Another fun fact. Chris Gardner cheating on this wife, had a kid with the woman in the movie and moved to be with her. He was still legally married throughout the entire movie. He didn't get a divorce until 1986. His wife was a teacher and he was studying to be a physician before he gave up.
They obviously couldn’t include everything they went through in the time frame of a film. But the real Chris Gardner said he befriended some prostitutes that worked in the area and they would give him money sometimes to feed his son. As much of a true success story as this is, we need to remember that no one makes it alone. Everyone has help achieving in one way or another.
Sioux City iowa here. Now I live in North Dakota. isn't it crazy how the Lord works in strange ways. I'm beyond grateful to be where I'm at now. Love you and stay strong.
Every time I watch this movie I’m brought to tears. My mom struggled just like Chris while I was growing up. She was a single teen mom with no help from family. We had almost a similar experience as the train station when I was little. We got evicted from our apartment. I had no idea because my mom told me we were going camping. I was sooo excited. I’d never been camping before in my life. I was older when I realized what had really happened. We were homeless and spent several nights in a sleeping bag behind some bushes at a playground. Despite all that struggle, she wanted to shield me from our reality and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for.
sorry you had to go through that. no one deserves to be homeless and struggling like that, especially if you're doing everything you can to try and make things work. that was sweet though, the camping part
1:00:49 Chris mentioned at the start of his application process that if you weren’t selected from the internship program to be hired you couldn’t apply to another firm. The stakes were pretty high for him.
I remember seeing this in the theater. My heart couldn't take all the set backs so when he got the job, I sobbed. That moment on the sidewalk where he's still processing and feeling all the emotions is so real. You want to cry, shout, jump for joy, all of it.
I been there temporarily. Homeless, donating plasma twice a week for half a year till I could get a job that paid all my bills. I couldn't imagine my situation with a kid though. Chris is incredible
If you’ve ever been poor, this movie does such a good job of showing frantic-ness… you can’t ever relax. There only this bus to go there, this or that office is only open on that day at that location, every $5 has to last for so long and there’s so many unexpected, unplanned, emergency pop up expenses, all the time…. It’s nonstop. And no it wasn't smart to trust a stranger with the scannner but i relate to having to hide my finances to make a good impression. I'd travel with a backpack and change clothes at a nearby coffee shop to go to interviews - always claiming my car was parked at the shop so I didn't reveal I had no transportation which was usually a job requirement. Come early and leave late so no one saw me at the bus stop, etc.
I remember Smith telling the story on how the director reprimanded him to stop doing 'will smith acting' (the type of acting he's been doing in his action blockbusters) and to find the real core emotions and let that come out in more authentic expression. Smith was able to let himself be completely vulnerable and he turned in one of his best acting performances in his life - this movie began Smith's career as a serious dramatic actor. BTW, that last scene where he officially joins the company is my favorite scene - i love rewatching it
I admire the dad because a lot of parents in his situation put their kids up for adoption but not him, he worked his ass off to give him and his son a better life
Trust me this is the only movie for ALOT of men, the biggest reason will smith is my favorite actor is because he’s the only actor that has made me cry, this and seven pounds are the only two movies
Watched this when I was seven years old and it stuck with me for the rest of my life. Even until today. My dad had told me something very similar to what Chris told his son: don’t ever let somebody tell you, you can’t do something. At 19, I got the tattoo of the movie name, The Pursuit of Happyness, on my arm. Whenever I wake up or I’m going through it, I look at my arm and remind myself to pursue happiness in my life. I’m almost 30 now and I’ve learned a lot of life lessons but the #1 thing is never give up on something you enjoy doing. Thank you guys for watching this amazing and inspirational movie ❤
I just looked him up, and I'm in awe that his son's name is also Christopher. Which is Jadens other name, I always thought they just used that name so the kid wouldn't be confused 😂
Something this movie makes you think of is, You never know what someone is going through. Especially when you're making a judgement. Like a parent yelling at their kids...
This movie hits hard I was homeless for 2 years and when I say it feels like your alone sometimes it does. I thank God for getting me where I am and I always take every little thing as a blessing.
