We go over some history on the gap and show off some of the incredible skating that has gone down this thing as well as explore the school looking for other skate spots it's hiding. Most people probably don't realize that there is a 12 and 16 stair at the school that has also been skated!

does anyone out there have a connect to the inward heel slam dude? Jenkem wants to interview him but can’t track him down

@@norunners_ they have his name but cannot find him on social media or a way to him
Did he credit card or hit the wall at bottom?
Looks like a credit card😣😢🤢
He died shortly after RIP
“Time to go”
“Time to land it”
Legendary mom/son convo at the gap.
I laughed so hard when I heard it
And then you gotta think the conversation in their heads about the conversation,
Mom. "Okay, time to go." In her head, "Okay, it's official. I'm the worst Mom ever."
Kid. "Time to land it." In his head, "I'll end you. My whole life depends on this very moment."
also the No! and he replied "Yes"! amazing
Hands down the best line of the video
Let's shout out MOM, for being a real one for taking the kids to hit the spot back in the day.
Fr great mom
My mom woulda been like THATS ILLEGAL 😂
@@heyb6268 my mom never spent more than like 2 min watching me skate and i been skating for like 25 years
You guys who got a ride to the spot by mom's prolly the same kids talking about how hard you think you are after mom's minivan pulls away.
@@snavisTM someone is mad their mommy doesn't love them 😂😂
Its not your fault, it was probably the drugs and alcohol 😂😂😂
This was such a rad way to document the history of a spot. More of this dudes! I vote Arco next. Those rails were my dream spot in the late 90s
Good suggestion!
Lets make it happen
Cracked up when he fell and his mum being like "time to go!" And he's like "time to land it 😤"
😂😂
This is the content people are consumed. Really nailed it on the head keep this format up
Thank you! We have lots of spots we want to do more videos at!
AND it’s the Dern brothers!!! That says it all 🍻👌
very good format I'm not even a sub and quit skateboarding yet I find myself watching in nostalgia
Awesome video I subbed
Sick that Markovich literally skated the gap until the last second! True skater at heart.
HE opened the gap, HE closed it. 🎉🎉🎉
We need more skate gap history from you guys, cheers !
love to see a love park video
That switch hardflip from Brandon Turner is so epic. Especially with the run up he had.
First trick I think of with this gap.
Twuans Nollie heel and Brandon’s switch hard flip ❤❤❤❤
Great video. Awesome to look back on all that history. “Time to land it” was my favorite quote in the video.
Haha when I found that clip on our old hard drive, I was laughing so hard at that!
I'm old and haven't skated in decades, but it's content like this that keeps me coming back to the sport - if only as an observer. Excellent work on this!
Me too. Busted my leg in ‘97 and skateboarding went downhill from there for me. I love how there is so much access to content on UA-cam. Way back when you were limited to a VHS tape that you had to purchase. Or a copied version from a friend. Now all I have to do is type stuff into UA-cam. Still love to watch the progression. People are so fucking good at skateboarding now it’s retarded.
Same here
Such a unique video series for skateboarding, I'm not sure what spot to check out next, but I really hope you guys continue making videos like this!
We have some spots in mind that we are going to go to soon!
@@DernBrothers Wilshire, hubba hideout, or 3rd and army would be dope. You could make a 30 minute video at the least on just 3rd and army!
Embarcadero!!!!!
San Francisco it self could be 10 part video
@@DernBrothers Well, I subbed and turned on the notifications for your channel, yo
That was sick, you guys know your history! I like how ya'll implemented each of your own personal history on the spot too. Subbed for sure
Thanks for the sub! We are stoked you enjoyed the video!
these kids werent even alive when those clips were made
@@monkadelic13 lol no they definitely were bud. I know cuz I was around and they are the same age as me.
When I first heard you all say it was destroyed, I initially thought they destroyed it because they didn't want people using it any more. Then realized it was just for renovation. Pretty cool people got to use it for so long!
Yeah, we wish it was still here but it was just time to update the school I guess, at least there are still a few spots at the school!
