  • The Sound Couple is back to a familiar bar with a familiar band to come together and put on another great show!
    In making this video, a concept popped to us that sums up what we all should strive for in our shows....and that concept we call is "Total Performance".
    So, what is Total Performance? Total Performance is the sum of good input + good output....It is looking at the big picture and not just the pieces. It's awareness, practice, gear, show, listening, production.. and on and on.
    We are each responsible for Total Performance and to be aware of their parts in what's important to our show....With everyone contributing with their best good input +good output, the best show possible is created for your Total Performance....this video is a demonstration of just that!
    The Sound Couple primarily use PreSonus gear featuring:
    PreSonus UC Surface
    PreSonus CDL12
    PreSonus CDL18s
    PreSonus 32R
    PreSonus SW5E
    PreSonus NSB Stageboxes
    PreSonus AVB-D16

    During soundcheck, when everything is sounding pretty good and cohesive, a lot of people would be tempted to stand back and admire it, but that is the moment I start making fine adjustments - EQ, reverb, compression, seeking clarity, presence, and naturalness, to get as close to a 'live album' sound as possible in the space. I want people to have a memorable experience they will treasure for the rest of their lives. When I run sound in my church, I want the sound people hear from our band to be an expression of the glory of God, just as our band plays and our singers sing so that their performance will be an expression to the audience of God's glory.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  7 місяців тому +1

      Agree with you in principle, but with the type of gigs we do, our approach is a bit different. Sound check's main priority is to make sure the band is comfortable on stage...and then paint broader strokes with FOH ensuring we are mitigating trouble spots both on stage and mains. With all of that addressed, we can then focus on the details during the show with the bodies and energy that a performance brings...both of which can't be replicated during a sound check and will change anyway when the show starts.

    Fully agree with your concept. It makes for a far better show when everyone focuses on what they need to. I work a lot of mufti-band/multi-act shows, which means lots of changeovers of course, but it also means over the course of time I get to develop what I am doing, but also to see other people develop. One lady in particular has just turned 20, I have mixed for her dozens of times over the last couple of years, and she's gone from being a very nervous performer to one of the most confident and competent singer/songwriters I have ever worked with. I've also become better at what I do because of her. I don't think there is a secret sauce as such; I strive to do my best every time, and keep on learning.
    Regarding the power throughputs on lights; that's a deal breaker for me too. I had a load of moving heads until very recently; I got rid of them for a couple of reasons, the main one being the fact they weren't powerful enough for my needs, but the second item on the list was the lack of a power passthru... rigging them was very time consuming and also very untidy at times, especially as they were never rigged the same way twice. I have more IEC splitters, and IEC cables of various lengths than I know what to do with... The saving grace now I don't have those movers is the fact I can leave two trunks of cables at home.
    Edit: On the topic of truss, it is a major pain in the ass if it's much more than a run of truss with crank stands. If you can get by without it, get by without it. It takes ages to build, ages to strike, and it takes up a huge amount of space. I worked a festival this year where the company I was working with decided to run trussing; we ended up with three cargo vans full of gear, a trailer stage and two full box trailers which contained trussing and stage decks. We had a 1 day build, 1 show day and most of the third day we struck the stages and moved it all out. For 6 people that was three non-stop days.

    Just discovered your channel and have to tell you how much I enjoyed watching this video. I was exactly you from the mid 70s until around 1985 in Sydney with a successful small sound and lighting company in what was the golden age of Aussie live music. Hundreds of pubs and clubs putting on live music almost every night of the week. I absolutely must compliment you on your professionalism something my wife and I took great pride in during a time when it wasn't the norm. We ran what we called a double four way. stereo out front with 6,000 watts, 2,000 watts of monitors and 100 cans of lights on very heavy old fashioned trusses. I would reckon that our subs weighed more than your entire speaker system lol. Oh and everything was alalog of course. We sold up when our son was born. Now in south Florida playing trio gigs mixed on a ui16 with the Mixing Station app and in a Praise Band with an x32 that could desperately use your expertise to sort it out. Look forward to watching more of your escapades.

