This Is Why Wout van Aert is one of the world's most powerful cyclists

  • Van Aert was born on 15 September 1994 in Belgium, Herentals, Flanders, to Henk van Aert and Ivonne Boeckx.
“We gave away the best of us to Wout... And we are left with 'the surplus'” his father joked.
When his parents were asked asked about where Wout has inherited his traits, his father Henk replied. “Both of us, I think. We have given away the best to our Wout and are left with the surplus ourselves. (laughing heartily together).
No immediate members of Wout’s family were involved in bike racing, Rik van Looy was also born in Herentals, Flanders. He won all five of cycling’s one-day classics, two world titles and the Tour de France’s points classification.
Although one of his father's cousins is Dutch former professional cyclist Jos van Aert.
    Early Career Success.
Wout van Aert first made a name for himself during the 2011-12 season, when he won the junior race at the Cyclo-cross Ruddervoorde in Belgium. He continued to win regularly and finished second in the Belgian and World Junior Championships.
At the start of 2013, he won the U23 Cyclo-cross Superprestige, along with overall second place in the U23 World Cup, behind Mathuieu Van der Poel.
Jos Van Aert and Mathuieu’s father Adrie Van Der Poel had rivalry of their own through the 90’s.
How was Wout able to adapt to the road?
A high VLamax enables cyclocross riders to be explosive. The Glycolytic energy system produces high power. This energy system burns carbohydrates. It turns glucose into lactate. While doing so, it creates energy (anaerobically). The more active this energy system is, the more lactate it produces. Therefore, the maximal lactate production flux, (VLamax), of a rider tells us about the maximum ability of that rider to produce energy or power via the glycolytic energy system.
“My VLamax was too high” - Wout van Aert
A high VLamax means that more carbohydrates are burned quickly. The Glycolytic system prepares the carbohydrates to fuel the Aerobic system and produces energy in doing so.
An increase in VLamax will increase the amount of carbohydrates burned (limited source of fuel) and therefore decrease the amount of fat burned (unlimited source of fuel),.
When VLamax decreases (dashed line), an athlete will burn less carbohydrates (red line) and more fat (green line). When VLamax increases (solid line), an athlete will burn more carbohydrates and less fat.
“For a relatively short cyclocross race this might not be a huge problem,” as Van Aert explains. “However, when you burn all your carbohydrates in the first hour of a 6-hour road race, you have a serious problem.”
The VLamax of Wout van Aert was too high to properly switch from cyclocross season to road cycling.
“Lowering VLamax keeps my sugars (carbohydrates) for the final, so I don’t waste them already in the beginning.”
A decrease in VLamax will also increase the Anaerobic Threshold (FTP). “My high VLamax had a positive effect on peak power, but a negative effect on a high steady pace”
There is an optimal VLamax for every race. Winning a race often requires a high power attack or sprint. Just because someone with a very high VLamax could benefit from decreasing it, does not mean everybody should aim for the lowest VLamax possible! You need a minimum VLamax to win a race!
Wout van Aert implemented workouts that target a decrease in VLamax.
“FatMax training involves: Four uphill repetitions of 20 minutes around 350 watts, 3minis on high cadence, 2 mins on low cadence.”
Wout’s coach on the likelihood of him winning the tour.
Wielerflits asked van Aert's coach, Marc Lamberts, about his opinion on the possibility. He explained. “If you look purely at power, Wout is just as strong as, for example, Greg Van Avermaet. And he pedals the same power as Sep Vanmarcke. But will he still achieve that power after 250 kilometres? This may be feasible in the long run, but it will take time," he said.
For the question, can Wout van Aert win the Tour de France one day, Lamberts is clear. “Top 10, that's possible. But he cannot win the Tour. Unless there are no steep uphill finishes and the Tour stays away from the high mountains.”
However Lamberts explains that a normal preparation would not be enough, as Van Aert's body composition is not that of a climber, and would have to undergo serious changes if he were ever to be in a true battle for a Grand Tour.
“There is about 0.6 watts per kilogram of body weight difference between Wout's threshold and the threshold of the best classification riders. That's a lot. Moreover, Wout has no fat reserve, so you can't get it there either," he explained. For now van Aert can enjoy his and Jumbo-Visma's incredibly successful Tour de France.

I truly don't believe he could contend for the overall in the Tour even if he wanted to. While he has shown he can climb well enough to win a mountain stage, I don't think he can climb well in the high mountains day after day like you have to to win the GC. He might hang for a while like Julian Alaphilippe did in 2019, but eventually I think he'd have a day where he would lose significant time.

Wout is fantastic to watch, but he is also an unbelievable team member. When he is in Jumbo he gives his team the X-factor, because the good relationship between members is visible and I think it has other teams in awe. They know this team ride for each other, often at the expense of individual goals. This was very apparent in the recent TdF?

