PAINTING FIGURES' FACES - STEP BY STEP - BEARDS

- Continuing the series of updates to one of our more popular videos on face painting for scale models and figures or busts, this film is once again with a 1/10th scale Young Miniatures resin bust of a Knight Templar in Jerusalem, who happens to look a bit like Sean Connery (YH1827). As it's Movember (Google it), it felt fitting to deal with the prickly issue of facial hair and beards.
Our other video for 1/35th scale figures' faces is here:
• PAINTING FIGURES' FACE...
Whilst our other video on 1/10th scale faces is available here:
• PAINTING FIGURES' FACE...
This is a simple non-elitist step-by-step video guide to painting figures' faces with beards/facial hair using Vallejo's excellent Model Color range. This is aimed at everyday figure painting and our background is armour modelling. We have only really got into figure painting with busts relatively recently. This is a summary of the techniques we have picked up along the way. So this tutorial from www.scalewarmac... is aimed at beginner modellers & AFV model makers looking to paint realistic faces for their figures. It is not a masterclass, rather a simple technique for effective results. It should be accessible and simple to follow even for beginners. If you want to watch a long-winded masterclass, check out one of the expert figure painter channels on You Tube instead.
We hope you enjoy this and that it inspires you to try your hand at a larger scale bust or figure.
If you want to see how we painted the torso, uniform (tabard and shield), let us know in the comments.

I have just bought this bust and it will be my first time working on anything larger than 28mm. Having watched the video, I'm a little bit more confident about starting it.

Very nice. I'd like to see more of this.
Great job.....the face and beard...usual high level of details in both the visuals and the commentary....thank you! A video detailing the painting of the torso, shield etc would be great as well. Your series are a terrific watch so keep them coming.

Looks good but I must say I've been painting for a long time and never yet have I used white for an eye. Cause your eye is not really white. Can't wait to see more...thanks for sharing...

Great video , as always, many thanks for the tutorial, it is very helpful!
I have this bust and it is a really beautiful piece.
I would like to see the rest of it completed as I am interested in how you tackle the cross on his shield and the chain mail.
😉👍
Great video and I would love to see the rest of him painted in a video.
Magnificent ART.
I was looking for some information on how to paint a) older faces, and b) bearded faces, and this was really what I needed! Thanks for posting it!
Glad I could help!
It would be great to see the tehniche for the rest of the bust please.
I have this figure and have been putting it off a little. After watching this I'm definitely making a start this weekend!!!
Really enjoyed this, keep up the good work.
Great job, it looks really life like. Thanks for sharing all your tips for us all, keep up the good work and don't let COPPA stop you.
I’m only just started ,new hobby lol.If I can get my faces anywhere near yours sir ,I’ll be very happy.Glad I picked Vallejo paints .
You won't go wrong with them, especially for brush painting. Andrea Paint also good and Lifecolor too. All brush paint nicely.
Wow, can't do this on my 15mm figures, but this is truly impressive...excellent and stunning job!
Superb vid! Wish it would be longer and with a closer-up view, though. THANK YOU, I really enjoyed it
Hi it looks awesome and yes I'd like to see more of the bust painted how about painting a waffen ss figure
Very educational, I too would like to see the completely finished piece if that hasn't been accomplished yet, step by step of course.
Very nice done again💪 please Show how you made the clothes👍
Awesome... congrats.
Wow! Sean Connery approves it
I would like to see the body of the figure finished, it would be a shame not to see the completed figure as done in other excellent painted figures - keep it up really nice videos to follow
It's in the pipeline, it will be the next video. Was ill over Christmas so took a break in December. More videos starting in January, video on the body awaiting final editing.
Bellissimo grazie
Very nice work! Is the Citadel primer a lacquer?
I've seen this vid 5 or 6 times, and I always learn something. By the way, you have lightened somehow part of both iris, but it is not shown in the vid, am i right? .....superb vid!!!! I like these bust painting vids the best! Thank you!!
It's is possible, we reworked the iris several times and condensed down the footage (about 30-40 minutes) for editing. However, all shots are in order, but yes a bit of white could have been added.
Hi again I'm painting pegasos 1/9th waffen ss panzer commander I'm really enjoying it plus I think young miniatures should bring out full figures they would be excellent
Great, Think Young have some full figures, not many...
@@scalewarmachines I mean 200mm figures I know they do smaller ones 120mm would be welcome as well thanks for your reply
Amazing
Please show the painting of the whole figure.
Another amazing video. Really easy to follow and like the completion shot of each stage. I've ordered my first bust and your videos will really help.
What is the brush you use for the detail work?
Thanks. Historex Agents Kolinsky sable set mainly, with some Lifecolor and Windsor and Newton flat brushes and some Vallejo and Andrea fine sables too.
Is your flat brush your using for blending dry?
you have made a resin kit look great of the person it's supposed to be great work from a pro model builder
If you have an airbrush, why on earth do you use rattle cans to prime? Vallejo makes great primers in grey, white, and black. And you don’t get harmful vapors as you do with cans.
We do that too, watch the videos, plenty of shots of Vallejo, Ammo and AK surface primers, but here's one reason (especially valid in this case with busts) and if you have an extractor/respirator or both, it's quick and there's no clean-up. No tedious airbrush clean required after. They are tougher and dry to a tough state generally quicker too. There you go that's two reasons.
Scale War Machines good point, thanks!
I love Medieval history so much!
Please tell me you wore a mask when sanding the resin parts.
Great video. This gives me confidence to do my 1/35 figures.
Oh yes, you can see the 3m face face straps in the vid.
Does all the colors you used for the face come out of the same paint set such as the red or did some have to be purchased separate?
You can easily paint the face with just the shades in the set (see our last video), here the colours mostly came from the face set with a few separately and from the white/black set.
Is the blending brush used dry or slightly wet?
Dry, wet wouldn't work as well in most cases.
@@scalewarmachines Thank you!
Where do you get these busts in the states?
Maybe someone like Last Cavalry Models or check out the Young Miniatures website to find the US dealer network.
@@scalewarmachines thats where i found it. I assume yhey are a reputable company?
Believe so, they have a You Tube channel you can check out.
Where can you buy these figures?
Historex Agents will ship these (especially to Europe), check on Life Miniatures website to see if there is a stockist near you or in your country. If in North America, you need to find the distributor, should be listed on the website.
We’re you buy the kit
Historex Agents, they ship worldwide.
I d like it to... ;)
Is it just me or does the sculpt resemble Sean Connery?
