Advancing with Watercolor: Color Strategies

- Color is a such a large and interesting subject related to painting. Supply companies would have you believe that you need every color they manufacture but honestly you only need a few. Getting to know a few colors well is much more useful than another tube of this or that. This video explores some of the ways the artist trains themself to observe color as well as some of the strategies a watercolorist uses to plan their painting. in particular how they layer color to take advantage of the watercolors transparency. More detail is provided in the pdf file below...

In the next episode of Advancing with Watercolor I will paint another scene from Venice. - Campo San Barnaba - - Навчання та стиль
It’s wonderful to watch the details appear, such as the subtle pained figure in the foreground
Many thanks, Anne

Thank you for this bright spot in the day, Gary. Made me feel like getting behind the brush again.
Im happy to hear it - best Gary
Beautiful painting and informative tutorial. So much to learn. Everytime something new to learn. Thank you so much.
Thank you for how you taped this session. For me, seeing the details of your painting setup and watching your brush loading the paint clarified a lot for me. So thank you. I would appreciate more videos shot like this.
Margie thx for sharing that with me - It is so helpful to know the different angles are helpful
Another very nice painting, Gary, and thoughtful comments for the people of Italy who are overwhelmed by this terrible pandemic. Thank you.
Thank you so much from Italy
Thank you for the compliment- I had so many beautiful experiences while traveling in Italy -I was always welcome like family - now its so hard to watch the news...
fantastic work
thank you for sharing !
This is a totally different level and approach to painting an outdoor covered market scene that I've ever seen. The atmosphere is ethereal and conjours up the almost musty smells that one could imagine from such a place.
I'll definitely have a go at something like this, paying special attention to the three concepts you've demonstrated here: mother colour, light bounce and transparency.
Amo suas aquarelas Gary !
Im amazed by your vision 🤔
Very powerful use of tone and colour. There's a really striking illusion of bright illumination streaming into the hall.
Great painting. As usual you make it look so easy. Stay well. I keep boredom at bay by painting and watching you terrific videos. Thanks, Gary!
Lisbeth, Thank you so much 😀
Beautiful. Thanks for talking about the idea of a mother color. It's not talked about and/or perhaps not well understood by artists. I've been trying to rap my head around it for a while now.
I love your style of paintings - without painting any details, your painting conveys the details through a beautiful match of hues and tones.
Thank you Suresh - I appreciate your impressions
Thank you so much for this. Please do another paint along soon. I was unable to get into your first one. You make it look so easy.
Thanks Sandra - I will offer them every 2 weeks for the time being...You can see more here

You make it look so free and easy to do. As a beginner I realize how long a journey it is to get to that point. Enjoy your videos thank you for sharing your insight. You are a master watercolor artist.
Thank you Russel - It is a journey I started as a kid - and I still feel the same joy and enthusiasm...I feel I am so lucky the way

항상 즐겁게 감상합니다~^^
Thanks again for a wonderful painting , I'll go try my luck using the same technique. Also my thoughts go out to all affected (especially) in Italy. While not infected myself I'm in self isolation for 14 days in Australia having just returned from oversea's. We will get through this and travel again, stay safe Gary and continue to bring us your entertaining videos.
Thx Graeme - I appreciate your self isolating...Self isolation produces some interesting side effects such as more painting time - a chance to reflect, and appreciation of the small joys in life :)
Merci bcp pour cette belle démonstration
love it !!!
Great video and beautiful painting. Your art is a window on hope and your generosity a powerfull connection. Thank you so much Gary also for the final message to my country. In this hard days we use to say "andrà tutto bene" (wich means "everything will be allright") take care to everybody

Hi Gary, I have only just come across your beautiful work. Thank you for inspiring me to take up watercolour painting again. Your style is exactly what I was looking guidance on and I am going to use the furlough downtime to reacquaint myself with painting. Paul Bradley.
I am pleased to hear you are embracing the media - a great use of your down time- hope things turn to a more stable situation soon
Best
Gary
Gary your painting as a good lesson to learn the new way of presentation the interior painting. I will try your way for my painting, using mother colour to unify the whole picture. Thank you for giving hopes and brightness.
Fifi - You are very welcome - painting give us some diversion from all the challenges we face now

Very bold colours, very impressive work. Very sad what is happening in the world right now. I met a lot of good people in Puglia.

Thank you sir, prayers from India
Lots of love n wishes for u n ur country from Pakistan..
Thnku for such a great lesson
That painting gives a wonderful feeling of that reflected glow of the drapes Gary. I'd like to know if you decide on a mother colour for all your paintings or just the ones where you feel there IS an overall colour. Should we have a colour in mind?
I still haven't got used to how you begin a painting- the drawing that's just a scribble and such powerful colours that amateurs like me would panic over.
Maybe this confidence takes time.
Thanks for your kind thoughts. Painting helps me and others here take our minds off this difficult time.
Barbara - great questions always - I look for that mother color most of the time because it is so helpful to create unity in the painting - yes most of my drawings are very simple which in the long run allows me to say more with brush work :)
Loved watching this. You make it look so easy. Any tips for a beginner with watercolor?
draw, draw, draw, and paint what you want :)
I have that same brush and I hate it as it always has too much water at the tip. Nice work.
Masterful use of transparency and adding to the visual dynamics. Before you did the final work did you have to experiment with the darks to understand how much of the red underpainting would come through, or did you just know based on all you experience over the years? Wonderful work. Wishing you the best.
David - several rehearsals with mixed results...but many lesson in the process :)
Excellent painting 👍 Gary sub and like 👍 😊 👍
I have seen this scene painted often in videos, but you explained your approach so well Gary. Thank you. One question: you put a lot of pressure on your initial red brushstrokes. What was your purpose in doing so?
Thx Maria - I press the brush into the paper a little bit to gain a little control of the rough edge that is creating the portico. this works on a first layer or on a painting that's bone dry - if its wet you can lift the paint...
Hi, Gary. This was lovely! I wondered if you had any suggestions, online tutorials perhaps (?) for improving drawing/sketching abilities -- the perspective and architecture aspects of this piece were quite interesting and I admire your fluency in mastering a good sketch. Hope you're safe and healthy. Best, Andrea
Thanks Andrea - I have not looked for much in the way of UA-cam offerings for drawing though this is where

Gary Tucker wonderful! I will check it out. Thank you. I tried to incorporate your technique of illumination in my own composition using a lily pond. I would enjoy learning how better to attain clean lines and washes, perspective and painting shapes, defining them in watercolor. Thanks for your time and guidance.
Gary Tucker I am also interested in how you think about the techniques needed for a certain painting/composition: yellow ochre wash vs ult marine blue or other washes and how much detail can be accomplished while first wash is still wet, second washes. Dry brush. I imagine compositions require varying techniques; which comes with time, practice and talent?! :))) thank you
Lovely painting. Which black do you use? Looks like mars black. ??
Neutral Tint by sennelier
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏽
Sorry to be confused about the mother color in this painting… Is it the cadmium red orange that you are using in the awnings? Or is it the blend of the three colors that you used to make the near black color?
Yes - red in general is the mother color here…red was mixed into most of the colors used - including the dark balck
Beautiful video 👍 LIKE 213 from AAMIS COLOUR WORLD.
a good strategy
Bless you Gary and those close to you, at a time when humanity would rather delete it from our shared evolution. Your work inspires myself and budding family members also, so please continue to share this great work, we love you! from the UK.
Thank you George - for the kind words - I am pleased to hear you are enjoying the videos :) best to you and your family
