I live in Seattle, we skate Marginal Way DIY under a bridge downtown and 11th st DIY in Tacoma. Last year I skated Burnside In Portland. That was a trip! All 3 parks, I met some of the best skater communities and they often hold fund raisers to keep building. Cops are chill around here too.
You go for it, bureaucracy makes these things almost impossible to establish officially, looks like often more effective to build it and then hope that it gets accepted by the community, awesome to see :)
San Diego's Burnside is epic. Expert park built by experts... I skated it 15 years ago and brought Zack a 12 pack (of cans) to share with the crew. Respect to the people who built it and got it adopted by the city. Epic endeavor. Good community, bring them a beer at least. 🍻 👏

There will be drinking fountains, a seating area complete with electric outlets for charging their devices, and even a little table with skate tools where skaters can fix their equipment. "Dowdy Park." It's got a nice ring to it.
this philosophy of going outside the law for positive change is present in a lot of things, reminds me of how people will make community gardens out of abandon properties that are technically illegal but still help feed local communities and support the ecosystems they are in. Really cool seeing skaters doing something similar
That slam in the diy bowl looked like it hurt. Years ago I was watching someone rip the bowl at Tigard on a bike, he was carving fast up near the coping right in front of me. His front tire slipped over the top and his mouth hit the coping, immediately knocking him out. He was still unconscious when the paramedics showed up to take him to the hospital. His mouth and jaw were pretty messed up and he was missing a lot of his front teeth. Crazy it happened just from carving a bowl.

The hardest slam I had was on a mini ramp with coping that was set up a little too high. Rock to fakie hung up and my hip hit the flat at the bottom. On big stuff I can usually fall into the transition easier and not straight to the flats.
I dont know about that bridge but we had an skatepark under a bridge here it was like 8 lines avenue street and there was another 4 crossing right next to it, it was horrible breathing exhaust smoke since then i just avoid anything next to traffic, i can still remember the smell and it was 20 years ago lol
been meaning to go check my nearest one out for a while, its Bristol, England M32.... looks sooo cool, but im intimidated as i am older and not that great.... this has given me the kick to go check it out....still a bit worried about the whole thing for some reason though.... social anxiety ay :(

In my teens I lived in Fulton Kentucky. And we had to make our own. It was the foundation of a building that was torn down. So we were grinding on steel beams. And put a street spine, and a quarter pipe out there.
A little patch of astro turf at that small bowl might be good. Just to allow you to wipe your feet when you get to the bowl so you don't get it all muddy.
so many times i would go to the park and clean it up. My room might not have been clean but i put in my work elsewhere lol. Miss skating all the time. Now i cant afford injury lool

I think any positive impact on the area is nil to negligible but at the same time I don’t see a negative impact. It’s not private property, unused. Not hurting the infrastructure or any wildlife. I’d imagine trying to use a legitimate public skate park in a big city would be hard due to it likely being extremely busy. As long as some skater doesn’t try to sue the city for injuries then no harm no foul, skate on.
We have a local diy spot under a bridge like this we call it the overpass. I haven't skated in forever but it was cool as fk that the skateshop and locals did it cos the 2 parks were beat to shit and the city wouldn't fix them

We had a skate park in my home town that was built over a ten year time period by the skaters in the woods then the town built homes there I am glad I got to be apart of that it was amazing
so many hidden skate and bike spots are destroyed by developments of crappy cookie cutter houses. when I was a kid I could ride my dirtbike all day in the woods behind my house not hitting the same trail twice now its all shitty houses

We had a gnarly ass DIY under the ST.johns bridge here in Portland Oregon but it was sadly ripped up by the city.
