@michael wright A lot of kids today don't know their skate history, that Airwalk was one of the dopest skate shoe companies at one time. I had so many OG pairs back in the early to mid 90's. That was a while before I started saving sneakers and taking care of them. All the skate shoes I bought were to skate in, and I'd buy like Nikes or Timberlands to keep nice when I wasn't skating. Looking back, there's so many pairs of skate shoes from the 90's I wish I would have saved. The Airwalks alone would be, of course, the Jason Lee, as well as the NTS, the Ones, the Jim Shoe, the Bowling Shoe, etc...
My brother worked on the set of "My name is Earl", he said he was a dick, and very rude to the film crew. Sad, because I loved that show and knew of him from skateboarding.
"Stealing Harvard" was the first time I came across Jason Lee, as well as Tom Green. Going back through their careers was super entertaining. I hope they feel fullfilled with where they are now because I know it brought a lot of joy into my life. I think My name is Earl really touched a lot of people in a positive way and lasted as long as it should have, furthermore seeing Tom Green with his UA-cam adventures has also had the same effect.
Jason Lee just did a three hour podcast interview about skateboarding, it looks like he's doing well and he's working on some TV projects as well, so we might see him back on the screen soon
I am about the same age as Jason. I started skating young as well. However, I dropped skating for surfing and never looked back. In that forgotten time period, people like Jason were revolutionizing skating, except I had no idea. Now it's amazing to see how much it has developed and needed people like Jason and Mark.
He was actually credited with inventing the Tre/360 flip (a 360 shuv it mixed with a kickflip). Of course Rodney Mullen landed the trick first but he credited Lee for creating the modern tre flip
I first saw him in Dogma and asked, "Who is this scene-stealing dude and why have I not seen him before? He is great!" And then I went down the Kevin Smith rabbit hole lol
I remember switching from Santa Cruz (Grosso and Hosoi) to SMA from the big very boards to the slimmer street style boards. My first was the Mike Valley zoo board and I shredded the shit out of it. Never went back to the big heavier decks.
I started skateboarding in 1999 (on a not so serious level, I really got into it around 2005 or 2006), so I was lucky enough to have those really easy to skate popsicle boards. Nowadays they have even lighter popsicle shaped boards with those Powell Peralta flight series decks, it's insane how much the sport has progressed.
Dude you deserve so many more subs, and you definitely have a new one here. Excellent subject matter, very well researched, crisp sound quality and captivating editing. Well done.
A lot of people comment on this video and say “he wasn’t even that good of a skater!” But like, they need to remember that 12 year old skaters weren’t doing darkslides on telephone wires in those days. Kids are so damn good at skating now, it’s unreal. The dude had style and revolutionized a lot of tricks.
I met Jason Lee at Shut Up and Skate Contest in 1993 during the Blind Days not long after he became every street skaters hero from the Video Days Era, He was super friendly at the time and his wife even chatted with us little skate rats like she was just hanging out with the boys... So much Nostalgia I'm getting misty eyed..
Being an early millennial, Mallrats was one of those iconic movies that defined the times for my generation, and I think it was too culturally relevant for critics to understand (unlike something like Dazed and Confused which was a time piece and thus something adult critics at the time could understand since they were likely teens in the 70s). Watching it back then, I knew it would be a cult classic and I didn't even know that it bombed at the box office and with critics. There was just nothing else even remotely like it, it turned the teen / early 20 something genre on its head, disposing with the lame cliches and bringing in something that felt authentic, if somewhat corny. That movie made the characters seem cool while also being hapless losers who hadn't figured their lives out at the same time, and it didn't treat comics and video games as just some side joke about nerds. Jason Lee's character was something I wanted to be but was not yet at the time: a confident guy who was comfortable in his own skin as a somewhat nerdy skater type, who was always being witty and making insightful comments. He has at least a dozen iconic lines in this film that I still love and repeat. Nobody like this had ever been made cool in a movie before, he was kinda someone to look up to in a way, an unlikely anti-hero. I never liked My Name is Earl despite really liking Jason Lee, so that was a disappointment for me. I had high hopes after finding out that he was the star of a TV show. It is too bad he never did any other TV projects. I feel like he could have been great in an adult buddy sitcom with young adults, the sort that became popular later on like Workaholics, New Girl, It's Always Sunny, etc. Or maybe his own HBO show, where he could just let the expletives fly. He could have a been a great character in something like Silicon Valley or Californication, maybe even Shameless. I'm happy for the guy to have made a fortune on dumb voiceover stuff so he could effectively retire and move on with his life, but it's hard not to think of what could have been. He is just so good at playing a witty and likable guy who you also kinda want to punch. He always felt authentic.
