You honestly should just react to this whole album because it’s kind of revered as a true “movie” album. The skits between songs and the stories Kendrick tells so vividly in his verses really makes it a real theatrical experience. It’s probably the most accessible concept album I’ve ever heard.
Its maybe one of raps first concept albums?
Rock/prog has these and its always blown my mind. Still my favorite kendrick album.

Deff Kendricks best album has to be a top 10 rap album of all time
The guy who got killed the night before brother had called Kendrick to open up to him and tell him how he appreciated how he responded to his aid the night it happened. He also told Kendrick he wish that he had the aspirations that he have so that he could change his life and maybe live but he’s so caught up in the gang life that he won’t ever change and he hope that he’s around to hear the story but he got killed before the story was told, hence the gunshots.
Second verse was Keisha’s sister checking Kendrick about making a song about her sister, she didn’t appreciate that he did. She’s caught up in the same lifestyle as her sister was and living haphazardly while living it. She goes thru her first time up to she’s now worrying about taking care of herself cuz as far as she knows she’s good. Unfortunately she wasn’t, her voice fading out was her dying.
3rd voice is Kendrick’s response to both conversations.
Dying of thirst he’s explaining the circle that people go thru and don’t realize they’re running in circles cuz they’re getting results but wanna get out of the life they’re in.

This song makes me cry every time especially within the context of the album. Even watching this video I was wiping tears. I guess it has to be my favorite Kendrick song and probably one of my favorite songs of any artist. Kendrick truly has a gift.

at the beginning of the song(the 1st half) he is talking about a prostitute, and life from her perspective, and also talking about his super close friends brother who got killed, and they tried to find the killers and spin the block on them, in the end, it ends with them meeting a lady, who helps them give their life to God. Dying of thirst = thirst for God in their lives, and compassion. They are thirsty for a normal life, and peace. The very beginning talks about how kendrick held his friends brother, Dave, while he was dying, he told him he would be okay, and helped him pass peacefully, Dave was very appreciative of Kendrick for comnforting his brother, while Kendrick had a burden fall upon him, feeling like the death was on his hands. After the gunshots, he goes from Brenda's perspective(the prostitute who was later raped, and killed)

I don't think her name is Brenda, I believe she is unnamed. Brenda is the name of the girl from the Tupac song, Brenda's got a baby, that probably directly influenced this verse as it had similar themes.

Mother I sober and Father time are great songs from Kendricks new Album! He talks about generational curses with Fathers relationships to their sons and sexual abuse in families. Definately would be a great reaction from a therapist perspective

the gun shots at the end of the first verse also act like an ellipses ( . . . ) to the end of the verse
This a year old comment so this is kinda pointless lol but the gunshots coming right after "hope" also means that there's no hope for people who follow this lifestyle and whatever, I don't really remember the exact meaning so this is kind of a shit comment but you can look into it if you want to now that you're aware of it lol
I see many people talking about how great his storytelling is but for me this isn't storytelling, this is human introspective and extrospective poetry at it's finest. He's talking not only how he feels, but how others feel about him and his songs.
The first verse is from the positive perspective of his friend Dave's brother and how he feels about how Kendrick cared for Dave when he was shot and how he rose up to retaliate. The verse ends with the brother being shot as well, as if to subtley suggest that following down the continued path of violence and retaliation will inevitably lead to a sudden death.
The second verse is from the negative perspective of Keisha's sister. The sister's verse is largely negative, criticizing Kendrick for making a song about Keisha, a prostitute who was raped and murdered, telling Kendrick he has no right to judge the life they were thrown into. The verse fades out implying the sister is slowly fading into the same fate as Keisha.
The last verse is from Kendrick's perspective and he explains why he sings about these stories, to break the seemingly endless cycle of gang violence and prostitution that plague poor communties. I could go on for a few hours examining each line individually but I'll stop here.
The first two verses are from the perspective of other people speaking to Kendrick and the third verse is his response to them. The song after the changeup is about the aftermath of the friend whose death was described on first verse of the song (the brother of the narrator who died in Kendrick's arms).
you're missing a SIGNIFICANT bit of backstory by listening to this song, or pretty much anything off of Good Kid Maad City or To Pimp a Butterfly without listening to the whole album. Both albums are constructed like stories, and while any one song can stand on its own, the context is what makes both albums so good. It's like walking into a theater in the middle of an action sequence, you can appreciate the spectacle, but you're not seeing the story.

so the first verse is dave’s brother talking to kendrick about the night before (dave died the night before), the second verse is about a song kendrick wrote on his first album called “keisha’s song” about a prostitute who gets murdered, and that’s keisha’s sister talking to kendrick after hearing about it, the third verse is kendrick responding to them
It’s generally true with all of Kendrick’s albums, but this one for sure is one you have to from start to finish. He literally paints a full length movie with his lyrics.
The ending of the first verse hits me in "the feels" every time.

