    Scrappy is one thing, but the color combo is what truly makes this quilt work! Definitely something to keep in mind in my future! Colors don't need to match, but they do need to harmonize to create your wonderful effect! Thank you!!! 🤗

    After seeing at least 4 videos of different quilter's versions of this 2.5" strip quilt, I decided to go for it on my own. I only had leftover strips from other projects and a lot of strips. So for my first quilt, I pulled out all the strips that had pink in them. I didn't want clumps of the same colors in the quilt, so I divided them by dark, medium, and light colors. I then sewed them together after joining them all with straight seams instead of diagonal. It turned out to be a nice large lap quilt. I still had a huge bunch of strips left. I divided them into dark, medium and light as well. I also cut the 40"+ strips into half to have more variety within the quilt especially since these weren't curated into a jelly roll. I ended up with two tops that are at least 6' long - I had my husband or son hold them up so I could photograph them. As they were both 6'2" tall and the top covered them from floor to top of their heads I knew they would be big enough for them.
    At this point I was pretty much done with most of my 2.5" strips except for some that would have taken over the quilt top as there was so much of them. I have not put on a border or quilted them yet. But it was fun and relaxing to just sew without having to think much about it. Then I opened up my 2" strips and sorted them from whole width of fabric from partial strips. I am cutting the whole strips in half and keeping the other strips at 20" so I will have a good mix of the colors and strip sizes. By my mental calculations, I think I will get at least two tops from them. I want to give these quilts to my sons, DIL, Hubby as well as me for Christmas presents. I have chronic health problems and I think this is probably the last chance for me to do a mass sewing project like this. I am having fun as well as thinking up ways to make this easier, use up fabric so I can get into my new fabric that has been waiting a long time to see the light of day. I love making scrap quilts but I have never felt that just because a quilt is a scrap quilt that it should be just a hodge podge of fabric. I like to see if I can make it look as if I had thought about fabric placement. This is such an interesting project with different ways to make it. Each top I made, I changed what I was doing a bit.
    Thanks for the video.

    I am so glad to see that you pressed after the first run. It is SO important to press at that point, and so many people do not do it. If you press the double strip at this point, you will already have HALF of your pressing done for the quilt top! It is MUCH more difficult if you wait to press all those seams until you have stitched everything. (I actually press between every run, but I realize that is way too much for some people. LOL)

  • @MichelleFrazier-ze3xu
    @MichelleFrazier-ze3xu Рік тому +11

    I have done many jelly roll race quilts and everyone always loves them. I think the trick is to stick to a colorway and also alternate value in some ratio. For example, I will do 1:3 low to high volume or the reverse. Often the commercially sold jelly rolls do not do this justice and I actually think when you make your own from your scraps or something that you assemble it turns out stunning. Sewing these is so very therapeutic, as is cutting them. You can do the math to figure out how many strips you need and modify as necessary.
