CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Baltus (Michael Gambon) tells the tale of how the Hessian Horseman (Christopher Walken) was killed with his own sword.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Washington Irving's tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman gets a few new twists in a screen adaptation directed by Tim Burton. In this version, Ichabod (Johnny Depp) is a New York City detective whose unorthodox techniques and penchant for gadgets make him unpopular with is colleagues. He is sent to the remote town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of bizarre murders, in which a number of people have been found dead in the woods, with their heads cut off. Local legend has it that a Hessian ghost rides through the woods on horseback, lopping off the heads of the unsuspecting and unbelieving. Ichabod refuses to believe in this legend, convinced that there must be a logical explanation for the murders. In time, Ichabod becomes smitten with a local lass, Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci), who is the sweetheart of the burly Brom Bones (Casper Van Dien), and he becomes determined to capture the murderer to prove his bravery and win her heart. Christopher Walken, Jeffrey Jones, and Christopher Lee highlight the supporting cast; Lee's appearance is particularly apt, since Burton has cited the Hammer films of the 1960s as a major influence in making this film. Andrew Kevin Walker and Tom Stoppard contributed to the screenplay.

I love how tenderly he looks at his dying steed, you can almost see tears as he pets it goodbye before fleeing. You know he would have stayed to the end if he could...
He only fled because of the second shot fired at him. I liked him very much as a character. He had more depth than a lot of people realized. The innocents he kills are when he is being controlled by the witch. When he gets his free will back, he defeats the witch. I don't think he's an inherently evil character. The only people he kills of his own free will are enemy soldiers and the witch that was controlling him and forcing him to kill innocent people.

Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow" is hands down one of my favorite movie! Especially the Headless Horseman!
IKR? I LOVE him!
Best version from the looks of it.
My favorite alongside the Disney one.
TBH This adaptation of Sleepy Hollow is better than the Disney one.
@@harrisonlee5055 The Disney film is accurate to the book while the Tim Burton film went with its own story. I find the Disney film more entertaining but I think Ichabod and Katrina are much more likable in the Tim Burton film than the Disney film. This was a complex and badass Horseman. In life he was an utter blood knight who lived for the thrill of battle, but he had a code of honor and saw no need for killing innocents. He also dearly loved his horse as a lifelong companion. And in his final stand, he managed to kill most of the hunting party that had been pursuing him all by himself. You would only find a deadlier revenant in Jason Voorhees himself.
Thrill of battle - there's no thrill in killing those too weak or incapable of combat.

Little late here but you can see them fighting against redcoats
Going back and rewatching this film, I’ve picked up on a few things. Despite his love of carnage and chaos, the Horseman had a code of honor. He could’ve easily murdered the kids instead of calmly going “shhhh”, but he didn’t. Even after the little girl broke the stick he didn’t attack them. Which means that later in the film, Lady Van Tassel makes him break that code by murdering the unarmed Killian family and the other lady that was pregnant.
I agree he might be a psycho but he's still a soilder.
No, he couldn't, not without further endangering himself.
If he'd attacked the girls, at least one of them would've screamed and alerted the soldiers chasing him. And later as the Headless Horseman, he murders a child (off screen). He had no code of honor, he was just a bloodthirsty psycho.
I really HATE Lady Van Tassel! I mean, I'm sorry she had such a rough time as a kid. But killing people in cold blood is NOT the answer.
@@jculver1674 He was controlled to kill certain people, it wasnt in his power
Tim Burton has an excellent eye for detail. That decapitated head looks so real, just like the ones you see in crime scene photos, with their emotionless and dull expressions.

I so totally loved this movie, one of my favorites of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp!
Walken as the Horseman is like something out of an Evil Dead movie. Funny but so goddamn cool/badass at the same time.
Now try and picture Willem Dafoe as the Horseman. Equally terrifying, or more hilarious in some aspect?
Thanks for posting. I'm a descendant of the real Van Tassel (originally Van Texel) family. According to legend, the Van Tassels did find a head and body of a decapitated Hessian soldier and buried it in the old cemetery at Sleepy Hollow (originally North Tarrytown), NY. Washington Irving became friends with the Van Tassels and wrote the short story with their name in it. There really was a Catrina Van Tassel, but she lived before the Rev. War and was the sister of my ancestor, Sarah Van Tassel.

I find Christopher Walken to be better as king Louie in The Jungle Book, because he doesn't scream there all the time, but that doesn't mean this role of his isn't cool.

Everybody talks about how heart wrenching it is when a dog dies in a movie, and that’s very true…
But I still won’t go to see most horse racing movies because I don’t wanna chance them having to put the horse down
I always interpreted the reason that the Hessian only growled and yelled in "Sleepy Hollow" was for three reasons. 1) He filed his teeth down to sharp points and therefore, any vowel that consisted of using his teeth against his tongue or lips would cause excruciating pain. 2) He spoke High German (being from Hessen) and most of the Sleepy Hollow residents were Dutch and therefore would not know his language even if some parts were recognizable. 3) It makes him all the more less human and therefore so much more sinister. 4) Could you imagine Walken trying to do a German accent?
Agree. I always assumed he never spoke because he spoke German and not English I also figured his sharp teeth might of prevented him from being able to speak.

Christopher Walken? Best casting choice ever!
The least likely part of this is that the killers left the Horseman his sword.
A blade that magnificently designed would be a trophy for any soldier back in the day.
The troops were probably afraid it was cursed. I'd imagine one of them was worried the Horseman would come back to haunt them should they take it.
Ray Park was the Headless Horseman stunt double for the sword fighting sequences.

*Girl breaks twig and alerts enemies.*
Me: "Okay there goes plan A, up to plan H and yes the H stands for hostage." *proceeds to grab the girl who broke the twig.*

So, what EXACTLY did the Horseman do wrong? He fought the same as all the other Hessians, but did it out of passion. He made a point of cutting enemies heads off, which is the quickest and most painless way to die. He obviously cared deeply for his horse, Daredevil, and was hurt when Daredevil was mortally wounded. He didn't attack the little girls who gave him away. After his death, the Horseman only killed people while under control of the witch. Christian Schmude Also at the end when he gets his head back he doesn't kill Ichabod and Katrina instead looking at them perhaps in his own way of thanking them.
Christian Schmude Sometime in the stories the villains aren't really villains, and the heroes aren't really heroic.
In the end, stories are made to boost someone's fame in order to be famous or infamous.
I think he only liked killing in the context of war and battle.
He couldn't kill them before he was discovered without making noise, and after he had no time due to the approach of his enemies.
@@marinaaguas9219 I agree. I think he was only psychotic and bloodthirsty in the heat of battle and his only victims were soldiers or those that tried to kill him.