thirst is a word used in the West Coast alot throughout the ghettos when you lose your brother you're thirsty for blood for who ever is involed
it also called for a solution through the wise old woman's perspective which was baptism. Kendrick Lamar also has older songs that talked about his struggle with religion. that song is called faith. most of Kendrick Lamar's whole discography plays off of each other and creates one big movie which is the most unique aspect of him he is one of the best storytellers of all time when it comes to hip Hop. but not only because he tells stories but because the stories are relatable and most likely real.
The context of 3 verses in "Sing About Me" are the following:
The first verse is told in the perspective of the brother of Kendrick's friend David. David was killed in presumably a gang-related shooting, reference the skit at the end of "Swimming Pools [Extended]" from Kendrick's album "good kid, m.A.A.d city" for a better picture.
The second verse is told in the perspective of the sister of Keisha. Reference "Keisha's Song" from Kendrick's album "Section.80" for more context.
The third verse is told from Kendrick's own perspective.
Verse number 1 "Don't understand"
This song is incredibly scary for me to hyper focus on cuz when ol girl fades out my brain still in an emotional state I snapped back to the fact that I'm actually listening to a song in the first place and it fucks with my listening experience

This song serves as the climax to the plot/story running through the album Good Kid MAAD City. Good Kid MAAD City is a cinematic album that tells a completely true story of one day in Kendricks life at the age of 16 in Compton. The story & plot throughout the album is presented in a non-linear path (similar to Pulp Fiction), so you have to use the skits at the end or beginning of each song and the lyrics to piece the story together. The first verse on Sing about me and then the Skit in between Sing about me & Im dying with thirst and at the end are connected to the story of the album.

the first time i heard this song i cried at the gunshots at the end of the first verse.
i’ve been listening and relating to this song since i was 14 years old. over the years i’ve listened to and picked up on things differently as I’ve matured over the years. Kendrick always lectures, kendrick always preaches.
This song is so good. This is real hip-hop from the soul. One of the reasons Kendrick is so respected even by us old hip-hop heads. If you grew up in the latch key era you probably had some trauma too so the music of the day everyonce in a while had to touch the soul and make you think. It had to be authentic. There were times to be happy, or be dreamers. There were also the songs about reality.

With Kendrick, you have to listen to each song on his albums in order, because they always tall a story throughout each song that goes along with the next.

I’m sure Kendrick has somebody or multiple people in mind with this song but idk if he’s talking specifically about them but rather the cycle that his (and plenty other) communities live through that perpetuate hate and negativity. The people are victims to their circumstances and he’s depicting those struggles but also giving message to the better way of life. Fantastic video as always! I know you like to listen to a lot of J Cole on this channel. I’d suggest songs off the KOD album: in particular “FRIENDS” and “Once an Addict”
This is hands down one of my favorite, if not my favorite song.

The whole concept went way over his head. But he admitted that as well. But I point this out because if a doctor can't get it, you can understand how so many people out there don't get Kendrick's music. I'm convinced that this is the reason why there's so much task music out here that's dominating the numbers...they don't make you think. And it's always been the dissection of hip hop that made me a hip hop addict.

At 10:05 I think he’s saying that he wrote songs with the knowledge he will soon die, and left things in his songs we may hear after he’s long gone. I see this at the end of The Heart Part 5 too.
The first verse is about a friend who was shots brother, second is the sister of a prostitute that was murdered. He wrote a song about her on his last album. Third verse is from his prospective, sort of a response/reflection.

Hey! I just joined the community and so far I love it! Very passionate about mental health awareness and the emotions of other people. Seems very selfless and I respect it. A song that comes to mind that you may enjoy having a crack at would be; title: deja vu /Artist: Eminem. Eminem is easily one of the greatest hip-hop artists, with lyrics that can put you on a roller coaster. I think the community would really get a good feel for what it's like to be a parent and have to suffer the emotions of an addict with so much trauma with the only outlets he had were his daughters and the music he wrote. Give it a listen! I hope everyone is doing better than they were yesterday!

the chorus is kendrick consent to have his story and life experiences be shared after he’s gone. the good and the bad. the first two verses are from family members perspectives that kendrick’s rapped about previously but are too fond of kendrick putting their bad business out for the public. kendrick in the third verse is saying “hey. theses stories are bad but they need to be told to save our youth.” he’s seeing it as his responsibility to save the ones still struggling. it also plays into kendrick depression in some songs on TPAB , UU and DAMN as he has a major messiah complex to try and fix the people from his city
