Man those mid 2000s 49ers offenses were painful to watch. I'm glad Alex Smith found his groove later in his career with better coaches and talent around him. At this point, outside of Gore, he had no weapons around him.
Rackers went 6/6 in this game, what a great performance. This was the best season of his career, he went 40/42 on the year and made the Pro Bowl. The Cardinals were dominant in every aspect but their special teams unit clearly made a big difference.
I think this year by Rackers could be argued as the best kicking season ever. Perfect seasons by Anderson and Vanderjagt prior to this point were aided by playing in domes.
There was something about them that seemed warm and inviting, like you wanted them in your living room. I don't know why, but you just don't get many crews like this anymore. The thing about this crew is they just had great chemistry. I don't think Mike Patrick was a great play-by-play guy and Paul Maguire just seemed like your goofy uncle, but I think everything tied together so well. Joe and Mike worked together before Paul came and they always had phenomenal chemistry, and adding Paul made it all the better.
@@EsotericHighway I think Eagle is good but he is not my favorite; I think I have too many bad memories as a kid when he called games for the Bengals where things did not go our way. But he definitely is objectively a very good announcer and always calls a good game. I'm not so sure about him being underrated, though... Fans definitely recognize and appreciate him, he has a great spot as CBS' number two guy, and his name has been thrown around for even bigger opportunities before (MNF, Amazon TNF, and CBS resigned him a couple years ago before they resigned Jim Nantz, which was certainly a leverage move, but they indicated they would have been alright going with Eagle had Nantz actually jumped ship).
ESPN’s Sunday Night Football wasn’t necessarily to the production quality of ABC’s Monday Night Football (the latter of which is now NBC SNF), but ESPN SNF was a cool broadcast aimed at hardcore NFL fans and marketed towards the Male 25-50 demographic. Since Goodell, a marketing wizard as opposed to previous commissioners who were lawyers, took over the following year, the NFL basically started taking that demographic for granted and for the last 15 years has been targeting women, children, and international viewers. That makes this game kind of a crossover between the old NFL and the new NFL.
I remember going to this game as a 13 year old youngblood and the crowd went crazy when Ed Hochuli called the first penalty of the game in Spanish (kind of), even ref Hochuli laughed a little bit when this happened.
Even when they have a bad W/L record, the 49ers vs Cardinals have resulted in MANY great games. Since the merger, they have had over 20 games decided by one score (8 points) or fewer. Four Over Time games. Multiple decided by 3 points or less. Sure, there have been some blow outs, but they typically trade blow for blow. While SF leads the all-time series 32-29, 12 of those are from before the divisional realignment in 2002 with 9 losses. Since the realignment, it is tied 20-20.
Hell even in 2004, after the 49ers 25 year run of relevance finally came to an end and they had been forced to blow up the team the previous offseason, the 49ers got their only 2 wins of the season against the Cardinals, both in OT. I actually edited a video for another channel on how bad that 49ers offense was, they faced the notorious Bucs defense and looked like a high school team. Think the video is called “Most pathetic good-weather game on offense?” 😂
@@TheLocalLt yeah I remember that season lol 😂 the 49ers only wins came against their division rivals the cardinals. Both of those games went to Over time crazy how both of those games ended with the same score 31-28 lol 😂
The sad fact is that this game would have been 52-0 if not for three fumbles by Arizona. Imagine having no shot at winning a game when you are facing the early 2000s Cardinals.
I think with the logistics of the teams, this was a pretty good place for a game. Just like I think the northern teams could play a regular season Canadian game. Travels egual, no huge amount of stay required. But I don't think an international playoff game is doable. But sure would be putting your 'consistent' loyal NFL fans in a tight place for costs of travel, lodging. Then there's the logistics of losing home field advantage that you've won by a better record. How would you compensate the 'better' team?
would love to see both bears-falcons games of 08 and 09, which also happened to be in the same week of their respective weeks. 08 had a game-winning fg by elam and 09 had a flag finish. both were good games. Would also love to see Broncos-Falcons 2012, shutting down Peyton.

40 field goals in a season also set a new record, which stood until 2011 when Davis Akers shattered it with 44.
I think this year by Rackers could be argued as the best kicking season ever. Perfect seasons by Anderson and Vanderjagt prior to this point were aided by playing in domes.

I’d love to see their Week 5 matchup from 2004 on this channel sometime! That game had Fitz’s first NFL TD, plus a late comeback/win by SF
