Agreed! Trans people, like everyone else, should be able to live the life they choose. At the same time, we must protect the health of children who are still learning about their bodies. Transition is right for some people who are of age, but not everyone.

@@HeadRedShot I mean, legally trans children are required to take puberty blockers until they reach the age of adulthood before they can begin HRT. The most harm the former can do is, well, delay puberty - if a child decides HRT is not for them, they can simply hop off the blockers with no ill effects. There can be cases of children actually taking HRT, but they're few and far between, honestly.

Also children on puberty blockers tend to be more suicidal. Little to no long term studies have been done. proof for negative side effects are severely lacking, and short term effects show to be extremely minimal. rejecting people puberty blockers now until "long term" evidence is shown is incredibly irresponsible because there are people in severe need of it. if anything it would just be worse to reject people from getting puberty blockers because the 20% youre talking about might get breast cancer after top surgery. puberty blockers would remove that potential risk and tons of others.

I've been saying we need more info-rich, fact-based videos that are short and graphical and fun to watch. Your average person who is confused on these issues won't sit through an hour-long lecture on youtube, and people pushing gender ideology have a ton of humorous, light hearted, appealing videos pushing their narrative. I'm so happy to see a video that offers so much important information in a way that is easy and fun to digest. Thank you!

Before John Money, the nouns sex and gender were synonyms. Many people and check-lists on forms used the noun gender instead of sex so as not to bring in the verb sex (eg intercourse). Money created the terms gender identity etc. and Rothblatt, the Pritzker's, etc dumped millions of dollars to change the definition of the word gender to mean how one things about oneself in terms of being male or female. Absolutely, we should not be telling little children that they are boys or girls based on whether they like trucks or dolls. However, most trans people are not transgender because of gender.
There is something in all our brains that tells us we are one sex or the other. Then, at toddler age we learn that male is called boy and female is called girl, and we do something all girls and boys do: we self-gender-socialize with the gender associated with the sex we think we are. In the words of Simone de Beauvoir, it turns us into girls and boys. The only difference is in trans children that thing in our brain is reversed or indecisive.

The idea I'm getting from this video is the idea of saying
"'You look and/or act like' the opposite sex, therefore you are"
is regressive and just enforces stereotypes
There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying Blaire White & Caitlyn Jenner, etc are men
and Buck Angel & Elliot Page are women.
Like why do the sexes have to have a specific look or temperament?
    Sounds pretty stereotypical to me
I mostly value consistency so words such as
"male/female, he/she, boy/girl, and man/woman should continue to refer to the 2 sexes
rather than something as fickle as "gender" which is more of a masculine/feminine thing
But I also believe gender should stay in linguistics to refer to and arbitrarily categorize words
and not be used for human beings

I love the message of this video! Yes gender has a connection to biological sex however it is so much more subjective, whereas biological sex is so much more objective. Also we should be able to live with the knowledge that our interests or personality type doesn’t mean we are born in the “wrong body” that is regressive and sexist like you said! We should encourage people to love their bodies and be themselves fully at the same time! Its ok for us to acknowledge gender but not to define ourselves by gender! Also while we can make a connection with gender and sex we have to remember it’s still separate. Otherwise how can we make a connection in the first place if we haven’t already defined sex entirely on it’s own completely separate from the mind? There’s no way to make a connection if we haven’t already established a distinction beforehand. 😊 amazing video once again 👌👌

I love this channel , I want to add that gender was born as a grammar thing to define masculine and feminine . English is a pretty genderless language but many languages have genders on any words , I’m from Italy so Italian is one example , anything is gendered , cause in Italian there is not just one article ( like in English that there is only “the “) , we have masculine article ( il ) singular , feminine singular ( la ) , masculine plural ( gli, I ) , feminine plurale ( le ) , all is gendered in languages like Italian , Spanish , French , Portuguese and many others . La sedia ( the chair ) has a feminine gender , of course a chair doesn’t have a sex . Sex is referred to biology and living things not to concepts or objects . In English though there is some gendered things , like for example , a tornado can have a gender , like the tornado Katrina or whatever it’s called with a feminine name , so she has a gender , still of course a tornado can’t have a sex . So sex is about animals , humans and in plants too in some cases , gender is about grammar . The word gender doesn’t apply in medicine or in biology but in grammar .

