Back in my childhood, I used to watch a lot of Canadian cartoons dubbed to Spanish (since that was the main content of the "educational TV" channel I used to watch back then). I do remember this show, as well as the Donkey Kong Country cartoon. There were a lot of other detective-themed cartoons, although I don't remember which ones were done by Teletoon or other Canadian producers. There was The Untouchables of Elliot Mouse, Fennec, and one other cartoon about a detective mouse whose name I don't remember (it was not the Disney one).
I wish I had watched this show when I was a kid. Finding out about it later was an experience where I found a new show to cherish for its unique style with its art style and the use of puppets.
Dog City was one of my favourite shows when I was a kid. I watched it on Global all the time. I was born in 1986, and I was six, almost seven when I started watching it. I thought it was cool that Jim Henson did the puppetry for it. I don't remember exactly when I stopped watching it, but it was definitely before it started playing on YTV, because I only remember watching it on Global. I don't remember how I discovered it even. It was just on one day. Thanks for covering it!
This vid mad me actually look up Dog City, and while watching it I found some of the voices oddly familiar. After some research I found out why: Kitty and Frisky are voiced by Tabitha St. Germain and James Rankin respectively, who also voiced Wendy and Larry (or Kootie Pie and Cheatsy as they were called) in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. That's how you know this is high class art.
Never grew up with the show, but I wish I did. Israel got a lot of shows from Canada but this was not one of them. Still hearing you gush about it makes me want to give it a watch. Now that being said, you did wake the kid inside when brought up Groundling Marsh. OHHHHH GOOOOOOD I used to watch it all the time!
What a fantastic show, even though it completely misrepresented how cartoons are actually made, lol. I love the cartoon aspect of Dog City, Ace and all the other characters.
Wow, you must be the first guy to do a review/retrospective of Dog CIty! I loved it! Will you do a similar video with The Raccoons? Yes, I know you talked about them in a previous vid, but they deserve a vid all for themselves! Especially with the recent remaster, and the plans for a reboot that unfortunately seem to have been abandoned...
man holy shit just came back to this channel after like i was a kid, found it again in my sub box and i was so happy to see the intro pretty much be the same. it gave me a big goofy smile :) high quality too! will definitely be going through what i missed!
I was always disappointed that this show was as short as it was; my first introduction was when Ace and Elliot teamed up to stop Bugsy which turned into a rivalry to Rosy 😊
I wonder whether or not the Elliott-Ace dynamic was in anyway inspired by the play City of Angels, where there are two plots that follow a noir novelist and his book.
Hey there Malik, I’ve watched many of your videos and I’m glad you’re a more positive reviewer. I have a sound theory for the change in season 3. John Van Bruggen was only on the first two seasons and it’s possible that assistant director, Dave Pemberton took over and wanted more family comedy than the noir vibe, as looking at his IMDb credits, he was on the Ace Ventura cartoon. It’s not concrete, but I’m sure it’s the easiest answer I can give you.
Yeah, that’s what I deduced as well. I got in contact with Pemberton but he respectfully didn’t seem like he wanted to talk much about it, suggesting I speak to Van Bruggen instead. Ah well.
Dude, you make such high quality videos with a good amount of intel and research in it and it’s getting HOW MANY VIEWS? Bro, your content is so underrated, I swear. I’ve never even heard of this show or Bob and Margaret, but I’m always down to watch your videos. Also I wanted to add that the only other example of season 2 of a cartoon getting a different intro that I can think of is Jimmy Two Shoes, funnily enough that’s another Canadian cartoon. Anyways, this is a great video and the next video is about the Donkey Kong cartoon, right?
I now know it was Canadian and that is why I loved the TV show Dog City the animated version / cartoon version with puppetry! Which I loved the storyline in the first two seasons and come season 3 that's when Dog City the t.v. show went down hill and lost what was so great in season 1 and 2! Which there was an episode of Dog City in I think Season 2 or 3 where the show was going to be done and there was nothing left!
14:10 I was wondering why Frisky’s voice sounded so familiar to me, but I just realized that his voice actor James Rankin also voiced Cheatsy in the Mario cartoons
I remember this would be on at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning. 7:00 am I believe. And I would get up before everyone else in the family and start with this. Very underrated. Loved it 😊 🐕
dude Global had some amazing programming back in the day. Though I onl;y really remember them playing Cinar groupe shows....maybe a Global TV retrospective someday? :O
If Dog City ever got a reboot, they could have it where Elliott is a Computer Cartoonist who developed Ace as an A.I. program that he can interact with in real life, not only could Ace be able to assist in making cartoons, but he could even travel through the Internet & appear on any Wifi device and talk with other people in the real world, like if Elliott is having a problem Ace could help him out by talking to one of his friends on their phones or something, sounds like a decent way to bring Dog City into the 21st Century.
😅 Welp, I'm the old guy. Lol. I watched this show when I was a kid. Probably during the original run. I loved it too, so here's one U.S. guy who's not afraid to say it. Thanks for bringing this memory back.
Just found the male equivalent to UA-camr PushingUpRoses in The CartoonGamer8000, sweet. I watched Dog City on Global as a teen as they came out; they do share that witty writing that some 90’s Disney cartoons had like Goof Troop & DarkWing Duck. Sly Cooper shoulda been a series, if not a standalone movie. Thanks for the nostalgia, and tell Nintendo to remaster DKC SNES trilogy - piggy bank is full.

