Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are honored to be joined by author and inaugural poet, Amanda Gorman, to react to Star Trek (2009). Amanda chose this movie because it speaks to what she writes about, coming together with shared common ground from different backgrounds and perspectives. They take a look at how Kirk and Spock work together despite their differences. Jonathan talks about shared humanity and perspective taking and how Kirk and Spock learn to work together. 16:22 I actually really like that the turning point when Spock gets violent is Kirk saying he didn’t love his mom because in one of the first episodes of the original series, the entire crew gets infected with a virus that lowers all their inhibitions and Spock is crying alone in a room when Kirk enters and Spock says “my mother, I could never tell her I loved her” and that’s when she’s still alive! All this is to say that Spock is constantly struggling with the level of emotion (a big part of his mother’s culture) he feels comfortable expressing without betraying the philosophical ideal that is so systemic to his culture.
Oh dang, I didn’t make that connection, but yeah that’s a fantastic connection!
Not that you guys should feel insecure or anything but please get Amanda back for more. Poetry never clicked with me until I listened to hers (and her readings). Little did I know she's a massive nerd as well. Insane get, guys. What an incredible episode. Thank you. 🙏🏻

At the end when Amanda compares the parallel trauma of Kirk and Spock growing up... emotions and chills. Incredible.
Kirk and Spock's relationship is one of the most beautiful and genuine male friendships to ever grace the screen. Some have even gone as far as to deem it romantic due to their closeness.
There is this quote that I think sums them up well:
"It honestly doesn't matter if their relationship is truly romantic or not. A friendship like theirs is so rare and special that the public perception of it will never contradict the obvious bond of inseparable love between the two. Regardless of what kind of love it is, it is still love. And that's what's so beautiful about them."
Fuck yeah.
That quote is indeed perfect! And that bond is indeed rare, as the only other possible example I can think of is the one between Sam and Frodo in the Lord of the Rings. I personally don't think either is romantic, but rather the sort of kinship one develops with those they fight alongside with in a war, facing death and suffering and finding hope in each other. Either way, platonic or romantic, their friendship is undeniable.

I found that their relationship while platonic and very strong in a bond. I would place love in that category for the two of them feel for each other, but they complement each other in a way that is very prophetic and understandable the buttheads but they'll still be cordial to each other the next day. You definitely is something rare and special
of course, when you consider the pon farr theory, it's likely that they got it on at least once...

Well…we already knew that Amanda is incredibly insightful but if she wasn’t a poet (an observer of humans and human interaction), she could possibly have been a therapist or anthropologist because she just GETS it! Stunning! We are so lucky to have her during our time! 💜

Star Trek and Amanda Gorman is not a combo I ever expected on Cinema Therapy, but it's so perfect I am fangirling out of my mind!
I'm so glad that you mentioned Anton Yelchin. He was so great in this role, and it was tragic that he died before the third movie released.
As a 73-year-old Trekkie, I loved this movie. I thought it was a brilliant move to do a reboot in an alternate history.
And that’s when I fell in love with Zachary Quinto.
You should check him out in the first season of Heroes. And watch ONLY the first season.

Years ago, I was asked at a job interview “if you could have dinner with three people, who would they be?”
I don’t remember my answer, but I know behind the shadow of doubt that whatever it was, I was wrong.
The only correct answer is Alan, Jono, and Amanda Gorman.
I watched this movie once in college a few years ago. I don’t remember much about the movie itself, but I do remember resonating a lot with Spock-specifically when Kirk asks him if he cried when his mother died, and if he ever actually loved her at all. I’ve legitimately had people say similar things to me because I tend to keep my emotions under tight control and don’t show affection or vulnerability very openly. I really felt for the poor guy in that scene. Just because someone doesn’t *express* sadness or love or happiness on the surface doesn’t mean they don’t *feel* it deeply.

Also, fun fact about Kirk eating the apple during the Kobayashi Maru test: that's a reference to Star Trek 2, where Kirk is eating an apple as he tells the story of how he beat the Kobayashi Maru exam.

Me too! Now more than ever, Spock reminds me as a guy on the spectrum that it is okay to be different psychologically and emotionally...as someone who has also experienced emotional turmoil like Spock a few times and felt I needed to repress it, I like how he grows to accept his emotions.
I'm only passingly familiar with Star Trek, never watched any of the shows but have watched a couple of the more recent movies. I never thought about Spock being a spectrum-type character, but that's a pretty great call (as the parent of a child on the spectrum myself).
I get the impression, admittedly anecdotally, that that's not at all uncommon. It's great to know that there's representation in such an admirable character.
Fun fact for all you guys stock was a literal representation of the alien learning about humanity which in another sense. Yeah he would seem like he's on the autistic spectrum and kind of like that extra layer there. It makes it him more rounded and unique

Amanda Gorman is a national treasure. Every time she speaks I feel inspired~
I always think of the Breaking Bad creator talking in a doc about how Star Trek was a little like the classic show Mayberry, where a big draw is that the audience wants to believe a place like this exists. Mayberry was a quaint cute place and Star Trek is full of space dangers but both are aspirational in that what we consider the best of humanity is on display. We've moved past old ways and continue to move forward and explore and meet new beings and try to understand them. It really would be the greatest feat, to get humanity back on a track where we could survive long enough to reach a reality like Star Trek and be worthy of our place in the universe.