I think this was overall a good video but for around the last two minutes I got some strong PragerU vibes. I'm pretty sure there is no evidence that it is a significant issue that boys (biogical men) are told theyre girls (biological women) because they dont conform to gender stereotypes and vice versa. Very often people of a certain gender dont conform to the stereotypes associated with their gender. But in that case, almost no parent then instantly thinks "well theyre the different sex" or "well theyre the different gender". Most transgenders and transsexuals come out to their environment themselves (of course you cant change your sex yet but say that you want to be treated as it) and then their parents or if theyre old enough they themselves maybe decide to socially and legally transition.
Now a response to the conclusion: Yes, your gender expression is not able to change your sex. However, because gender is a matter of identity, and we cant read others thoughts to see what theyre truly thinking, by saying you are certain gender makes you that gender, no matter what gender stereotypes apply to you. There are probably many trans women with a masculine gender expression or trans men with a feminine gender expression. Again the issue you described in the last two minutes isnt something you observe from your environment. Rather the contrary, states (such as Alabama recently) denying trans youth the means to transition is much more common and should therefore be talked about way more in this video.
It just seems like you are a well researched biologist, who then was paid to fit in a little bit of political agenda at the end. Please dont delete this comment ;)

  • @thivjan3022

For the ones confused as to why gender is not just abolished because it just reinforces stereotypes, my take on it is that its simply because it helps us understand how certain groups of people are treated within society, kind of like how race works, race is a social construct as well and needs to be abolished but if you abolish it, it makes it hard to understand how different groups of people are treated within society so unless, gender equality is reached same goes to racial equality they can't be abolished or rather shouldn't. And before someone tells "well that is just asking too much", you are forgetting to take into account that for the vast majority of human existance race and gender have not been a thing and thus were not used as tools to oppress groups of people, and humans are not born racist or sexist rather they are products of our society.

"Gender" and "Sex" used to mean practically the same thing. The only time "gender" was used exclusively is in Social Studies to connote masculine and feminine roles which are still attributed to sex. "Gender" was used mostly to avoid sounding explicit because "sex" also meant f- king.

At BEST "gender" is just a synonym for "the stereotypes of one of the sexes".
At WORST (and the way it's commonly used, today) it's just murky, vaguely-defined mess of near-meaningless, somewhere between "a mood", "a vibe", and something comparable to "sub-cultures" like "goths", "scene kids", "jocks", etc.
"Gender" only has ANY real meaning, if it's inherently linked with sex.
But if REMOVED from it's connection with sex, how is "gender" anything except a pointless set of constraints, who's only really purpose is to enforce social norms?
The mental gymnastics needed, to think that a society who cares about "gender", but essentially denies/ignores sex, is somehow a GOOD thing, are just baffling to me.

Unfortunately the normative dimension influences the descriptive reality heavily. Also read up on Gina Rupon! She wrote ''The Gendered Brain'', which discusses how the small differences we find in male versus female brains, plus the general differences in behavior, are not a product of biology, but rather a product of socialization from an incredibly early age. She discusses how our brains are much more mallable than is assumed, also by scholars, and how many scholars are still searching for the existence of a ''gendered brain'' that doesn't exist. Not to mention that the diversity in traits and behavior within male and females is much greater than the diversity between them, even living in societies that impose extremely different socialization and expectations based on your sex. Plus gender ideas and expectations differ between cultures. E.g. in Turkey most hairdressers are men, it's seen as a male job, whereas in the West it's generally seen as a female job.

I don't know why conservatives believe people are forcing kids to transition. It is insanely difficult for a child to even be allowed to transition because they typically need to have notes from a therapist, permission from parents, and even then the medical staff might just postpone the treatments for no good reason. And if a child is at all unhappy with being treated as a different gender (meaning they are cis) then it will be very obvious after going through all that trouble. But if a child is trans and they are given the treatment they want or need (like being called a different name or pronouns, wearing different clothes, or medically transitioning) then it will be clear because of their gender euphoria. so, yes, masculine girls and feminine boys do exist, but the distinction between them and trans/nonconforming children is obvious and the trans kids need to be treated how they want to be treated

I understand that cis females often feel uncomfortable with having biological males in their toilets, however, this actually applies to biological females who look masculine, which can happen when trans males take hormones. Also, trans females who have gotten puberty blockers can look female.