When Will was promoting this movie, he came on Oprah and brought out the real Chris Gardner.. And to hear his story before watching the movie just added more context to the film..
Exactly lol. At least he's trying to do something bigger while she just worked at a restaurant and had no bigger aspirations. He never gave up on himself. Surprised I watched this entire thing
They didn't show the part where ladies of the evening would look out for his son while he tried to sell the scanners. Chris Gardner has said in interviews that they really came through for him.
I had the same experience as Christopher. My dad dropped everything in the middle of my kindergarten year and moved us to VA. We lived there for 3 years, during which we lived in a car, out of motels, homeless shelters and with other people my dad befriended along the way. When I was 8 we moved back to our home state of CT to live with my dad’s childhood best friend and within a year we were living in our own apartment for the first time in a long time while my dad went back to school and worked nights❤ It was the shortest part of my life so far, currently 25, but definitely the most impactful part of my life
That crank on the wall is the method of opening the door down below. These houses in San Francisco have sometimes 30 to 50 stairs from the bottom door up to the top floor, which is very hard to walk all the way down to open the door. So there is an internal levy system inside the wall That opens the door from above. We had one in our apartments.
JV 35:14 😢 Your wifes comment about your guy's daughter wanting to have troll hair made me tear up 😆 the way Jane described it made me hear it in a kids voice and reminded me of how much I miss my sons my ex doesn't allow me to see. Idk how I'm still hanging in there tbh. Love your reactions as always. God blesses you both just not me I guess.
I recently found out that the son was actually way younger than presented in the movie. The studio "aged up" Jaden Smith so Will Smith could have someone to have intimate dialogue with in the film that wasn't related to the internship.
I taught myself to solve a 3x3 with a video. I gave my son his first cube at age 3. He's 10 now and his solve record is under 30 secs with his speed 3x3. He has over 15 different cubes.
Growing up, this movie was one of my absolute favorites. Years later it still holds up amazingly and, I don’t care what anyone says, Will Smith was and still is one of the best actors ever!
"just find a normal job" yeah not as easy as it sounds. Sure you could get a job flipping burgers at McDonalds, but it isn't sufficient enough to pay the bills for a family of 3. For some people finding a job that pays well and is something that they are even qualified to do is not an easy task.
A bone density scanner is now commonly called a DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scan; it's a more advanced form of X-ray technology used to measure bone mineral density and is considered the standard method for assessing bone health today. Key points about the bone density scanner: Full name: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry Abbreviation: DXA What it measures: Bone mineral density How it works: Uses low-dose X-rays to assess bone strength
Regarding the scanners. I don't hold it against him too much. A lot of people get fooled into sales schemes like that. Someone promises the world and makes it seem easy to do and then when reality sets in, you're left trying to figure out how to get out of it. Not that I speak from experience 🙄
I watched this with my father and he enjoyed it, he was a big fan of the underdog and Chris gets kicked in the balls but kept going such an amazing story
In 1981, unemployment was high and inflation was out of control so it was probably hard to find a job. The federal reserve was increasing the interest rates to control inflation during that time.

Despite all the controversial things, Will is undeniably one of the greatest actors of all time with huge range
there wasnt any controversy with those who weren't white and knew the history behind what he did.

Fun Fact, the instructor (Dan Castellaneta) @ 32:02 is the voice of Homer Simpson
“Seven pounds” is an underrated will smith movie. I think it’s great!
The guy bossing him around sending him on coffee runs is the voice of Homer Simpson. Very ironic that he sent him out to get donuts.
Chris Gardener was a person you could call an idiot but also a person that chased his dreams. He really never stopped trying and working.
I solve Rubik's cubes as a little hobby. I average about 10 seconds a solve. I can confirm that solving a Rubik's cube doesn't mean you're smart 😆

California does have a huge homelessness problem.
The "problem" is every other state sending their homeless to California and making them bear the cost
In 1981, unemployment was high and inflation was out of control so it was probably hard to find a job. The federal reserve was increasing the interest rates to control inflation during that time.
