Amazing footage, dedicated to the firefighters who put their lives on the line at each call.. always brings a lump to my throat seeing the engines. My Dad was a fireman, we lost him in 1971 when I was 10 .. brave men...

When something like this happens we want and expect emergency services to get there quick, however rural the incident is. The firefighters provide an amazing service - and in the Highlands most of them are 'Retained' (i.e. not employed full-time by the service, but on-call) or even unpaid volunteers. They'll probably have come from across a wide area to this call - but they are not allowed to use blue lights on their own vehicles or to break speed limits to get to the base. The respect you have shown to them in these vlogs is so deserved. They do exhausting work in tough conditions. I live in the Highlands too, and some years ago my house was badly damaged by fire after lightning. I'm still so grateful to the firefighters - some of them people I knew personally.

Great job filming this. As a firefighter, I know how much hard work it is to fight a wildfire. Kudos to your Fire Brigade on a job well done containing this early, and protecting you and your neighbors homes.

This film is just so beautiful--a combination of music, natural sounds, and the images... I saw some of your drone footage of the fire a couple of days ago and I was taken by the images. Your eye for pictures is really, really good. What is important is you clearly state you get permission to fly your drone, because there are people that clearly don't give a darn. Was your sweet dog bothered by the scent of smoke?

Stupendus video, this needs to be shown in schools throughout the country to educate the idiots who start moorland fires deliberately or accidentaly. Your skills at putting together all your videos, but especially this one, are stunning and professional. It's an honour to follow both of you.

Whilst the subject was terrifying, the area looks stunning. How about an occasional series about the recovery of the land and how quickly it can recover? Have seen similar in Spain and was amazed at how quickly things grew back.

    • @jiversteve

Managed burning has been a thing for centuries, i day again, managed!
In Australia the Aborigines used to manage vegetation by controlled burning of undergrowth and to promote new growth.
The more modern settlers frowned on the practice but without some form of land management, at a sometimes prohibitive cost, wildfires encroach on properties.
The previous poster mentioned spain, where I live, and it’s a constant economic battle between clearing fire breaks and managing the land to be economically productive.
Many outsiders view the fires as catastrophic, but they have been part of land management for centuries, it’s just that now, human beings have inserted themselves into the landscape without a care for traditional land management techniques.
Newcomers to an area are reluctant to pay the cost of land clearance to manage the fire risk, as a result, the burns when they do occur, are dramatic.
It falls upon the fire service to manage the fires, and often this is restricted by free access to water and the existence of power lines that aerial firefighters have to avoid.
Somewhere there is a happy medium, but that can only be found locally, one site is very different from another.

I think this is the best video you have produced to date....it's a masterpiece. Nicely done, Colin.
I must have gotten a little smoke in my eye when I got to the part about dedicating it to the firefighters. I've been a firefighter my whole life and have lost a few good friends in the line of duty over the years.....but for a simple "thank you" , I'd do it all over again.

Living in California, USA, I'm very familiar with the stress and fear of seeing wildfire come close to your home. My sister and I have had to evacuate twice in the last 12 years. With God's grace we did not lose anyone in the fires. There was one year in the early 2000 when it seemed like the entire state was on fire. This is an annual event here in California, the only difference is the severity of the fires. I'm glad that you're both okay. Hopefully your neighbors didn't suffer too much damage.

As always, some great video. However it must be said that this is kind of normal in our glorious highlands where the dried gorse, bracken etc is regularly burnt off to regenerate the heather, gorse etc. Of course, when houses are threatened, then it's paramount that they are protected by the ire Service. Being an ex-firefighter myself these types of fires are exhausting to deal with with limited manpower. Keep up the good work and stay safe. Looking forward to your builds of your small-holding.

Very scary for all concerned, the scrub and gorse probably needed a good clean up, at least it will not burn again for some time. Hats off to the fire control people, having spent 28 years in the emergency services in Australia I really think the word hero for emergency workers is not apt, we all do a job we want to do both paid and volunteer workers alike, I guess emergency workers a doing a job many people would not like to do hence the word "hero" has emerged. You can be assured that we do not feel like hero's

Thanks for answering something I kept wondering-why they weren't using air drops. Didn't know there were power lines in the way. Fires, like many natural disasters, rarely do what you expect, and can be capricious in their destruction. Some things are burned to the ground, but an area nearby could be perfectly safe. I'm glad you are all safe, the house is intact, and you'll be able to continue onward

Seeing the firemen putting the fire out with the equipment they had was amazing...I take my hat off to them, what a huge effort. I presume the same happens there, where a lot of these fires are actually extinguished by the "vollies" as we call them, not career firefighters and if this is the case there, then the job they do is even more remarkable...imo. We have had vollies here lose their homes whilst out saving other peoples homes/properties. Taking nothing away from the career firefighters, but to risk your own safety for the love of your community and nothing else is on another level.
Hopefully the black will be replaced after a few rains with green and the wildlife will return once the area can support them again.

Another downside of brush fires can be subsequent flooding / mud since plants will slow water flow. Grew up in Southern California and there were almost always mud slides after fire seasons. Be careful.
    Glad everyone is safe.
