i was 6 years old when TOS started in 1966. grew up with Star Trek. one thing you'll come to realize about the franchise is Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura are all the main characters of the show, some more than others, but the MAIN star is U.S.S. Enterprise. she was and is Star Trek. you'll see the love for her after watching more. "you treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home". greatest line in the entire Star Trek universe.

@@jenmurrayxo The Original Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols (who passed away just this last year.) Was a huge civil rights Icon. At one point she considered leaving the show, but was strongly encouraged by Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr to stick with it, because she was one of the very first black women to be portrayed as a major character on TV who wasn't a maid or slave or servant type, but as an equal. She went on to work with NASA on minority recruitment, and was a direct inspiration to Dr. Mae Jameson, the first black female astronaut. Mae Jameson also had a cameo as a crew member in an Episode of Star trek: The Next Generation. The Enterprise was a rarity at the time, with an ethnically diverse crew, because the creator wanted it to be representative of a future where Earth was United and everyone was equal.

It's a fun action movie either way, but it's more than that if you know what it is playing against (and let it be... I'll never understand the backlash from some of the fandom.) That said, might as well finish these next two films first. Might get confusing otherwise. Finish this timeline, then backtrack.

(yes, I am trying to get people to call the "original series" "The five year mission series!") :) IMO, None of the movies really stand on their own without seeing at least SOME of the best episodes. from TV. There's just too much to miss in the form of references to the TV show. This trilogy is the perfect intro for Star Wars fans looking to get into Star Trek, mostly because JJ Abrams(who directed the first two) is a Star Wars fan and directed these movies as such. The creators of this trilogy were also nice enough to set this all in an alternate timeline, a lesson I wish most modern Trek would learn from.
I know you're unlikely to see this but I recommend checking out Old Trek and the order that I think is most understandable for newbies(which is always contested by some Trek hardliners) is watching it all in-universe chronological order. Which in my opinion goes like this:
    -Star Trek: First Contact(movie)
    -Star Trek: Enterprise(series)
-Star Trek: The Original Series(series)(I recommend finding a "best of" or "must watch" episode list for this one)
-Star Trek: The Original Series movies(there are 6)
    -Star Trek: The Next Generation(series)
-The first 3 Next Generation movies(you can skip First Contact here since it was the first thing on this list[there's time-travel involved so just trust me if this seems confusing here])
    -Star Trek: Deep Space 9(series)
    -Star Trek: Voyager(series)
    -Star Trek: Nemesis(movie)
I would avoid any modern Trek, they don't really hold to past lore or Canon, and are honestly not up to par with classic Trek. And of course finish this trilogy out before anything, the third is my personal favorite. LLAP 🖖

Hey Jen, Star Trek and Sci-Fi in general are such a great conduit to postulate on human emotions and interactions in the future. Humans react the same way to unknown environments and circumstances since the dawn of time. With fear and trepidation. Since the future is unknown, the palette for world-building is infinite when it's come to sci-fi. Then place likable characters in that environment with dramatic circumstances and we get a very compelling storyline.

I grew up on Star Trek (original series) and came into this film with trepidation, and I was overall happy with this. I enjoyed the early cast and the honour and respect paid to the original series. Zachary Quinto did a marvellous job as Spock and Pine actually looks like a very young Kirk in my head anyway. And as an Aussie, shout out to Eric Bana as the Romulan bad-ass... mind you, still waiting for the next promised film.....

Lifelong Trekkie here! I actually think this movie is a great place to start for new fans. It has modern sensibilities while sticking to the core emotional resonance of the original characters, and even though it’s full of Easter eggs, a new person doesn’t need to have seen any of the previous TV shows or movies to understand it.
You should definitely finish this movie series before moving on to the original, because this trilogy is its own thing. But once you’re done here, if you want to know more, there are many places to start.
The original Star Trek aired in the late 1960s, and while its special effects haven’t aged well, it is still full of many great stories, and introduced the original versions of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, Chekhov, etc. You wouldn’t need to watch the full series, though. There are many “Essential Episode” guides out there to follow.
After the original series came an animated show and a series of 6 movies starring the original cast. Towards the end of the movies, a new TV series (Star Trek: The Next Generation) was launched, with all new characters on an all-new Enterprise, set roughly 100 years after the original series. That series eventually got its own movies, too, AND spawned two spin-off TV series - Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.
All of those series ran for 6+ seasons.
Then came a prequel series called Star Trek: Enterprise, set 100 years BEFORE the original show.
And now (whew), there are currently 5 - yes, 5! - brand new Star Trek shows running: Discovery, Picard, Prodigy, Lower Decks, and Strange New Worlds. All of them have some connection to the original shows, and even explore new genres for Star Trek (animated kids’ show with Prodigy, and animated adult comedy with Lower Decks).
Needless to say, there is A LOT of Star Trek out there. I love all of it, but some fans prefer the classics over the new stuff.
Either way, it’s a heck of a good time. I believe that Star Trek at its worst is still better than most other shows. It’s stayed true to its guiding vision of IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations) for 50+ years, and that’s not something most other franchises can claim.
Live long & prosper, and welcome to the Trek family!

I’m very happy that you have started to discover the amazing Star Trek universe that I’ve loved for so long, BUT, I’m disappointed that you’ve started with the reboot. Don’t get me wrong, I like the new movies, but fans weren’t thrilled that everything they’ve known and loved for the past 60 years was wiped out with a new timeline, or the fact that they rehash and change plots and characters from the original shows.

OLD TREK. Keep in mind this movie and the next two after it are set in the Kelvin Timeline, which is a different reality from all the other Star Trek properties (movies, television shows, etc.). So there is a lot of references/homages to actual Star Trek in this that you would appreciate more if you watched them, but there are serious differences as well (as you noted). However, this movie is still a good intro to the franchise for some one completely new to it (unless you started just watching the Original Series television show). I would highly suggest that before you watch ST: Into Darkness, you watch ST: The Motion Picture and then ST: The Wrath of Khan. That will help you contrast both this movie and Edge of Darkness better.