Gender is based upon biological sex and certain behaviors which tend to be correlated with them. However, the particular norms, roles, stereotypes, or other features that go into the gender "boxes" vary by culture, place, and time. Realistically speaking, there are multiple "flavors" of man and woman through culture, place, and time, sort of like "chocolate" and "vanilla": in one context they may "taste" differently than another. In other words, what's in the man box in one context is not what's in the man box in another context. Some societies have boxes other than man and woman, and those tend to be reserved for social members who do not conform to what's expected of them in the man and woman boxes of their own societies. Generally speaking, those other boxes are stigmatized and aren't generally thought of as "good". They are seen as defective or unusual and the other boxes are created as a compromise which allows them to still participate in their societies. Sometimes they have to do with pure economics. I.e., in some cultures, when two men love and live together, one becomes the "wife" not because he is trans of any sort, but because one person needs to do the "womanly" duties so that the household survives! Another way of looking at it is that many cultures have a concept of "shirt" but the style of shirt in each culture varies. I'd say that a reasonably accurate thing to say is that there are two biological sexes, with a range of phenotypical distributions, and a great many genders, which do cluster around "man" and "woman" but vary greatly by culture, place, and time.

I really wish these were good videos, but they aren't informative at all. They are manipulative instead. You begin every video with an serious and "honest" outlook on the scientific debate, but then you usually end them with an obviously political and ideological argument based on nothing at all.
While this could be a good video about how sex and gender are currently defined and discussed, it instead preys on people fear that the "trans" are "telling kids they are trans too". You provide no proof or evidence that it is common for children to be defined trans by their parents because of toys or clothes they like, but you make it sound like a very dangerous problem on current society. You also frequently use transphobic authors as sources even when non-transphobic authors could be used to say the same things. In one video you even use "gender theorists" as a synonymous term to phony scientists, when many serious scientists discuss gender nowadays.
It is no surprise that, while you supposedly "respect" trans people, your comment section is often filled with transphobes who are here to gather arguments in order to attack gender identity advocates and trans people. If this is on accident, which I doubt, I would ask you to really rethink your sources as well as your main concerns, or at least take your time to better position yourself on these matters. Trans people are not choosing to be trans. You may discuss that hormonization is a choice (which of course it is) just as taking any kind of medical treatment is a choice, but choosing to call yourself "boy" or "girl" goes way beyond the basic biological discussion you keep stating your videos are about.
A boy who dresses like a girl is not necessarily a girl, but they might be. The basis of transactivism is about respecting the "might be" part, whether the person dresses or not in a determined way is not how most trans people understand if someone (or themselves) is trans. When you end your video using "boy" and "girl" in a deterministic fashion, you are contributing to the confusion about the difference between sex and gender that you are supposedly trying to prevent. What did you mean by boy and girl at the end? Boy as in a biological male of a certain age, or boy as in the gender identity "boy/man"? You do not make it clear, even tho' that is the entire point of the video.

and then you go on to claim that those people are defining sex based on those choices. They aren't, they're defining gender, which, unlike sex, is mutable. So when someone claims that a biologically male child is female because of the gender roles they choose for themselves, they aren't attempting to redefine sex, they're labeling gender.

it's so confusing because both terms are used very interchangeably in daily life. when someone asks me what my gender is, aren't they just asking what sex/age category i belong to? i am an adult human female, so i recognize that i am a woman. if gender refers to sex stereotypes, then i don't want to say my ~gender~ is woman because the only thing i base my womanhood on is my biological sex, not cultural femininity or masculinity. since these terms are so conflated i usually take gender to be a humanization (for lack of a better term...) of sex categories which includes age, and gender identity to be equal to sex stereotypes.
why do governments change sex on legal documents because of gender identity? what is with this push to change sex if it doesn’t equal gender? with no need for supporting documents, in ontario you can change your sex on your driver’s license to X which means “gender neutral” but the category is your sex. surgery is not required for sex designation (f or m) change either, so it is not based on biological sex even slightly. if sex is different from gender, why is sex being changed? i feel like meanings for both words change so dramatically depending on who you talk to.

