      Shawdow, you have no idea how much that means to me. I put a ton of effort into each of these videos and I am glad you can tell! There will be a limited run of controllers done at some point. The restoration treatment inside the retro bright box works wonders! didnt expect results that good, definitely something to do on clear shells. I have a question on it tho, u mentioned something about natural sunlight... is it possible to ditch building the box and use natural sunlight?

    • @RockerGaming
      @RockerGaming  5 років тому +1

      Chile, yes it is, but I dont recommend it. When you have the controller outside its extremely difficult to control the intensity of the UV and the heat (created by the greenhouse effect) so what happens is the plastics will get over exposed and you could end up with areas that over treated and you get a streaking effect. The retrobright box is where it's at as the variables are extremely consistent and therefore easier to get a good result. The trade off is it takes longer for the process to complete.

    Have you ever dunked the Membrane pads in boiling water for like 3 seconds to rejuvenate the elasticity?
    When are we going to go the extra mile and add some EL wire into the cable braid? I think it may shine thru.
    I love the Plug cover! YAY some RG Branding on the custom PCB!
    I love the use of the NES game for transition sequences.
    I built my retrobright box this weekend. I used some Foil wrapping paper and silver gift wrap plastic to get something really reflective and durable.

      @@RockerGaming I have boiled a few membranes, just be careful to not melt them. Hold them with long tweezers and do not let them go. Three to five seconds is usually long enough.
      Here is a link to EL wire. www.amazon.com/Blue-Neon-Glowing-Strobing-Electroluminescent/dp/B003J99JW4
      Do you use a paracord inner strand to help pull the cable thru?

    • @RockerGaming
      @RockerGaming  5 років тому

      I will give that a try. I have a few extra membrane pads to give that a shot with!
      Unfortunately the inner strand doesnt help as the paracord isnt rigid enough. That EL wire looks pretty cool. The only thing that makes me nervous about it is that it works off 4.5V, which would require a step down converter and I am not sure if I can just cut it to size (I have not looked into it, not sure if you know). Either way, for $12 it would be a cool experiment!
      Very nice, that box looks like itll do the trick very nicely! Let me know how it works for you!

    As for the shielding on the cable. I would recommend leaving it on. Nintendo put it there for a reason. It does potentially help with interference. Granted in the US with FCC compliance you don't encounter a lot of things that could interfere too heavily. Unless you have all your wires in a birds nest type setup where wires and power cables are crossing over each other, it Should be fine without the shield. But I still recommend leaving it on if possible. What I have been doing is putting a few random drops of super glue on the stripped cable and shield to keep the shielding in place and basically gluing everything together at the end of the cable to keep it wound together. Whenever I talk to my dad next I'll ask him about the shielding and interference. I could be wrong here but I think I've got it correct. My Dad is an electrical engineer who works with/for the FCC and a large radio/media company so he is the man to ask.
    As for the eBay buttons and sticks. I found foil works the best and it's easy to add or remove. The problem with the sticks is the center shaft hole is too deep so the stick sits too low and the head of the control stick will rub (just explaining in more detail than the video shows) but you can encounter the opposite in there the base will rub if the stick isn't pushed down low enough.
    The other problem with the eBay buttons is that the L/R triggers are not as smooth as the stock ones so they feel gritty when using them. Then you have the shape of the X/Y buttons. They are more flat on top than the stock ones which isn't a big deal but I notice it but it's not a problem. Then the last problem is that some of the sets are messed up and you have to clean/drill out the stick shaft hole. But hey for ~$2 what can you expect.
    I know OP knows the majority of all this hell I learned how to do these mods because of him but thought I'd give some extra info that might be helpful to someone.

      Update: Talked to my dad. Basically if you are doing a shorter cable still try and leave the shield on its worth dealing with. If you are doing a longer cable you REALLY want to leave it on. The birds nest thing will/can cause problems also there is a chance a cellphone or even wifi could cause interference and cause the system to miss inputs and thats not good obviously.
      Side note don't ask a guy who deals with radio interference all day to explain radio interference to you unless you want to get trapped in a conversation for longer than expected.
