Thas what people not realize. WvA and MvdP are riding bikes against each other since they were little kids. They both have huge respect for each other, press is trying to make them mortal enemies.

Being born in Belgium is great for this, seeing Wout finish second to Sven Nys at the age of 18 in (I think) his first cyclocross with the pro’s was amazing, they also had a tv show called ‘Container Cup’ were atletes from all branches of sport had to do several exercises, including a 3km time trail, Wout destroyed the time of MvdP with 10 seconds (also leaving behind guys like Remco Evenepoel/Greg van Avermaet,...) think he had 500 watts average during that 3km, absolute monster

Nicely done 👌 As a WVA fan, I recall one important moment that defined or started his TT career, beating Tony Martin (still at his peak) in 2016 “Ronde Van België” prologue stage. It was a very short stage but still very surprised to see Wout suddenly on top in one of his first big road races. He is a powerhouse, able to perform high numbers during longer efforts. Possibly underestimated at that.

4 tyre punctures was not won due to Wut being so good. After every puncture Mathieu extended the lead. Here Mathieu was easily the better of the two, Wout did a great job for sure but to say Wout did not win because of tires is nonsense. The next year was a true masterclass of Wout, Mathei was very good Wout was head an shoulders better.
Point to make here is that in Cyclocross and in classics Wout and MAthieu seem to diverge: Mathieu became WC in 2019, 2020, 2021and 2023. Wouts last was 2018. In classics Wouts last win was in Amstel gold I think in 2021. Mathieu has won three classics and two cyclocross champioships since 2021. That is statistically at least the case. In real life Wout came very close on several occassions but missed out do to being slightly less powerful or having bad luck like this Paris ROubaix. I do feel he will win Roubaix, he could have done so yesterday. ROnde van Vlaanderen: he is not going to win that one ever. Lombardia otoh he could win. Liege Batogne Liege too in short: I still see win him 4 out of five monuments. I don't think Mathieu is going to win LBL and Lombardia.
But he has surprised me and I am sure a lot of others more than once.

I actually think you may have given short shrift to Wout in 2020's TdF. The important thing there wasn't that he outsprinted some guys; we all know that he's strong. But when he got on the front of the mountain train and SHELLED the pure climbers-like, just absolutely rode everyone off his wheel-that was unexpected. That was a sign of things to come. He didn't win that stage, but it was the truest sign of his versatility. Who else do we talk about that climbed mountains and won sprints and crushed the classics? I don't know if he'll ever win the Tour. Probably not. But everyone will keep their eye on him all the same.

@@WideAnglePodium It's ok, but it's just weird that in English don't pick the simplest pronunciation: ART would be pretty close to how you say it in Dutch. Nevertheless, great video.
I think WVA is a fan favourite because when he's good, he's excellent, but you still see the struggle. MVDP is brilliant too, and arguably the better rider of the two, but when he wins he degrades the other riders and it's like he's in a league of his own. The beauty of cycling is that you don't have to pick sides, as there are 120 in each peloton.
My favourite moments of WVA would be: 1/ Strade Bianche 2018, the breakthrough on the road; 2/ the sneaky 2017 WC victory, securing the rivalry forever; 3/ the 2020 CX race in Dendermonde: a mud festival where he proved he was still an old-school CX rider.

Iam just fan of cycling, and then of course fan of Sagan, because he was the one, who brought me back to this sport. Iam pretty sure that Sagan risk too much, but how many times he lost just because somebody blocked him intentionally ? So i understand him. But those things happen all the time, I saw many times riders get angry, but...middlefinger ? Calling him Monkey ? If you call monkey some afro rider, you are in jail in west :D But calling monkey Sagan is totally okay ? Van Aert had one big problem - his manners. But thats what Sagan and others are talking about years...younger riders had no manners comparable to older ones. World is changing and so people - new generations are no to humble and well-educated from home...