I enjoyed this video, but I think you are making a mistake by accepting and advancing the idea that there exists some thing called "gender" that is distinct from sex. It seems to me that the thing you are labelling "gender" is nothing more than sex stereotypes, and your distinction between "descriptive" gender and "normative" gender is simply the distinction between identifying sex stereotypes and imposing sex stereotypes. When you suggest that we should separate expectations of how men and women should act from biological sex, I think all you are saying is that we should not be imposing negative judgements on people who do not conform to sex stereotypes, and that is well and good. But we do not need to appeal to some new concept "gender" in order to do that. Indeed, as even you go on to show, identifying these sex stereotypes as some thing called "gender" that is essential to a person's identity has precisely the same effect as imposing sex stereotypes, but in the opposite direction. Whereas embracing sex stereotypes results in the perception that, if you are a girl you should engage in behavior X, embracing this notion of "gender" results in the perception that, if you engage in behavior X, you are a girl. This is exactly why advocates of gender ideology would say, contrary to your usage, that the terms "boy/man" and "girl/woman" are gender categories, not sex categories.
To achieve your goal, we need to understand that "gender" is an incoherent concept, does not refer to anything real, and has nothing to do with a person's personal identity. All people, regardless of sex, have many individual personality traits and behavioral tendencies that define their identity, and that while some of those characteristics may *tend* to be shared by others of one sex or the other, they are not definitional to what sex is or how members of a given sex should behave. And we do not need to invent a new concept called "gender" to make that argument.

Hey Zach. I appreciate your video and agree with everything halfway. I studied veterinary medicine and I have decent knowledge about how both human bodies and animal bodies work. I am transgender myself for 4+ years since 15. Sex and gender are separate concepts that relate to each other, they're not the exact thing but gender depends on sex. As a transgender person I don't deny the existence of biological sex, but neither do I deny the existence of gender dysphoria and transgender identity. I feel like you have good knowledge about biology but as soon as you started talking about gender you completely went off-road. Transgender people aren't told they're boys because they like trucks or girls because they like dolls (yes, there may be certain rare cases of such thing happening but that isn't for all the cases of trans kids). When I was 15 I realized I was trans and came out to my parents at 17, they freaked out. Being trans is much much more than just liking the activities, social roles of opposite sex, but also identifying as opposite sex and feeling mentally as such. Intersex conditions don't create a third sex, but they are very good proof of existence of gender, since someone can be born with female phenotypic genitalia but choose to live as male or don't feel like neither male and female and live as something in-between. Biological sex doesn't tell the entire story about someone's identity. Please learn more about this topic from unbiased places or learn from transgender people (there are tons of subreddits on Reddit). genderdysphoria.fyi explains it well too. Now for the criticism: the statement at 5:12 is flat-out wrong. No girl has ever been told she is a boy based on her toy preferences, and vice versa. That might be taken as one aspect of a bigger picture, but a diagnosis of gender dysphoria would never be made on that basis alone. And the child is not just "told"; their input is sought at every stage of the process. The general rule for diagnosing gender dysphoria in children is that they must have been "persistent, insistent and consistent" in their cross-gender statements and behaviors. This would obviously require monitoring over several months at least.

Hi Daz, thanks for your comment! I've been interested in studying human psychology and understanding how biology and society influence our differences for a long time. I started really getting into the topics around 2017, and I've written two books on the scientific literature of sex differences. I come at this from a place of pure curiosity, and also wanting to help others. There's a lot of bad information out there and vitriol, so I want to have a positive effect on others and hopefully help them learn things in an engaging way. I started making these videos in 2020, since I felt like there was a need for clear animated videos on these topics.
As for the criticism of 5:12, that is a common critique of this video. Nothing is wrong with someone transitioning to the opposite sex who is of age. Nothing wrong with people expressing themselves how they see fit. However, what I see wrong with the current diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria in children is that it relies on the child's discomfort with gender stereotypes and their body. These are both normal things for children to experience (especially during puberty), and many of them grow out of it. There's a tendency for parents and physicians to rely solely on the child's statements about what they 'feel' they are, instead of recognizing that they will likely grow out of the dysphoria. If they do not grow out of it, and if psychological help doesn't work, then transition should certainly be an option for them if they are an adult.
The end of the video is focused on safeguarding kids and pointing out an important truth: that one can be okay with their body while still breaking down gendered norms.
Thanks for the substantive feedback :)