The line "You mistake my choice not to feel as a reflection of my not caring, while I assure you the truth is precisely the opposite." is incredible!

@@esther589 honestly same. I mean Me and my dad rewatched the second one just randomly a few years ago cuz we both thought it was awesome, I rewatched it yesterday and still think its awesome. I 100% understand that ppl hate it becuz it technically was at its release seen as a cheap remake of Wrath of Khan changing around plot-twists to bait and trick the audience. E.g. the marketing hiding the fact that Benedict was Khan and then switching who dies at the end. I get that, if u watched Wrath of Khan first you probably might never stop hating Into Darkness. But by itself, separated from the original, Into Darkness is pretty damn awesome, most of the film is far different from wrath of khan and just explores what if this same guy was found in different circumstances. It’s just by itself I really think its a very entertaining fun movie that does exactly what you want from the new Star Trek films, all the character relationships/dynamics/arcs are great, the action is great, the visuals are great, performances great.

YES! I actually just happened to write a comment about this on the Zuko video about how these movies are a lot better than people give them credit for, and especially how they have a lot of therapeutic ideas about grief, handling emotions, friendship. And how great the writing can be with some gems of wisdom from Spock. Ik many Star Trek fans hate these movies and I can understand why, but growing up with these films and then watching all the older Star Trek series and films, I think these still hold up in their own right, they’re different but not as dumb as people dismiss them as. Have rewatched them quite a few times and compared to the nostalgia goggles of the prequels, I think the writing in these can really be quite good but ofc its also thanks to the source material and it makes sense ppl would hate a reboot of it. But man considering the reboot/remake era of that time, we could’ve had a lot lot worse
Just as a data point, I've been a Star Trek fan since I watched the original series in first run as a little kid, and I *love* the Kelvin timeline. A lot of LOUD fans hate the series, but plenty of us are happily watching, too.
@@angiepenthats nice to hear, i was really upset that Star Trek Beyond did so poorly and that since then any new movie has been caught up in salary/payment conflict with the studio that wants to severely cut the budget, but more consequently, the pay of Hemsworth and Pine whose negotiations fell through. I think thats becuz of the era of ‘every movie needs to make a billion otherwise its a flop’ when Beyond made 343 mil on a 190 mil budget, and the previous ones made 100 mil more i guess. But its insane, i mean star trek movies have never made that much money to begin with.
Anyways i think a lot of fans have been upset with all the tv series of NuTrek that followed, and a lot of ppl dont watch Strange New Worlds even if its pretty decent, so idk if we’ll ever get another movie. I hope so becuz the cast & crew of these films were phenomenal, the films looked fantastic, they had fantastic performances, and I think Beyond was really leading towards the sort of fun one-off Star Trek plots people loved from the old films

I can't tell you how excited I was when I saw this notification. The Kelvin timeline gets so much hate from the Star Trek purists, but they were my comfort movies after my father died. So they will always be special to me. May all three of you live long and prosper. ❤

I hadn’t consciously noticed the “Kirk v. Spock in the hearing” aspect where the camera stops moving before. But it is powerful. it’s like the moments in soundtrack-filled movies when the music pauses for a dramatic moment. The LACK of the normally-there thing makes the moment even more powerful. Now I’m going to have to watch for this in other Abrams movies.

This is an amazing video and I loved everything Amanda said! I am highly analytical, logical, and skeptical- it’s difficult for me to let go of the control because I think I have always thought of every outcome but I have learned to listen to others and the value they bring to situations.
The great strength of sci-fi and fantasy is taking real world conflicts and abstracting them so they can be examined from a different perspective. Humans and Vulcans independently figured out how to overcome intraplanetary conflicts and go to space, but neither would have successfully created the Federation on their own.
That was an amazing episode. I wholeheartedly enjoy that and it definitely ended far too quickly. Many times I watch you guys I want to go sit and watch the whole movie right there with you. I feel so educated yet so entertained and most of the time I struggle to gain both without pushing the other away. And Amanda is a sweetheart I absolutely hope she comes back🩵 I also realized it’s been too long since I’ve last seen Star Trek!

This was so cool!! I've always loved Star Trek and especially the Kelvin Timeline, so of course I expected that I would enjoy this. What I didn't expect was to realize that when Amanda talked about Spock being punished for his emotions and Kirk hating himself for his lack of rationale that this directly parallels my relationship with my (older) sister! She was always the critical thinker---give her any opportunity and you can see on her face the on-the-fly calculation of "Is this worth the risk?" Whereas I have always been a very thrill-seeking, spontaneous, more emotionally driven person. I always hated that I wasn't as naturally composed as her, and struggle a lot with comparison between us, considering myself to be her exact opposite. But when I told other people about this, they never saw it that way, saying they thought we were very similar and didn't consider me "irrational" at all. It was so crazy to think that the perceived differences might actually be similarities, just in a different environment. Wonderful stuff as usual!
P.S. have you ever considered doing something about a self-defeating personality type? I don't know any good movies that reflect that, but it would definitely be an interesting watch. Live long and prosper! 🖖

I legit got mad when I heard how he died. He was a fantastic actor. I wanted to see more of his work. But now, because of a stupid car, that's it. There ain't a price tag big enough for the loss of that man.