      Thank you Paul! There is no doubt that modern gear has allowed us to keep going with this. We sold off all of our amp racks, dual 18's subs, road cases and analog consoles over the past years. We receive some comments on how we move some of our current gear and it's too heavy...it's all relative as you there was a day when all of the gear wasn't heavy, all of it was really heavy! OMG some of the analog consoles that bands hauled around...big as grand piano! Appreciate your comments!

      @@thesoundcouple I was pretty sure you were working during those days. We did 90% of our shows with three people. Me, my wife who ran the lights and Pete the monitors guy. Sue took it as a matter of pride that she could lift the subs or boats as we called them. Especially in the very macho Aussie scene. We also worked on Cher’s 1982 tour but that’s a story for another time.

    Loved the new dual-stacked lights at the back - very effective. We offered truss mounted lights and it was a lot of work for little gain over your new setup which had that big stage look. The thing with lighting is that it can become very expensive (and bulky) very quickly when you do more than you are offering.
    Great job as always.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  8 місяців тому +2

      Thanks Alastair...you nailed it. There are ways you can streamline trussing, but it adds a lot of complexity, additional space and time...and then you need the stage that can support it. From a business perspective, we just can't justify it....+ Stacy will quit. What we did here I think was huge bang for just a bit more effort. Appreciate you recognizing that and understanding our position.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  8 місяців тому +1

      I just want to add that there are different styles of trussing....there is light duty trussing that some bands and DJ's use that is portable and "easy" to set up....for us, that would not be the look we are going for...so we would either be all in or nothing.

    • @alastairkeith8553
      @alastairkeith8553 8 місяців тому +1

      We started with some ADJ ‘light bridge one’ truss which was lightweight and relatively easy to move but always looked a bit rubbish. The advantage was that we could use a thick drape as a stage backdrop.
      We moved to F34 Global truss with large jack stands which was great to use but took ages to set up, cable and hang the lights - it also meant we always had to take the trailer and the truss took up loads of storage space when not in use. I loved doing those larger gigs (the stage and lighting effect looked great) but they were so much more work to set up and they didn’t really pay a lot more than the smaller band gigs did. Best to keep it simple.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  8 місяців тому +1

      That's a good question and there really isn't a simple answer. It depends on:
      - Budget
      - Room and space
      - Type of event
      - Looks
      - Band
      But most importantly for us, we don't want to abuse our gear by over working it...so if there is a chance for that, we will error on bringing in more.
      Knowing your system is important and with that and understanding the event, we do get it right most of the time....it kind of sucks when we don't. I think we have brought in more gear mid show if we just really missed the mark.

    29:07 When recording a live set, how do you deal with all the external sounds in the room that bleed into the mics (general crowd noise, stage noise, etc)? Are you just recording raw audio at the event, then tweaking it later?
    Also: Does the band hire you (in this case Rhino) or the venue? I would assume that it varies, especially if you have a good relationship with a band.

    • @thesoundcouple
      @thesoundcouple  8 місяців тому

      Mic bleed is just an artifact that is reality and it's part of the recording that hopefully can be managed. That said, we CAN get better recordings with this band with less effort because of the in-ear/no amp setup that assists in minimizing bleed. In fact, you could argue that too much of the live element was removed from these recordings. The point here was just to demonstrate that with the right circumstances (good input + good output), it's easier for us to achieve good outcomes with the live mix or recording. We would put more effort in the live performance needs for mixing (overheads, etc.) and mix down if it was part of our engagement ...we were just having fun and practicing here. Most of the gigs we do are working for the band.

      Ahhh…got it. For our lighting system we use Luminair to control our lights. We commented on the wrong video…sorry about that!

    Quick question for you, do you have issues with iPhones connecting to the mixer through QC mix. I cannot get mine to connect even though the iPads and computer connect all the time.

      Our experience with the iPhones has been a good one. Is it possible that your router's DHCP server is not scoped for enough IP's? Will the phones connect when the other devices aren't on the network?

      @prodigy2music Місяць тому

      @@thesoundcouple It doesn't show the mixer at all when connected to the router

      @@prodigy2music You need to confirm that the phones are connected and on the same network. Make sure they have an IP address in the same subnet as the mixer. From what you are describing, this is likely a network issue at this point.

    Four subs and four tops for a room with less then 250 people is not "simple" to me. I understand this is your normal set up that works well for you , not me.