The main reason being that "Star Trek: Into Darkness" heavily homages "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan". You don't necessarily need to watch the original TV series as "Star Trek: The Motion Picture(1979)" is an excellent jumping on point. It is a much slower paced film though. The middle four films, or "Next Generation" films; Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis do require at least watching a dozen or so key episodes of that series to fully appreciate. They don't do as good a job giving the full cast proper spotlight and feature only two characters fully. Live long and prosper.

Hey Jen, welcome to the Star Trek universe. There are those who are lovers of all things Star Trek (a.k.a. "Trekkies") and those who are Star Wars lovers (a.k.a. "Warsies"). I am a great lover of both.
I definitely and highly recommend watching the other two Trek films along with some of the original series/movies as well. People on your social media and UA-cam handles will give you the appropriate suggestions on which to watch to help move you along accordingly.
    Some facts about the Enterprise:
"The Enterprise was originally going to be named Yorktown, but creator Eugene "Gene" Roddenberry was fascinated by the aircraft carrier Enterprise and had 'always been proud of that ship and wanted to use the name.' The NCC-1701 registry stems from NC being one of the international aircraft registration codes assigned to the United States. The second C was added because Soviet aircraft used Cs, and creator Matt Jefferies believed a venture into space would be a joint operation by the United States and Russia. Jefferies rejected the numbers 3, 6, 8, and 9 as 'too easily confused' on (television) screen; he eventually reasoned the Enterprise was the first vessel of Starfleet's 17th starship design, hence 1701. "The Making of Star Trek" explains that USS means 'United Space Ship' and that "Enterprise is a member of the Starship Class". Licensed texts, on-screen graphics, and dialogue later describe the ship as a Constitution-class vessel."
I look forward to the next Trek reaction(s)! 📽❤️🚀

The Star Trek fandom is ancient and massive, so naturally there are a lot of opinions about each series and film iterations. A lot of warring passionate opinions in the comments, I'm sure.
Personally, I love that you started with the AOS films! While I understand many of the reasons why old trek fans have beef with these films, I don't share them and I love both TOS and AOS for very different reasons. I love that they went the "alternate universe" route with the time travel, because that separates the stories of these characters from the original series in a neat way, and now we can have multiple versions of these characters I love without making unnecessary comparisons! It's a win-win!
The AOS films and all the fan content they inspired definitely have a special place in my heart.
Also, love that you immediately became so invested in Spock, his dual nature and his and Kirk's friendship, when those are pretty much the driving forces of why the original series has always been so loved :D

Of course, the ideal way would still be to just watch all of the original series first so that she gets to see the great dynamic between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy and grows to love them as characters. Yes. Great intro into the Star Trek series. I'm a fan of the originals but the movies mostly work because they were a tv series. They weren't the most action based. This flips things on its axis for the masses with cute nods to the OG.

I certainly hope you venture into the original movies. They are worth watching and you don't really need to watch any of the original episodes for them (Space Seed is one that you will get recommended a lot before watching Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan). If you do venture into the four "Next Generation" movies, it is highly recommended watching a few of the TNG episodes prior to the movies.
Also, if you loved the music in this movie, you'll love James Horner's score in Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.

OLD TREK!!! OLD TREK!!! (From an old guy who was a fan since 1966.). This one is okay for what it is, but it really is more like a Star Wars action adventure with Star Trek characters and ships. To really understand ST, you have to go back to the Roddenberry originals.
The second and third of the new films don't have a lot to recommend them as QUALITY stories, and are really a travesty to the original stuff (TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise).

Late to the party, just starting the video, and i already KNOW you’re gonna love it. It’s just great fun!
Something they did that was very clever was to completely reset the Star Trek universe and everything that happened in the original series (TOS), by changing everything with the time-travel mcguffin. So then they didn’t feel obligated to “remake” the events of the old series (or movies). Though they do still run into an “old friend” in the next one. 😉

Even though I grew up watching "old Trek" (re-runs through the 70's and 80's), I think the JJ Abrams reboot did the original justice, especially in the recasting of the original characters (especially Karl Urban as Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy - brilliant performance). One thing I thought was really cool and very chilling was the realistic way the went from all the noise, alarms and screaming to complete silence when crew members aboard the Kelvin are sucked out into space during a hull breach. I thought it was a very impactful moment during the battle. And for the record, I say finish the other two Abrams "new Trek" movies, then move onto the original movies. Plenty of Trek to go around! Live long and prosper. 🖖

This is a good entry point for bringing in new Trek fans. I'm a 1st gen Trekker(I started getting invested during TNGs 3rd season). This(09, Into Darkness and Beyond) is an alternate timeline from the main series. That includes(in chronological order)the 9 episodes of of Short Treks(which weave in and out of the following entries), the Cage(the first Trek Pilot), the first 2 seasons of Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Where No Man Has Gone Before (the second Pilot), The 75 episodes of the original series, the 24 episodes of the Animated series, the first 6 films(those are most of the Old films), the opening scene of the 7th film, the 7 seasons of Next Generation, Deep Space 9 and Voyager as well as the rest of film 7 films 8-10, Lower Decks, Prodigy, the last Short Trek, Picard, the 4 seasons of Enterprise (not the finale as that is TECHNICALLY a TNG episode) and the rest of Star Trek Discovery. That is over 800 episodes and films. That's a HELL of a prospect to start. Unfortunately of the first 10 films only 2 are "friendly " to newcomers. Btw the last time I marathoned it in order(before the Discovery era started) it took me 1 year of near constant watching