Oooh, thank you for this particular episode! All my passions brought together! I've had a life-long interest and involvement in science fiction (particularly Star Trek), movies, reading, and politics. Can Amanda Gorman, pretty please, make Cinema Therapy a trio? You all kind of worked a specific miracle for me. I've had such mixed feelings about the Kelvin timeline. The casting is absolute perfection but, even though I understand the need for a big event to create a different timeline, the destruction of Vulcan seemed too "disaster porn" for me. (Let's destroy Vulcan or Metropolis or an entire dimension or whatever so our characters can learn something.) But, the episode reminded me how perfectly the 2009 movie dramatizes the Vulcan / Star Trek premise of "infinity diversity in infinity combinations" (IDIC) as a source of strength rather than weakness. Now, I need to rewatch it. Thank you!

LETS GO! I love the Kevin Star Trek it’s what got me into Star Trek and I love Chris’s take on Jim because I thought his settle character development throughout the series was really interesting and inspiring to watch.
Near the beginning of the video when Jonathon and Alan asked, "Why Amanda?" my brain went to Spock's mom, Amanda Grayson, and just completely forgot the guests name is also Amanda despite being in the title of this video in big letters.
Also, Amanda's analysis at the end made me understand the dynamic between Jim and Spock so much better. Thank you.

For all the issues I have with the Abrams Trek movies, one of those issues is not the casting, they absolutely nailed it there. But I've gotta speak up for Karl Urban as Bones. His performance literally moved Leonard Nimoy to tears because of how much it reminded him of DeForest Kelley, so mad props to Karl.
Could you guys do an episode on the friendship between Kirk, Spock, and Bones? They've always been one of the best examples of balance in friendship and in a command structure portrayed, even when Bones and Spock (mainly Bones) bicker like an old married couple.
This is such a treat! I'm unabashedly a Trekkie. I have always been fascinated with the dynamics between the different Captains and First Officers.
The way that Picard is the only captain Riker has respect for and why, and the way Chakotay stands solidly behind Janeway despite his superior knowledge as a wartime captain.
The way Sisko deals with his various first officers in Deep Space Nine.
Please do therapy on that. If there are a group of people that need it, it would be them.❤❤❤ 😂😂

The increasingly-close close-ups starting at 15:36 totally to me back to when I saw the movie in the theater. I was seated in the very front row (probably because I was running away from someone's perfume), and I remember sitting there feeling like I was looking up the nose of a giant Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

I love how Spock's and Kirk's friendship grows in the second film.
Also, I love my parents, but having Emma Swan and Thor as parents would be cool too.

One thing that has to be covered is Spock competitive sides internally as a half Human/Vulcan.
Also the love that he has for his mother despite not showing it as he tries to embrace his Vulcan side is exceptional in this movie.
Every time Spock looses his cool & control of his emotions is when someone talks bad about his mother.
When the Vulcan Science 🖖🏾 Academy shaded his mom, the clap back was awesome.
When the kids & Kirk talked about his mom Spock let them "catch dez hands".
The latter was even better that Sarek let Spock whip Kirk azz till he was content that Spock beat some sense into Kirk.
The character dynamics in this movie where wonderful and i love Spock journey and how the love of his parents shaped him.
Especially his father Sarek giving Spock the permission to embrace his human side to avenge his wife & his mother respectively death.
Really my favorite character development in this movie.
Amanda Gorman demonstrates the power and importance of the art of communication. Not only does she possess the eloquence of a poet, but the wisdom to express herself profoundly.

THERE IS SO MUCH I LOVE IN THIS EPISODE. This is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I absolutely LOVE Amanda’s nerdiness about Star Trek and stellar commentary. Please have her back!
Her talking about meeting your mirror? Ouch, way too real😂 She is so beyond smart, because that is absolutely true. I recently met someone who reminded me so kuch of myself in so many ways, but I hated this person😅 It was like looking into the future and seeing how I KNEW I would be if I didn't stay on the track of healing and growing and learning, like seeing my worst characteristics embodied as their own person. It wasnt a very pleasant few days that I was around this person (a coworker... they got fired😅), but oh boy did I learn a lot about myself!
My grandfather just passed away a week ago and Star Trek was his favorite show and he adored Amanda’s work and I know the timing is far unintentional but I thank you for doing this episode the way you have. Thank you.

So I clicked on this to soothe my wrecked heart after watching your clip on Grave of the Fireflies, and did not expect to see Amanda on here! Dressed as Uhura!! What!!! Wow I would watch the Amanda Show. Especially geeking out over ST and shipping the greatest ship of all time. I loved that you all wore the appropriate uniform colours!!
