My favorite Hong Kong film.Great analysis, man. Really provocative. Hong Kong filmmakers used to have some really great characteristics of their tastes and selections of color and composition, but not any more... very sad.

This is some really good stuff. An analysis from someone who knows their film theory. I hope this gets popular and that you keep uploading more such things.

Thanks Ben for this second part. It is a great movie which opened my eyes to pay attention to Asian cinema. Thanks to it I further discovered all other Kar Wai's films, then searched for something similar so found Hsiao Hsien's films then Edward Yang, also Kim Ki Duk and Sion Sono. I am on my discovery of the Taiwanese new cinema so Im looking forward to it. I was mesmerised with Millenium Mambo. I love the mood that Kar Wai was able to insert into the film. I visited this year the actual filming location of those scenes on the street by the wall shot through the bars on the windows - it is in Bangkok, but it was in reconstruction. Yet, I enjoyed the moment there to see the actual place where this was shot. Overall, it is very inspiring to me, and teaches me a lot about the simple facts that great story well told with attention to details can speak so loud to us. I hope to make my own essay on this film soon.

This analysis is really great! in cinematography we sure have the visuals but in this I also got fascinated by the sound used for telling the emotions. They had used the slow-motion effects with an accurate scale of music(yumeji's theme) for telling the irony. There's this 1st slowmo were the people looks really happy but the background music is giving us sad vibes, as there's the entry of Mrs. Chow where the couple were sitting. its really good set.

Yeah exactly, I feel without the score as well this film would greatly suffer, it carries throughout the story, thanks for the quality comment.

    Thank you for this.
Can you do the one where she’s at the restaurant and the old man crosses from left to right in front of her? Smoke rises from the back.

Just saw this the other night by chance at local theatre: I think it’s fine to go in with spoilers because you will want to be so absorbed in the Beauty that have the plot highlights would allow you to do so. I only wish I could see it again but one night only and though I could watch again at home I’m thrilled I got to see it first time in proper venue. Masterful, the colours, the slo-mo, and the music made the love tension so palpable.
