The Sound Couple didn’t need Noah’s Ark at this gig, but with rain covers for the CDLs, a new iPad, and plenty of in-ears for the band, Bart and Stacy turned the production at this venue into a success. Bart’s written on-screen comments help lead us through the many learning opportunities at this venue. Thanks to The Sound Couple for another truly helpful and entertaining video.
Hi Dean - thank you as always, for your continued support. Every video is an adventure and it is interesting to see what we are able to extract, especially when we are unsure where it's going....some good stuff here.
I have a pair of sandals that I leave in the van. I know people like to leave flip-flops but those things are just not safe. Don't forget an extra pair of socks!!!! There's nothing like running around a wet gig getting in the car drying your feet out and putting fresh socks on for the way home.
Thanks again Bart and Stacy. Once more the 7 P’s are as valid as they ever were. Putting out the spot fires is what our businesses are built on. 🤘best wishes from Peter in Australia.
Stacey, you are such a little work horse. I just started watching your video's and love them. My pool deck is a EV subs and heads and Yamaha mixers, but I still wish I had some of your equipment. You both have taught me so much. By the way, that was a great band/lead.
Appreciate the comments! Yes, I would agree...I would put her up against anyone on a load out! We feel so lucky to work with so many great bands and musicians!
17:28 Dustin Lynch - small town boy mixed by Billy Decker..... i recognized this banger in the Backround hahaha, we sound guys hear also the same Music and i'm from Europe, love you guys
Yeah I know that feeling. Had a one day of a multi weekend gig this year get canceled due to concerns of heat/ humidity. I was looking at the weather thinking well it's gonna be terrible during Soundcheck but once that's done it's gonna get really nice and sure enough that's what happened. The worst part I got there really early to set everything up before the heat came, which is exactly what happened. Than I had to tear everything down but we at least got to check a couple of things.
I wouldn't mind a video of what gear you used to use. We dropped heavy amps (EV P2000 and P3000 with EV X(i) Array series 31:17 ) somewhere around 2003/2004 went all in on d&b D12s en Q-series with Max for monitors when needed. We were already using digital mixers by then. I quit somewhere 2010/2011 after just being fed up with it but we were still using the good old Par 56 and Par 64 back then, accompanied by the obligatory moving heads and more than adequate stage lights for front lighting.
We have thought about it and do have some ideas so it's on the list of future videos. We still have some par 38's and 46's, but the rest of aluminum cans we literally gave them away, including dimmer packs....There was a lot of money invested in those!
Thanks again Bart and Stacy. The drum sound is top notch. Haven't you thought about buying sliding surfaces to slide divers on wheels and avoid steps? Best wishes for a Merry Christmas from Gorizia, Italy.-
Yes, we know someone that actually does it at this venue. For us, it's just more to carry and store. With the two of us, we just want to get in and out...this is a low budget gig! Thanks for continued support!
I've worked with the Barringer system and a little bit with the Avion system. It's nice but it puts all the control on the artist. I really like the hybrid approach because it still lets me jump in and see, here and adjust. Good point about setting it not to turn off forgot about that, that's a pretty good reason on its own.
Yes! We were all in these cabinets and were sad to see them go. We set a new direction switching to a more compact powered speaker so someone got a great deal on ours!
Thanks for the food ideas, also looking for practical things. I've had some good burgers but sometimes they're just two handed and you don't know until after you've ordered. I always tend to order some thing and have it finished just about after the band starts the first song back from break.
At 15:15, can you tell us which setting of the effects you used on the SL III Fat channel and how much of it to make that dry vocal to wet? All of your Effects (A,B, C, D) are all applied. Can you please explain where they are applied? To the Aux sends? If so, where and what those effects are and whats the order of their application? Thanks.