Another awesome video man! Appreciate the instagram posts on the progress. Can't wait to see your videos get more recognition. The passion you had for this project is inspirational. Mallratz was great! I also just watched Chasing Amy. I found out that Joe Frantz showed up on set and was a pa. He ruined the heavy rain kissing seen by accidentally setting off an alarm lol.

Wow. I was a big fan of blind boards when I started skating in the late 90s. But as time went on their boards just kinda stayed the same never innovating so I kept swapping brands. I had no idea Jason Lee was the owner back then. God I miss 90s culture. What a time to live through. Riding my bike to school. Coming home and skating and/or playing nintendo 64 then just disappearing to a friends house without telling my parents and just showing back up around 8-9pm. The world was so much simpler back then. Then 9/11 happened. I was like 12 years old at the time. The local skatepark had opened on the 7th or 8th of that september. I remember going to school and quickly realizing something was up. A bunch of kids were going home. One kid came to school late and told me "the world train center was hit by a plane" Me being 12 couldn't understand why a train station would get hit by a plane or what a terrorist was. Anyways I only cared about one thing. The skatepark. When I got home from school I begged my parents to take me to the skatepark they tried to explain why it was a bad idea but I countered with "but that means it will be empty!" I think I got my way and went but none of my friends were there. After that things have just gone downhill. Man I'd give anything to go back and live for a couple of days in the late 90s/early 2000s.
He wasn't the owner of Blind. He was sponsored by them, and they promoted him to run the company. And then he quit after a few months. Jason Lee and Chris Pastras own Stereo Skateboards, since 1992.
I remember the first time ever seeing Mallrats at a friend's house and saying that he looked like a guy named Jason I used to run into at skate spots from time to time.
Absolute LEGEND!!!! Great video dude. Jason was my absolute favorite skateboarder and overall role model. I remember getting video days and man that video was the soundtrack to my happier days. Not a care in the world just a skateboard and nothing but time. I just always remember feeling so proud of Jason for representing misunderstood skateboarders and “making it” in Hollywood with a resume of professional skater.
Cool, this was interesting to watch. Learned a ton about this guy. I honestly only knew of him from Scientology. Never seen my name is Earl. I kinda remember Alvin and the chipmunks from when my boys were kids. See, I worked so much back then (dental field) I missed everything and was never home. Never even to this day had cable tv. Lot of VHS and DVD back then tho. About ten maybe fifteen yrs ago my ex boss who is now one of my greatest friends was getting brainwashed into handing over thousands to the "church". They used this guy, Tom Cruise, Leah Remini, John Travolta ect as a marketing tool to become a high level donor. You get to hang out at the celebrity center in FL where you MIGHT run into them. I think he has since left. If so, great for him. That cult is dangerous. Woah. This brought back some crazy ass memories. YT recommends the craziest stuff to me. Any who, good video.

I would have, but discussing religious topics is extremely risky on UA-cam. People get their videos taken down all the time for stuff like that, I put a lot of work into this video and didn't want it to go to waste. Not only that, but the dude has been out of scientology since 2015, it's not my place to discuss his life on that personal of a level - I just wanted to cover his career as a skater/actor/photographer. I'm going to pin this comment because I've been asked this question many times.

Man, thanks for doing these videos on Jason. He's always been a favorite of mine.
Jason Lee is an absolute legend, I'm not a fan boy or anything but he's just awesome. Thanks for sharing.