Undoubtedly?? Pogacar has won 2 monuments, finished 4 in Flanders (that he could also have won), has won Strade Bianche (6th monument), has won TDF 2 times, has a total of 43 career wins and he leads the UCI ranking. This compares to Wout’s 38 career wins, 1 monument, no grand tour victories and second on UCI ranking, so I would say there is some doubt. Add to this Pogacar is younger. Then look at which races Wout can win. Not many of those that Pogacar couldn’t win also. But if you look at races Pogacar can win, not all of them Wout can win. I love Wout, but his results aren’t there yet to make him the greatest now and especially not all time either. I would actually rather have Van der Poel’s palmares than Wout’s and I would argue Evenepoul has a greater potential than both of them and almost as good results already now as Wout. I would also throw in Alaphilippe and Roglic. They both have very impressive victories (but has been set back this season). So based on results and potential I don’t think it is unanimous. We should look beyond just this Tour when establishing who is the best rider. But wow is cycling great right now!

Why would he focus on Tour de France when he has teammates able to win it. From a team perspective it makes more sense for him to aim for Flanders or Roubaix, heck he could very well target a win in every cycling monuments like Merckx or Van Looy. What he's already achieved at the Tour is already mind-blowing, there aren't a lot of people able to win a bunch sprint, a mountain stage and a time trial in the same Tour de France.

He can if he transforms like Chris Froom or Bradley Wiggins, and if he rides in the style of Miguel Indurain: not winning mountain stages but being more consistent than pure climbers, and benefitting from long time trials. Abraham Olana, Tony Rominger, and Laurent Jalabert also come to mind, and even Remco Evenepoel despite having a totally different build should approach stage races like this. However, he can win sprint stages, classics, time trials, the occasional mountain stage from an attack, championships, and get jerseys (even polka dot), so why sacrifice all of that to be an underdog for the GC, which others are built for without having any other choice?

There is also a counter example in form of Tom Dumoulin. After being a stellar time-trialist, and coming close to winning the La Vuelta, he decided to transform to a GC contender. He won the Giro after that, but arguably, the pressure to perform on an even higher level was just too much, probably both physically and mentally. Unfortunately, he already quit once, came back, but now, looks to be quitting for good aged only 31.

Since 2005 however, riders have all been under the 70kg mark. Despite not being possible to achieve for Wout, he has proven to be an outlier on many occasions, with performances that are simply incredible, uphill too! I'd like to see him given a chance at a GT. As a leader, conserving energy, and when it mattered in the mountains, he may be able to keep up with the lighter guys.

      @brcrowing Рік тому +1

It’s possible there is doping, but the technological advances in frames, wheels, clothing, etc. as well as advances in training, nutrition, and recovery cannot be ignored. Also, the stages are shorter and the racing strategy is completely different. Knowledge of lactate levels in mml (below 2) allows for a greater volume of training without less injury and overtraining. Wout also races year round- so he gets tested more often than most riders. Armstrong rarely raced, so he could cycle his doping and anticipate when he would be tested. He peaked for one race-the Tour de France. Wout is doing grand tours, cyclocross, one day classics, etc. It’s super hard to dope for that long a period or time. I ain’t saying Wout is clean (or anyone in the peloton ) but his progress has been consistent and progressive.

There have been a few recent tests/studies to see what effect the latest bike technology had/has on performance. All the results showed the same thing, almost no change. I think it’s also important to remember that the amount of races you do, does not dictate how many doping tests you have. Armstrong was one of the most tested cyclists ever and he was never caught. Hence USADA’s ‘reasoned decision’. It was a reasoned decision because there was no failed test. Wout van Aert, by his own admission is not a GC rider, due to his size/weight, yet he dropped Pogacar on a climb. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.

To add to myself... I think that was the most exciting part of the TDF 2022. WVA dropping Pog. Something that seemed impossible!

It's a case study isn't it! Able to win a GT, then seemingly unable to reach the same heights since.

    Hes really good.
But I dont get when people are talking about him being the worlds best cyclist.
The worlds best roadcyclist is determined at TDF every year. Its not the green jersey, its not the polka dot, its not the white jersey. Its yellow. When sagan was overhyped too I dont get it yes he was really good at what he did and was the same type as van aert. But they are not the best cyclist, that requires being able to pull the watts per kilo in the mountains too. If he was as strong as Indurain in TT and could defend himself in the mountains sufficient to hold the lead then yes he would be the best. But he cant He has just found the niche where he is the best which is long sustained power output not involving too much uphill as then then the kiloes start to weigh him down. Too high lamax as stated.

He’s not necessarily the worlds best, sure is one of them! You’re right In you’re thinking, in order to be considered the best he needs to win grand tours.