Hey Bart & Stacy, big fan from Australia here. I’m only 14 and you guys have inspired me to start my own production business. Got any tips on how to successfully run my business?? Anything would help! 😊
Buy second hand gear ...you'll get so much more value for money... I started my local business in Aus at 17yrs And now after 5 years have Around $30K worth of decent gear spending nowhere near that much.. The main way I got clients was word of mouth and making good musician friends.. Best of luck :)
Agreed, second hand and check out local venues for what equipment you may need. E.g. a couple of JBL EON 15s and a couple of subs, plus stage monitors … or do you need to go big for heavy thumping bass gigs, or a couple of Bose Linear PAs with or without subs for acoustic/wedding music? You can spend a lot of money starting up, so also look into what to buy and what to rent. Bart & Stacy have a fairly minimal lighting rig, but it’s very effective band, but doesn’t replace a disco setup or lighting for presentations and conferences (which may also require video projection and vari-lights, plus lapel and table microphones. Don’t borrow too much money to start with, don’t spend all your income on kit, and save for your taxes. Stay away from the alcohol and drugs. Coffee and sugar are bad enough! ;)
We couldn't agree more with everything said so far. Starting out is hard but exciting...and honestly, we can make things look easy, but the truth is, some of it is not. I can think of times when I should have been fired, I have lost the gig, or I have made people very unhappy....and I have had people thankfully give me another chance. This is all part of learning. The most important thing is to be humble and learn from your mistakes and be motivated to do whatever is needed to make sure the next gig goes better....and the fact is, it may not. In our videos, we are in effect, showing you the end game which comes from our years of experience. We hope that our channel can help you learn by watching what we do and not do and perhaps accelerate your experience. If you have the the drive and skills, it doesn't take years but doing the best you can and being nice can go along ways. That's how we see this business working....your reputation and skill is key!
Thank you for your feedback. We have covered many aspects of mixing over the course of our videos...but after thinking about your question, we may have drifted a bit on this topic. Will take note for the future! Also, Heated Sound Check specifically covers mixing topics too! ua-cam.com/video/G5pYgldmU6c/v-deo.html
24:10 how much improved is the 6th gen over the earlier gens? I’ve wondered about these. I’m still rocking a first and 5th gen iPads. The only time(s) I have problems with the connection of my iPads to my router is when I’m at a show with 3000 people and I get too far from the router.
We are really happy with the our 6th gen. All of the issues we were having with wifi with the old one was the iPad. It is doing just fine in its new role as home use, but we believe the wifi on it was not up to par with other Apple products or our other devices....It took us a long time to be convinced of that.
We run everything off of our PreSonus mixer. Combination of wireless/wired (PSM 300's/Donner EM1, or PreSonus HP2). We supply iPhones running Q-Mix so the musicians can control their mix. Default is mono mix or stereo by request. We are limited as to how many wireless stereo mixes we can provide. In total, we can provide 5 wireless mono mixes and a handful of wired mixes...we have never not had enough!
Oh man...never heard that one...that's too funny because it's so true! We will never forget the day a guy with a big truck backed into the driveway and took it all away...there was definitely some mixed emotions that day. From a fleet of speakers and amps to I think we have one QSC amp laying around somewhere....never looked back!
Can you link 2 channels together in a stereo pair so you only need to push 1 fader when boosting guitar for a solo? I noticed you pushing Left and Right separately. Thanks for the great video! Still looking forward to catching you live sometime.
Yes! I just didn't that day because it fell on an even channel. However, the problem with linking is that you can't pan it then...not sure what to think about that....especially when that's what they want to do in the in-ears.
@@thesoundcouplethat is the odd thing with PreSonus, not being able to pan when stereo linked, when Allen & Heath lets you pan when they're linked! I switched from Allen & Heath to PreSonus a while ago though!
I wish we knew too! From what we can see, it looks like a real nice addition to the series....nice for smaller gigs or for some of the wedding stuff we do. The subs definitely look thumping as well!
Thanks Bart and Stacy! Question on the IEMs system... Are the iPhones connected to the 32r and controlling their own mixes? Can you add a little detail there?