My brother worked on the set of "My name is Earl", he said he was a dick, and very rude to the film crew. Sad, because I loved that show and knew of him from skateboarding.
Maybe just straightforward
I found out Jason was a photographer last year and he has actually released books. Pretty badass.
My name is Earl is an oft overlooked gem...
I am about the same age as Jason. I started skating young as well. However, I dropped skating for surfing and never looked back. In that forgotten time period, people like Jason were revolutionizing skating, except I had no idea. Now it's amazing to see how much it has developed and needed people like Jason and Mark.
YOU KNOCKED THIS VIDEO OUT OF THE PARK!!! Great work!
Jason is definitely a likeable dude, naturally funny. I had no idea he was a pro skater till today but the guy rips!..
He was actually credited with inventing the Tre/360 flip (a 360 shuv it mixed with a kickflip). Of course Rodney Mullen landed the trick first but he credited Lee for creating the modern tre flip
He was in a lot of skating video games I saw in video games before I saw him in movies
I never knew he was an actor till today. I still think of him mainly as a skater
@@helpfulcommenter you haven't watched Alvin and the Chipmunks?
@@TwinkleNZ Never heard of it
I first saw him in Dogma and asked, "Who is this scene-stealing dude and why have I not seen him before?
Mike Vallely’s barnyard board is worth a bit of money nowadays. If you still got it.
Jason Lee is hilarious and amazing. Perfect look and sound for film
Jason Lee is just legendary! Unlike most actor's, he can skate! Thanks
no mention of skate 3?
Jason Lee was in Skate 3... there you go.
(Coach Frank is getting his own video, working on it now 😎)
@@MediaPastimes awesome 😂 love the video man!
And Tony Hawks Project 8
That’s getting mentioned in the Coach Frank video as well, it’s basically going to be part 2 of this video.
@@MediaPastimes Can't wait brother
This was a shocker. Never in a million years would of thought Jason Lee was a skater.
**have
@@bigfranchise shut up
I just finished watching My Name is Earl and I never knew he used to skate. That's really neat and this whole video is well done subscribed.
Making a video about the sort-of follow up to "My Name is Earl" called "Raising Hope" very soon 🤙
This is the first video I've been able to watch in its entirety on UA-cam for quite some time nicely done
Lots of garbage out there, thank you!
Love Jason Lee. Always blow peoples minds when I tell them he was a pro skater
Dude you deserve so many more subs, and you definitely have a new one here. Excellent subject matter, very well researched, crisp sound quality and captivating editing. Well done.
Damn, Jason was such a good skater. He had style and pop in every trick. For that time he was really advanced.
He always struck me as a really cool and genuine guy. Kind of a Keanau Reeves type personality.
His biggest flaw was that he used to be a Scientologist back in the day. [Just like Will Smith is.] My man got a lot of flack from it.
Definitely can tell you had passion in the making of this video. Had me glued till the end. Great job!!
Disappointing that you didn't' like it, but i get that kind of humor and thing isn't for everybody
Thank you! This really was a passion project, this isn’t getting a boatload of views out of the gate, I knew that while I was making it. But I heard Joe tell that story on Raab’s podcast, absolutely hilarious story.
@@MediaPastimes Never worry about the numbers man, just be patient it will come. Focus on that passion and people will catch on :) Yeaaaah dude I was watching Raabs podcast for my Bam project. Raab is such a positive guy, love that podcast.
Yep! I wasn't sheltered to bad events in the world prior to 9/11 but that was the event that changed my worldview forever.
I recently discovered Jason Lee’s incredible photography. It’s great that he can just keep following his passions/interests and be successful.
I'm subscribed already??? Gotta turn my notifications on I dig this
You might be subbed from years back when I went under the name "RadioBamFan" (I'm guessing). Either way, much appreciated!
Lol, goes to show how much these professionals really don't know. Mallrats is one of the best movies ever made! Kevin Smith is a genius!!!
Absolutely, and it makes me even happier that him and Pastras are still running stereo together.
Jason is one of those actors who I’m not obsessed with but anytime I see his face I immediately want to watch because I love him
why would anyone be obsessed with an actor :o ??
