  • Tadej Pogacar | ‘Physiological freak’ and master tactician with serene calmness.
From the perspective of his parents, team manager and coach. They describe Tadej Pogacar is a physiological marvel, master tactician and supremely calm in every situation.
It is these three attributes that make Tadej such a supremely talented bike rider, able to dominate on the world stage.
    Early life
Tadej was born, 1998 in Slovenia. His mother a Teacher and Father a factory manager.
Pogacar and is brother as children were very good at unicycling, Tadej’s mother said. “Like clowns in the circus. They were famous around here, many people watched and admired when they came by.”
These unicycles were stolen, marking the end of unicycling for the Pogacar brothers, and the beginning of life on two wheels.
    Cycling and racing passion begins
When he was 11 and racing against 14-year-olds, national coach Andrej Hauptman, a former pro who rode for Italian teams Lampre and Fassa Bortolo, turned up to watch one of his races.
He was concerned to see a small boy riding alone half a lap behind the peloton. He asked why the organisers didn’t ‘put him out of his misery’ and withdraw him.
‘He’s not half a lap down, he’s half a lap up,’ Hauptman was told. Within another lap or so Pogačar had lapped the bunch.
He would then go on to win Tour de l’Avenir,(‘race of the future’) one of the sport’s most prestigious under-23 races.
In 2017, aged 21, he was fifth in the Tour of Slovenia behind Rafal Majka, Giovanni Visconti, Jack Haig and Gregor Mühlberger. A year later he was back to place fourth behind Roglič, Rigoberto Urán and Matej Mohorič.
    Signs with UAE
UAE-Team Emirates showed their interest early, tracking Pogačar for more than a year. There were also links through Hauptman. he had raced for the team in the early Noughties, when it was sponsored by Lampre, and talented Slovenians Luka Pibernik and Jan Polanc turned pro there from his Radenska team. Pogačar also signed up with Hauptman’s former agent, Alex Carera, who has worked with champions like Chris Froome, Thor Hushovd and Vincenzo Nibali.
    Professional debut
As is indicative of his career so far. Andrej Hauptman, was once asked about the big challenges Pogačar has faced, about his struggles. He’s never had one,” he replies. Nothing? No crashes? “Never a problem. Always alert, focused, in the right place at the right time.
Pogacar lost his passport on the day the team was to depart Australia after the TDU, which just so happened to be independence day, a national public holiday. Tadej didn’t panic however remarked Team manager Peiper: “I saw how relaxed he was under pressure and I think that's one of his strongest traits.”
As the 2019 season progressed, it became clear that he had a gift for stage racing to go with this preternatural calm. His contract was redrafted after he won the Tour of the Algarve. It was followed by sixth place in the Tour of the Basque Country and a first World Tour victory in California.
    Pogacar Physiology
Pogacars trainer Iñigo San Millán described the Slovenian as a “diamond that needed to be polished,” when he arrived at the team. “From testing, his recovery capacity on a muscular and mitochondrial level was judged to be exceptional. Blood analysis shows he’s ready to race hard again after a few days, when peers are still exhausted.”
Such capacities are part-trainable, part-genetic. His parents were asked where they think Tadej’s physical and mental abilities come from, his mother Marjeta refers to his grandparents, lifelong farmers who did football and gymnastics in their youth. The whole Pogačar family helps out in the fields when required. With no machines, it’s long hours of manual labour, harvesting tons of potatoes or caring for their cows. “I think it’s important. The children saw that you have to work to have a result,” Marjeta says.
In an interview with Iñigo San Millán and training peaks, Iñigo revealed that on the “first physiological test I realised that this guy was from a whole different level.”
Tadej starts off his test at much lower lactate levels than anyone else Inigo has tested. “He starts tests at 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1, 1.1, 1.2 minimals, they are at 3 minimals. By the time he’s at 3 minimals they are at 6 minimals. He will be well below threshold when they are above threshold.”
“His suffering capacity is huge. His head is calm, relaxed. He never gets nervous. His a master tactician.” In the tour of California he wanted to know who his enemies were for the next days mount baldy stage. He told Iñigo “I wanted to see how they were breathing, look at their faces. I realised that there is no threat here for tomorrow, that he only had to worry about the two riders who attacked on todays stage.” Having that mental capability under pressure at such a young age is showing maturity far in excess of other riders his age, another factor in how Pogacar is able to win the worlds biggest bike races.

He's very strong, but there are other strong riders. We've seen Jonas Vingegaard drop him in this year's Tour and is now matching him pedal stroke for pedal stroke. He needs to learn to race smarter. He's used to being able to just ride away from people and he can't do that with Vingegaard. He needs to stop wasting energy sprinting for fourth place.

    • @ighsight
      @ighsight 2 роки тому +8

Cycling is a team sport, and Jonas V is benefitting from a stronger squad that has helped him conserve energy so that he can match Pogacar's moves. That was what happened the day JV took the yellow jersey from Pogacar- UAE lost 2 key riders (at least one that day), and Jumbo Visma had a 3 on 1 vs Pog in the final climbs. They attacked him again and again until he tired and Jonas got a 2:20 min lead on him that he was able to hold onto for the rest of the race. Wout Van Aert was just an all purpose beast supporting Jonas the whole time.