@@zachelliott3076 Hi Zach. I only just saw you replied because UA-cam didn't notify me for some reason (thanks UA-cam...).
I think puberty blockers are justified for children who meet the criteria (substantial long-term expression and display of cross-gender behaviors and statements, etc.). The reason for this is they allow time for a mature decision to be made, and they will mitigate an incredible degree of potential harm if the child turns out to be truly trans. Once you go through puberty, it's way more difficult to transition and pass (for MtF trans people especially). The chance of making the rest of their life easier outweighs the harm of a slightly delayed puberty if they decide they are not trans.
One other thing - I've noticed most of your videos are about sex, but that's not the crux of the disagreement about trans people. Male/female are terms defined by scientific consensus, and so are not controversial or up for debate. But man/woman are defined by societal consensus, and this is where the impasse between the left and right lies.
Conservatives (and TERFs) generally think that "woman" should mean "adult human female". But for progressives, it's a little fuzzier. Generally, they consider someone a woman if they identify as a woman and/or are recognized and treated by society as a woman. Thus, who is considered a woman can vary from one society to another. (Gender is, after all, a social construct.)
Speaking descriptively, I think the progressive definition is more accurate, based on how the majority of people use the word. Most people would agree with the statement "Blaire White is a woman" (while still acknowledging that she is biologically male). It wouldn't make sense for someone referring to her to say "You see that guy over there? That's him." That would only cause confusion.
So if you can resolve this disagreement over definitions, you will have solved the whole debate. It may be an impossible task though.

How is it that a newly hatched ideology is able to supersede logic and historical usage to arbitrarily demand that the words "Gender" and "Woman" no longer mean what they have meant for thousands of years? Reason does not work that way. The definition of a horse and buggy is not suddenly redefined to mean an automobile. A new category is coined to define the new addition. There is plenty of room for new categories and no need to rob old ones of their meaning.

Gender Dysphoria is basically distress from having a different sex and gender. Being trans means having a sex and gender that don't correspond. Not all trans people feel distress/dysphoria, but they still identify with a gender that doesn't correspond with their sex.

I also think most men can bear and perhaps even prefer independent and strong woman. I doubt though, that women like "feminised" men - and dresses are definitely feminising. The very groups which advocate for trans rights are also the ones who advocate for more liberty when it comes to gender expression. Conversly, people who oppose Gender Transition are the ones who cling to antiquated normative gender roles. If such a thing were to happen, it would be bad. No one needs to be told by others what their gender is, that much is clear. Simone de Beauvoir was correct in saying that one is not born a woman, she becomes a woman. But, her mistake, like in this video, is that she implies a distinction between sex and gender. Humans are actually mammals with much of our behavior determined at conception. So, in actuality, the human is born a girl and becomes a woman, or is born a boy and becomes a man. Part of that "becoming" is puberty. If we actually eliminate the word "gender", then we are stuck with the more accurate understanding that genetics and biology along with culture and environment construct roles or expressions of the two sexes. It is hard to distinguish exactly what is from genetics and what is from culture. Perhaps clothing styles could be rooted solely in culture although environmental factors might also play a part. Sex roles or sex expression also connote sexual behavior, which is not so outrageous since evolution by natural selection requires this activity between the two sexes for procreation. To get away from this uncomfortable carnality we use the phrase "gender roles" rather than "sex roles". Postmodernism deconstructs sex-gender roles by focusing on the psychological and sociological implications. It ignores biology similar to Simone de Beauvoir but in a much more exaggerated and dual way. A form of body-psyche dualism is created similar to body-soul dualism found in Christianity. In the end, a whole new religious-like psyche world of Gender Spectrum.