Damm I got there right when they remodeled the school and I wish I got to experience those good times I bet the vibe around that time was amazing
Beginning clips all legends but hands down Brandon Turner’s hard flip is iconic 🔥
Even better, it was a switch hardflip. Yeah I'm surprised that dident make their list.
SWITCH HARDFLIP GNARLY
lmao this is amazing, the mom-cam ollie had me dying
Lol time to land it
haha one of our favorite parts! Our mom is rad for even taking us to the spot on our vacation back then!
It may be nothing much for people who live in the US but for me, an Italian skater who always watched videos and saw multiple clips in the same spots it’s really interesting to know the names, the history behind them, all the challenges people dealt with.
Keep making these !
America is gigantic and most skaters have never even been to California most likely. I grew up on the east coast a little south of Boston, Mass. From there to Los Angeles would be a 45 hour, 3000 mile long trip by car. Even just to get down to say, Washington D.C. is still an 8 hour drive through crazy traffic, so likely longer than 8 hrs. Most of us USA skaters still view these iconic spots the same way that you guys overseas do!
I love it! Please more videos of little Kanaan skating 😆
"Time to land it" lmao, This was really well done, def keep doing this at famous spots, i love the connection to your childhood too
The gnarliest one for me was Layton’s switch tre. Love this kind of videos! You should make of more famous spots.
Antwan Dixons Nollie heel on the bad gap was so smooth 👌🏾
8:54 "That's how it goes when your mom's on the set"
What a cool mom. Don't know if it was a pain at times or not, but it's better to have her there than not. I can imagine the anxiety she was going through.
💁♀️ I survived! Thanks for the kind comment! 😎
Ocean Howell attended Carlsbad High. I ollied the gap back in 1992/93, by then I was already ollying 12 stair sets and over fire hydrants. I was first and foremost best at Freestyle, then Street while competing with guys like Daewon Song, Danny Castillo, Chet Thomas from the late 1980s through the early 1990s.
Yes sir great times...
Hell yeah dude, been seeing so many skate history vids lately and I love it.
I'm 29, been skating for like 16-17 years now, glad theres dudes like you on YT keeping the history alive for all the kids coming up now.
Love seeing channels before they blow up. Good work guys. That was a fun one. Subbed
This channel is extremely under rated. 54.4 k subscribers as of 12-19-2023? That is insane! I'm sure you guys will blow up, just keep making great content. You should have hundreds of thousands with the quality you are putting out. Your knowledge of the spots, commentary, and great skating of the spots themselves is always entertaining.
The finger flip. Such an underrated trick. Plus Coyne and I are from the same place.
such a sick vid, loove the archive footage jonathan pierce was so sick back in the pyramid days
Thank you! Yes Jonathan Pierce is rad!
Jeremy Wray is a BOSS. That water tower gap was insane. He doesn't get enough credit. But by far Brandon Turners sketchy roll up to hardflip was the sickest shit to go down. Major steez.
Plus, Brandon's regular so it's switch. Crazier yet!
Great video. I would always go through the tricks in my head on what I would try down that gap. Its really awesome you had the opportunity to see a famous spot in videos and give it your best shot. So funny hearing your mom supporting you but also fearing for your life. Exactly how any parent sane parent would act seeing their child chase their skateboarding dreams.
thanks for the detailed info on the spot, awesome stuff
Sweet video guys. Well done. Always been one of my favorite gaps to see clips of. Love the history
Greatest youtube video of the year so far..with all the clips included. This is dope!!! good coffee watch video
i don’t even watch skateboard videos but the format you did this video in was so cool with all the flashbacks
Awesome video guys! Loved learning the history of this famous gap. Sad that it's gone but lives on in memory! Cheers boys.
Brandon Turner switch hardflip is nuts.
Yes it is!
So buttery!!
Man I remember back in 7th grade sitting in my room listening to my portable discman and doing whatever cool tricks I could think of down the Carlsbad gap in THPS2. I started skating at the perfect time, like 6 months before the first one came out, so those games were my favorite thing in the world at the time lol.
Just found the channel and love the vibes you guys have, you guys are going to crush YT and be one of the big dawgs soon keep it up. Its great to see homies having fun and skating just living life, cheers
First time seeing one of your vids. Absolutely love this format. Seeing all the different tricks done at the same spot and learning some skate history, mixed in with some clips from you guys is dope!
