So the softer ones are softer for a reason if you look on the back of the packet and it says not suitable for home freezing. Means they have been made months in advance then blast frozen. And pulled out the freezer about a week before they hit the supermarkets. That’s what makes them slightly softer freezing them. I know this because for the last month I’ve been picking them up from the various cold stores up and down the country
that i can believe as i know for a fact that swizzles and matlows start making their xmas range of sweets in the summer and im guessing that most if not all food companies are doing the same thing.
I love mince pies, I’d eat them all year round if they stocked them! Just an idea Gaz, when you think that products look like another same product, check the factory codes on the packaging! If they’re the same then they’re made by the same factory!
The best that I've had are the ones from the coop, not the 6 pack, but the 4 pack that's in the clear plastic package. They look homemade and covered in icing sugar. I find them very tasty.
Unlike the other brands Gaz, the Iceland mince pies have usually been in the top five in various tests, for years now. Good price too, mate👍. We get them every year🎄
So glad you have done this taste test . Trust your judgement implicitly , not keen on too sweet either , will be buying the Aldi ones for the price . Would be great if you carried on testing Christmas food for us. Christmas pigs on blankets and stuffing and shortbread biscuits would be a great help thank you ❤
I pack biscuits ,Shortbread and oatcakes for a company called Walkers. They're one of the biggest companys in Scotland. They also make mince pies for a lot of the supermarkets. I think a lot of these may have been made by them. I have worked in the mince pie factory and it was interesting to see the machine that puts the top on the mince pies thumping it on. I had the job of looking to see that the top of the pie was on correctly and if not sliding it into place before it went to get baked.
Haven't seen them yet in the stores in Canada. Did have a conversation with a neighbor after they dropped of a thanksgiving meal. When I replied, it was not bad, it was alright, they took offense. I explained where I come from that's a compliment. Your 'mmm' sealed the deal.
When I lived in British Columbia I couldn't find a Christmas pudding anywhere!!!!!! The mince pies didn't have lids. No shortage of craft dinner though!
I've tested them all over the last week or so ( Have the weight gain to prove it ;) ) Top of the shop are M&S, Collection £3.50 for 6 then Aldi Specially Selected £2.25 for 6, but for something unusual, but beautiful try the Aldi Extra Special Jamaican Rum Mince Tarts. They are a game changer!
I used to work in a trifle factory (st ivel) and we made same trifles for all the supermarkets but just changed the pots. With a few slight added ingredients for a few of the posher ones, such as almonds on top of a splash of sherry. It's possible those mince pies are also made in same factory but different packaging and a splash o booze. ?
My wife gets me a packet of mince pies every week! Over the years I have tried all the fancy ones and always find Sainsburys standardard ones four in a see through packet as good as you can get on both price and taste! had a packet a week for the last six weeks.
Mince Pies are honestly all much the same. I bought several boxes of Aldi at around £1.25 for a box of six, only to find the date doesn't last until Christmas. As you say, they were dry, soft pastry, and sweet, but they're as good as your "fancy" pies! They should call luxury food products, "Imagine The Difference!" and "Extra Expensive!" 🤣 I prefer to "eat modestly," and hang on to my "brass!" (I'm turning into my late father!) You SHOULD do a blind taste test, because your perception is swayed by brand, packaging, and price!
I love your reviews Gareth and have bought many items based on your taste test, Thanks for posting as it takes the guess work out of supermarket shopping.
Cheers Gaz for that . I usually pick up a box from Aldi . Not many young ones seem to go for em now days. Age thing warmed up custard cream or ice-cream needed as you say . My mum's didn't need that as the pastry was ace. 🌲.
Hmm love mince pies trying to resist the temptation as it’s November . Once I start eating them it’s hard to stop ….😂. Like em warm with splodge of brandy butter on …oh yeah !! 😋🎄🎄 Thanks for sharing Gareth 🍺
Great and honest review Gaz as always my Mrs with only have Greggs’ ones only because the pastry is thinner as you know you have to keep them happy 🤣👏👏👍👍
I feel the need to remind all that mince pies originally contained... Real mince beef! A lot, by volume. And suet and all sorts of things. Incredible memories of my parents preparing the mincemeat in... September? Mrs. Beeton or Elisabeth Davies cookbook IIRC... I was very young back then, very late 70s I think, all manner of sultanas, currants, raisins, candied fruit, various sugars and... Brandy! Lots of it! Put in glass jars, turned regularly and topped up with more brandy reularly for 2 months. In December the resulting pies were beyond belief, unbelievably good!
I'm a frangipane mince pie addict. The best I've had were from Aldi but I've not had M&S ones. The pies you just tried..... not being able to decide is an actual decision in itself. What I mean is why pay £3 when you get a very similar pie for £2.19.
im sure that mince pies started to appear in my local co-op at the start of september and iv been told the easter eggs will be put out on jan 2nd , unless they are already out , ill be going in my co-op later so ill have a look and as someone said below co-op do a 4 pack that used to be £1 (probs now £1.50 knowing the co-op) and they were very nice.
I prefer to wait until Aldi gets the various mince tarts in store. From 9 November apparently. There are several different ones, such as Frangipani, Almond, and Jamaican rum. These are streets ahead of other mince pies. I'm looking forward as well to the festive sandwiches. The smoked salmon and cream cheese is superb and this year there is a seafood cocktail sandwich and a pigs in blankets roll. But you have to get there early, because each day's stock sells out quickly.
Thank you Gaz 👍♥️ for the taste test on mince pies, as you say it's folks preference but I do love Iceland luxury one's 🤤😋 Have a lovely day Gaz and family ❤
During the festive season, I frequently buy, M&S, Iceland luxury & Co-Op finest mince pie's. Value wise, the Iceland one's are hard to beat. Taste great, too.
Try your favourite mince pie hot, with Walls' Cornish ice cream. I mostly eat either Sainsbury's or M&S mince pies but my all time favourites are from a Sussex bakery chain, name of "Truffles"; delicious! Another excellent video BFG.
I usually only buy mince pies instead of Xmas pudding. Warmed up, with cream. tbh? They all taste the same to me. I usually get mine from Lidl or Asda. I know you don’t have a Lidl, but I’ve found that Lidl and Aldi usually sell the same items, equally priced, just under a different name. A good review though. Maybe there was no winner on taste, but you did show there was a winner on price. 👍🏻. Perhaps you could do a similar multi test on Xmas puddings ? That’s usually where the difference in taste and ingredients stands out. Keep up the good work mate. I love your honesty when reviewing food and you have certainly saved me wasting money on stuff I might not like.
I bought some of the Aldi cheapo ones, think they were around a quid, in the red box and they were lovely. Bought another box a week later, and they tasted completely different. 😮 Best ones ive had were homemade ones from my local farm shop, sell out quick tho.
Each to their own taste as some like a sweet filling , some more alcohol. Some like a soft pastry some crunchy. In our home we prefer home made mincemeat with plenty of suet which we make several months prior to Christmas to mature. My own melt in mouth pasrty. Umm yummy. Very good honest review again. Thank you
One of the best things about Christmas is getting stuck into the mincemeat pies, one is never enough for me Gareth,my wife's Aunt was the cook in a big well known Ayr Hotel and she used to give us a big box of home made ones every year, delicious, in a bowl with loads of double cream is my favourite way of eating them,my mouth is watering here just watching this, another great review big pal
6 mince pies are £2.50 at Waitrose ... 6 mince pies at Marks & Spencer £2.50 or if you want the M&S collection ones £3.50 for 6. At Sainsbury's 6 mince pies £2.75p (£1.75p with nectar card) or 6 basic mince pies £1.60p. At Morrisons it's 6 mince pies for £2.50.
Nobody makes mince pies like my old grandma used to make, she had the knack haha. As I’m watching this, the wife and my mother are chatting about mince pies 😂 My mum says Morrison’s are the best, but only because she works there (she’s weird like that 😂). I like mince pies with some good old squirty cream. Wife likes them warmed up with some ice cream. Cheers Gaz for the review 👍🏼🇬🇧🇬🇧
Brought a box of Tesco this week at club card price of £1-50, so half price & makes it the cheapest to buy at present, very enjoyable & another box will enter my shopping basket before the weekend 👍
Morrisons were the best mince pies last year ... just sayin'. Lovely and moist pastry but then again you are going by how fresh they are when you get your mitts on them but they were a level above the Tesco and Co-Op ones I bought. Hi all, looks like they all have booze in lol hohoho 🎅🎅🎄this is last years mince pie review includes M&S ua-cam.com/video/SpVsfd1JcUk/v-deo.html prices will be more this year 😢
I'd go with Aldi but buy the brandy sauce and maybe add a further shot to the sauce to make it really strong in alcohol content. Bit like adding brandy to the Xmas pudding.
I remember making mince pies at school in the 70's and you took some home for your folks all proud and that. I bet they used to go straight in the bin as what's with the rock hard pastry back in the day at school , you could certainly defend yourself in a riot with them. 😂👍

