  • This is a full painting tutorial of how to paint a bust in oil paints. I combined the single videos of my bust painting series to this complete step by step guide of painting a miniature bust in oils over an acrylic pre colouring.
    I started with preparing and assembling the bust, and after priming it made a pre shading and pre colouring with my airbrush using acrylic paints. Then details like the airborne patch and the eyes were painted in acrylics.
    Next the figure painting in oils part started. I show how to prepare the oil paints for painting, and how to paint a miniatures face using oil paints. Painting the torso started with the green airborne uniform, equipment parts in khaki and the helmet and M9 Bazooka are also part of this figur painting in oils guide.
    Last part is how to create a winter bust base with basic scale modeling techniques. I here used AK Interactive snow products like Still Water, Snow Sprinkles and Snow Microballoons. The surface was created like an arored texture using Tamiya Basic Putty and plastic glue. The painting is supposed to look like a winter white wash camouflage you can find on tanks in a winter scene. I created it by using chipping medium and built it up in several layers of Tamiya paints.
    This 101st Airborne Ranger in Bastogne resin bust is from Young Miniatures (YM1855) and in 1/10 scale.
    As a big Band of Brothers fan I also painted the insignia of the 2nd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
    You can find the single videos on my channel for more detail, especially the assembly and pre shading and pre colouring.
    I hope this painting a bust tutorial is helpfull for one or two of you and I can show some miniature painting techniques for beginners and veterans.
    Please let me know how you like my work, I am looking forward to your feedback an constructive criticism. And if you like what you saw, I would be happy if you consider subscribing.
    Thank you and stay safe.

    In this genuinely inspiring series you combined real artistry with such careful attention to detail, all of your layers of refinement of the skin were absolutely worthwhile to produce such a beautiful rendering and such realism to the eye. In the process you really demonstrated the value and possibilities of oil paints.
    The finished work is remarkable to enjoy looking at, but watching how you painted it was an absolute inspiring joy and I thank you for that friend.
    (In addition to your painting talent the videos were very well made too, and that's a quality work all of it's own)

      Thank you very much for your kind words, really happy to hear🙏 yes, details make models or busts unique, and I like to take my time and go for quality over quantity. Really happy to hear that I was successful and you liked the video as well. Filming an editing is really a lot work, but it's also fun, and I am happy that it's appreciated 😊

    Hello and thank you for this great video. The most difficult to understand for the beginner that I am, is the drying periods between each step, how long do you let it dry? 24h00? more? and before the glaze on the helmet, how long did you let it dry?
    The result is superb, your painting is really pleasing to the eye, it's a beautiful tribute to these heroes. Many thanks for this work.
    Sincerely
    Didier

    • @biberhunter_scale_models
      @biberhunter_scale_models  Рік тому

      Thank you for your kind words🙏 the drying times depend on how thick the paint is. A thin glaze needs maybe a few hours, a thicker layer for painting details more like 24. When you use a slow cooker like the one I used in the video, you can cut that to 20 Minutes and continue working👌 if you switch between dark and light paints I would wait a bit more to make sure the first layer is completely dry.

    very nice and good knowledge of color, but what if the painter doesn't want to use oils? Oils aren't kinda toxic. How would the painter do this same style with acrylics like Vallejo?

    • @biberhunter_scale_models
      @biberhunter_scale_models  19 днів тому

      Oil paints are toxic? Really never heard of that🤔 well, this of course is a tutorial for painting with oils, so for acrylic painting there are other tutorials needed. But actually my next project will be a bust painted with acrylic paints, so maybe this will be interesting for you🤞

    Beautiful! Following your tutorial, can you explain your drying process. How long did you wait for it dry? How did you speed up drying time?

    • @biberhunter_scale_models
      @biberhunter_scale_models  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you🙏 I am pretty sure that I mentioned that in the video, using a slow cooker for 20 minutes to speed up the drying time🤔 it should be the part with the helmet. Without slow cooker it can be hours, depending on how thick the paint is or if you switch between light and dark paints.

    When you say in your commentary, "When that was dry", How long are you talking about?

    • @biberhunter_scale_models
      @biberhunter_scale_models  Рік тому +1

      Well that depends on how much you dilute the paint. If you make a glaze with more thinner than paint, it's relatively quick, maybe a few hours. If you paint thicker layers or want to switch between light and dark paints, you should wait until the next day. Therefore the slow cooker or crock pot I mentioned in the video is very helpful. 20 minutes on low and after a few minutes for cooling down you can continue painting👌

      @@biberhunter_scale_models Thanks. Since taking up this hobby again a few years ago I have been using acrylics. I would like to try oils but I will need to teach myself the patience to take the extra time needed.
