Advancing with Watercolor: Creating Mood with Color "The Bell Tower at Dawn"
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 кві 2020
- This video looks at using color to create a mood in your paintings. One of the qualities of paintings which I love is the mood that they generate inside me when Im looking at them. I have thought about this in relation to my own painting and how my choices effect the mood. Color plays a large roll and so does tone. The use of lights and darks within a painting. So its not just a choice of red yellow or blue but how dark or how we gray these colors that contributes to the mood in a painting.

That’s not somber at all. I can feel the e invigorating, cool morning air with the mist of liquid water in it, and the cheerful early-birds out for their coffees, pastries, marketing, and gossiping before the rest of the world gets up. It’s exciting.
Yes...Yes I love this description - Indeed a magical time in the day :) thx for sharing
Thank you Gary.....I love your work!!!!! :-)

Beautiful Paintings. Love the colour themes.
I truly like your aquarels paintings!
Your comments are so full of insight, especially the idea of developing smaller studies before doing the main painting. I really appreciate that. Once again thanks very much.
Austin, I am glad that's helpful - save those studies - they hold a lot of potential paintings :)
Brilliant! I like it. Thank you.
Well I have come back to this demo once again after I viewed it a year ago. I loved it then but I understand what you are teaching us much better. I keep learning each week, more and more during you online virtual classes. And the one you did today of “kobaska light” absolutely brilliant

대단한 실력자이십니다
See you again!!!
Oh heck yeah.. your a awesome artist man
Thx for the kind words Kenny - they always lift me up!
Thank you Gary, we hope you are well and safe, healthy, and happy. I appreciate your videos and sharing with all. I try to stay motivated by looking at dramatic photos of nature, reading and looking at watercolor books, and seeing other people's art work. I also change from painting to something else like life drawing or some little hobby thing until my painting mind gets inspired and strong again. I have animal gesture in ink and drawing tutorials on UA-cam but I am a painter first by heart. I have faith in God and that keeps me going to know I have a purpose here. Thank you for your beautiful painting today! Wow! Amazing! 💖😍👍😊
Thx for the kind words - yes happy and healthy in Boston as the pandemic is reaching a peak. I stay at home and the days pas quickly - are filled with painting...study and the occasional movie ha ha. new routines.:) best to you and your circle
beautiful painting!
Thank you so much 😀
очень интересная палитра, захотелось попробовать такую.
Thank you
So happy and grateful I found your work. Your generous sharing of experience is so well done and appreciated! I've been looking at so many pieces of watercolor art I actually, for a brief second, thought your paint tray was perhaps another study of a bird in a colorful garden. I will go find my glasses!
ha ha ha Well Nancy I guess it could be a blue heron! Thank you for the kind words - I am happy you are getting something from these videos
Thanks a lot for your words, I am living in Spain now and your pictures give us a place for confort. Mis seis and huges for all of you. Frank.
Frank- thanks for the message - Hard to watch the suffering day in day out - painting helps :)
Gary Tucker is it possible to send you one of My watercolour paintings ?..
thank you Gary Tucker
Subscribed to your channel. Thanks for the great lessons - your work is very inspiring to me.
I'd first like to thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement for us in northern Italy. Our fourth week in lockdown is challenging but we manage to see the big picture, be positive, and I keep painting.
As for painting, I sympathize with your student's frustration as it gets me down sometimes but you said something very true. I look back as some work and realize I do sometimes paint fairly well. An example in point is my S.M Della Salute church, after your tutorial and using my own reference photo. I even mounted it :).
Two keys words in your tutorial today are 'envision' and 'imagination'. This at least is my failing and perhaps for others too; that of being shackled to 'what's in the photo'. I need to change my approach. Thank you again and take care.
Thx for taking the time to share your thoughts Barbara - I am glad you are safe and that Northern Italy is slowly emerging towards the "New" normal - what ever that may be...perhaps I could add one more word "Immersion" seems to be a key in internalizing your subject. Thx so much for sharing
best
Gary
Not that you need to be told, but your work is absolutely beautiful. 😊 Thanks for sharing your talent.
Thanks a lot sir. Stay fit and healthy. Respect from India.
Thx - good health to all
Stay safe and healthy, God bless you 🙏
Wonderful work... I was fascinated by the way you wield the brush, producing such bold strokes. I am also struck by your grasp of light and shadow. Some of the pieces you showed in the first clip were very reminiscent of Sargent. Very enjoyable!
thx Cocktail - your comments lift me up!
Thank you Gary. Another great tutorial - so much more than “how to”!
Thx Robert !!
Thanks Gary, for all your wonderful guidance in watercolor painting and your thoughtful message during these difficult times. I’m so disappointed that I didn’t book my place on your virtual zoom class earlier as it’s now at capacity. Please keep your regular videos going, if you’re able, for those of us who aren’t able to join you.
Will do Sheri, I am glad we can communicate through the web - I will be starting a new series on interiors - stay tuned...
Thankyou for all your wonderful tips and techniques - I am taking on watercolour as a new challenge being of a certain style.
Thx Anna - I am happy to read your enthusiastic! Keep watching for more videos and exercises in watercolor

