The WILDING of the shrew.
😂😂😂
Very clever!
I SO love those little guys, they are truly a gardener's best friend!!!
First year we bought our house we had an INSANE slug and earwig infestation that destroyed our gardens and flower beds... following summer (I guess we were more slack with the leaves piling in some corners than then previous owners had) these little guys start popping up all over the place. Years later we still have not had any bug problems. Now I purposely keep some sections of our yard inviting for shrews, especially around my orchard, garden and flower beds. They keep everything safe from both bugs AND rodents (they actually kill and eat mice), and don't even touch our crops since they favor protein packed foods...its truly fantastic! There's no longer any mice in our walls and attic either since these guys have taken over the area!!!
Not to mention, its always cute to see their little noses poking from under dead leaves when I'm gardening lol.
I absolutely adore this insight, I shall start incorporating shrew homes in my own garden

I wouldn't want to kiss one. But your comment, is so cute😁.
@@justacatwhocantype Indeed. These are actually super pests here. They were introduced here to rid our trees of an infestation of spruce budworms and became a bigger problem. We introduced snakes to manage the shrew problem... the snakes couldn't survive the cold and died... shrews are now everywhere... and infested with ticks and worms and carry diseases. I had to remove one from my home once and while happy and alive, it literally stank of rot. This video one is cute for sure but this is not the norm for this animal.

This is my first time ever seeing this animal. She looks like a little Pinocchio mouse. Lol. Too cute. 💕
They are voracious insectivores. The amount of food they consume is insane. I am not positive, but I think only hummingbirds consume more by bodyweight.
They’re monsters. The only venomous mammal in North America, they are vicious creatures capable of killing and eating even snakes. As well, they are impossible to keep as pets unless you get extremely lucky (as this woman did) and find them as babies, as they will can’t acclimate to human contact, once feral they will always be feral, and are incapable of having affection for us. And they have vicious front teeth, similar to a rat’s.
They look cute and fluffy from a glance but trust me they are anything but. Horrible pests.
@@bimlauyomashitobi421 they’re not pests, they don’t cause any problems and being venomous and eating snakes doesn’t make them horrible.
@@theworthysoul They literally are pests. Just because you want to cry and ignore reality doesn’t make you right.
@@bimlauyomashitobi421 what makes them pests?
I didn't even know shrews were a thing
They're a relative of moles, and are a very primitive mammal that were around when dinosaurs were, or things very similar to shrews
Also they eat 90% of their body weight hourly
humans are actually believed to be descended from a certain ancient tree shrew, not "monkeys". that made sense to me that it would be a creature that still had a fear of heights, not one that doesn't seem to.
All primates evolved from that shrew-like ancestor which includes great apes like humans as well as monkeys and lemurs and such.
Actually , slow lorises , vampire bats and platypuses are all also venomous.
These cuties ruined my cabinet and their poop smells like death itself. Id rather have them outside in the field but not in my house
Awwww, shrews are definition of "little but fierce" 😍

I'm still figuring out how anyone could find such a tiny creature on the side of the road? Maybe Shrew Barrymore squeaked or something? She's so tiny you can easily overlook her. Cute little critter.
In the UK cats and dogs discover !them ,also we now have volunteers monitoring wildlife and volunteers clearing areas of plastic, organised by surfers against sewage a charity founded when the water in the UK started to become too polluted

A year ago, I took care of a baby mouse for about a week that my sister found in her basement. The vet said it was time to could release him so I released him in the woods with acorns all over the ground. I also left food for him.. I hope he is still alive and doing ok.
Hes dead
@@jacksamunster4407 Yeah, just like your empathy and kindness to others.
@@jacksamunster4407 I hope not. :(
depending on the species they can live up to 7 years. usually longer in captivity though. mice are prey animals and breed extremely fast. so if something did happen to the little fella, im sure he/she probably has plenty of babies out there.