Morrisons do a good deep fill mince pie in shortcrust, yummie, gotta love a mince pie specially a boozy one 😁 a nice little festive comparison Gareth 😋 👍
Hello Gaz loving your videos. One thing I noticed recently is that you don't read out the ingredients on items you review now..was good help for me as I have dairy allergies..
It’s good to see mince pie comparison to other makes of mince pie i bake me own which does taste much better Gareth I would call it a draw another good honest food review good job
my favourites this year are, surprisingly, Mr Kipling All Butter Mince Pies. labelled as Best Ever. They are expensive though. (check the label - they are not the normal Mr Kipling pies)
Yes Gareth the review was inconclusive… Get the others if you can…. I’m not sure which mince pie to have as a dessert after my Pot Noodal starter and Pukka Christmas pie main😂👍
Despite Iceland selling horrible food their Mince Pies are excellent, far outweighing M&S for price too. They used to sell a dozen in a box ( not sure if they still do ) but i`d rather buys theirs.
Thanks for the trouble you took to bring us your review. I'd probably go for the Asda ones based on your taste test BUT I see the Tesco ones are on clubcard offer of £1.50 ( down from £3) until 20th November. It's a difficult decision 😅.

We make our own mince meat and jar it and have mince pies sometimes in June or September. So easy to do. If you want help, just ask.
@@ianthomas1060 thanks 👍🏻
We're just outside London and supermarkets like Tesco have had them and other Christmas food on sale since September

Yes! I agree
You are Spot on excellent mince pies.
Give the Greggs mince pies a try, they seem to have a nice shortcrust pastry and the mincemeat is tasty.

Love the vids when you doing a crimbo pud ? I love the Morrisons one and LIDL Florina one too
Yes will do
Yes Gareth the review was inconclusive… Get the others if you can…. I’m not sure which mince pie to have as a dessert after my Pot Noodal starter and Pukka Christmas pie main😂👍
I get sick of mince pies so I make it a rule that I only eat 6 over the whole season.
THATS VERY HONEST thank you.