Yeah he's been seperated from the church since 2015, really glad he got the hell out of there.
@@MediaPastimes I wish you had put that in the video instead of the comments.
@@JViz Discussing religious topics within a youtube video isn't a great idea, you risk having your video taken down. But for some reason commenting about them is okay? Weird rules.
@@MediaPastimes I didn't ask that question. But I absolutely understand that. Scientology has a big reach and many lawyers. Your video would have been taken down. This video was awesome. I have been watching My name is Earl clips. It's so very good. Gonna subscribe because you are the awesome!!
I'd watch Mallrats over Clerks 1 any day. Those guys are nuts
i respect that but you are actually trippin
BOINK! " That's for canceling My name Is Earl". LMAO
Had to watch it like 5 times lololol
I really liked this video a lot! I love Jason Lee, and Paul Rudd. Two of my favorite actors, I often get them two confused. Great sense of humor in both of them..... great video bud!
I’ve always loved Jason Lee as an actor but this video made me love him as a human being.
Thank you for this. I sometimes wondered how Jason went from skating to acting. I didnt know used to be a pro skater till I watched On skateboardings Rodney mullen video. Mike V talked about how he thought Jason invented the 360 flip.
Now I need to rewatch chasing Amy since it's been so long I forgot about Ben afflecks goatee.
Glad you enjoyed it, I always wondered how no one made a video like this prior to me. Jason has lived a cool life, can’t wait for his interview with the nine club coming up.
@@MediaPastimes it was a good interview
Surprised you didn’t mention his stint in Scientology.
@@MediaPastimes I'd say that was a good call, I really enjoyed this video it was interesting and really well made. There's enough controversy in the world, it's refreshing to sit and watch a small documentary that stays away from it.
Yeah I dont think thats an integral part of the story so I dont think its a big deal. Love the video as is.
@@MediaPastimes I haven't watched yet, did you talk about him naming his kid Pilot Inspektor?
@@melgibson1284 lmao no, but I respect him for it. He got that name from a lyric by the band Grandaddy, and they rock.
Mallrats was awesome.
It's without a doubt one of my favorite movies, but I also understand why it wasn't universally loved.
Great Video. Mallrats was my favorite movie when I was a teenager back in the 90s; I still enjoy watching it along with Dogma.
Just picked up the Arrow Video 4K version recently, I probably revisit that movie 2-3 times a year.
Loved Jason since the blind days. It's so great to see him make it and do it so big.
Mad respect to skaters. I tried it but turns out I had big, fat, (and flat) slow feet. May have pulled off one proper ollie in my short attempt and totally wasted that sweet Wu-Tang deck I had back in 97'... 😆 🤣
I never knew a lot of this! Great video, also, just realized me and Jason have the same birthday!
Dude, I knew him as a skater and as an actor but had no idea it was the same guy. Thank you for educating me on that!
What an incredible nostalgia trip and fantastic insight to one of my childhood favourites
Thanks Nathan!
He's been my favorite for a long time ! Sooo glad I have a signed deck from him and photo 🤙
Gawd, i miss Skate videos! They were awesome in their own ways!! I remember Jason from the skate days... He just wasn't around for to long like most others
Jason! Awesome in Smith movies! Almost Famous! Vanilla Sky! and of course Earl!
I know im missing a few good ones
The year was 2001, I was a sophomore in high school, and I discovered Mall Rats. It was brilliant and the “stink palm” was the absolute most funny thing ever. Because of Jason Lee in Mallrats, I discovered the other Kevin Smith films. Great video man!
Seems like such a good dude. I gotta rewatch My Name Is Earl. I remember my dad watching it on TV growing up and I'd catch parts of it here and there, but never really gave it a fair shake.
I never knew that Jason Lee was a skater and was born in Santa Ana CA. I though he was just a actor from the show My Name is Earl. I remember seen a character in the Tony Hawk 8 skate game. Thanks you for the video.