Great to meet you Gary. I just started a channel in watercolor painting for our watercolor society. It's a great use of time during this crisis. I'm glad to have found you! Best ~Al
Albert -Nice to meet you as well - A great idea - I am sure your members will enjoy the connections and camaraderie ...
Thanks..
Very useful. One thing I would like to share. I find it really helpful if the reference photo is there on the screen to observe constantly how you are interpreting each part of the reference landscape in the painting.
Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback Sarower. I will try to incorporate the reference more often - though part of my message is to internalize the reference - through repetition...

Me gusta mucho su acuarela. Yo pinto a veces óleo. Estoy interesado en probar esta técnica, que muchos dicen, es difícil. Veo en ella, una espontaneidad, frescura y luminosidad que es difícil conseguir con el óleo. Seguiré viendo sus videos con mucho interés. Gracias.
Thank you for posting this video. I am exactly at the state where your student was/is ... feeling frustrated/depressed because I feel I am not progressing enough. Good to know I am not the only one. ;) This painting is so lovely, so much mood. Remind me of Edward Hopper. You also please take care of yourself and stay safe!
Yes Bluesky - Up and down, up and down. it seems to be the artists rhythm...I am pleased you like the painting and its quiet mood
@@GaryTuckerArtist yes, the artist rythem. ^ ^ thank you!
Thsnk you, from Canary Island
Challenging. Thank you for the learning experience. I’m searching for a substitute from my palette that gives the properties on Cadmium Red Orange which I do not have. I have Winsor Newton Cadmium Scarlet (PR108), Holbein Vermillion (PR108) and American Journey Halloween Orange (PO62) and Cadmium Orange PO 20. Would one of them suffice? Or can you suggest a mix?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts while painting. I really do believe the imagination leads the brush. I was looking for the PDF you mentioned but I did not find it below the video. Can you send me a link to your PDF. Stay healthy!
Thx Deb - A great phrase - "the imaginations leads the brush"

Gary, on that winter theme webinar on April 11, , will it be nature or with man made structures in it?
Tina - the theme will change every 2 weeks - this weekend is a bucolic scene in Boston on a winters day - with skaters... learn more here www.garytuckerartist.com/virtual-workshop-april-25-26/
Hi, Gary, from Northumberland, England! Thank you for this enthralling video tutorial 💖 Just one quick question, what masking tape do you use, please?
Bruce - its the standard here in the states 3M 1/2 inch
Thanks for the pdf. Lots of food for thought and experimenting. May I ask a totally unrelated question. I struggle with painting shadows across landscapes, especially grassy fields. They always look so flat. How can I make them look more realistic. My second question is shadowing in trees. Should I shadow in blue (or the sky colour at the time) or gray the green with its complement red. I find sometimes my tree shadows look dull. Thanks so much:-).
Deb - yes a lot to talk about with shadows...2 important aspects to shadows is the way they change - darker at the point of origin and fading as they move back, and their transparency - after painting a shadow it is important to return and capture some lines or textures to make the shadow "feel"transparent
@@GaryTuckerArtist Do you scrape or lift out to improve transparency. With grasses I was thinking of doing a few scratches at the edge and trying to vary the transparency of the shadow across the grass.

I have Winsor Newton Cadmium Scarlet (PR108), Holbein Vermillion (PR108) and American Journey Halloween Orange (PO62). Would one of the or a mix of suffice?
Amy probably the Vermillion with some cad yellow or halloween orange will give you what your looking for.
Thank you ! That is exactly how I have been feeling, like I am not progressing. I am not motivated ! Help!!!!!
I am starting to adjust now connie - I think the shock stage has subsided ...staying busy helps...
Hello! how do I access the pdf? I wish this was on Gumroad too. thank you