I feel like someone as passionate as you needs to showcase the good cartoons of Australia, because we have a pretty bad reputation when it comes to cartoons with people like PhantomStrider doing us no favours, despite the fact he's half Australian himself.
Even though i like the show I don't think it would be good to own on dvd. Adult Jokes should not be in a show aimed towards Kids. It does say youth seven years or older which means this show would probably be better suited for kids older than 7.
Yes! Someone else who grew up with Care Bears! You NEED to do a video about the shows! Maybe separate videos for each different series?

I loved this as a kid. From the UK here
Jim Henson’s Dog City is one of greatest!!!!! As a Canadian kid throughout the 90s, this was a standout masterpiece!
I got my wisdom
Tooth out. So, im gonna binge watch this whole
Series. Im in America. Probably about a couple hours from Canada
This video was AMAZING! Thank you for talking about this show!

Don’t we all kind stranger

i totally forgot about this cartoon! i still got a VHS whit the first 3 or 4 episodes dub for latin america, thanks for the video =)
One thing I’m sad about losing from the original special is Rowlf the dog he could’ve been a cool recurring character!
Never grew up with the show, but I wish I did. Israel got a lot of shows from Canada but this was not one of them. Still hearing you gush about it makes me want to give it a watch.

Groundling Marsh was one of my earliest memories of watching TV. Had to give it a mention somehow.
What a fantastic show, even though it completely misrepresented how cartoons are actually made, lol. I love the cartoon aspect of Dog City, Ace and all the other characters.
2:57 OMG, R.I.P. Kermit
Your ability to make things I’ve never heard of interesting is amazing! Your passion always shines through your videos
Thanks, man! Glad you think so!
So glad to finally have this video out!

20:43 Speaking of Mario, I *wonder* if this scene ended up forecasting anything in particular…
Probably not.
Actually upon closer inspection...
Wow, you must be the first guy to do a review/retrospective of Dog CIty!
I loved it!

I was always disappointed that this show was as short as it was; my first introduction was when Ace and Elliot teamed up to stop Bugsy which turned into a rivalry to Rosy 😊
Brian Henson did an amazing job keeping his Dad legacy alive with Dinosaur and Dog City
A fox kids classic .
As a life long Toriyama fan you get a pass Malik.
I wonder whether or not the Elliott-Ace dynamic was in anyway inspired by the play City of Angels, where there are two plots that follow a noir novelist and his book.
Something tells me it might’ve been. A film noir story set in the 40s sounds like a dead-ringer for inspiration.

Thanks for the kind words! And yes, the DKC cartoon is up next.
Now that cartoon i remember when i was young
This show for me was an extremely early and vague memory that I wasn't even sure was real.
I now know it was Canadian and that is why I loved the TV show Dog City the animated version / cartoon version with puppetry! Aw sweet I got a shoutout!
14:10 I was wondering why Frisky’s voice sounded so familiar to me, but I just realized that his voice actor James Rankin also voiced Cheatsy in the Mario cartoons
Love the video, Dog City is so unique and I love the noir style in animation
I remember seeing this on Fox Kids but I don’t remember the episodes. That’s why I plan on watching the whole series someday.

Glad to hear someone woke up that early to see it!
6:41 Dan also voiced Ralph in The Raccoons.
Nope, that was Bob Dermer.
@@TheCartoonGamer8000 Oh, yeah. He voiced his brother George in Season 5. My bad, I got a bit confused cause I knew he was a voice in the show.
dude Global had some amazing programming back in the day. Though I onl;y really remember them playing Cinar groupe shows....maybe a Global TV retrospective someday? :O
Yeah after I seen this video.
I have to genuinely this is a new favorite show
So thank you for showing me this
Oooo I immediately love the concept ❤

Dog City doesn’t need a reboot, especially since how cheep Canadian cartoons are now.
6:12 They have names you know. Kevin Clash and Joey Mazzarino respectively. And Kirk Thatcher at 7:59.
They way I wrote it, it just flowed nicer in the script. Otherwise I’d be dropping names all day.
Amazing video, I loved this show. my favorite side character was the german guy
😅 Welp, I'm the old guy. Lol. I watched this show when I was a kid. Probably during the original run. I loved it too, so here's one U.S. guy who's not afraid to say it. Thanks for bringing this memory back.
Nice. Glad you enjoyed, my good fellow!
This is a show that is half sitcom and half animation but better made than Super Mario Super Show
Just found the male equivalent to UA-camr PushingUpRoses in The CartoonGamer8000, sweet.

Speaking of Sly Cooper, it needs a movie in the style of The Bad Guys or Puss in Boots 2
I do vaguely remember this show, but i was a bit too young to fully remember everything or understand what was going on.
speaking of hidden gems, you should check out the works of Enrique Gato

20:41 there is no way that this is actually in the show! It literally is elephant Mario 20+ years before being official
Does anyone else think Eddy's outfit (in the cartoon) looks like Fievel's iconic outfit?
This video shows that this is WAY better than Little Muppet Monsters
I literally forgot Dog City existed lol.
The series also appears to be available on the internet archive, though I'm not sure what quality or if it includes the intro or not.
It's passable from what I've seen.
I feel like someone as passionate as you needs to showcase the good cartoons of Australia, because we have a pretty bad reputation when it comes to cartoons with people like PhantomStrider doing us no favours, despite the fact he's half Australian himself.
There’s good cartoons everywhere, but for now I’ll stick to what I know best. Phantom’s just one guy, he doesn’t speak for the whole country.
I’ll assume there was executive meddling with season 3😅
I Actually Watched This In 2023
Even though i like the show I don't think it would be good to own on dvd. Adult Jokes should not be in a show aimed towards Kids. It does say youth seven years or older which means this show would probably be better suited for kids older than 7.