"Gender" and "Sex" used to mean practically the same thing. "Gender" was used mostly to avoid sounding explicit because "sex" also meant f- king.
However, "gender" has been given a new definition by the woke trans mob to also mean self-perception. In this sense, "gender" is reduced to a mere fantasy and not necessarily real.
Thus, we can all reject anyone's self-perceived gender because that is just their fantasy. It's simply not true and no one has to play along with it.

And saying, sex is binary doen't say, it's "mostly binary", what would that even mean?

And no this generation has a single motive of "not offending", someone might have cancer, it's a bug in their cells, we won't lie to them and tell them they don't have cancer and let them live like nothing is wrong just to not *offend them* , risking their life in the process.

    • @Feds_the_Freds
      @Feds_the_Freds 2 роки тому

@@Synthetic_geth why lame? I want to genuinely understand it, as many scientists, who obviousely know more than me on this topic, see it that way that sex is binary and I just don't get it in the wake of apparent exceptions.
Black would be an exception, if the rule would be called, that most swans are white. If the rule would be, that every swan is white, a black swan would cause an error, if you want to make that analogy. So errors and exceptions are different, right? errors shouldn't happen, exceptions can happen and are prepared for with a solution on what to do, errorson the other hand are just arrors and the code can't really do anything with it.
So what are intersex people, are they errors, because the rule is, that everyone is either male or female, or are they exceptions, because the rule is that most people are either male or female and this is still classified as binary, because it's biology and not maths?
I don't understand? Couldn't the cancer be fixed and at the same time it not be called a bug in the cells? ofc it is sometimes called a bug in the cells, but it can also just be viewed as something, that would kill the person, if it doesn't get fixed, that wouldn't happen with intersex people, as far as I'm aware. And a bug in the cells could theoretically be fixed (of course, cancer treatment isn't that far, as far as I know but still, theoretically, you can imagine it getting fixed), with intersex, how would that even look like? what is it a bug of? and how would a theoretical fix look like?
But that aside, isn't that analogy even more offensive? As cancer is a sickness and as far as I'm aware, intersexness not. I could be wrong, I don't know enough on this topic, but either intersex people are sick, because they are intersex and something needs to be changed in their dna or it's not a sickness and the analogy doesn't really fit, as with cancer the one who has it, sees the cancer themself as a bug and wants to get rid of it.

I appreciate this video and many points made. I do have a difference of opinion concerning the separation of sex and gender. It's completely unnecessary and has provided fuel for those who deny the gender binary. Meanwhile, it's much more effective and aligned with reality to use the specific phrasing cited in this video "gender expectations" to describe the difference between biological gender and the societal expectations of one's biological gender. There's a thousand ways to express manhood and a thousand ways to express womanhood, but if we want a healthy functional society, we err very much to not have some gender expectations. For example, I don't find it regressive at all to insist a male child not wear a dress.
While biology is not the whole of what an individual is, it's also not a meaningless thing, which is partly why the gender distinction should carry with it some societal gender expectation as well.

  • @FullMoongrn
    @FullMoongrn 3 роки тому +2

Biological sex is either male or female.
Contrary to what is commonly believed, sex is defined not by chromosomes or our genitals or hormonal profiles, but by gametes, which are mature reproductive cells.
There are only two types of gametes: small ones called sperm that are produced by males, and large ones called eggs that are produced by females.
There are no intermediate types of gametes between egg and sperm cells. Sex is therefore binary. It is not a spectrum.
Similar to sex, gender - both with regard to identity and expression - is biological. It is not a social construct, nor is it divorced from anatomy or sexual orientation. Despite what contemporary scholars may have you believe, all of these things are very much linked. Biology, not society, dictates whether we are gender-typical or atypical, the extent to which we identify as the sex we were born as, and the partners we are sexually attracted to.
Anyone who brings in the phenomenon of 'intersex' to supposedly demonstrate that sex is non-binary has not fully understood it either. Intersex people are people born with a mix of what is masculine and feminine. But even intersex people can still be defined as male or female by checking which of his or her two genitals are active. If it produces sperm, it is a male. If she produces eggs, it is a female.
It is biology, hate it or love it.

