I think comparisons are so tied to human nature that they are almost an inevidability in reviews and speculation. That is not a bad thing but we can look beyond it to find a games own identity beyond the shadow of BG3 or Skyrim. It is amazing to have so many choices as a rpg fan. I am really excited. Avowed moved to standout in a sea of releases but I hope they find their audience.
I think Larain and CDPR are going to be duking it out for the top RPG because both of their projects will be releasing about the same time! Thats going to be like two masterpieces going head-to-head!
Honestly I would've preferred another Pillars instead of a 1st person RPG, but I definitely understand RTWP CRPGs don't have the same mass appeal as this style of game
Want scope? Depth? Humor, horror, tragicomedy? Soul-rending frustration and dopamine highs rivaling a Rick James weekend bender? Play Everquest, make 6 characters, level them all up to 100, and then simultaneously run all 6 of them through the painful experience of getting their 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 Epics. 🤯😱🥳
We RPG fans really are getting so much. I was really attached to Greedfall, even though it was all janky. I was so invested in that story! So I’m going to wait for them to work out some of the jank…but I’ll probably get Greedfall 2. I’ve already preordered DAV and I can’t WAIT to play. And I love Obsidian’s games. That’s definitely on my list. We are getting so much right now.
Greedfall 2 looks mid af, greedfall 1 had a weird feel to it but it was enjoyable and the start of the game was really fun, but 2 just changes the combat ui and graphics for the worse from what i have seen, i personally sont have much hope for greedfall 2
@@fish5671 Being honest, I don’t even remember what the combat was like in Greedfall. I remember the AI being rough and I couldn’t make a character that didn’t look a little like a gremlin. The important part to me was that I was deeply invested in saving Constantin. My expectations for a tiny studio are realistic. All I need is a good story and lots of heart in the game.
It's not like they "can't compete" with other games. It's just that buyers' money will be spread more among other games. Example: If they are as good as (say) Stalker, then theoretically 50% of players will buy Avowed and 50% Stalker. And when there is no competitor nearby, they will buy only Avowed = 100% (very simplified example) So the judgment about the inability to compete is rather hasty.
More about perception than reality. If a game ducks out while others stay in the Perception isn't going to be from the casual player "this I'd a shrewd business move" but more like "oh they think they'll get crushed by that game" look no further than when. Bg3 bumped their release date forward to avoid starfield. Granted we saw how that worked out...😅
yeeeah, they picked the perfect date. To be compared to another first-person rpg that comes 7 days earlier, on 11th of February. And tbf, at least that one doesn't have combat that looks like Skyrim 1.5. I kinda want to play both, and for both to succeed because both studios delivered good rpg games in the past, but damn
Comparing Avowed to Skyrim is so unfair, this game has a narrative 😂 (I never found skyrim story rly good) and Pilars of Eternity to this day had one of my favourite twists in a game story.
I feel the melee combat is just Skyrim, and I hate it. Why you would use Skyrim as your attacks inspiration rather than dark Messiah... It's so bad that I just am not interested anymore. Unless february shows significant improvement to melee combat, I just...am not interested. I loved the reveal trailer, it looked like a dark, 100% first person focused game, I was excited because I thought they were going to create an amazing combat system, with deflects, interups, dismemberment, executions. Think...sekiro system for deflects, doom eternal type of executions, a full combo system like crimson desert, and kicks and environment interactions like dark Messiah... Tripe AAA is looking at systems from 13 years ago, not at the now, they aren't trying to push the medium, they aren't taking risks. Hopefully Alkahest does what this game should have combat wise.
IMO, Obsidian spreads out the talent too much. Call it a gut feeling but its what I feel. Larian was working on other titles at same time as BG3 was being developed in its 6yrs development cycle? Doubtful. But I gather from watching other companies say stuff like ...half our company is no longer working on #&^@ and has moved on to a new IP and I feel that company is going down the slippery slope of spreading out talent.
Looks like HD Skyrim. But hey compared to all the scope creep games lately, I'll take it.
Actually giving journalists a playable demo 6 months before release and positive reviews is a green flag. 👍👍👍

Can you imagine if we get a Witcher 4 and one of larians projects in the same year? Jeez that would be intense
Cyberpunk is barely an rpg, it's like calling far cry an rpg

Based on the limitations they have told us about, I'd rather see how it compares to Dark Messiah, not Skyrim.
Aorawful was right there man

The worst thing in any RPG

I forgot Skyrim had a story until I watched a review.
Skyrim does one thing better than every other single player rpg and it's clear Bethesda really recognized it during development: world building.
if IGN says it's good, I really worry how bad it'll be.
Good thing it wasn't just ign then 😅

Western devs keep trying to do first person melee combat and it keeps feeling awkward
Nothing managed to beat Dark Messiah when it comes to first person fantasy combat.
Realistic combat would go to Kingdom Come Deliverance.

Might I dare hope that the delay will be able to add romances? *sigh* ...I know. :(
Need to smooch Aloth again 🙏

Hmm, what did paid "reviewers" say? I wonder.
Dunno, cause the game journalists here aren't paid by the game companies 😅
@@RedbeardflynnRollsAOne If you say so.