Surprisingly good.....i was about to pass out but then i saw the title of this vid so i was like "Oh holy shit, i didnt know Jason Lee was a pro skater" and here i am at the end of the video. Great job on the vid man, i really enjoyed it! 👍
Jason Lee is an actor that deserves so much more notoriety as everyone knows him when seeing a picture of him from something but doesn't know his name
Jason Lee is literally my entire childhood it's almost hard to describe how many facets he's affected from skating to mallrat and the incredibles to Earl and underdog everything it's crazy
Excellent video. I've always liked watching Jason in movies. He's awesome.
Wow dude, I never connected all these dots together. I have a new love for Jason, thanks.
Great video! I had the pleasure of meeting Jason Lee a few times over the years and I can say he's such a cool guy in person too.
love the tone of your voice and flow of information.
I don't if you've regularly pumped out these mini docos.
but I'll be looking out. keep em coming and I'll watch em allllllll. I'm not even into skating.
but respect an expert in their field.
it's my favourite thing on the planet.
I'm trying to move back into putting one of these out per month, it's all about finding interesting subjects with easily available info (easier said than done). But I appreciate it!
Jason Lee is a bad ass. I got to meet him in person in 2000 and it just turned into a ten minute conversation about real stuff and life. Hope he is still as grounded as he was then.
I'm starting the Looking Back playlist and I'm so hyped up, these r E X A C T L Y the niche late 90s/early 00s Zennial nostalgia pieces I need 2 make me feel okay in these hellish times
I’m keeping them coming as fast as I can 🤙
Not sure if it's just something all of us do when we hit the big 30's. I can't get enough of documentary's videos. I am always watching them. I feel like I am always learning something😁
I had Jason Lee's burger board. I've watched Mallrats over 100 times. Dude is a fricking acting genius. Legend.
Dude this makes me rekindle with my love for street skating cruising the streets and finding neat skate spots thru out the town or city 😢 great video 💯
Nice work, It never clicked that they were same guy.. I was a mad skater in the late 80's and early 90's.
Awesome video! it was suggested on my home page. my name is earl was such a good show
epic video bro....sooooo much fun and it brought back scoundrel memories of the 90's. Thank you and merry xmas.
I like the use of scoundrel in this comment, same to you dude 🤙
Great deep dive. Great video. Miss earl. Good to know his skateboarding CO. Is doing well!
Just bought my first Stereo deck from their online store last month, signed so I can’t ride it but I was still stoked 🤙
I used to watch his show, my name is earl. I remember showing it to my cousin and I told him you gotta check the show out it stars the dude Jason from the movie chasing amy.. hes hilarious. I'm a skater who grew up skating in the late 90s early 00s and I always knew Jason as an actor and my cousin was like you know hes originally a skateboarder? For some reason it was hard for me to believe that he was a skater lol. My cousin who grew up skating during Jason's era gave me his Blind, Video days tape and his Stero, A Visual Sound tape and I went back and discovered Jasons skating and he was awesome. I didn't realize he was from Ed Templeton and Mark Gonzales era.
Jason Lee Dropped Out of Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach, CA, where I Graduated, and so did Michelle Pfeiffer!
I love love love Jason and stereo skateboards! I've been supporting them since the very beginning. I have a pictures of me at the skatepark of Tampa in 1994 wearing a stereo shirt and hat. I loved the graphics and the retro vintage jazzy vibe. A visual sounds is such an amazing video still to this day. Jason was/is a rad skater. His 360 flips are legendary.
I’ve only been aware of the brand since their revival in 2005/2006, but I bought one of their anniversary decks signed by Jason Lee and Chris Pastras recently - first stereo deck I’ve owned so I was stoked!
@@MediaPastimes If only I would have thought to save all my skate clothes and boards from back in the 90s I would be sitting on a goldmine, not that I would sell them anyways. But back then were rode our boards until thy broke or were un-ridable. You should at least collect some vintage stereo skate stickers and buy a visual sound on VHS. 👍
I'll only known Jason Lee as Earl, but the fact that he VA syndrom blew my mind.
Alvin and the Chipmunks was a classic for my brothers and I growing up, and the song is very nostalgic to us of those old days.
same im older now but I watched it many times with my gf its a great movie, the original one