Sweet video guys!! Awesome seeing footage of Kanaan from back in the day haha!
Thanks Chris! I still need to upload our old skate preview video! I still have the dvd you gave me!
@@DernBrothers Awesome! Sounds good man!
First time seeing you guys. Really enjoyed watching this. When he ollied "the new carlsbad gap" and had the small image of his younger self pushing along-side him was really awesome. Sort of an emotional moment as I'm the same age and as we all are getting older and still pushing ourselves to do what we really fell in love with when we were young. Subscribed.
Eric big spin in baker 3 was legendary! I couldn’t remember what trick he did I just remember his little victory dance at the end. Legend.
Seeing that slam at Carlsbad with the credit card initially made me think "wow, these people are idiots, nothing is worth this!". Then I remember all the fun times I had nearly dying at the skatepark trying to grind copings. I also think to when I nearly destroyed my guitar playing hand from a 5-0 grind on a very tall coping that went wrong. I fell into the bowl and bent my guitar playing hands fingers so far back I felt my sciatic nerve grind against my wrist horribly. This gave me a permeant but mild form of carpel tunnel that permanently affected my ability to play my chosen style of music, heavy metal. I could no longer grip the neck precisely enough, and to this day still can't to play that quickly any longer. I can still play fast, don't get me wrong. However, I am nowhere near what I was before my injury and unfortunately I didn't have a UA-cam channel nor the self esteem to film myself back then. That being said, I now have a flourishing UA-cam channel playing guitar and demoing guitar pedals. I can't play as fast but I changed my style, as a result I make far more money with my guitar solos because they have a wider appeal. This was a welcome side effect but I do with I could both skate, and play guitar at the level I used to. My injury made that impossible and I had nightmares for decades and to this day. I'm a guitar teacher so that slam was enough to make me quit skating for what I thought was for good. I don't think anyone is an idiot for doing what they love but what I found stupid was me not wearing a helmet or a cup! There must be a credit card proof cup right? Anyways, I'm 35 now and this channel has inspired me to get back to the park, albeit with knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a cup and a helmet. I don't care if I look like a jackass. At least I'll be safe. If that's what it takes for me to not destroy my ability to play, I'm happy. Now I'm staying within my limits and still doing a lot of my old vert tricks. Stay safe out there everyone. A helmet is a MUST.
Love this type of video showing old spots and skate history on them! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Definitely want to see more videos like this. You two are the perfect people to show off the history of the spot
Ich te mich schon auf die nächsten
5:25 that edit lol 🤣
For real though, love these "history of skateboarding" and, or "showcasing a classic spot" types of videos. Just saw one on the Leap of Faith. Good stuff. Seeing these classic bits of old skate videos is hella nostalgic too.
You guys are all rad but what makes me happy is that you love each other so much. My brother is my best friend in the world. Keep up the love!!!
We are strongest when working together! 💪
@Dern Brothers Hell yes we are!! Stay up gents! Thanks for the response!
💁♀️ Awweeee, I like this comment the best,
Love Mama Dern 🙏🏻
Jeremh Wray talks about being the first person to discover the gap in the early 90s so he's most likely the first to ollie it
I bet you are right!
This is awesome y’all, great video!
Thanks for watching!
So nostalgic! Now do San Dieguito. Such a better school to skate overall. Classic videos show how premier this spot was and how important it is to history.
Yup Laban pheidas school bus gap
@@JOSHRICHBJJ1 ok cool bro
Great video. I’m glad I was able to see it in person if only once. Such a classic spot in skateboard history!!!!!
I can’t wait to see what spot you check out next.
Thanks for keeping in Erik ellingtons “creeper walk” after the big spin im definitely subbing to this channel
Crazy how much history at one spot, whole video was such a nostalgic feeling lol
Love the history! I remember some of these gritty vids on 📼.
Thank you for the flashback. Great times trying to recreate in our own towns. Wow
Can’t wait to see more. You guys did a great job paying your respects to the gap!
Really cool vid! Its nice to hear about the history. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Cool video man, I enjoyed it very much. Very nostalgic for me. Do more of these.