    1. Do you not think you're putting words into the mouth of Simone de Beauvoir a little?
    2. I dislike the framing that assumes that children are having this enforced onto them, because even under current practise these are seen as symptoms not as reasons. Children are not just put up for HRT if they happen to play with trucks or wear dresses, its a long and complicated procedure of checks to assertain whether this path is the best path for the child (and future adult). And if its not a long and rigourous process then the child has been failed in my eyes and the eyes of many who believe the same as me.
    3. This ignores the slightly evidence lacking but very real possibility of internal brain sex/gender. That there is something in your brain that if its a certain way gives you gender dysphoria in some states, gender euphoria in others and gender aphoria in others still and that supposedly lines up in trans women - cis women and trans men - cis men.
    4. I watched your other videos on your definition of sex which (TLDR) you define as [SRY gene status and gamete production]. Thats fine and all but does that not render sex a bit of a technicality and a little irrelevent in determining safety of various groups, as hormone composition and muscle pattern are far better indicators of peoples' relative threats to eachother and trans (gender+hrt) people corrolate with the sex/gender they are transitioning to?
    5. This entirely ignores nonbinary (a purely gender phenomenon) social experiences.
Sorry for the long comment I briefly wanted to touch on all my qualms. You make informative videos that even if I disagree with the messeging and the political push of them, the science is all correct. I wish you personally all the best. xx

On its own it is just the kid is playing with friends of the opposite gender and thats fine.
Paired with other symptoms, one of which would probably have to include continual identification with children of the opposite sex and self separation from children of the same sex.
What actions children enguage in can be a great diagnostic tool and often times an ignored one and I know because I had a childhood psychologist look at me and basically just say "delayed development, a teaching assistant will do" without identifying the really obvious symptoms of various things, part of which included unusual play habits.

@Josh the Art Critic I do understand why it feels like but every person I've met advocating for them is actually a gender abolitionist (part of which is the complete gettting rid of these stereotypes). The idea usually is that these "stereotypes" may be good for diagnosing people right now but in another (hopefully) couple of decades we'll be in a place where children can feel free enough to express themselves and this will no longer be a good heuristic.
I would agree if the only thing a child has done is be a little gender-non-conforming then it would be abuse to transition them, but thats not whats going on by and large. Calling it an illness is wrong but think of it like a sneeze. It can be a sign of the common cold or a full on flu and only looking for other symptoms will let you know whether a hot chocolate or meds are the right thing to reach for.
That being said conflating trans ness and viruses might be a bit of a sore note spot right now.

He is not putting words in Simone's mouth. The full quote is "One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman. No biological, psychic, or economic destiny defines the figure that the human female takes on in society; it is civilization as a whole that elaborates this intermediary product between the male and the eunuch that is called feminine".. And in the rest of the chapter she elaborates further on how the social role imposed on women is not natural, but is culturally constructed. If you read the book, it is clear that in the quote that she is using "becoming a woman" to mean how one conformes to a social feminine role that isn't natural.

@@minkz4097 wait I'll give the video a second watch if I'm wrong but that was *not* what I got from the video. In fact thats what I assume she meant as a feminist myself, that gender (and woman specifically) is socially constructed not a biological inalterable reality. What the video told me was literally the opposite which was why I thought they were twisting her words and putting new ones in her mouth.

But, how much biology influence the way you behavior? I mean, yes there are individual differences, but mainly, hormones and genes will tell what are you going to be. There's been proof that this is the reason most women prefer "girly" things and that is not a stereotype, it's a truth.

    • @ParadoxInstitute

Yes, there are plenty of research studies which show average sex differences between boys and girls, men and women, on the population level. And hormones do play a large role in differentiating the sexes in behavior. Understanding the mix of how biology and society affect men and women depends on the trait being studied. Stereotypes are often true, and often do describe average differences, and at the same time, stereotypes can turn into caricatures and applied incorrectly to individuals.

Education is also very important. Education in boys and girls is very different. For example many boys are not allowed to cry and be weak, while girls are often allowed. Our early experiences are also important to determine who we are. I often think about the fact that much of our "male/female neuroscience" is absolutely useless, because if you study the difference of male and female brains in adults you will never know if it's a biological difference or if it's caused by differences in education. Studies on newborns would be more useful, and also studies about the influence of hormones on brain and behavior and studies about the effects of ALL the genes in X and Y chromosomes. This would be VERY useful.
