PROUD!
I've always said emphatically that this song isn't Layla without Duane. Well, it's Layla with Derek. WOW. 😭😭😭
he DEREKED it up....in his masterful and very cool way.......but still played all of the sacred riffs that we all need......❤️❤️❤️❤️
Derek Trucks is exceptionally gifted but the whole band sound so good here, highly pleasant listening which breathed new life into an old number.
Who is the older guy playing with Derek. The guy with the John Lennon glasses?

Seen TTB twice over the past couple of years, I must say this dude has a touch of talent!!! And Susan Tedeschi is Bonnie Raitt times 5. What a soulful voice! What a band!
I first heard Susan live when she was still a solo act and was overwhelmed by her voice and have been every time I've heard her live since.
Love Derek and Trey what a combo. Reminds me of Duane and Dickey in their prime.
Fabulous
Absolutely blow-away guitar and vocals. This is my #1 band to catch live this year.
Saw a few months ago at Red Rocks, first time seeing them live. So great!
I always look forward to their week at the Ryman.
Derek even looks like a Guitar Hero. He’s just on another level, too good.

Well that was probably the best piece of guitar playing I have ever seen! And I'm old! I've been a huge blues fan for 30 years and am a massive fan of many great guitarists, but I have never , never, seen someone play slide and regular guitar on the same instrument with such grace and skill. Even Stevie Ray and Joe Bonamassa would be dumb struck! OK so I'm off to buy all their albums :)

If it doesn't give you chills, it's probably because you've heard Clapton do it live. TTB are a great band and I've heard them do some insanely good performances but they keep doing covers of songs that no-one should do covers of.
@@dougsullivan9022 Oh do try to keep up, will you Doug? 🤦♀️The entire concert was an homage to the Layla album. Yes, I've seen Eric Clapton in concert twice and he was amazing! Yes, they do cover other artist's songs that they are fans of, but you know who else does that??? Yep, that's right! Eric Clapton! 🤷♀️ And he's done quite well for himself doing it too!
Tears. Great. Add another song that makes me weep. Prine, Zevon, Chapin have company. Difference is with this, it’s the depth of soul in the rendition more so than the loss of the artist.