@@ighsight Exactly. Why is it that nobody is talking about this aspect of Jonas winning this years Tour de France ...they just keep saying how amazing Jonas is, when the fact is that yes, he is a great rider, but Tadej still was Amazing against the whole Jumbo team, without as strong as a team of his own. He was only like 3:24 behind Jonas at the end if the tour, & 1 hr , i think ahead of the 2nd place in the Young riders competition, & a lesser rider would have been blown away by the Jumbo team. In my eyes, Tadej is still the all around best. And, if he gets as strong as a team as Jumbo, next year , then look out.

Just to be in the Tour de France, you have to be special. Then to talk about the most talented rider in the race is of course a pretty amazing rider.
I think back however to many of the 'amazing riders'. I think back to all the buzz about Egan Bernal. The future of a cyclist is always an unknown with all the talent in the world. He sure is good though. He seems to suffer less on the bike compared to his contemporaries in my observation. We have all watched him look 'fresh' when completing stages and quick with a smile. Not an ounce of stress on his face. A gifted rider for sure.

Sucks that injuries have taken the last few years away from him but his win at the Giro last year gives me hope he can challenge guys like Pogacar and Vingegaard for Grand Tours in the future.

The generation of alcohol and rider seniority getting gc leader are over , a transition like professional football from beer kebabs to wine and pasta 😃. He really does have a great riding head which enhances his physical attributes . I have doubt but I hope he's just a new wave of riders benefitting from latest fitness science. This new wave of riders is undoubtedly benefiting from enhancements in aerodynamic efficiency, in terms of the kit that they wear and bikes they ride, in addition to nutrition as you mentioned. Then again, the peloton has adopted both, so you would expect to see the gains negated between riders. I think it's the innate qualities of these riders, as Tadej's trainer says in the interview, he's 'extraordinary' biologically.

Yea so many excuses about Poke-A-Car that its sickening - Oh he blew up this and that - Jumbo Has a miracle team that if Poga have had that bla bla bla - Vingegaard in 2021 was never going to ride the tour de france he was their as a reserve for Tom Dumolin but he withdrew from that race which gave an out of shape Vingegaard the opportunity to help Roglic - a month before Jonas got injured and was very ill prepared - Roglic crash in that tour - Jonas were suddenly unexperienced the captain for Jumbo and end up 2nd being out of shape due to only training for a few weeks. This year he wins it in superior fashion - 2 mountain stages and a TT he could have won easily - Hes young still 25 and has several years he can develop further - if I were Poga or Poga fans I would sleep bad at night thinking about future tours - Jonas Vingegaard is a beast an APEX monster with no competition - and the lot of you still have no idea how good he is - so lets look at future results and compare afterwards - mark my words he's gifted beyond anything you can imagine - perfect physique for GC proven in medical tests - I can only say good luck to all the Poga fans - you're gonna need it 😝

Pogacar cannot be the greatest of all time unless he increases his racing schedule of the Grand Tours and wins them all. Then all 5 monuments and at least winning 🏆 one of those 3 times in a row. The manner of his wins would occasionally need to change like perhaps a win in freezing rain by a large margin like Bernhardt Hinault in Leige Bastogne Leige. Getting the 1hr record at any altitude would be another test. His recuperation is certainly Eddy Merck. ..ish . So POG if you want to be the GOAT all you really need is the desire and the best cycling gloves money can buy. Can you do it?

I think people forget about Merckx's palmares - multiple road world champion, multiple grand tours winner, and a former hour record holder! TP is yet to demonstrate such variety. People tend to make these kinds of comparisons way to soon into a rider's career. Every rider is different, and every generation is different. It's unfair to compare Tadej to whoever is considered the G.O.A.T, because even that changes like the seasons. I trust he doesn't give two hoots about who's comparing who with whom.

@@jeschristensen8965 Today about 30-40% of riders in the peleton pose a race winning threat, back then maybe 10%. compare it to F1s Fangio: he won 5 Championchips against mostly bad drivers. Today science eneables every athlete in the peleton to use their full potential and if you are not on that very day, you wont win. The margin for error has become a lot lot smaller and with specialist sprinters, its simply isnt possibly to win sprints for a 65kg gc rider anymore. Also there is a lot more proffesionals these days, that means that every race you go to, you will meet athletes that have prepared for this and only this event and are fresh and ready and know the course off by heart. So wake up, you cant keep coming up with the argument with the amount of races he has won and compare him to todays riders with that, times have changed and the statistics he has produced cant be produced anymore, it is simply not possible. And btw im not saying that he isnt the goat, what im saying is that comparing him is complete nonsens. If you are going to compare strenght, thats okay, in todays numbers hes matching todays pros at above 6w/kg or below Ganna 6, MVP 6, Bernal 6,5,Pog 6,3(6.7w/kg over 24 min).
