Lyrics:
a rand mcnally atlas, cheap coffee stained
now i wouldn’t know how to use one
with my life at stake
you were waiting on a pay phone
at a truck stop in houston
trying to call your mother ‘cause she’s a worrier
a handful of twenties in your overcoat
always rolled into a pillow
on some stranger’s floor
and you tell these stories with happy endings
only when interrupted
before they’re over
but i won’t let the light fade
i won’t let the light fade
chasing these roads into dawns
i won’t let the light fade
i won’t let the light fade
falling asleep in their arms
it seemed these highways were never ending
circling odds and evens
their numbers ascending and
searching through static on the wyoming plains
we danced to both kinds of music
as the old joke claims
i wanted for nothing i couldn’t rent
we lived on whiskey and twizzlers
and youth’s discontent with this
rand mcnally atlas dog-eared and frayed
like old testament verses
that don’t make sense in this decade
don’t let the light fade
i won’t let the light fade
chasing these roads into dawns
i won’t let the light fade
i won’t let the light fade
falling asleep in their arms
i won’t let the light fade
i won’t let the light fade
chasing these roads into dawns
and i’m holding on, holding on

“Like old testament and ‘that don’t make sense in this decade’ ” 🤌
It does if you go back to the Septuigant and study the original Greek
I didn't think anything would ever match Plans in my heart, what a wonderful surprise
This fucking song. I don't know why, but it makes me think about a friend who died this year, through no fault of her own. I saw this song live, and probably cried singing along. I swear I'll never let her light fade. I can't believe we're a few weeks away from just writing 2022 off and celebrating a new year. I don't know. 2022 was not a year to celebrate, for me.
Dude 2022 was hell. Lots of love man
Sorry, dude
I cannot begin to imagine what your loss must feel like. But, I think your friend, wherever she is now, knows what a GREAT friend she had in you. And she's smiling down on you, I guarantee it. Good man.
This is one of my favorites from this album. So beautiful. ❤
This song is perfect.
Wait... how is it possible that this amazing song has only 58k view and 41 comments in the section..?! It was part of my Canada/Quebec road trip this summer. And listening to this song while driving through the pure nature, small towns, surrounded by this strange daylight because of the fires was a truly beautiful experience. Believe it or not, but my brother offered me this Rand McNally atlas he had from 2022. As a french person, I didn't really know what was Rand McNally. Now I know as I know what is cheap coffee in the random US/Canada truck stop. Thank you death cab for this beautiful album (it's your best in my opinion).
'We lived on whiskey and twizzlers' LOL
Simply beautiful 😊❤️👍
This, just this...reminds me of Codes and Keys....Thank you, Ben! Gorgeous music
Ben has such a talent for telling simple but poignant stories with his lyrics
'With this Rand McNally atlas dog-eared and frayed like Old Testament verses that don't make sense in this decade '
Such beautiful lyrics ♥️
This album is a great listen so far
I thought of that part in Stephen King's book The Shining when the character Jack leaves his son in the car, so that he can get out and make a phone call. The little lad Danny passes the time looking at a Rand McNally map. It's a great piece of writing, actually.
Pretty. Strong Paul Simon vibe on this one.
Loving the new album! Thanks guys.
Wonderful
this is so, so good - also sounds a lot like The National
Wow I can totally hear this is Matt's voice
Can't believe I was in the first 250 people to hear this! I feel privileged.
I think I’m 500!
Congratulations to you both! Lol.
Beautiful song!
love love it
❤️
I love this song
if somehow in my life I'll be able to visit to San Francisco I want to go to this hill, nice view
🔥🔥🔥
The best song from a great album IMHO. The songs on Thank You for Today were good, but this album has a so much better sound. The acoustic version is also great btw. Not better or worse, but different in a good way. Not to be missed if you're a fan.
amazing song. I will pay someone like a million dollars if they can transcribe it for me or just tell me what is going on with the time signatures
Can someone explain the rythm or tempo of the drumming after 1:25? I cannot grasp it. It feels like its out of the beat constantly. Which is probably the intention, but combined with the bass it confuses the hell out of me. Especially around 'whiskey and twizzlers' or at 2:20.
It’s because the song is in 7/8 not in 4/4 as most songs are.
@@ozzgonzalez7165 Thank you Ozz! This means I have a lot to learn!
But the first chorus seems 4/4 still? So crazy :)
There's also some timpani drums lightly in the background, which are syncopated on a different rhythm. One of my favorite things about this song.
@@ThysRoes yes, my friend. Some math rock-ish vibes right there.

What town is that?
San Francisco
You know....the shithole run by Pelosi where everyone craps in the streets and it smells like piss
❤️