Really needed to see this. Yesterday a neighbour brought me a baby shrew she found on the sidewalk (People in my neighbourhood mostly know me because I always take care of hurt birds and orphaned hedgehogs). The little one is currently next to me in a little box with a heating pad and I really hope they will make it. Seeing this little shrew grow up gave me some hope for my baby :)

Drew did seem very feisty and eager to explore. You did great taking care of her until she was ready to go out on her own. Yeah, she be just fine out there and she'll find other shrews quickly. ❤️❤️
Blessings to you for saving her life and guiding her back to her natural habitat even watching to make sure she was okay(ready). I too am a caretaker to all creatures great and small and im just as humble when these creatures are in my care i do and apply myself 100% even going without because i feel blessed and privlaged humble to protect nurture back to health what would otherwise died. I love being a guardian to the life itself👃💝⚘thankyou for sharing and never stop caring your a natural.
Shrews are interesting lil' creatures. When I became aware of them as a young child (after being shown one, they live in the backyard sometimes) I was a little bit scared of them just because my mom warned me about their bites and stuff, so I guess I saw them as strange mysterious baby-rat-mimic lookin' (I had rats as a lil kiddo) creatures who I should never touch. I've long since become more familiar with them, so they're not as much like vemon-faeries anymore. It's nice I can admire them from a respectful distance (I mean, I ain't gonna go out somewhere and poke 'em) anytime I want via photos and vids, they're cool lil' weirdos.
My family once had a dog who got bit by 'em on a few occasions. She was a large dog, a newfoundland, but the venom could certainly leave a sore. I don't know HOW she accomplished this, she must have somehow laid/rolled onto one. More than once. She... uh... wasn't the smartest of dogs.
I was about to tell you that shrews _aren’t_ venomous, decided to look it up to make sure first. Turns out I learned something today, some shrews are venomous. Did _not_ know that. Thanks. ✌️
@@archgirl I applaud ya for checking, it never hurts to double-check stuff to be sure. And learning random trivia about animals is always fun. xD
Here's another one, this one I learned more recently. When ya look at shrew teeth and see they're partly reddish (which is present in some shrews, like short-tailed shrews), that's actually from traces of iron, which is in the enamel where the teeth would be enduring the most use. They're animals that have to eat a lot, so those teeth gotta last.
@@sadsackofflour2697 Interesting, thanks! 😋

it'd got to pissing me off that each of our three cats around GB's Terra Wurzel (western Wessex there) would ALWAYS catch shrews, never EVER a single mouse :grrrRrr: I've just muddled their abscent scent with moles that had in fact ended up being the cats' stinky quarrie
Now you know how we feel like, when the children leave the home, to go college or to marry or just to live apart. Sniff. Good luck little one.
Oh my goodness. I screamed when I saw this. Simply adorable 😍❤️
Hello gorgeous 🌹
How are you doing
Everyone is melting about how cute the shrew is but, I’m just wondering how someone managed to spot a baby shrew on the side of the road!
My exact thoughts!
They must have been walking and just enjoying the scenery, if you're not in a hurry too much you catch things like that. Once leaving a college class I had to wait for a ride home from my dad and I was just looking around enjoying the desert, and found a hummingbird ina puddle struggling to fly, so I found a little bird shelter and turned it in, just gotta be in the right place right time and aware of your surroundings. Once in high school I found a little mouse in our gym locker room so I moved it outside, everyone else was just too busy to notice it, and I also look down a lot because I like finding things or seeing little bugs and creatures so it's a habitual thing, too.
Walking...
I also found one idk what to feed it
Dont put it past people that are familiar to a certian stretch of road and every pebble in the road 😆 one time my bf and I stopped cause we seen something black and small crossing the road and it was squirming looked like a Wolly bear catipillar by the size. We stopped and found out it was a young vole wondered away from the nest 🙄 and we couldnt find such nest anywhere so guess who had to bring home a baby vole and hand raise it 🤣

@@anthonychihuahua cute! I have not seen a baby chickadee yet! 😍🐦🐦🐦
@@AbsolutelyAdorableStudio You possibly have? They are really no bigger than their parents when they are able to fly, except they do have that distinguishable large baby bird head and ruffly feathers for a time. So adorable. ❤️
I thank God for people like you.
I'd be concerned that she didn't get any instruction from a parent shrew on how to survive in the wild, such as avoiding becoming a meal for a predator.
Shrews aren’t especially clever. They largely know what to do by instinct, not by being taught by their parents. Shrews also have a short lifespan - typically less than 12 months so she was old enough to be released. There is no reason to believe that she would be any more likely to be eaten than any other shrew and her survival prospects at 4 weeks were almost certainly much better than they were at birth.
probably got eaten an hour after release.
the shrew is giong to starve without knowing how to eat and what to eat.
@@wurv1359 They eat what they find, drink dew. She'll be fine (or he). Their parents don't teach them survivor skills. They have them, then leave them in a week or two. It's all instinctual.
@@TerryReedMiss true but that is not what i am talking about the shrew now belives that it gets food from humans and does not know how to get water and other resources on its own. And its instects are changed becuase it was fead in captivity.
she's the cutest thing I've ever seen :')