Just came across y'alls channel and I LOVE IT. Keep doin what ya doin. You guys shred 🤘
Really appreciate the time you put into the history of the gap including the clips as well! Such a legendary spot growing up.
I really like how this was in the style of a documentary. Like the flashbacks to old clips (which I know is a lot of work to edit and I appreciate it!) brings a lot of good memories. Keep up the hard work!
Thank you! Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoy the video, it’s a lot of work but worth it!
Holy shit...dude I haven't seen that part where Jeremy Wray FS flips this in, idk how long. That whole video was so good. But his FS flip along with the music was perfect. That 3 second spot all on its own used get me so pumped to go skate. Even now...after all these yrs...still made the hair on my neck stand up. Best time of my life
He did that in a huge line in 1994 30 years ago😊
Y'all took me back to my skating days , I loved the baker videos and all the old-school skate films .
This video was incredible I'm blown away at all the clips new and old!! We need more of these
"Time to go!" more like, "Time to land it!"
😂😂😂
so crazy to see my high school in this and how iconic it was for skaters truly mind blowing
Thank you for documenting skate history and also adding some new age fun
What an awesome video!!! Paying homage!!! This brought me back!!! 🤘🤘
That was brilliant, really enjoyed the skating + history.
How about a tour around famous SF spots?
That was such a sick documentary. Subbed, please make more content like this. Was great seeing the spot conquest evolution.
Sick video. Glad this was recommended to me. I would love to see more spots! Subbed!
So much work went into this video and it shows. Totally epic finally getting some of the recognition that you guys deserve! 🤙
That’s so kind of you to say! You know how editing hours add up! So happy for y’all! Hugs 🤗 to all three of you from Mama Dern! 🙏🏻

Thank you! We are going to make more videos like this on other spots in the future
This is the content I need in my life this is awesome and then the personal clip with your mom haha dope I definitely felt that
Quality channel. Subscribed and wishing you guys much success! Looking forward to your new videos
This is very professional content and absolutely enjoyable. True skaters will love this.
I loved this! Really great video!
Thank you!
I appreciate the knowledge and all the information from the og clips and skaters you dropped in this video
instant subscribed! what a great video and so many great clips and inserts. the place is truly legendary and this video maintains the culture further
Nice vid, I like the spot history and walking around the space to get context. Maybe a Santa Monica Triple Set video would be good. I went there and could not imagine even jumping down them, so damn long, and the runway blows.
Santa Monica triple is a very good suggestion! That thing is huge!
This was my highschool, I knew history had been made there but never really knew how much.
I am glad you now know the history on such a legendary high school for skateboarders! Thanks for watching
Awesome stuff guys, I love the clips from when you were younger shredding it up. Good job on this series
This UA-cam channel is criminally underrated
Hopefully we get more views and subs soon!
@@DernBrothers 7k views in 15 hours for skate content is pretty decent in my opinion. Just keep grinding and everything else will follow

Da throwback with your mom tellin u to chill was everything 😁... My mom always did da same lol.. especially cuz im black and its not common to "jump down stairs" as said in da hood lol... Shows how much she cares, how determined u were (are), and how much time has passed
He made that 2 block with the out ledge look so much fun. Clean!
Really enjoyed this video, aswell as it being very informative it gave me a new found respect for the sk8rs who full sent this gnarly gap.
I love to see + hear the history of skateboarding. To hear multiple versions of the same spot and now to Actually watch it go down was pretty cool guys.
This series is so cool. This kinda content would have blown my mind if it was available when I was obsessed with everything skateboarding growing up. Late90’s early 2000’s. When one of my friends would get a new skate video and we’d rewatch it dozens of times, or looking at a new Thrasher, even getting a new monthly free CCS catalog in the mail was something to look forward to. This is such a rad idea for a UA-cam channel, you guys are killing it
Yooo this is so cool. Love the format and editing down to the classical music. Easy to watch. Keep it goin!
I didn't know ya'll had a channel. Easy sub! CAn't wait to see more of this series
Great video. Good story telling wrapped with facts, and we’ll timed edits. Really enjoyed this. Thank you!
